    You gotta feel for Sherlock here, despite how hostile he is towards John.
    Throughout a majority of his life before John, Sherlock has been a complete stranger to the concept of human emotion.
    Not to mention how his mind is basically like a fortress, keeping out all the “rubbish that ordinary people absorb.”
    Now that he finds himself drowning in all this fear, this vulnerability, this self-doubt, he truly has no idea how to cope with it all.
    And Sherlock hates that he’s feeling all these overwhelming vibes and feelings that are so foreign to him.
    He HATES that seeing a monster which feels like it came from Hell itself caused him to undergo something he doesn’t understand.
    And we all know that Sherlock HATES that which even he doesn’t understand.
    Benedict Cumberbatch is a freaking MASTER for portraying all this in just one scene.

In the original story, Sherlock doesn't see the hound until the end of the book, but when he does, all his stone-cold, gentleman façade falls down so quickly John Watson comments about it for a while. SHERLOCK: THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH ME DO YOU UNDERSTAND?! You want me to prove it, yes? We’re looking for a dog, yes, a great big dog, that’s your brilliant theory. Cherchez le chien. Good, excellent, yes, where shall we start. How about them? The sentimental widow and her son, the unemployed fisherman. The answer’s yes.
    JOHN: Yes?
    SHERLOCK: She’s got a West Highland terrier called Whisky. Not exactly what we’re looking for. John: Sherlock
    Sherlock: Look at the jumper he’s wearing. Hardly worn. Clearly he’s uncomfortable in it. Maybe it’s because of the material; more likely the hideous pattern, suggesting it’s a present, probably Christmas. So he wants into his mother’s good books. Why? Almost certainly money. He’s treating her to a meal but his own portion is small. That means he wants to impress her, but he’s trying to economise on his own food.
    JOHN: Well, maybe he’s just not hungry.
    SHERLOCK: No, small plate. Starter. He’s practically licked it clean. She’s nearly finished her pavlova. If she’d treated him, he’d have had as much as he wanted. He’s hungry all right, and not well-off - you can tell that by the state of his cuffs and shoes. "How d’you know she’s his mother?” Who else would give him a Christmas present like that? Well, it could be an aunt or an elder sister, but mother’s more likely. Now, he was a fisherman. Scarring pattern on his hands, very distinctive - fish hooks. They’re all quite old now, which suggests he’s been unemployed for some time. Not much industry in this part of the world, so he’s turned to his widowed mother for help. “Widowed?” Yes, obviously. She’s got a man’s wedding ring on a chain round her neck - clearly her late husband’s and too big for her finger. She’s well-dressed but her jewellery’s cheap. She could afford better, but she’s kept it - it’s sentimental. Now, the dog... tiny little hairs all over the leg from where it gets a little bit too friendly, but no hairs above the knees, suggesting it’s a small dog, probably a terrier. In fact it is - a West Highland terrier called Whisky. “How the hell do you know that, Sherlock?” ’Cause she was on the same train as us and I heard her calling its name and that’s not cheating, that’s listening. I use my senses, John, unlike some people, so you see, I am fine, in fact I’ve never been better, so just Leave. Me. Alone.
    JOHN: Yeah. Okay. Okay. And why would you listen to me? I’m just your friend.
    SHERLOCK: I don’t have friends.
    JOHN: Naah. Wonder why?

    For me, one of the best scenes of the series. The Hounds of Baskerville is a memorable episode. Sherlock struggles to recover from his encounter with the hound, cracking up, plagued by fear and doubt that he had never experienced before. His soul capsizes while Sherlock struggles as hard as he can. He clings to what is familiar, relying on his senses, using its ability of deduction, fighting against the trouble that keeps gnawing at him.
    His hurtful words are not voluntary, but are probably the result of the fight he tries so hard to wage.

There is nothing wrong with two adult men being best friends without them being a couple. Sherlock drinks, not because he is embarrassed about his feelings for john, but because in that scene he was a) drugged, b) scared that he was wrong about the dog, and c) frustrated that john wasn't listening to him, hence the talk about the mother and the son needing money, and d) HE IS AN ADDICT!!!

    • @oliviacalamia5783
      @oliviacalamia5783 Před 8 lety +12

      +Emma Clary With all due respect: you're right, there isn't anything wrong with two men simply being friends. But it surprises me how some (not trying to single you out) have this idea that people view strictly platonic relationships between men as problematic when, in fact, it's romantic relationships between men, even just the idea of them, that are viewed as problematic. Platonic relationships are the predominant relationship type portrayed between male characters in the media. And that is both a result and a perpetuator of the idea that platonic same-sex relationships are "normal" and "right." On the other hand, there is very little representation of romantic same-sex relationships in popular media. Again a result and (passive) perpetuator of the idea that same-sex relationships are "abnormal" and "immoral." So when a series like "Sherlock" comes along, which shows genuine potential for a romantic relationship between two male characters, iconic characters and the leads no less, is it really surprising that people will support and cheer for the development of that kind of relationship? And is it unreasonable for them to do so, given the dearth of LGBT+ representation in popular media? Please, read the show and the relationship between John and Sherlock however you wish. But please do not think that those who support Johnlock/any same-sex ship view platonic same-sex relationships as "wrong." Or that the integrity of platonic same-sex relationships stands to be compromised when they are heralded in our shows, movies and books day-in and day-out.

      +Olivia Calamia spoiler alert!
      with all due respect, I never said that homosexual relationships were wrong, I respect and support homosexual relationships, and I never said that I thought that people who supported johnlock were wrong, I said that it is very unlikely based on the fact that in season three sherlock couldn't be in a romantic relationship without using it from the beginning to help his client. and I am fairly certain that the only reason that their relationship lasted as long as it did was because he was using it. the client in question, he turned into Mary, in order to justify him going after Magnuson who he said he knew he was going to go after directly after he proposed to his current girlfriend. I am saying that it is unlikely that Sherlock would ever want to be in a genuine relationship without using it from the beginning to his own ends.

    • @oliviacalamia5783
      @oliviacalamia5783 Před 8 lety +2

      Lovely, I never accused you personally of being against same-sex relationships, which is why I purposely used the passive voice in my statement, "...it's romantic relationships between men [...] that are viewed as problematic." I was talking about disapproval of same-sex relationships in the abstract, not as it applies to anyone specific.
      I also never said that you think Johnlockers are wrong for supporting Johnlock. I only asked that you not suspect Johnlockers of thinking there is anything wrong with an enduring male-male friendship. You implied this suspicion in your statement, "There is nothing wrong with two adult men being best friends without them being a couple." If you're arguing that there is nothing wrong with X, then the implication is that (you suspect) there are people who DO find X to be wrong. After all, you wouldn't feel the need to defend X, if you didn't feel there are people who disagree with you (and in this context, those people would logically be the Johnlockers you're addressing in this thread). I was simply refuting the implications of your statement by pointing out the predominance/idealization of platonic same-sex relationships in the media. Nothing more, nothing less. :)
      We all have our own interpretations of Sherlock and the show. Like I said, you're free to have whatever opinions you like. ^_^
