Has anyone else noticed that Henry and Sherlock both dealt with their childhood trauma by misremembering someone as a dog?
Thomas Arrigoni yes! That's why Sherlock was so upset earlier in the episode, because that dog triggered something in him. His subconscious was trying to tell him something. Also, according to Magnussen, "The Hounds of Baskerville" was one of his pressure points. It wasn't just one of his many cases. Wonder why ;)
Thomas Arrigoni all the episodes relate in a way to his background story
This made me cry a little...
SPOILER ALERT
RIP readbeard
Mental trauma causing memories of a person to turn into memories of a dog? That sounds familiar...
Marc Peters yeah, that makes it even more brilliant... they planned it from the very beguinning
Luz Puebla Lara not really, they came with the idea of eurus when they were recording his last vow, and you can tell that they kept thinking of redbeard as a dog because in his mind palace sherlock says to him "they're putting me down to" but redbeard was actually drowned, if they wanted to link it to what happened in TFP they would have used different words. Season four was actually pretty messy and improvised, nothing of what happened was linked with the rest of the seasons except for sherrinford and the mention of a third silbing
strawberry milk whatever
Moffat and Gatiss originally planned Redbeard to Sherlock's childhood dog who was 'sent to a farm' i.e. secretly put down. They only came up with the idea of him being a child during the making of The Abominable Bride. So yes, definitely not planned from the beginning.
WOW
Watson: sherlock,timing
Serlock: not good?
Hahahahahhahahah
Gets me every time as well. :-D
that was my reaction too!
This was PERFECT. That moment when you think that "oh no the monster IS real" makes for excellent suspense.
TJ Hooker Ikr
I wish the spectral dog was actually real but unfortunately logic always wins.
@TJ Hooker The writers of "Sherlock" have a real gift for taking the original Holmes stories and making them worse.
@@opencommentsbbcnewsnight1704 Agreed. Why can't they just stick with a simple story?
@@milesdowley5159 they’re modernising it.
Don't know whats more haunting, the dog or Henry's wails of fear
Henry's wails. The dog is clearly CGI.
If this is traumatising the actor Russell tovey is in a TV show called being human where he plays a werewolf and Jesus christ it's hard to watch because it seems so painful
Henry scared me with his screams😂😂
wow we have the exact same profile picture
Lestrade: 2 shots misted
Watson: 2 shots killed it
@@dewadattaa268 Lestrade is a Police officer.
A Scotland Yard officer
@@dewadattaa268 I suppose you are right.
@@miguelluis483 In the UK, police don't typically carry guns. Most of them are trained to shoot, not usually to kill, but they are rarely authorized to carry, unlike America where most police are allowed to carry and trained to kill
Aryana Litchie I know it’s just a typo but “misted” is an awesome pun in this clip
Why is nobody talking about how this proves that Sherlock is truly terrified of Moriarty and his capabilities?
Which is the exact opposite of the book. Sherlock Holmes was not afraid of Moriarty at all.
@@spencerfrankclayton4348 He is only afraid after their first encounter. Afterwards, up until he fakes his death, he's no longer afraid.
Spartan Fruze
I’m pretty sure I’m being dumb and I’m probably stating the obvious, but I think he’s scared of what Moriarty could do to his friends, and how if he doesn’t figure it out fast his friends might get hurt. Remember, that Sherlock never *had* friends, so he will do anything to keep the ones that choose to be his friends safe. We all know he was bullied for his gifts, so when some says _”that was amazing”_ so simply, child-like wonder and all, he was in awe. But then he thought that he’s either lying or an air head, because that’s all he has ever known, and let’s say that he went with the formal. So after John proves to him that he is infact Sherlock’s friend, Sherlock has an overwhelming feeling, it being happiness or excitement or other positive ones but then he gets hit by a truck. The thought dawns on him that he had to keep them- him, safe. Because he had enemies, and they would do anything for someone with his gifts. The time Moriarty used John as a “voice”, fear was visible for a second and then masked with his poker face. He was petrified of what would happen _because of him,_ he was petrified of losing what he had strived to have since childhood, bullies ruined that dream for him. So he forgot of the dream, or more accurately, placed the file _’dreams’_ in a file cabinet to be buried under more _important_ homicide files and such.
sorry for the ramble :)
Moriarty is the first person who got under his skin. Who almost defeated him and made him question everything.
At this point Sherlock recognizes Moriarty as a threat. Someone he needs to be on guard for, hence he saw him.
Even after he dies, moriarty exists in his mind!
When Mary shoots him, he’s in his mind palace
And also in abominable bride
In the final problem episode Sherlock seems to avoid looking at the screen whenever moriarty shows up there.
He’s truly repelled and intimidated by him.
According to the original work , Sherlock was not afraid of Moriarty , instead he appreciated how skillful Moriarty was .
"Sherlock"
"What?"
"Timing.."
"Not good?"
I'm wheezing
I like the detail of John having the ability to shoot it more accurately than Lestrade, it gives more depth with the fact that John was trained more professionally because of him being a soldier (not saying that the police isn't trained like that, it's just that John served in a war for years and has probably improved everyday) and that John is used to panicking and having more control with his fear
In the UK it's very unusual for police to be armed. A detective like Lestrade would almost certainly not be firearms trained, so the fact that he was even allowed to use a police gun is unrealistic. Of course, it's also unrealistic for John to be allowed to still own his gun after finishing in the army. If it were a stolen weapon, he'd go to prison for at least 5 years as soon as the police found out about it.
And it is shown in the cabbie murderer episode how Watson is a trained and very accurate shooter.
John was trained to fight the Afghan Mujahedeen, the deadliest militia in the world.
@@Sheev8435that’s not strictly true, if Lestrade is an AFO he can be issued a firearm on specific cases.
@@frasierfreak92 that's correct, and is certainly consistent with other BBC shows such as Line of Duty, where a firearms license is like a driving license, and if an officer has a firearms license they can sign out a firearm if it is required. From what I've read about the real police service in the UK (except NI), AFOs have to do a lot of firearms training every year to retain their licenses, so someone like Lestrade it jut wouldn't be worth putting in the time required to retain his license.
"Not You! Not You!" oh now THAT's nice.
What did that mean?
@@riversong4997 Sherlock saw Moriarty in the fog, and his drugged up mind made him think for a split second that this was another case concocted by Moriarty, even though he knew it couldn't possibly of been him. The fog is a kind of fear gas, so it showed us that one of Sherlock's greatest fears, even if he hates to admit it, is Jim Moriarty.
@@Huntress_CSGOhh, ok. Thank you so much! :)
I was slightly disappointed that the Hound was just a regular dog made monstrous due to illusions, but this episode is still a favourite of mine.
Well in the original book it's literally just a dog, a mix between a bloodhound and a mastiff, that's been painted with phosphorus.
Yeah honestly this interpretation is more fun in a way. Reminds me of scarecrow from Batman.
this was the basically the story of Five nights at Freddy's the twisted ones in a nutshell
I think in the book too it was just a normal dog lol
I feel bad they killed the dog
WHY DID I WATCH THIS AT MIDNIGHT
Maggie Snyder it's 5 AM here, LoL
Maggie Snyder at 3 am :D

I watch this at midnight too
omg same here..I was scared.
I love how Sherlock nonchalantly just goes "Not good?" right at the end there XD
I love Russell Tovey's acting in this so much! The best is at 1:41 in my opinion. The fear in his voice sounds amazing!
Sintel Putnam absolutely
And they do a good job of really making you feel bad for him.
Hes always amazing, loved him in Being Human.
His screams are the scariest part about this scene.
I loved this episode. So scary, but so great.
I just can agree
the first time i watched it it scared me so bad. then i watched it 3 times the next day.
***** watched it yesterday. I was alone in the house... I couldn't sleep
Iva I've watched it before with all the lights off when everyone else was in bed. and do you mean you watched it because you couldn't sleep, or you couldn't sleep after watching it?
+silvergirlXO after it ^^
Cumberbatch and Freeman are the ideal contemporary interpreters of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's timeless characters & stories.
Yeah cumberbatch is so good at being a show off lol. Look at Doctor Strange
@Nicholas Wing The two actors are talented, but to do a modern version of Sherlock Holmes, you need writers who know how to write a proper mystery.
@@opencommentsbbcnewsnight1704 they did write good stories until they turned mary into a spy
@@opencommentsbbcnewsnight1704 you deserve an award for this comment lol
"its ok henry there is no dog, editors haven't added sound and cgi yet"
I love the fact that both Lestrade and Watson were trained marksmen but out of fear Lestrade misses, and he is holding his flashlight and gun like a actual police officer would. But Watson, a war veteran, is use to reacting in scary situations and get a hold of his fear, but his technique is still rusty. You can also see that Watson, because he went to war in Afghanistan, was less intimidated by the hound, that's why he wasn't the first to shoot, and Lestrade pulled the trigger first.
Hmm... unusual to fire with just one hand I think (Watson doesn't use 2nd hand for support, Lestrade does). Plus no proper aiming. Both blinked. They both don't seem to be very used to firing a gun. And without Lestrades flashlight Watson would probably have missed, too. Just my 2 cents...
Russel Tovey gives an outstanding performance, so underrated. Such incredibly anguish and terror communicated by him.
People are starting to see the parallels of the dog, but i think whats more important is this was the one of the few cases where Sherlock's genius was tested and doubted by himself.
if there's a moral to this story, it's how we take our problems and heighten them rather than reduce them. Sherlock creates a problem for himself where none exists--he doubts himself rather than follow Occum's Razor.
The hound was terrifying in an animalistic way but there's something far more terrifying about a human with murderous intent, locked in that primal struggle. Not to mention the horrible imagery of the gas mask and the connotations of ww1 and 2
Sherlock's reaction at the end so much like the sort of Reaction the Doctor would have.
S: * babbling *
J: * glares * Sherlock.
S: * turns around * what?
J: Timing.
S: ...not good?
Although I've seen this chapter like 5000 times, I still get goosebumps and I do not stop screaming because of the emotion
Definitely one of the best chapters :)
Imagine if the hound ended up being Wiskey, the chihuahua that the widowed mother-in-law earlier in the episode owned😂
So nobody is going to talk how real it was his reaction? 1:42 his scream is perfect and expresses how nervous and scared he is
Okay I love Rupert in this particular scene. He's an incredible actor, and is brilliant at being essentially the middle of John and Sherlock.
One word: brilliant
People seem to have a weird habit of misremembering dogs in this series
@Chugargonfan Just when I thought writers couldn't come up with a worse plot element than evil twin or convenient amnesia, here comes the concept of people being misremembered as dogs.
This is honestly much scarier than any modern horror movie. Watching this at night just hits different
Sherlock! Timing...

The dog with the illusion: Literally a hellbeast
The actual dog: Cute pupper

poor dog
I’d love to know how they made the sounds of the hound. I’ve always enjoyed the craft of combining and mixing sounds to create that unique other-worldly sound.
If I could get paid to figure out how fantasy things and creatures would sound and then create the sound, I'd love that job forever! I was fascinated to read about how the 1977 Star Wars was made, how they created the sounds of the lightsabers, Tie fighter ships, etc. Fascinating and sooooo fun!
If Sherlock was in the supernatural universe
Underrated comment.
Watching this series helped me enormously to make sense of the world.
Sherlock is such a chad, he even jokes during mysteries, showing his absolute control of the situation.
That would actually comfort me. I would have clung to him while he was boasting and listened to him brag until I calmed down.
What season and what was the episode

Who is here to watch videos of old Sherlock seasons to forget the new ones?
Amazing cast including every guest star they've had on! My favourite show on TV! X
Great story with ancient human settlement like Dartmoor as backdrop, every angle of story is amazing.Story makes me imagine old English way of life.

I just realized Henry has a fear of dogs here but he plays a werewolf in Being Human
Henry's actor Russell Tovey here also plays a Werewolf in Being Human UK
He has great acting skills when it comes to animalistic fear and human trauma
It's quite funny... this episode and season 4's finale use the same plot twist, yet people welcome this episode and criticize the latter for the same reason...
Because the Final Problem is usually more accurate to the book. The episode was not. At all.
I think the major difference between this and The Final Game is that in this, the fact that he keeps calling it a hound and the apparent strangeness of that is significant and is noted extremely early on in the episode, while The Final Game pulls that twist basically out of its ass at the very end. After showing the audience that Redbeard was a dog for almost a full season, showing him as early as season 3, they finally reveal that nope, it was his best friend or something, without any reason for the audience to suspect it. I personally have never guessed a twist in Sherlock, but they at least seem somewhat logical and always have enough clues leading to the twist, but in the case if Redbeard, pretty much everything about it told us it was a dog, and I honestly don't think anyone could guess that it was his friend before the twist was revealed. I believe that was the reason the twist in this was fully accepted, while the twist in the finale was seen as kind of dumb.
Honestly I just feel bad for the dog in all this
this hound reminds me so much of the hellhounds from supernatural
It is funny and amazing detail how Scotland Yard wasn't able to hit a single bullet even after firing 4 rounds and John got the dog in 2 because John been through war where every round counts...💯💯
more than once i've been at a scene of a wild deer getting run over trying to cross and road and surviving, just to have the local cop come by to deliver the coup d'grace....after quite a few attempts.
"Not an animal... a man. You were a child, so you rationalized it." Didn't realize until now the parallel between this and the series finale.

Has anyone noticed the hound looks like the animal that Dana and Louis are turned into in Ghostbusters?
Yes omg
Zuuuuuuul!
As much as I've gone off Moffat's interpretation of Sherlock over the years, I can't deny this is a scene, if it was done less...well, 'Moffaty' the entire episode would be a classic. This scene in particular has stuck with me ever since I was younger, it's an amazing moment of shock that throws everything we think about the plot so far into question.
0:04 he is actually talkinh about REDBEARD
I like how Henry started by driving a space Titanic with the doctor but finally get here with Sherlock (he also changed his name)
I was just screaming TRICO!!!!! You are back!!
oohhh man... this reminds me of the last episode... Sherlock!!!! Redbeard!! 😭😭😭😭
God the ending was brilliant

same but angry but feel bad but angry ....
Hammering Hank I feel like the dog had rabies. Everything the dog did actually happened, it just looked like a monster to them, so it still came in growling at them, baring it’s teeth, and then jumped at them with its mouth open. It was still a hostile dog, and with it most likely having rabies, putting it down was humane.
They did what they had to do. The dog killed people and is twisted. It had to be done. The dog was far from saving.
@@goldenhedgehog9 It wasn't rabies. The dog was affected by the gas as well and hence it saw them as something else and ended up attacking them.

I just wanna say that the story in the book is very much different from the movie but honestly the book part is actually better where hound actually exists and rhe complete story will blow your mind but the movie story is also 👍
It’s because the book is about a dog handler that trained his dogs to maim his victims. Which is terrifying in itself. What Sherlock did as adaptation was instead of the dog doing the killing, it’s the man using a chemical weapon to induce his victims fear
