- This time on Sally's Speed Shop we head to Indiana with the service truck with plans to revive a 1976 Gremlin that we bought sight unseen from Kevin at @brokengear2476! The car was last on the road in Bon Carbo, Colorado back in 1991. Kevin bought the car and had it shipped to his place just outside of Ft. Wayne, Indiana before selling this gem to us. I roped in my buddy Cale from @camracing to help with this project and drive one of the vehicles back to Georgia with me should we be able to get the little Gremlin running. Stay tuned for plenty of surprises including the biggest mouse nests I've ever seen as well as mouse turds for days! The story of this little Gremlin that could is far from over so stay tuned for Parts 2 and 3 of a legendary revival and adventure with this quirky automobile!

I want to give a huge thank you to Kevin from Broken Gear Show as well as Cale from Cam Racing for all the help, this would have been a truly miserable experience without them! 🙌🏼
That was a pretty cool read trip
Its a shame it isnt the Gremlin x done up by a dealer who put a 401,4 speed with a single 4 barrel or 2 four barrels.
I like the sh*t box is up for sale
When I was in my 20s in the 70s a friend of mine had a Gremlin with a 304 V8 with a 3 speed manual transmission. Who ever owned it before put headers, and an aluminum intake, and 4 barrel. That little car screamed.! It would burn the tires through 1st, 2nd, and leave a 2 foot long scratch in 3rd. Those wheels, and tires look really cool!
I remember one of those on the street. A Gremelin "X". Nasty little car. Everyone was scared of it.
@Max Nafe Horsemanship it's true, they were a real sleeper. Another one was the 70 Mercury Comet with the 302. Cam , intake, 4 barrel, and headers made them run really good to.
We don't need no stinking emissions! You should of called Mike Myers to help you clean it, since he knows AMC"s.
Im surprised at how solid that Gremlin is.
Good to know that my Eagle shares many parts with this Gremlin, even the FORD starter.
Absolutely love your AMC videos! Can’t wait to watch the remaining ones in this series. Keep them coming!!!!!❤
As I look at these Gremlin videos I realize the 74 Gremlin X I had in 1973-76 was really a top of the line Gremlin. It had the rally steering wheel, rear wind visor, locking gas cap, and Gremlin emblems and badges everywhere. It had more issues than any other car I've ever had. Wish I had it back.
Be sure to video your Hantavirus adventures!
I’ve always heard stories about that, but never encountered anyone who actually knows someone who died from mouse turds.
@@SallysSpeedShop Since 1993 there have only been 830ish confirmed cases. There are probably more that went undiagnosed, but it is really not common. Of those cases 94% were west of the Mississippi River and the virus had a 35% mortality rate.
@@SallysSpeedShop don't pull that motor.. SAVE THAT 6
CLEAN IT UP...
and if you want to do something
Re upholster it with some old blue jeans!!!
When I was in high school, my girlfriend had a Gremlin (which was a lot nicer than my 1959 Chevy Bel Air). It was red with gold trim, and she just had to show me that it would do 100 mph (indicated). One of the scariest incidents of my young life at the time! Looking forward to the next installments...
old AMC 258's never die they just keep chuggin along
this is a 232 straight 6
@@grantkoeller8911 same thing 4.2 3.8 all the same engine just a bit less stroke
Our family had a brown Gremlin from the early-'70s to 1977. Traded it in for a Fiat 128. Mum finally got a Honda in the late-'80s and never looked back. Ooooh! Nice calculator watch snag! You just got your money back!
I just bought and brought back home a 1983 AMC Spirit with a 258, 4.6L, inline 6 here in Mexico. It was an adventure driving 500 miles on the highway on 12 year old tires.
What a great find. The patina on this rig is amazing. If you ever want to get rid of this, it would be perfect for a memorial car for my dad. Love that you are keeping AMC alive.
Thank you David! It's such a good example of a Gremlin!
I'd drive that car every day and just clear coat it. Keep it stock and daily drive it. Had a 76 Hornet at one point with the straight six and what a bullet proof engine. Was easy to work on, too.
@@jonmurraymurray5512 clear coat and rust do not get along. Go with Sweet Patina, or Derrick's sauce from Vice Grip Garage. Boiled Linseed oil.
Mahalo for yet another adventure for me to follow! You folks are wonderful. When I was your age, I loved running my ricer on the Autobahn. I would not have given a...thing...like this a first look, much less a second look. You have made me appreciate these American classics from American Motors. These things appear indestructible to me. To be fair, the very first car I legally ever drove by myself (like...with my very own no-foolin' driver's license) was a rented AMC Concord that was loaded with luxuries. That car felt so much sturdier than anything I'd ever ridden in before save for a few military vehicles. Your adventures reveal to me that I missed out on a whole set of different adventures I could have had. Please continue to stay safe and enjoy your journeys to the fullest. Aloha!
That’s awesome! I’ve always wanted to drive on the Autobahn and of course the Nurburgring!
That is a beautiful little piece of history right thurr
How many mice lived in this car a army of 1000s holy crap how are the under seat cushions so nice
Clearly a lot haha
Best episode in a while… I can’t get over the floor in that car.
Thank you! It's truly in remarkably good shape underneath all the excrement haha
@@SallysSpeedShop
Here in Ohio, we’re not even used to seeing any paint on the floors!
What a cool little car, I've always wanted a gremlin. My first order would be to drop in a bone stock lexus 2Jz and just drive it.
That would be amazing! 🙌🏼
Lol. My mom had a '73 AMC Gremlin for years. It was in 3 rollover accidents during the time she owned it, and it barely even had a scratch on it. You can't kill those cars.
Now that's impressive!
AMC bought major components and fabrafit things together with brackets and spacers.
AMC vehicles are the A1 mutt's of the automotive industry.
Love this Gremlin 😁 So sound and so much potential to become a sideways irony chariot by swapping-in later AMC/Jeep parts and aftermarket headwork/cam, then sorting springs/dampers/ARBs until the right-hand pedal can wiggle the rear at will whilst bellowing a 6cyl soundtrack 😆 I’ll be following this one!
We definitely have to figure out a motor for it that's better than the 232! I'm thinking a Hemi six from Australia!
@@SallysSpeedShop look for original AMC 258 straight 6, bullet proof!
When I heard that noise when you were turning it over by hand, I immediately thought of the bell housing being full of mouse turds. It didn't surprise me at all when that was what you found.
Haha yeah, it was not entirely surprising given how the rest of the car looked!
Lovin this episode. I got a orange 1972 Gremlin X. Its fun to say the least.
Thank you shawn! Sounds like a fun little car!
I am a Big Gremlin Fan and i owen one. I like you doing, bring Back the Gemmi on the Road. Greetings from Switzerland 🇨🇭
I've seen a jeep leak spark through the cap before. Felt it before I saw it, actually. It had a random bad misfire, I leaned over to look, moved something out of the way, vacuum hose I think, got juuust close enough to the distributor cap and... ZAP! I'll describe my reaction as a profane angry Taz.
Wow impressive how nice the floor and paint is under that carpet
It's basically perfect underneath which is crazy!
@@SallysSpeedShop I agree crazy
Wow. That is surprisingly complete and rust free!! Very good builder car. Anything it needs, is luckily available. Seat Upholstery, Door seals, Carpet - even the cardboard glove box you can get new.
Good to know! Chances are we won't restore it because we have a lot of other projects, but we'll at least keep it on the road!
Very impressed and how you guys are cleaning it out make sure you get anything flammable out from under that hood interior cut out that way carpet I'm an old carpet guy the Green carpet is indoor-outdoor you can clean it wet it and it still stay good other stuff is trash and real nice choice and wheels looks great have fun guys now back to the video
Thanks Bill!
Very good start. Thanks for sharing ❤️💯👊.
I also agree lot of mouse or rat poop.
Entirely too much! It was quite a mess!
I never own one but I have party in one, they are small Sally speed shop it still could be sharp car. Hey Jacob that stuff in the bottles look sick I know he wouldn't drink it.
I’m very glad he didn’t drink it haha
sounds very good for sitting that long few small things and that little Gremlin fingers crossed will be a gremlin only in name.
If you don't know AMC, they were great cars. Very well built, reliable, and comfortable to drive. I used them as a road salesman and put over 100K miles with never a major mechanical problem. I had a Matador that the first repair was at 107K miles and it was a easy to replace water pump. The only water pump I had to replace. I wish they were still for sale.
They really are underestimated thoroughly and are truly great cars!
I beg to disagree with you. I had a 1976 AMC Hornet (which I think had a Ford 6 cylinder in it) that drove me crazy in hot weather. I'd go out to start if after it sat in a parking lot and about half the time, the distributor cap would just blow up and pop off and I'd have to open the hood and put it back on. After a while, the metal clip on one side got a bit sprung and stretched, so it became hard and harder to put the cap back on. No idea what caused it to explode off the distributor but maybe some gases got in it from somewhere and the spark ignited those gases? Then later on, I had just made a 90 degree turn from one highway to another and the engine made a tremendous racket for about 5 seconds, really loud clanking and clattering. It then quit and would not restart, so I thought the engine blew up on me, maybe a connecting rod or something broke. I sat there for about 5 minutes, trying to think of what I was going to do because this was super way before cell phones. As I considered a long walk to the nearest farm house to use their phone, for the heck of it I turned the key and she started right back up!! And I drove it for several more years!! Maybe a valve lifter got stuck? I'll never know. Also, I had to replace the carburetor float about every two years, it would get soaked, sink too far down and the car would run rich. So my memories of the only AMC car I ever owned are really bad. I feel it was a real pile of you-know-what.
@@markr.1984 that’s really funny that you say that about the cap popping off because this thing started doing that during our return trip home randomly towards the end 😂 That’s too funny!
@@markr.1984 I remember the distributor cap problem. It was a bad vacuum advance module on the side of the distributor letting gas fumes into the cap and a spark from the points would cause the cap to pop off. The engine was never a Ford product but the distributor was. I did have the same problem but AMC took care of it. I put over a hundred thousand miles on several of them and never a major problem. In those days you couldn't buy a car that didn't have something go wrong along the way. The motor was an AMC seven main bearing motor and was a very good motor, better than most six cylinders at the time. The only one that was as good was the Chrysler slant six that was also very good.
If you need anything pressure washed, call Puddin,he will give you a quick video lol
We're gonna need some gloves To clean This One Out.!!! -- that's the biggest nest I've e beer seen!! - Jacob
I had one and put a v8 in it with side pipes and 70's all around it with a Hurst shifter. What a fun car. I wish I had another.
Sounds like an absolute riot! Side pipes will always be cool on these!
What a little beauty. Love that shade of blue. Good job
Wow first start and she idling very nice
I was thoroughly impressed!
This car fits your collection
I’m not sure how to feel about that being so true 😂
I used to work on these turds at a dealership. When they get older the front cross member sags, the spring towers lean in at the top; they need a wheel alignment every 6 months, new door hinge bushings once a year (the originals are nylon; replacements are bronze) and if you don't replace them in time the hinges will need replacement.
Now that's interesting, I've never heard of the first one happening. This thing for sure needs some new hinge bushings on the driver's door though!
@@SallysSpeedShop You won't know the cross member has sagged until you remove it and try to put it back on. You may need a portapower to get it back in. The cars handling and alignment issue could probably be improved by fabricating a spring tower brace (going over the engine from tower to tower) to stiffen it up. Lots of modification potential in these cars.
Love these adventure videos, keep them up.
OMG, you ever want to send this one down the road, I'll come drive it home..
The comb was very appropriate for this car. Back in the day those were called “Rat Tail Combs”.
Wow at the nest in the engine bay Holly smokes 😮
It was nuts!
Wow, who knew that Montgomery Ward made tires? As someone who started driving in the mid-80s, I think it was the thing to do to write down the mileage and calculate your mpg. I know I did it with my 78 Mustang II. This is a very cool, but somewhat gross, video and Gremlin!
Wars did not make tires, there are only 5 companies that actually make tires in the us they just put other peoples brand on them.
Love the gremlin growing up my father had 1 so always had a soft spot for them
They're cool little cars for sure!
You guys made a great find even greater. Love your approach and curiosity about the car's past life.
I had a Gremlin back in the day and it was a great car ran forever
They’re really pretty dang reliable cars!
We had a 74' Levi's Gremlin. That car was sketchy right from the factory. It had AC/ Delco alternator, FOMOCO voltage regulator and a Chrysler automatic transmission. It had a straight six in it too. It was a battery killing machine. I remember one time in the winter of 76-77 when the battery was supposedly dead and I hooked up the battery charger to the battery and the moment I put the positive lead on the positive battery post and the car immediately started, unfortunately the keys were in my pocket. Strange little car.
I had a '78 Gremlin with the VW 2-liter 4-cylinder engine. Base model, 4-speed, manual steering, manual brakes, radio and heater and that's about it. I put 153,000 miles on it in just under ten years before trading it in for an '88 Jeep Cherokee, which I still own.
That's honestly all you need! I bet it was a great little car!
@@SallysSpeedShop It got me around, but it was high maintenance. It had solid valve lifters, not to mention points and condenser when just about every other engine in '78 had solid state ignition.
@@8avexp still carried you an impressive amount of miles!
@@SallysSpeedShop Add to that, that engine had neoprene valve stem oil seals instead of nylon seals. I had to have them replaced after five years because oil was getting past the valve guides into the cylinders. It would puff smoke while starting it once it warmed up. BY the time I traded it in, it was puffing smoke again.
You should name the car, The Garden Compost Gremlin! LoL Those floorpans are in incredible shape considering the moisture and mouse urine!
Gremlins are fun in the snow!
Haha we name it something very fitting later in the series. And right? I was blown away by how nice the floor pans were!
Ha ha ha deadly those wheels look deadly how many of them only have three Lugnuts😂 party on Garth!😋
We put three lug nuts on each wheel just to move it around 👍🏼 We have a full set for each wheel
What a cool little car! I love it. You’re as bad as me with 80s Pontiac’s.
Haha we definitely have a problem 😅
Great job. Another great video 👍👍
car started right up , and sounds great!!!!!! idles perfectly!!!
Yea buddy, those are great for stereo setup, baby bass, you got plenty of space for speakers. Totally overhaul the motor boring 10,000 over, replace every thing top to bottom, Runa 2 Barrel from Holly. Change tire size.
Then you got a good cruzin car for drinkin all over the backcountry, forestry roads. I sure had fun with the one I had. 🇺🇸
good stuff, I remember the green wagon you and Mike Finnigan built cool stuff!!
AWESOME video...can't wait to see the rest...I have always wanted to see someone Gen III hemi swap one of these...I think it would be awesome.
Spent lots of time pushing a gremlin back in the day lol
Haha we spent a good bit of effort pushing it what seemed like uphill both ways in this video 😅
Man I just got a 1977 gremlin x, so perfect timing!
Very nice! I wish this was an X! They're cool little cars.
Great video DJ keep up the amazing work
Omg there is a entire tree in the rear hatch 😂😂
Haha it was quite a lot!
I was enjoying breakfast when you unveiled the massive rat/mouse turd piles 😂
not only I hear about the AMC parts and chevrolet are match, is the 6 on line engines are durable and easy repair, nice rescue you did,,
They're great little cars honestly and used a variety of parts from different manufacturers.
@@SallysSpeedShop also after watch the video, for a moment I though on the movie "waynes World," but is a "Pacer",, but almost similar the Gremlin,,😅😅
Awesome can't wait for the next episode, love the Gremlin
Thanks Rosco! Part 2 is out now!
14:16 I knew at that very moment there was going to be a special place called "Rat City" or "Mouseyville" somewhere inside the car rear of the car. LOL. You know the Milk inside of those bottles is actually very valuable!! Cheese makers all over the world are right now spending huge money to try and come up with ways to make milk do what those bottles of Milk are now doing! They can strain it through cheese cloth and brand it Greminshola "Old' and they won't even need to inject it with mold! COOL!
the original glass bottles are totally collectible. just put them in a dish washer, to sterilize
Best episode to date ! " How many mice were in here " ? All of them ....
Haha thank you Jerome! It had a whole colony going on for sure!

Thanks for making me feel old I had a calculator watch before long time ago (20:57) I used it every day in school to cheat on math before my teacher took it away and never gave it back
13:48 the lable is gone, but those look like early 90s yoo-hoo bottles which were a division of Pepsi if I remember
Whatever it was I can assure it was milk based cause I opened one and it was absolutely disgusting!
Awesome thank y'all
Thanks for watching!
I actually adore the amc gremlin
I prefer the Pacer. Yes it's a weird car, that's why I like it. Nothing like it.
Love Gremlins!
great stuff thanks
I’d say that if the previous owner was taking diligent notes on each time he filled up the gas tank to calculate his mileage each time,he probably also took immaculate care of the entirety of the car. Great find. Sounds like it was well maintained throughout its running years.
It's pretty wild, there it documentation of every gas stop and little bit of maintenance from 84,000 miles all the way up until it was parked
@@SallysSpeedShop I just bought a 69 c10 this past December. The original owner was a NASA engineer (there’s nasa parking stickers in the window and on the front bumper). He kept record of each gas fill up and oil change in a black notepad. Of course all other maintenance is documented as well. I found his phone number and called him up. He’s 88 years old now, but he was delighted to talk to me about the truck. He said he kept the gas records to see if anything was changing with the mileage or oil consumption. I just know the truck was loved and well maintained.
Well Jacob I have been following for a long time now so you know I'm sticking around till they plant me in a pine Box hopefully that ain't any time soon 😁😅😂
Thank you Robert! I hope you stick around for a long time for both of our sakes haha

Always liked the gremlins dunno why something about them, also ou have great music in your videos
I'm convinced.. You use my go 2 oil! Almost every car I have has over 200000miles, and has 14w40 Shell oil!
Is there an ignition lock on the column that prevents the ignition switch from turning all the way off?
There’s a lock, but the key should be able to turn it off obviously. Something is broken inside the ignition switch.
Keep posting I enjoyed it

Horn pitches are 2 notes, a perfect 4th, E A,
Remember the root of a perfect 4th is the upper pitch, so A is the root.

You have a nasty noise going on that sounds like your lens cap or something rubbing the microphone. It makes it painful to listen with headphones on. I've heard it in your other videos too but it sounds really bad around 47:45
