I agree 100%. I've never owned a Harley but back in the 70's one of my employees had a chopped hard tail with a raked neck and he let me take it for an afternoon of riding. 4 or 5 hours on that one kinda cured me of my desire to own one. Yeah,, I had a ton of fun but the vibration feedback through my forearms let me know IF I felt the burn to get a full size bike I would lean toward a (sorry) 4 cylinder Yamaha, Suzie or Honda.

In my youth I always kept a trusty iron horse as my primary vehicle. Suddenly I found myself a full time single dad. No time or money for riding or maintenance, I lost a piece of myself. 25 years later, and 5 sons grown, I'm looking at bikes and seems like I'm priced out of the game. Love this episode, living vicariously through your exploits once again. I really appreciate you sharing your adventures.

@T0tenkampf my biggest regret was not buying a cheap Japanese bike sooner. They are honestly better bikes in alot of ways. Cheap to fix, and you can buy 10 of them for the price of a new Harley. Hell the NEW Japanese bikes are half the price and have all the features.

This video inspired me to get to work on my 2007 Ultra Classic that I have had an issue when shifting and reaccelerating. Just like you said I used all the exact fluids you did and saved a bundle. I then took a closer look and realized the belt from the transmission to the rear wheel had way to much play in it. About 3” to much play letting the belt slip. I took a couple hours and took things apart and tightened the axle bolt and got the belt to the correct specs. I took it for a quick rip and the problem was fixed. I have since out over 150 miles on it with no issues. Thank you so much for this video you have now got me inspired to work on my other projects in the shop.

There are 2 tensioners. Inner and outer. The inner cam tensioner wears faster. You need to look at it with a dental mirror. They don't make any noise that you will notice when they are bad. I've had them in the shop with 30k miles and they're worn past the pad down to the metal yet the bike ran fine. Easiest upgrade is hydraulic tensioners. I've changed a few to S&S gear drive.

Thanks for the change of pace with the motorcycle revival. Great back story. As for which side of the road - I'm a mustard guy. Too many cagers will "merge" to your lane next to you when they pass instead of completely passing you before they move over. Gives you somewhere to go when that happens. Too much organic wild animal detritus occupies the mayonnaise side of the road, well - that plus fall dead leaf lubricant, Homer bucket carcasses, and ladder remnants.

I'm glad to see you finally get back to working on a motorcycle! It's nearly the time of year where I start riding and watching this got me even more excited to do it again.
I don't ride in the winter, and around spring time every year I start thinking about selling my bike, but after the first ride of the year I instantly change my mind. Happens every time.
As far as your bike goes, you could do the easy route and just return it back to a decent looking bike, or you could totally mad max the thing, make it safe, reliable and keep it ugly. It stands out like that, and I'm not a big patina guy but that would be pretty slick.

You riding down the road reminded me why I, we have those HDs ! The wind in your face! It’s a feeling that is hard to put into words! If you have not experienced it for yourself! So far I’ve been fighting the battle against this lousy Cancer! This type of renal cancer is very aggressive! I’ve even had it close to the right kidney fought that off, then last year had it in my pancreas! Fought that off with some of the latest cyber knife photon therapy! So far I’ve been clean for the past year! I get checked every three months with labs, cat scans, and MRIs . If I’m clean with the next sessions of scans I can shift to scans every 6 months! I’m not telling you to illicit sympathy I’m a veteran Marine at 75, retired automobile restoration technician! That’s why I and there are many thousands of people like me that watch your videos! We follow you because your reverence toward this country, the USA , and all the thing the founders of this great country went through to establish a country in which you and I can live in freedom and independence! Absolutely love the motorcycle content! If it was me I’d still check out those cam chain tensioners as their inspection interval is every 25k miles for the Twin-Cams, and the previous “owner” wasn’t exactly nice on the poor machine. You might not hear any chain slap now but with those older spring tensioners once they are metal to metal with the cam chain they will fly apart and all that metal will recirculate through the rest of the motor and it’s toast. I only say this as I’ve done a bunch of cam chest inspections at my shop with motors that sound clean and smooth but were at the brink of tensioner failure till we took a peek at them. Cheers and ride safe ❤

Thanks as always for bringing us along. Really do love your channel and looking forward to getting to meet you one day at an event.

Derek, cheers for an awesome bit of motorcycle content! Nothing beats the revival of a bike with a personal connection (your brother), only to have it stolen away, and then recovered and returned to you, after many years, and 30,000+ miles later, holding the secrets of its sordid past! (... is this a content comment, or a film script pitch ⁉) I'd love to see more content on the bike, as you bring it fully back to 100% (in any way you choose👍‼) Keep doing what you do 👍‼

Takes me back to Yuma MCAS , 1974, when I bought my basket case 1967 Shovel head former Georgia State Police Bike! I put it together, got the worn out crank pin replaced, painted it with several friends with a California Kid flame job on gloss black and rode it all over Arizona and later Ohio and Virginia. You’re the best channel on CZcams Derek! Add to it that you’re a fellow Tennessean and what more could a feller want? Thanks for the transporting experience!

I love the bike episodes, being a harley tech (twin cam is the best cam kinda guy), it's fun to see what you're doing that I do a little different. ATF goes in the primary if it's got Barnette clutch or an aftermarket. The atf type f makes the clutch grab better.... anyways a little manual impact and a small Tonya Harding works great for those derby cover bolts! I used em everytime... just in case 😆. LOVE THE VIDEOS KEEP UP THE HARD WORK!!!!

This episode reminds me of helping my dad tinker around with his old Harley when I was a kid around 9 years old. It is so fulfilling to see old iron brought to life and back on the open road again. I currently don't own a bike, but it makes me want to get so I can ride with you, Derek, and maybe a cold snack or two. No dui's 😂. Thanks for the trip down memory lane cause my dad is no longer here, but the the channel and your wholesome family, sir.

I learned in the 80"s to ride in the left most part of the lane, so that oncoming traffic could see you, but I agree about the modern "self driving" vehicles, people are too dependent on the technology to be paying attention to what they're actually doing. So I ride center left, now. Better have eyes in the back of your head nowadays. Great story and great storytelling.

I love working on bikes! Everything is lighter weight and usually more simple. It can be a problem getting them jacked up but when I didn’t have a garage to work on a decent project car I just had my bikes in the shed and a couple farm tractors. I haven’t done much with the fuel injection Harley’s with the security system so this was informative too!

Hey Derek, chain bar lube for ya gearbox, I always add about 15-20% chain bar lube to gearboxes and differentials, it's cheap and has the sticky mozzarella additives that create a web of lubrication thru the box. The internet says it's a no no but I've ran it in a vehicle for 15 years and the drain plug is always clean as. I've used it in engines with low oil pressure as well as it's a pretty thick brew. Watching from new Zealand where we do a lot of " it ain't right but it works " kind of repairs on the regular as parts can be weeks getting here on the boat. Great channel and keep up the good work✌️👍.

Another awesome episode! If you could get that onto the ramp truck with a car, you should make that into a custom VGG pit/T2T bike. Also, I personally am more of the mustard kind of rider, for two reasons; 1. I want to be fully visible in the mirror of the car ahead and not hidden from sight for oncoming traffic who might try to turn behind that car, 2. I like in Washington where the mayo is usually covered in glass car parts, trash, and most likely water
