I was there that night. I'll never forget it. My father bought me tickets because I had good grades at school (I was in in Primary school 3rd grade at that time).
I've never seen my father that pissed after the main event (we're from Montreal, Canada so of course we were cheering for Bret).
My father was so pissed. I had no idea what was going on lol. Our whole row were screaming and shouting and talking to each others.

I initially rolled my eyes upon seeing the thumbnail. “Ugh, another Montreal Screwjob video.” Then I pressed play, and I wasn’t disappointed. The depth to which the documentary went is unbelievable.

The fact that Mick Foley, Undertaker, Ken Shamrock, Vader, as well as all the others took Bret’s side over McMahon shows not only that they are loyal, stand-up friends with Bret Hart, it also shows how much respect they sincerely had for Bret. They might all seem like just characters in a wrestling organization, but we have to remember that they were literally standing up to their actual boss; a boss who obviously had the power to do real damage towards ending or sabotaging their careers.
I suppose the one “decent” thing Vince McMahon did was that he took the punishment Bret Hard served up and didn’t file any criminal charges or pursue any legal civil action against Bret Hart. I guess he was man enough to know that he had it coming; that he deserved it- and he accepted it and left it at that.
Whenever Bret Hart has talked about this; even many years afterwards, it is obvious that this event really had a significant impact on him. I feel bad for Bret Hart, and this particular video did an amazing job (probably the best) at covering the entire backstory and providing much needed; often left out context to how big of a deal this really was and what all had led up to it. Bret Hart is one of those types of men who has integrity, loyalty, and a proper functioning moral compass. Sadly, he believed and trusted that he was dealing with like minded individuals; sadly he wasn’t
I think if Vince wouldve made public all this would be worst and depict him as a coward , besides being a screwer, traitor, and he didnt need this on his business.

As someone who's worked in a toxic work environment, said work conditions, tend to carry with you, in the sense that I'm always wary of my boss potentially screwing me over or socially engineering situations for me to feel anxious over and wonder if what he said was correct or just lies used to keep me in line. My old boss would tell me that my coworkers said I stunk, and when I asked them about that, because I felt embarrassed, they reassured me that that wasn't true, but that didn't ease me of my anxiety, but increased it as I knew, it was my boss trying to gaslight and manipulate me. It was a horrible feeling, as someone who already had anxiety issues, as well as PTSD, and I elaborated as much to my boss, they didn't sympathize, rather they used said information, against me.
To this day, I am not friends with anyone at work, work is a separate life, with separate relationships, and I do not reveal any personal information, unless needed.
I assure you it wasn't all about the respect for Brett. It was a loyalty based decision to side with him too. Brett was a top guy but he was one of the few talents who always made sure that whoever he was in the ring with not only was safe but looked really good too. And if the company was willing to screw over a top guy like THAT, then none of them are safe.

I think the truth is that Shawn and Bret missing from that era actually allowed other stars to shine.
Honestly, this in-depth doc makes me feel even more sorry for Brett than I did. He truly got screwed. He showed loyalty and looked for solutions but was denied at every turn. He was treated very badly.
Ya gotta see both sides...im not the biggest Bret fan but do believe if Vince agreed to not have Bret lose in Canada they coulda done it differently....but I mean Vince was the owner and boss of the company...ya gotta do what he says...or work with him....Bret wouldnt agree to anything...and at the time...Vince was scared...hed already seen how Eric was willing to have one of his championships thrown into the garbage...and was afraid somethin similar may happen...it sucks both ways

The bottom line is, Hart was prepared to drop the title. He knows the business, you have to a job on the way out, he just didn’t want to drop it to Michaels after what was said in front of the boys. I originally thought that Hart was too singleminded in the lead up to it the screw job, but after watching this and recent interviews, it’s clear McMahon wanted these conditions that to what happened
@@Krwler Hart had already signed his contract with WCW to begin in Dec 97...the limited cdeative control was due to Mcmahons bad experience with giving previous guys FULL creatuve control (ie Hogan) any shoot interview with Bret will reveal this. He says so himself. Not argue just stating facts man.

I can proudly say I witnessed it all. The night when Bret shoved McMahon and ranted about injustice after injustice, that was the beginning of the attitude era! The best era in the history of professional wrestling.
The ending was awesome. You stated it really well. All those heated matches and real life drama between HBK and Bret, they were both out of the WWF within 4 months of each other. What fascinates me was that, them being out of the spotlight, paved the way for WWF to get to to the top if the wrestling business. Drama really hinders growth. The same is true with how WCW lost it. Too much backstage drama.

I think people was tired of the narrative WWF created between Shawn & Brett. It wasn't selling enough. New story was greatly needed
Just imagining all the shouting and heat backstage that night, from Bret's wife fuming at Shawn and Hunter to Undertaker assuming his power to force Vince to explain himself, it's a miracle nobody was seriously injured by the end of it all.
I saw video of them right after the match and Bret said “you weren’t in on that?” And Shawn said “I swear to god I was clean in this Bret. I had nothing to do with it!” And Bret just sat there spaced out and pissed.

As a wrestling fan this still gets me so upset on behalf of Brett Hart.
Brett was Brett's biggest problem.
With this much backstory you really feel for Bret, constantly pushed into situations he didn’t want to be in that he did anyway to the best of his incredible ability and still painted as the bad guy who wouldn’t do business after the fact. The biggest moment that shows his character is going and thanking Shawn for the match afterwards despite knowing he’d been in on it, a complete professional in spite of everything.

I mean it only made him look foolish. He's a whining little baby with ZERO personality. He had a huge ego and thought he was way more than he really was. And years later he knew he was wrong especially when more and more of the public learned on how things ready worked behind the scenes. That's why he gave two totally different stories as to why he didn't want to put Shawn over. In the beginning of his documentary Wrestling with Shadows his reason was way different than what he gave in The Dark Side of the Ring. That's just fact.

The story of Bret Hart is a cold tale of what happens to a lot of good men. Loyal, honest, hard working, often overseen and regularly slighted by bad people who manipulate the strings of a good man.

That 20 year WWF contract was INSANE and so legendary!!! Bret pulled off a unicorn with Vince, you see why later Vince felt like a idiot and didn’t want to honor it. Business wise he did the one thing they always tell you not to do…fall into a no way out situation and start offering the best deals nobody has ever heard. It’s a sad but had Vince honored his side, Bret wouldn’t had left. He was as loyal as they come…hate him or love him, Bret kept his word up to what happened in Montreal. Sometimes I wished history was different and that Vince kept his word then none of this would had happened. Bret would had left on good terms and a nice ending to it all. You see though? Few if any ever get a beautiful ending in life…jealousy, greed and lies mess up everything in the end.
The really odd thing is that had the Screw Job not happened, Vince wouldn't have had the heat needed for "Mr. McMann" to be so hated. Without him as the heel would Stone Cold have become, well, Stone Cold? Evil Vince is such a fixture now that its impossible to remove him from that era, but without the Screw Job he might never had existed.
Its possible that the Screw Job, for how bad it was, and for all that Brett did not deserve it, saved the company.

I don't post comments very often. I feel almost compelled to state this: this is hands-down one of the best made, most thoroughly researched, and most thoughtfully created documentaries of the Montreal Screwjob I have seen to date. This one is really incredible and a must-watch for anyone interested in professional wrestling folklore. Excellent work, Cultaholic, excellent work!

First time ever my wife ever asked me about wrestling was when I was watching this. I couldnt believe it but she said herself politics of wrestling can be a 1000 times more entertaining than the product they try put out.

I agree but disagree. As someone who knows nothing of wrestling, I found it difficult to follow. It is definitely a video for the well informed. Would have liked to see some summaries in the first 30 mins.

I am surprised even after all this time, all the evidence shown and told from everyone involved that there are people who still take Vince/Shawn's side. Vince is the one who gave Bret that contract, he who put himself in financial peril, he who put in the creative control clause in that said contract, he who chose to breach the contract multiple times, he who put the belt on Bret and he who chose to coddle a man child in HBK who had only ever caused him problems for years. Bret did what any of us with a spine would have done in the same situation and stood up for himself the only way he could. Bret never wanted to leave, he was a loyal company man wrestling there longer than HBK or Taker, he was willing to take a pay cut and contractual changes all of which Vince disagreed to. It was Shawn who chose to be difficult and refused to be a team player countless times to countless people, he who wanted to leave to be with his friends in WCW, he who put Vince in numerous needlessly bad situations (Vader, "losing his smile", getting beaten up in a bar picking a fight with a vet and etc.). Had HBK chose to not be a disrespectful man child Bret would have gladly dropped it to him despite everything above. For everything to work in the ring you need trust and respect with who you work with and HBK blatantly disregarded both so Bret acted accordingly. Anyone who thinks HBK was in the morally right side of this I ask you this. If so why was Undertaker standing behind the curtain of the HBK VS Austin match at WM14 with his fists taped?
When this took place, I was watching WCW more because of the NWO angle and didn't think much of it at the time. I've come to love the different ways this story has been told over the years and this is, by far, the best telling of it I've heard. Thanks for taking the time to put this together for us.
You can still feel Bret's pain when ever he talks about this. wwe really left an unforgettable dent on the Hart family.

I mean, when you consider the crazy butterfly effects, from Owen being locked down out of necessity, leading to the Blue Blazer incident, to Bulldog following Bret to WCW, where both would suffer career-ending (and in Bulldog's case, life-shortening, due to his painkiller addiction) injuries, to being pretty much persona non grata in mainstream pro wrestling from 2001-05 because of Vince, wouldn't you still have pain if you were Bret? But it was said best in DSoTR, "If one of these two could've put their egos aside, this would've never happened. But instead, they hit upon the most talked about match ending in wrestling history."

I don’t blame Vince because he cared about his company most of all and did whatever it took , by any means necessary.
Also, this hurt Hart because it showed that he’s selfish and unreliable. After all, wrestling is a business and a disgruntled employee refused to follow orders.

These guys lived crazy lives. Not much of a Wrestling fan but I'm definitely a fan of the stories from this era. As a kid watching them we had no idea what they was going through. Great documentary 👏
Brett always tried to go back to Vince because he loved WWF (E) and it wasn't ever about money. So it was always love and loyalty from him, typically from the Harts and that's how they were rewarded. A dead brother who was not protected enough from his stunt and a backstab from a father figure. I may have a lot of admiration for Vince cunning business man nature, this is an unforgivable treacherous and heartless behavior. Completely honorless

Vince agreed to the terms until he got himself some cold feet... Not only did he try to escape his own offer he also swindled with Bret's fellows to screw him. It's not about respecting our word for the sake of being good men, it's about thinking of what image we reflect to the industry by being a backstabber

Bret war nicht nur "hart" im Ring, er hatte als Mensch immer ein Herz(Heart), und das wird für die Ewigkeit in die Geschichte eingehen. Vince ist ein Geldgeier, Bret nicht. Er ist ein wie man heutzutage nennt, wahrer Ehrenmann.

What I like most about this is that it runs in a fresh track. Rather than rehashing events through the usual old thread, this recalls some oft-left-out details that makes it feel fresh AND brings up memories of events (lived or read about). Liking this very much. Thanks Sam et al.

So if I'm hearing this right: Bret's contract that he signed in 1996 would consist of being a talent from 1997-2000 earning $5 million, then front office from 2001-2008 earning $500k a year and then sitting at home as a statue earning $250k per year for the rest. Wow. We've all heard the endless stuff about Montreal but THIS is spectacular stuff. A+ work.

This was one of the greatest documentaries I’ve ever watched. I thought I knew everything about the Montreal Screwjob until watching this. Very detailed explanations on what was going on. Man I really miss this era of wrestling
Watching the beginning where context is being laid down, it makes you realize how cold-blooded Vince was in totality over the wrestling business... Dude LITERALLY took over pro wrestling and reigns supreme to this day...Bischoff won the battles early on but damn did Vince ever come out on top and win the war... That would suck having to then go work under Vince

It's honestly interesting to first hear about left out details like practically the majority of the locker room being rightfully pissed with Vince and siding with Bret including Undertaker (where his anger was actually completely justified as the 'locker room leader'). Awesome work on the documentary.
I bet it was hard being Shawn Michaels for a few weeks after that night with all that resentment in the locker room.
Bret didn't want to put Undertaker over either. People like to forget that.

Yea but it wouldn’t have been memorable at all. At that time, they were all about gaining heat for HBK. And it definitely did that lol. They probably shouldn’t have told Bulldog he was going to win and let him dedicate the match to his sister, that was fucked. But I thought that shit was great
I believe his father Vince McMahon Sr had more integrity and cared more about his reasons than his son, after all Vince tries sues Martha, Owen's widow.

Excellent job on putting this together. It really gives an alternative view into the infamous Montreal Screw Job. In that sense, it wasn't Bret screwed Bret as we've all come to know/hear, but rather Vince screwed Bret (hence the poor decision on his part)

Now I am even more convinced that Bret was genuinely a nice guy and loyal towards the company.. Vince and Shawn were the villains. I can completely understand why it took so long for Bret to get over after what had happened to him.. for others it Is just easy to lambast Bret for not getting over the incidence ... The best there was, the best there is and the best there ever will be ❤️

I think Bret was overall a good guy, but I also think he has a much higher opinion of himself than deserved. I think in essence he was loyal to WWF, and deserves to be commended for that. Conversely I think he gets an almost martyr treatment that he doesn't really deserve.
I don't think the Screwjob was right, but I think Bret had a lot of fault in it. While being upset with Shawn was fair, it's fairly undeniable that this occurs because rightfully or wrongfully Bret was being petty in his refusal to lose to Shawn.
That said my main issue with the martyrdom is that it wasn't like Brets career was destroyed. He was leaving to make almost double and thanks to this as the hottest star in wrestling. Just unfortunate that WCW didn't use him well.
I also struggle because in his book Bret always gives himself the benefit of the doubt but doesn't seem to do that for others. Example: he took steroids but it was ok for him because he was recovering from injuries but everybody else was bad for it.

It's a story most of us have heard 1000 times yet this kept me absolutely gripped throughout. I initially put it on as background fodder but couldn't really turn away. Sam's delivery of these docs are absolutely superb and completely engaging. Brilliant work from everyone involved. You all deserve so much with the work you put out. Love that you can do this and then have the heads up or squid game challenges. Both absolutely brilliant.t but in completely contrasting ways.
as I was cleaning up from working extremely late tonight. I had CZcams playing for well over 2 hours beyond what i had originally played. I just let it go down its up next rabbit hole when this documentary started. It had been playing for a while and i hadnt really been listening until something about the ultimate warrior caught my attention. I then restarted to listen to the entire documentary from the beginning. Not knowing i was starting an hour plus documentary that despite starting it over from the beginning after 1am this piece absolutely REFUSED to let me turn it off! Its 245am central time! I'm going to hate life tomorrow bit DAMN was this an EPICALLY well done piece of wrestling history! Bravo!

What Bret Hart did was a heroic thing and really for all the boys in the back. People and casual fans don't realize Vince McMahon or anyone else in charge of WWE is cold blooded as fuck. If Bret was not as popular, charismatic, or influential as he is they would have written him off WWE with no explanation. Even a star like Kamala they fed to sharks. Bret Hart was a hero backstage because he stood against the machine. He was a great hero to undertaker, mick foley, mark henry, the rock, list goes on, and many others. He stood against the clique and establishment, and bullshit other wrestlers were going through. He wasn't a mark. Oh no, he cared about putting a good product out for the fans, and making sure the boys sacrificing their lives got taken care of. If you think ill of Bret and listen to the hee haws of Scott Hall, just look at kamala's shoot interviews to see how "great" retired WWE wrestlers get treated when they leave. And all the b.s. they go through when they are in the company.
I spoke to Kamala and Mick at a convention about retired legends and how they have no medical insurance or monthly workman's compensation checks to hold them off while they're not working and there is so much u just illegal shit with WWE having titles as contractors for the boy's who are clearly employees on contracts unable to work shows for other promotions itß sad and very disheartening but u are so right

This Documentary was so much more than just Montreal! It is literally the most in depth showing of Pro Wrestling's inner working during this industries defining moment, The "Monday Night War". Quoting Sting at the HOF induction: "All the stuff that happens backstage...that's where the money is!"
When a much younger version of me was sitting at home watching it all happen on TV little did I know I'd still be fascinated by all of this more than 25 years later. Great documentary! I have a feeling wrestling fans will still be talking about this in 100 years time.

As much of a Shawn fan I was, growing up watching his 2nd run in the 2000's was just amazing to experience. Seeing him main event WM 23 against6 John Cena was crazy. But even with all that, I still think Bret is the better Human being.
Perhaps we're 2 sides of the same coin, my friend: I was the biggest mark for Bret Hart growing up (still am, tbh lol), but his reign as greatest in-ring performer is relatively short. So w/ that said, if I were ranking wrestlers based on their career as a whole... I might just have to give the edge to HBK

I hate that I stopped watching wrestling in like 2000-2001 solely for the fact that I missed HBKs second run. That probably would’ve kept me watching
I think there was a lot of jealously and anger on Brett’s part as well. I’ve watched other video’s/interviews and I think a lot of ego was on Bret’s part. I think his home persona is quite different from what he puts out there.

Bret’s story is he could hear Vince yelling to ring the bell.
When Shawn is about to put Bret in the sharpshooter the Ref tells the cameras to get ready. The Ref also signals to ring the bell immediately. Either the Ref was in on it or everyone was in on it including Shawn and Bret.

This was one of the “screw jobs” that was at a high level and out in the open planned at the last minute. Something tells me in this business, especially back in the day there were more than several “screw jobs” with many wrestlers that the public never knew about ,protected by kayfabe
I know this is a year old comment but yes it's happened alot. It's known that within minutes of a finish of a match the results can change . But most of the time it dint matter what happens both wrestlers are cool with it. Rarely tho one gets mad and is upset bout the finish. But due to kayfabe and not wanting to piss vince off they go with the flow in front of fans and on TV but backstage is when it's all hashed out. No telling how many brawls that have happened but never been talked about.

You know, I had somehow missed this video from you boys forever but as a fan of so many sporting CZcams channels this kind of deep dive rewind reminds me so much of the special on LeBron James winning a title in Cleveland that Secret Base did a while back. That's no bad thing, I love the framework of taking someone to a place in time who may need context at every turn. It's a brilliant piece of work.

Great job going into detail and telling the story from multiple sides! A true gold standard for a documentary that masterfully immerses the viewer into the minds of the people involved and drives home not just how major the event was, but how wild pro wrestling's hidden reality can be just as its surface entertainment can and how the two often blend together from that. A well done documentary that thoroughly explored what bubbled up to The Montreal Screwjob incident. As someone who had a basic idea of what had happened, I feel like I don’t really need to go anywhere else to get further information as this covered basically everything.
