- For four decades, Vince McMahon owned, operated, expanded, and merchandised of what is today known as WWE, turning those three letters into the shorthand that defines the wrestling industry as
many know it. Following his shock retirement in 2022, we look back at Vince's legacy in The RISE And FALL Of Vince McMahon.

Crazy how they squeezed 40+ years of Vince McMahon’s wrestling career in just over 30 minutes… this is easily a docuseries but this is well done 👍🏾
Cough cough "sports entertainment" career 😂
@@MrRenovalentine my bad this “new” era of wrestlers having wrestling matches in a wrestling ring has grown on me already 😂😂😂
Couldn’t agree more. This could easily be a weeks long series. But they did a really nice job of condensing it and keeping it concise.
Agreed! Vince is one hell of a guy. I hope he enjoys his retirement.
@@MrRenovalentine what's the cough for?
"In the end, Vince McMahon Was no different from those old territorial promoters he went to war with, like them his career was derailed by the actions of Vince McMahon"
Good grief, that is the greatest exclamation mark of a video I've probably ever heard
In other words, Vince screwed Vince.
Vince was and still is wwe. I miss Vince and the old wwe. Please come back Vince!
What's crazy about Vince McMahon is that only actions by himself were able to "put him down." Like, nobody could bring him down. Only someone like him, aka, himself.
Honestly that's probably the case for most people in a position of power. They have eliminated all possible threats, leaving their own hubris as the only thing left that can bring them down.
@@TeamTowers1 It's almost like nobody should have that much power
so what you're saying is..... Vince screwed Vince?
..... I'll see myself out....
@@noname144able No, you're right!
@@noname144able seems like Vince screwed anything female with a pulse
"A dragon only time could slay". What a great line. Don't think I'd ever heard it before.
Great stuff.
Well...more like a lot lizard easily slayed by the SEC & FBI in a single month.
@@TheCaptainSlappy So, time and the FBI, then
@@ratreides6353 Time isn't a department of the justice. So the FBI then.
@@TheCaptainSlappy Time is the ONLY department of justice... because it's the only one that treats everyone equally (and yes, that's even counting relativistic time dilation).
But, in a pinch, the FBI will do.
@@ratreides6353 So...the FBI. You could have just led with the FBI on that.
For better or for worse, Vince is the most important figure in wrestling history.
Important in what way? Destroying the business?
@@paranoidewok6772 Expansion. Like it was said by pretty much every old school wrestler/booker/manager/etc, in the hundreds of interviews you can find on CZcams, everyone involved in the territory system didn't want anything to change, just keep everything the way it was. Sure, it's possible someone else could've come along later if it wasn't McMahon who did it, but history shows it was him that did.
@@paranoidewok6772 In a way yes. He did in fact destroy the territory business end of things then popularised wrestling twice in the 80s and then again in the late 90s. IMO the reason WWE lost favour was because they went total corporate by becoming a publicly traded company in 09. That and the changing to a PG rating which was the most unpopular times in WWE outside the 80s I think destroyerd wrestling's cred as a legit sport. However without MCmahon would we have gotten stars like Austin The Rock and Undertaker or even newer stars such as John Cena Batista etc.
Sports Entertainment
A real life Mr. Burns lol
My worst fear: AEW secretly having a new buyer: "IT WAS ME, AUSTIN!! IT WAS ME ALL ALONG!!!" Not only would that be the greatest & ultimately worst swerve of all time, but would also be my ultimate exit from being a fan entirely.
That would require so many things to fall into place I doubt it would ever happen
@@Gammera2000 dont say that. This is Vince McMahon were talking about
I think you've conditioned by Vince to expect all these "trolololol, that'll show the marks" swerves a little too much. Real life is just a teeny tiny bit different than that.
There's an assumption here that AEW is up for sale? It's not a publically traded company, and even if it was, sale of stocks to the majority shareholder of the biggest competitor could be blocked rather easily.
@@Tampafan33 Yeah, but this is a now disgraced Vince McMahon. If this played out in the early 2000's maybe, but I don't think AEW would want to associate with him. Best case scenario his appearance would get some cheep buzz, but it would piss off the loyal 900k who tune into Dynamite, especially if they actually tried pushing Vince, or bringing him into creative.
Whole thing makes me think of how Impact started going down hill after they signed Hulk Hogan.
Gonna need an update to this one
The Bonus DLC Epilogue where Vince goes out for dinner with John Cena, grows a moustache, forces his way back into WWE in to order to sell it to Endeavour to form TKO with UFC and then gets ousted out all over again and so he must sell all of his stock to pay his legal fees. 😆
The video I thought I'd never see.
What goes up, must come down.
@@pumpkinking5397 Well we all get old. Retirement was coming one way or the other.
@@12MRJERSEY I thought he would die in post.
Me too
I thought there was no chance...
Extremely well-done, and the facts and dates are spot on. One thing not mentioned is that Vince initially used the "All American Wrestling" slot on USA to showcase wrestlers from other promotions, getting rival promoters to send in tapes. The effect of this was that Vince got to promote talent that he was about to pluck away, and didn't have to lift a finger. It's an overused word, but that really was genius.
Vince was out there playing chess when the others were playing checkers
That closing line was beautifully fitting, a great watch as usual.
Love him or hate him, he's the greatest wrestling promoter ever, and the most important figure in all of pro wrestling
the dude was a genius promoter who luckily had competition who refused to change/made very bad decisions.
Greatest? Eh...call me a heretic, but I say that title belongs to Eric Bischoff.
@@DoomRulz Yh WCW did well. Bret would agree.
Without a doubt
Growing up watching WWF i don't remember ever having any knowledge that the announcer Vince McMahon owned the company. I just remember his PPV intros of "welcome everyone..." Wasn't until the late 90's with the Mr. McMahon character when he leaned into being the evil corporate owner.
Evil corporate owner, so vince played himself.. very convincing!
Vince really stayed in character in and outside the ring
Excellent video Ross. Really enjoying the more journalistic content you've been doing lately.
"The composite drawn wasn't exactly a sunlit landscape"
Damn who wrote the script for this? Well done
Genuinely never thought I’d see this. 2022 has been a crazy as hell year for wrestling, and we still have four months left.
Also, really hard to trust any Mushnick written piece on the WWE, given his bias against wrestling and wrestling fans in general.
wait until you see what 2024 has in store for Vinnie Mac or should I say Vinnie the poo 💩
Video also doubles as a good history of the WWF's controversies. Good job guys. Truth be told, while I think it's best for the product, this is a terrible way for the old man to step down. I believe things would have been different if the people Vince was close to had any good mind to tell him that the shit was doing was a terrible idea, but this is what happens when you build a team of yes men who want to ensure their futures, and not a team who are about bettering the product's future.
Exactly well said
I think they were all afraid of hearing Vince's catchphrase personally.
Tbf this is imo the only way he could have been taken out of the game, he would never legitimately leave WWE on his own accord but forcing him out over scandals makes INCREDIBLE sense
The video title is misleading. Vince hasnt fallen or his company.
Chris Benoit’s fault, never forget.
Wow! What an amazing mini documentary! The pace was fluid. The story didn't get lost in too many details and it made sure to spend some time on some of the bigger moments in the 40 year span of Vince McMahon. A well thought out, well executed, video. I congratulate you! Keep up the great work!!! 👍🏽
This is a really well delivered piece of work. Much of the story is already known but it's great to see it told in one coherent time line. Good work putting it all together it made for entertaining viewing
Vince was and still is wwe. I miss Vince and the old wwe. Please come back Vince!
1980s Vince is way better than remaining years of Vince's version
Attitude era Vince is the best made him a billionaire, crushed his rivals and Stone cold and Rock are bigger than Hulk Hogan
The late 90s were good.
If you haven't already done so then watch wrestling bios on CZcams he does a reliving the war with raw and nitro check it out it's amazing
He retired at 77 on top. I wont say that is a down fall. It just ran its course. Most people are retired at 77. His life and career was a big success.
Vince McMahon ruled wrestling for most of his adult life and retired a billionaire, if that's a fall please sign me up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well done, Ross and Co. As well-written as anything you guys have produced.
Definitely, always enjoy these first class all the way.
34 minutes isn't enough to cover this. But I know you guys did the best you could.
An entire season of Dark Side of the Ring
Yes, like the Screw Job vid is an hour long, Vince deserves a few hours surely! Still a very good vid tho 👍🏾
Yeah was only up to 2001 with 5 minutes left and hadn't really covered anything that they haven't gone over multiple times before. Could easily watch for another 20 mins
@@c15page - Or, at least half of one.
Very well put together video. I actually learned some new things I didn't know about the early years of McMahon so thank you
Hogan saved Vinces butt in that steroid trial. This is one of the reasons why hogan and vince have remained close over the years. Had hogan came out, and the gov knowing how big hogan was at the time and said "yeah he encouraged us to take roids." the gov could have very well broken up the wwe after that trail.
Rewatching the buildup to WM12 was a nice flash of nostalgia and really shows just how instrumental he was to the product.
It’s amazing that he was able to form such an empire. Reminds me of the Roman Empire slowly swallowing up Carthage, Gaul, ect. Wrestlers were able to make a good living. Merchandising wrestling, amazing intros and showmanship for wrestlers, tv deals, paper views, marketing. Like Vince or not he created an empire that revolutionized the wrestling world from the Stone Age into the space age. I don’t blame him for coming back. The wwe is his baby.
"you'd have to go back to a time when there were only two Star Wars movies"
...That..actually made me gasp a little. As Ron Simmons would say; Damn...
That's just research.
That last line went in hard. Thank you for this video and making the whole saga so digestible
How exactly did he fall? He is a billionaire and still owns the majority share of the WWE
ancientness
Great piece of work Ross and Cultaholic!
Great video!! You covered so many things in such a relatively short video!
in the beginning, vince was the wwf's biggest driving force. at the end, he was the wwe's biggest obstacle.
Boy did this video date quick. You never thought you would see him fall. And you never will. Hes Back.
The Stone Cold vs Mr McMahon storyline was a highlight of my childhood.
Great content Ross, glad you guys did a long video on Vince.
Oh how this needs an update now. Or a part 2 since well you know
I remember when professional wrestling went global back in the early 1980's. It was amazing. Thanks for the history lessons and a trip back in time.
No one has or ever will come close to Vince. However Eric Bishoff dominating the Monday night wars for as long as he did back is why I’ll always give Eric his flowers. Even though we all know how that ended lol
I'm a diehard NWA/WCW fan, although I pretty much stopped watching it around 1990 when I started high school. I didn't like WWF because it seemed so kiddie like, while I was a Flair/4 Horsemen fan, but I can't deny Vince and his success, he won in the end, great video dude..
Incredible to come back to this...since you would need to create a whole new full documentary about just the past year.
What goes up must come down, Vince is no different.
@@mgtwrestling123 no he isn’t. At the end of the day, Vince is still a human, no matter how much how much money, influence, or power he has. He isn’t untouchable, and his downfall proved that.
@@jayfreeman5117 but it's not his downfall..Though I don't like his booking mostly recent booking..But there was no downfall..He just retired because he is old..If he wish he can still come and take back his position and nobody would be able to stop him..His company is still there and he is still the most powerful person of that company..
@@rjuniverse7289
I have to agree with you.
@@rjuniverse7289 he just retired bc he was in trouble again and didn't want another scandal.
@@k-dogg9086 he has been dealing with scandals bigger than this for long period of time..lol..Do you think he is afraid??He just left because he felt it was his time..Or else he can still come now and be the CEO as the investigation has been already closed..Also, he still holds the highest share in the company.
Interesting detail:
The way the WWE started falling hard to nearly going out of business during the Monday Night Wars only to bounce back stronger than ever before falling again can actually be seen 10 years prior with the Disney/Don Bluth animation war.
So glad Vince Sr. isn't here to see how his Son totally disgraced the business he formed. Makes me wonder if senior was like his son? Vince has a beautiful wife and fathered two children but still couldn't keep his hands off the employee's especially the young women and then forced them to keep quiet about it. No wonder why Shane doesn't want anything to do with his father's business.
I know right.
This video is very well made! Can’t wait to see the update video because this story isn’t over.
I don't think McMahon has gone anywhere, he's still calling the shots behind the scene🤔
It would be illegal if he was as he would be considered an outside influence …. But he’s Vince so anything’s possible
I think we're gonna need an addendum on this one
Man that 90's era was the best wrestling you will ever see
I prefer 2000's and 80's wrestling over 90's. Same goes for music and fashion.
Loved this video! Very well done Ross! 👏🏻
Solid voice over work from Ross, really enjoyed listening to this 👍
I can't believe I am still alive to see McMahon fall
Drink it in, MAN
That was a fantastic piece, thanks Ross
As an American everytime i hear you guys or wrestling bios say 'McMahon' i cant help but repeat it. This is gonna be a long one.
Also, the word 'year'
The editing in this video is top notch. Loved watching it!
I was at the smackdown where stephanie announced vince's retirement.
My favorite McMahon was when he was screaming WrestleMania promos and opens in the early 1990s
Epic and brilliantly done. How long do you think before we'll have the Netflix material out there? Also, I've been into this s--t for too many years ♥️
33:41 Vince coming back in 2023: I WILL NEVER RETIRE, DAMNIT
Watching this really puts into perspective how VKM literally live long enough to see himself become the villain
Technically speaking one could say he always was
And in some ways he was the one to create the villains of others
He drove the NWA to its paranoid actions that inevitably led to ECW’s creation if you look at it from one angle for example
1997: Bret screwed Bret. 2022: Vince screwed Vince 😁
😂😂😂
Incredible job on this one guys. Excellent work
Thanks for the video Ross and editor
Without him, we wouldn't have WWE but now that he's gone, another WWE Golden Age has begun....
@Willy Massey true but so far it’s largely been all positive
I mean it says a lot that the only negatives are problems caused a a la Vince that are much harder to fix by Trips and Steph
Namely: replacing Dunn, fixing NXT 2.0 and UK, and the recent issues with the first NILS class we’ve heard about
But he’s largely fixed or is fixing everything else: made titles relevant again, getting back poorly released talent, rebuilding badly damaged divisions, and giving more attention to a more diverse roster
I think you need to do an updated part 2 of this video
Brilliant stuff from Cultaholic yet again.
Great video! Keep up the great work!
WWE seems to be better after Vince left. I think the wrestling game bypassed him.
What?!? No way
Time will tell. Hopefully there will eventually be a hybrid of oldschool wrestling and "sports entertainment ". Right now, I guess that it's just a matter of opinion and personal taste.
It always was a mix of drama, sports, and slapstick comedy.
I agree.
It took long enough for him to see any sort of comeuppance. It doesn't matter what he did for the business. He did horrible things
I think people need to look into wrestling history a bit more outside of WWE products, it'll put in perspective how McMahon killed the US territories. Death of The Territories by Tim Hornbaker is a really good one.
@@lambchops1 people put him up on a pedestal he doesn't deserve. I was born in 1990, even I know what he's done...
@@melissaroszkowski8911 what do you know that you think he deserves to be punished for?
@@phantom8926 steroids he KNEW were being touted. Countless wrestlers being taken out by CTE. Making women objects rather than performers. Ruining Chyna. Sexual harassment and assault. Owen Hart. Shall I continue? I surely can.
@@melissaroszkowski8911 the steroids used by those wrestlers were still legal before the trial, hence why they couldn't convict Vince.
Concussions weren't taken seriously by any sports or entertainment profession until the Benoit events happened as unfortunate as that was.
Arguably, under Vince, women in wrestling became a much bigger deal than any other promotion, since WCW didn't even have women's title but WWF/E did.
The sexual assault/harassment allegations are just that-allegations until and/or unless proven true.
Owen Hart's death, while tragic, wasn't Vince's fault. I'd argue that someone actually effected and impacted by Owen would be a more likely culprit if you think someone should be held responsible for it.
Well done on this piece sir, good job.
Its just the best storyline they've ever done.
I think vince has never looked so much like his father as he does now, uncanny resemblence now.
The last paragraph is an absolute gem! Stellar phraseology. 👍
vince mcmahons retirement or death if it wasnt under controversy would be HUGE. He woould have had the largest tribute ever with every wrestler past and present in the arena clapping for him and paying tribute, documentaries, probably a book. And even a movie would of all happened. Damn shame how it played out. but its time to pay the piper.
Yall no this should be done in parts lmao tell the whole Vinny Mac story for us
His end was meek? He made news worldwide

Always loved that Andre/Snuka photo. I beleive it's the same one used in a, Topps/(OPC in Canada) trading card, from the promotion's "Rookie" foray in to the Bubblegum Card business!
That set, began a 40 year obsession with WWF and trading cards, in general!
Cheers from Canada
I didn't know Vince was out as it hasn't exactly made headlines over my way, but I can't say I am surprised. Very good documentary.
To give an idea on how big of a deal Lauper was - in 1984 she was a bigger star than Prince or Madonna.
For around 1 year…
She was big enough to piss off black musicians like Motown, hence the movie The Last Dragon which was created as a diss against her.
Can we get a rise and fall of the Dynamite Kid??
u make really good videos! i like your content alot.
Hes back on the rise again can you do updated video :)
Going to my first Raw ever tonight. Wouldn't be happening if it weren't for Vince stepping down a month ago. It's been years since I've genuinely been excited about watching wrestling.
Yes me too, It had his up and down, but it's the longest down without interest even watched good matches, but no excitation or caring to the performers. The young guys today look like Pop teen singers, wrestled the same way, gym trained actors or passion driven vocation! Hope you had fun at Raw...
Absolute legend. Greatest heel there will ever be.
Awesome job Ross and the team!
We need a update on this now lol.
Looking forward to Part 2!
We need an updated version of this.
aside from a few "maybe that didn't happen that way" bits, a really enjoyable watch
i still think he'll return, and everyone will thank him for his presence
as for why he went away, it was his own money he was spending so it shouldn't have really had any bearing on what he was doing outside the ring, he'd "left" linda years before if you are be believe what you read
thank you vince
Gotta make a video on the whole Sydney Lauper thing. Sounds like such a pivotal point in wrestling but none of these videos ever spend more than a couple of lines on it. How/why did it happen? Did she have a connection to the group before getting directly involved?
And just like that, Vince came back. He knows aew is going to bloom into Monday nights and that when wwe will have it's next big boom.
Prelude to Dark Side Of The Ring season 4?
THE FALL ?? THE MAN STILL OWN WWE WRESTLING. THE HIGHEST PAID. VINCE UNIFIED PRO WRESTLING. WE ALL WITNESSED IT OVER THOSE DECADES. THANKS A MILLION VINCE...WRESTLING WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO BECOME AS BIG AS IT IS. I THOUGHT WRESTLING WOULD GO OUT OF STYLE A VERY LONG TIME AGO. THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA HATED VINCE FOR MAKING "FAKE" WRESTLING SO POPULAR . THE MEDIA NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHAT THE FANS SAW IN PRO WRESTLING .
You are so damn thorough. Thank you! 🙏
For me, wrestling died with Vince's tweet. I was born in 1981 so let that give you an idea of who my favorite wrestlers were, still are, and always will be.
As for Vince McMahon, I feel like I owe him for making my childhood so great.. So many awesome memories, thank you Vince, and remember that your 80s babies will always be right behind you BROTHER..❤️ 🇺🇸🤼😢
Same. Born in 84. Shame to see Vince wants to sell the company. It should stay with the family.
There's an alternative timeline somewhere in the galaxy where WCW were the victors of the Monday night wars and went on to buy out WWE and I'd love to see the state of the product if that happened.
I don't think Vince ever would've sold, even if he had lost the war. He would likely have held on to the IP, accepted the position as the second biggest wrestling organization in the world, and bided his time until the pendulum of wrestling fan preference swung back in his direction. Basically, IMO, he would've done what he did in the actual MNWs even if it took decades
That was never gonna happen, Nitro beat raw for 83 weeks out of which hogan was champion for 71.5 weeks, nwo was the primary reason it was drawing ratings. Eric bischoff had one good idea and he didnt know what to do apart from that, hell, he didnt even know to give it a proper ending so he kept milking it and eventually sting vs nWo started to suck and ppl got bored
