    I bought my Ryker Rally a few weeks ago. I'm 77 years young and have been riding, and owning motorcycles since I was 15.I've had Suzukis,Kawasakis,Yamahas,Harleys and Hondas of all sizes. Also had an Ossa and a Hodaka.
    My last Goldwing, an '07, just got to be too heavy for my old legs. I'm not even going to check my Rally's gas mileage. I absolutely LOVE this machine! I no longer have to worry about gravel or balance, and the power-to-weight ratio makes this thing a fantastic and fun ride! Can't wait to get on it again!!

      I’m a couple years behind you in age. I relate to your experience. I had to sell my 2009 Aprilia Touno . I almost dropped it . That’s when I realized I either go to the gym or sell the bike. I sold the bike. I took a test ride on a Ryker and found happiness. 😁. I have a 900 ace with max mount and optional adjustable shock. Also a sport windshield. Excellent video Mark. Funnily enough my neighbour was just asking me what the gas mileage was like on the Ryker yesterday. I guessed it was somewhere around there. I find it interesting that there is that improvement in the first few thousand miles. I remember thinking, after your first video on the subject, that I should keep note of my mileage for that very reason, so I downloaded an app that would do the job. After nearly 3000 miles I’ve still not used the app 😂. I’ve never been very organised lol. On a separate note, as I’ve said before, I just love where the road goes past that lake. Octane has to do with compression. The higher the compression ratio of an engine, the higher the recommended octane. You don't want the fuel to ignite under pressure, you want the fuel to ignite with the timing of the spark plug.

I never really know how much fuel is left in the tank because the gauge is so inaccurate. When I fuel up each tank, I zero out the odometer and figure what I get to 120 miles I should be refueling. • @budyser365
      @budyser365  Před 4 lety +1

      The Ryker tank size is 5.28 gallons. The guage will show full until about 25 percent of your tank is empty and then it starts dropping fast. Don't go by distance to empty. That is also inaccurate. The best thing to do is reset your trip meter with every fuel up and refuel when it says 150 miles. The MPG is very accurate though when looking at your gauge.

    If you are getting better gas mileage with higher octane... You are almost certainly pulling timing on lower octane gas.

    • @budyser365
      @budyser365  Před 4 lety

      The computer compensates for the octane in use. .7 extra gas mileage is not worth the price of 93 Octane. The manual says it is fine and I trust BRP engineers. Also, no pinging or performance loss from 87 or 89 octane. Why waste money.

    • @randomstuff1830
      @randomstuff1830 Před 4 lety

      Yup, the computer is compensating for sure (because the better mileage should be the lowest octane without the computer detecting knock, it doesn't have an octane sensor). So you ARE getting knock, but the computer is adjusting before you can hear it, and you ARE getting less power, as retarding the timing, and all other ways of compensating for octane below what the engine can do without pulling back always does. You are getting worse mileage as well..
      That said, if they say it in the manual, then you probably won't void your warranty or anything, but if this isn't a commuter vehicle that you are putting tons of miles on, it really doesn't seem worth it to lower responsiveness, power, and potentially increase wear on the engine (depending on how well the computer compensates.) Now, if it's cold where you are, you are more likely to be OK with lower octane, your altitude also will play a part (high altitude effectively lowers compression). In the end, the question is more than .7 mpg, and most people didn't buy a ryker to get the most efficient vehicle,they probably bought it for some mix of fun and value, so you have to decide what you find is important. I'm more of a performance guy, who lives in Texas (heat) at a reasonably low altitude, so I'm definitely sticking to 93, and my dealer even told me that the 900/rally runs noticeably better on 93.

      @@randomstuff1830 Most modern fuel injected motorcycles and cars do not require higher octane fuels unless specifically stated in the owners manual. The Ryker has a modern computer that constantly monitors fuel trim and detonation and makes the appropriate adjustments in the fuel air mixture to compensate for engine knock. No knock equals no damage. Octane did matter when only a vacuum advance was used to correct knock which isn't the case here. If the Ryker had a Turbo or a much larger engine I would run 93 Octane. The Ryker in it's current form does not benefit from a higher octane. The small mpg increase is not worth the money and there is no noticeable power gain.

    • @randomstuff1830
      @randomstuff1830 Před 4 lety +1

      @@budyser365 I'm in agreement with you until you bet to the last 2 sentences, which your second sentence proves false. If the computer in compensating by adjusting fuel and spark to avoid detonation then is 100% absolutely is negatively impacting power. I don't care if the "butt dyno" says that there is no power loss, there 100% is, if you did not gain power by advancing timing, then all engines would run 87 octane, and have massive advance for spark.. In the current form the Ryker ABSOLUTELY benefits from 93 octane, more than just the .7 mpg increase.
      I will agree though, that the computer is likely fast enough to respond to the smallest amount of spark knock and probably does not need more than whatever is in the manual to be "safe" for the engine (as you point out, they'd not warranty it that way if it wasn't safe enough for it)
      Remember, the claim here is with NO LOSS OF POWER, which 100% MUST be false based on how fuel injection works, and it is proven that the computer is compensating for lack of octane by having 93 get better fuel economy (since the lower number should have better mileage if there was no adjustments being made to avoid detonation). I've modified enough fuel injection systems, to know exactly how spark and fuel affect performance, and have plenty of maps of NA and turbo vehicles in HP Tuners, along with the resultant dyno charts to be VERY aware of the relationship to timing and performance (there is also an optimal for mileage too)..
      Also, i agree that .7 mpg doesn't merit the 15 cents per gallon that i pay vs 87, but knowing that my computer doesn't need to pull timing, and knowing that means I'll have more power, probably better throttle response, yeah it's worth it to me, on that big 5 gallon fuel tank, we're talking about less than 1$... If you want me to change my position on the power thing, you will need dyno numbers, to prove something that goes against all the laws of physics and experience tuning that I, and the people that i know who build race vehicles for a living have.

    I'll never understand why some of you get such bad mileage. I have 6105 miles on my 900 ACE and have NEVER seen less than 37 mpg even when new. I admit I never take it out of Eco mode, don't need to. 98% of my riding is on country roads, some limited Interstate, and I stick to the speed limits or less if I'm not being followed (I won't hold anyone up). I have followed the owners manual and have always used 91 octane as they recommend. I weigh 190, 5' 10". While the internet provides some good information, only those like you who do these youTubes are heard most of the time and divergent views, opinions, and real world experiences of others are not. I worry that some potential buyers may be dissuaded from purchasing based on just a few videos. Not knocking you, but I think folks should take everything with a grain of salt as they say. Thanks for listening. PS I'm 75 years old!

      Paul thanks for your input. 37 MPG doesn't sound unreasonable running 91 octane and keeping it in ECO mode all the time.
      You also weigh 80 pounds less than me. That would definitely factor into the equation. Also, a windshield would probably give you an extra mile per gallon.
      Most people don't run the Ryker in ECO mode all the time. I think you are the exception to the rule. My figures are about the average for most people. I know Ryker owners who only get around 29 or 30 MPG.
      Rider weight, windshield, driving conditions, throttle, and many other factors will determine what mpg you get.
      I am only giving my honest figures. I am not trying to stop anyone from buying a Ryker. It is actually the opposite. It is the most fun motorcycle that I have ever owned. I wish everyone could experience one.
      I just want the average owner or buyer to know what to expect if they are around my weight and drive in my conditions.
      Most Ryker owners including myself didn't buy the Ryker for MPG. We bought it for the ultimate wind therapy and some of the most fun you will ever have on a motorcycle.
      Good hearing from you Paul. Keep in touch. I always value your opinion.

      If I’m gentle I’ve gotten 38 mpg but If I flog it hard that goes down to as low as 26-28 depends how hard you drive it. Unfortunately with the cvt its a matter of not driving too fast, as the revs can get super high

    • @paulsturtz7638
      @paulsturtz7638 Před 4 lety +1

      That's the key, gentle on the throttle. Oh I goof around now and then, like to beat hot shots off the line when the lights turn green and watch them floor it to pass me. Another benefit is no more "clunk" in the drive line. I park in the garage and back out to the street. If I ease it out, I never hear a "clunk" the rest of the ride.

    Mountain roads really make your results unreliable. It needs to be done on open, flat highway. Your weight should be stated.
    It will take more fuel to carry a 250 pound man through mountainous terrain than it will take to carry a 150 pound man on flat, open highway.
    30 mpg sucks.

    • @budyser365
      @budyser365  Před 4 lety +2

      My height, weight, and riding conditions were stated at the beginning of the video.
      Nobody rides their Ryker on a flat, open highway for a full tank of gas. Those conditions are unrealistic. My video is more or less how the average rider will use their Ryker unless it is a daily driver.
      Obviously, many conditions will affect MPG like rider weight, hills, throttle, 2-up riding, road conditions, traffic, tire condition, accessories, and so many more. I can go on and on.
      These are my results and I believe they are about average. Some Ryker owners are in the 37 MPG range and some are more around 30 MPG.
      Did you ever watch a car commercial where the MPG stated is no where near what a normal human would get? They are in perfect conditions. This is a real world test using over a year of data.
      I do agree that 30 MPG isn't great. I bought my Ryker to have fun and forget about life for awhile. Most owners bought their Ryker for the same reason.
      My Honda XR650L gets about 50 MPG but that is like compairing apples to oranges. Compairing a 1 cylinder 650 to a 900 3 cylinder with an always engaged transmission (the main problem with Ryker MPG.)
      Anyway, I appreciate your input but I stand by my results.
