Toyota Camry Random Misfire FIXED!!!

  • Hey guys, I have a 2001 Toyota Camry that started mis firing all of a sudden. Mileage dropped and exhaust fumes started getting a little more smelly than usual. I was hoping it wasn't the catalytic converter so I decided to start replacing the cheapest parts. After looking at my spark plugs, the answer to my problem was pretty obvious but I still wanted to make sure. Thank God it was just the spark plugs. Around 77k miles on them with a lot of city driving. Replaced plugs and wires and it fixed the problem.

    My misfire only happens at startups when the engine is cold. Once it warms up, misfires goes away. Spark plugs and cables were replaced about 7,000 miles ago. I’ll follow your advice and recheck the plugs, wires, 02 sensor, fuel pump psi., and fuel filter.

    my 2000 Corolla settled off a lot after plugs replaced with platinum NGK (I will maybe keep it another 30K... now 273K miles original all from me). I also removed and cleaned the throttle body and inside the IAC valve (tedious) and reset the ECM (easy). A $35 scanner shows a mis-fire on cyl 3, so new NGK plugs are likely fine. I swapped the coil of #3 and #4 cylinder and will see tomorrow if the mis-fire "moved". It may be a simple coil replacement is the problem. The real problem was found to be a leak in the old intake manifold gasket. Replacement of the old gasket resolved the problem of 'too much air' since that gssket is AFTER the MAFS measures the air it thinks is going into the engine...

    Great video, Peter. Question for you. Since I have a similar engine as mine, there is a box directly beneath your air intake hose. Any idea what it is called? Thanks. :-)

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  Před 2 lety +1

      I'm not sure what it's called but it's like a silencer/ pre filter for the air coming in from the fender area of the car. If you remove that box, you will notice a louder intake and you will he getting warmer air since you will be getting air from the engine bay.

    I have an issue with my Camry where it bogs down when you come to a stop sign and hit the gas again idiling low at 500 rpm’s. It also backfires a good bit and when you roll down the windows you get a gas smell. I’ve been driving it like this for a while now and I know it had a skip on cyl 1 and 3 and I put coils and plugs on it still having a skip on 1 and a code for egr valve. Any ideas?

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  Před rokem +1

      Try to check maf sensor which is close to the air filter box. Also, make sure that there are no vacuum lines disconnected. These engines are pretty simple but one lose hose can cause mayhem. The idling low might also be cause by a vacuum leak and also a dirty throttle body. check out my other videos where I sprayed carb cleaner on my idle air control valve. See if that helps you a little. Also make sure your air filter is clean. Hope one of these helps you. Cheers.

The coil packs, and the check engine light was still on & then we started the car and unplugged the negative battery terminal and ran the car in park for 10 minutes to get the air/fuel ratio computer mixture right. • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Your check engine light is off because it reset the computer. Drive it around for a while and see if it turns back on. If it's sputtering still, check each wire to see if it's causing a misfire by unplugging them one by one while the engine is running. Hopefully you pinpoint it

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  Před 5 lety +1

      Egr modulator is very cheap. Like 20 bucks. That should clear your p0401 code. Once that's cleared, check to see if the misfire codes go away. If it doesn't, then start looking at your plugs. That's the next cheaper part. Hope you get to the solution soon. Thanks for the sub and like. Cheers.

    I still drive a 280K Corolla with a valve cover gasket and struts and little else really need besides routine stuff. I got NGK platinums vs. iridium since platinums are a bit cheaper and iridiums are not needed since the car may be sold off in a couple of years and platinum is Toyotas shipped standard in older cars. PCV valve and new coils and even refurb'd injectors are all cheap to get and you can do it yourself (or hire a mobile mechanic and SAVE when you get the parts for yourself ! )

    Hi Peter. When I start the car it seems to idle perfectly. As soon as I put it in gear it bogs down and runs like it's misfiring - it does back fire at times as well. At first it would clear up within a mile or so - lately it can last the entire trip. It didn't trigger the check engine light for 2 or 3 weeks - then I got frustrated and kept pounding the gas pedal and the light went on. Occasionally now, when it backfires , the light will blink. The codes are P0300, 0302 and 0303. If I let it warm up for 5 minutes - sometimes it will run perfect which leads me to believe it's not the plugs, wires or distributor. The problem is intermittent. Any thoughts ? Thanks', Ken

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  Před 3 lety +2

      P0302 and 03 could be sharing coils. The 300 code pops when more than 1 misfire is detected. You could have a defective coil. Try

      Usually when you get a misfire on 1 cylinder, you want to troubleshoot by swapping one coil pack to the other to see if the misfire moves. At that point, then change the damaged coil pack. If you change them all, then it will be harder to pin point the issue. Is it still cylinder 1 misfiring or other code? If it runs fine sometimes and other times not, it can also be a bad fuel injection that feeds that misfire cylinder or even a cracked spark plug. You need to read the code and see if it's still at cylinder 1 then go from there. Hope that helps. Cheers

    That's not the DTC is something else, check for vaccum leak or 02 sensor. If you start with the cheap repair you are just adding more to your bill. Random missfire are caused because o2 sensors or vaccum leaks, or battery fails. Usually a single missfire are caused because bad ignition coil or ignition wire.

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  Před 4 lety

      Yes! You are absolutely correct. The only thing is, i like to go with the cheapest part possible first. In This case, it's the plugs. Usually, random misfire points to plugs and vacuum leaks. Failed coil packs will point to the cylinders that it ignites. Ex: failed coil pack 1 could cause misfire on cylinder 1 and 2. Not a random misfire. I'm just glad it worked for me. Cheers.

      I did the thing where you unplug 1 coil at a time and every single one caused a change in tone for the engine. I changed spark plugs. Still have cel and vsc off and vsc light. 2001 Toyota Avalon idk what else it could be. Orileys reads random misfire detected on their scanners

  • @ws4835
    @ws4835 Před 3 lety +1

    So I changed the spark plugs and wires on my 2000 Camry 4cyl 5SFE. It now has a rough idle and a P0300 code. No CEL but I ran a scan to check and it has that code. Not sure why it’s the case.
    All in all I changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, cleaned the EGR valve and replaced the EGR vacuum modulator for a P0401, the intake tube because it was cracked and the valve cover gasket because it was leaking.
    Did I screw something up to end up with this P0300?

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  Před 3 lety +1

      P0300 is a random misfire. Usually when p030 shows up, it's connected to a mixture of electrical thay causes misfire. If your idle is rough, start with the wires to make sure they are in all the way. Also check to make sure none of them are defective and that you also placed them on the right spot. You can also start the car and check to see if pulling a spark plug wire causes rougher idle. If pulling a wire doesn't change the engine idle, then you know that's the problem. Do that to each one but wear gloves so you don't get electricuted.
