I'm surprised nobody is talking about it but Konstantin Koltsov also died the other day. I keep seeing Chris Simon brought up (and he should be), but I find it odd to not also talk about Koltsov (who also died of suicide)
If Flyers miss the playoffs is because their whole defense is injured and Walker was traded. The success they had earlier in the year was with Ristolainen, Seeler, Walker and then Drysdale in the lineup, now it's AHL kids and washed vets like Staal or Johnson. And don't forget Carter Hart was playing good and now their starting goalie is a rookie.
Those 5 guys are no longer on the team and they don't have the depth right now to finish the season strong, that's why they're allowing so many goals lately. Can't connect them missing playoffs to Torts scratching Coots while ignoring everything else going on.

As said below. Phily has gutted their defense and Couturier has to center the line that matches up with their opponents best all night. Also, Torts didn't want a captain. And once Torts doesn't like you, the fix is a moving target, because he can't be wrong.

Steve is correct to put that loss entirely on Keefe. The one thing I’d add is that the coach is to blame for the overall lack of a clear defensive system.
The guys on the ice have looked lost in our zone all year, forwards and defence. Either the system doesn’t work or the guys don’t understand it. They’re professional hockey players, there’s no way they should look this lost this often.
They're trying to play a defensive system but they only have 1 defenseman who can actually play defense
I’ve been watching this podcast for what feels like forever. That Flyers discussion is one of the more interesting conversations I’ve seen you guys have on this cast.
The fog in that organisation right now is really fascinating. Unless the Flyers miraculously go all the way and win the cup, this is going to be a tough first summer on the job for Briere.

Kyper and Bourne were making Torts out to be like Babcock (making himself the center of attention, mind games, etc.), but I like your takes, here.
As a Blue Jackets fan, Torts is just a stubborn, stubborn man. He'll always do what he feels is the right move, and literally nothing else (birthday, family in the stands, personal milestone, captaincy, special events, or even whether the hardass approach will work best with a given player) matters to him whatsoever. Makes for good theater, then eventually the players turn on him.

Torts benching him is his way of sending a message to the team. He’s your captain and best player and if he’s not playing well and can get benched so can anyone else. He’s also challenging his new captain to be the one to step up and lead the team by example
I mean it's a nice sentiment until it makes the players hate you for playing with their emotions when they just want to play hockey

A player saying they have no idea what more they can do strikes me as disingenuous. There's always more you can do, and I have a very hard time believing that Couturier hasn't been shown countless hours of game film where he isn't doing what's expected of him. He's scratched for 1 game -- it's not that big of a deal. It's only a big deal because no other coach does it, but it's the way that Tortorella has decided to manage his team.
I wholeheartedly believe that Couturier was scratched for hockey reasons, and Torts is actually being kind by not airing out those reasons to the media. Do you want him to have a press conference where he goes over every mistake Couturier made in the past month, all the issues that led to him being minus 16 over the stretch? There's no need to treat your captain like some fragile orchid -- he got taken out of the lineup, he'll continue being the captain, he'll be back in the lineup, and hopefully he'll have time to think about the things that his coaching staff has asked of him that he's not delivering on.

I think in the next CBA that the LTIR should be percentage based. If your 10days out from the Deadline, you shouldn't get the full extent of cap relief from that players contract because you've already paid out most of the contract for that year. I also think that a contract like Weber's or Price's shouldn't get a Team full relief on the Cap. If Arizona only got 50% then they would have to bring in more contract money to meet the floor, and the Habs or Knights wouldn't be able to bring in anyone. There isn't a cost for doing this, it allows for a bit of a loophole, that I think needs to be addressed.

With the four skaters in double digits, you know, the odd one sticking out for me is Tavares. He was never ever, EVER, worth that much.
He doesn't scream great captain to me, he's just... good. And you need to be more than that for 7x11 million.
Once he's off the books and Matthews gets the C, I think it will be better. He deserves it much much more.

Lemieux, Yzerman, and Ovie had all won a round by year 5. It took Matthews 7 to win a round.
Trading Marner would be a mistake. The core should have been built around Matthews and Marner (with Reilly). The right move would have been to trade Nylander at the height of his value and NOT sign Tavares. That money would have been better used on depth forwards and two top 4 defensemen (and/or possibly better goaltending options if available).

Gauthier has been caught on video telling torts he can’t wait to play him. Reason why cutter wanted a trade was because he wanted to turn pro a year earlier and flyers didn’t want to sign him yet. Nothing to do with torts

Patrick Roy's take on Pierre Engvall feels like a more polite, more reasonable yet still firm take than that of Torts on Couturier, yet the message seems to be the exact same... Torts is just being a stubborn old man at this point, even if I do understand and respect his take on "icing the 20 best players". It's just the packaging of the message that needs to be worked on IMHO. And yeah, I know, Torts will be Torts, but sometimes he needs to respect his surroundings a bit more instead of being that stubborn prick.

Torts absolutely does not treat all players equally. Vinnie Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Ryan Johansen, Patrik Laine... if you're a young star or a respected team leader he will single your ass out. Carl Hagelin "stinks", Anthony Duclair can't hang in the NHL. It's just what he does. He sewers guys.
If Treliving is competent at all I sure hope he explored moving brodie and I really hope the answer was no sensible deal hence why he stayed. Otherwise poor choices for Brad

The Oilers and Leafs should have traded Ceci for Brodie. Both guys strugelt this Season but performed well the years before and maybe could use a change of scenery. The leafs have to retain some of Brodies cap Hit but get a guy who scored a Series winning goal in Game 7.

Every human being has favorites snd not so favorites, hockeys no different, its grown men playing kids games, its gladiator games, thats why fans love fights, Torts is kinda famous for his A+ players and his doghouse players, simple as that.
For once, it is finally provable that the NHL is directly helping the Leafs - by shifting the responsibility of determining the accuracy of high sticking and puck over glass penalties to the teams, rather than having a centralized system available to all teams, the rich teams that can afford more support staff have a higher chance of getting those calls right rather than refereeing being equal for all teams regardless of market size.
The league is officially rigged in favor of the Leafs, enjoy the Stanley Cup

Don’t get me wrong. I agree they shouldn’t have spent so much on the core four but the only realistic option is sign 3 of them.
Tavares was signed first before anyone knew how good they were and he was a Free Agent who had a bidding war going. No revisionist history. You wanted him and rightly so. At the time he was a legit elite first line center.
Marner was a young winger who’s good at defense and was trending to a 90pt player.
Mathew’s was and is a perennial 50/60 goal guy.
So which one don’t you sign?
If it’s Tavares then the Leafs would have been roasted for not giving the young unproven Mathew’s, Marner, Nylander support and veteran leadership to win.
I think the team wasn’t good enough to win in the playoffs then and I don’t think they are good enough now. Unfortunately everyone has no trades but I think you need to trade Marner or Nylander. Unless you can move Tavares but then you are retaining and sending out your first as well. If he agrees to it.
@@HandsomeDanVacationRentals That's the thing, Tavares has never been an Elite Center since his junior years. Look at his career stats, he's a 60-70pt player who is supposed to be a primary goal scorer.
@@danieldosso2455 That's a little incorrect. His career PPG is 0.939 which, in an 82 game season, is roughly 77pts/season. He's actually done just as well as a Leaf point wise as he ever did with the Isles. That's not really the point though. At the time of signing he was being courted by several teams at least two of which were offering more money, albeit a small amount more.
I will admit the contract hasn't aged well, but almost no contract does, and fans and management knew at the time this one wouldn't either. Is he worth 11M right now? No. But your assertion that he should have/would have signed for 8M is just a pipe dream. There was no way. Here is an excerpt from an SI article by Michael McCann and Robert Raiola. It's free so I'm not stealing anything here but it sure sounds like he was an Elite Center. He wasn't Crosby but nobody else was at the time. I probably would have put him top 5 in 2018.

The Islanders offered him 8X11M reportedly. San Jose offered him reportedly 7X13M. He graciously took a hometown discount (11M-14M) to sign with the Leafs sure but expecting him to take an even bigger one (32M-35M by your 8M number) would be ludicrous and just frankly dumb.
I'm not a Leafs fan but Toronto definitely got value for that contract. Fun fact! in researching this answer I found reference to how the Leafs were one of the deepest teams at Center with Tavares, Mathews, and Kadri down the middle but would still need an elite blueliner to be a cup contender. Some things never change I guess. ;)

What does A COACH have to do with team building? Some input, but not much, and no responsibility. Look at Keefe's record; one of the best, if not the best in NHL HISTORY. And never with the best team in history.
How about instead of increasing the cap we reduce ticket costs?
Bertuzzi is exactly where he is supposed to be at the time of the freeze frame they were discussing on the 3rd goal, Adam clearly has never had a good coach in his entire life & somehow understands hockey less than his friend who has literally never played. I think it's partially a product of him feeling like he has to have a talking point and going out of his way to invent one.

he slashed Ryan Hollweg in the face after being hit into the boards, and one for stomping on Jarkko Ruutu’s leg. Those two incidents only came nine months apart and were the seventh and eighth suspensions of his NHL career.
That's not really relevant to the conversation that's being had though, The man had CTE as a result of his hockey career and he ended his own life. Saying he was a bad guy on ice isn't relevant.
