We live in a great time if photography is your thing. The choice of brands and models, plus the quality of today's gear is amazing. Especially if you factor in the depreciation of the money, this lens is literally ultra-cheap for the build quality and images it offers.
That is so true.
I own the original 70-180 and the quality is fantastic. I can't imagine how much better this lens can be. You are absolutely right. We are indeed living in the golden age of photography gear.
Great and extensive review. Thank you a lot for your work Dustin !
My pleasure!
Thanks for the review. I was waiting for this lens to come out. Looks like a winner.
My pleasure!
Very impressive performance across the board, thank you for the excellent review.
My pleasure!
Dustin! Thanks for the great review. Am looking forward with the hopes of using this telephoto lens during 2024! 😎😎
Nice Dustin great review very thorough.
Glad you liked it
Really nice in depth review! Thanks! I sold my Tamron 70-180 G1 three weeks ago as i saw rumors for this G2. Got a good price and really looking forward to getting the new G2!
That was well timed!
This is why sony FF is a compelling choice. Lens selection is ridiculously good for all budgets.
Absolutely right.
Also Nikon.
Thank you Dustin for this great review as usual. As a matter of fact I finally chose the original G1 version of this lens thanks to your review, and I haven't regretted my choice ever since, took it on numerous trips and it delivers the kind of pictures I was expecting. Now with the G2 version out I do believe that unless one really needs or wants the extra features of the G2, the first version still remains an excellent lens, but if I get a chance to sell it for a good deal the G2 version is a no-brainer again for sure! Keep up your good work!! 👍👍👍
That's a solid take in my opinion.
Hey Dustin! A great review, on what looks to be the lens I've been waiting for! Your YT reviews are by far the most thorough and cover details that are relative to real world use. One question: You seem to be the only big name photog influencer/reviewer to get hands on this lens. Have you noticed this? Thanks mate! 👍
Your reviews are absolutely fantastic, very in-depth and well balanced. I look forward to receiving the lens later today, woohoo!!:))
Enjoy!
Thanks Dustin, this is the review we needed. This lens is less $$ than the Sony F4. Looks like a winner that I will be buying.
We have so many great choices on Sony right now. It's almost absurd
Great! Already a review of this great lens! I own the former version, as well as many other Tamron zooms. And while the older version was technically very good, mine developed a rather massive dust problem I have never experienced with other Tamron lenses. I really hope they have fixed that issue by now.
It should be improved, but Tamron will do a free cleaning of your lens as a part of warranty service.
@@DustinAbbottTWI It is good to know Dustin. Thanks for the heads up. I never paid attention to my 70-180 but after reading about the dust problem, I did check and see a lot of dust behind the front element. I don't think if effects image quality but it is annoying to see.
I own a total of five Tamrons for my Sony FF system. My 150-500 was soft from day one. I sent it in and got it back yesterday. It is now sharp as all my other lenses. I own the original 70-180. It is my go to lens for landscape work. I shot a lot for a project that called for f2.8 and f4 images. I am blown away by the image quality. I can't imagine how much better the G2 version can be.
Now that I think about it, the two biggest dust specks that I ever saw in lenses were both in Tamron lenses: the SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD & the 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD.
First, big thank you for all your great reviews(both video and written ) Dustin, they’re truly the best ones on CZcams.
I’m here hoping to hear wether Tamron plans to offer this lens on FX mount, I don’t think I would be the only to be super exited to see this G2 version with X mount for my XH2. Any word?
I haven't heard anything yet, but I do think this lens would work on X-mount...though obviousl7 70mm on a 1.5x crop factor is not particularly wide. The focal range isn't as appealing on APS-C.
Great review! I owned the first gen 70-180 lens and it got a ton of dust inside of the lens. It didn’t affect my images but it bothered the hell out of me.
This one should be better in that regard. The build quality has definitely come up a bit.
It's what one has come to expect on tamron lenses - excellent optics & now digital customization with great value. I wonder how the older lens would perform on the new R5 which one can sometimes find used at less than half the price. Personally, I am tending towards the sony 70-200 f4 macro lens which because of its macro features makes its range very versatile + one can use the teleconverter. With better ibis + better iso performance I am leaning to slightly slower zoom lenses - particularly for longer focal lengths where one has more compression combined with better mfd. It is amazing the range & design of lenses that we have today. And the ability to access their features through reviews such as yours.
The older lens is still very strong optically.
Thanks Dustin Abbott, another great and informative review . Looks like a very nice lens. As you know Nikon Z-mount users have a Nikon-badged version also without some of the new buttons, but which can accept Nikon TCs. . Cheers and best to you my friend.
The TC issue is a Sony limitation, for sure.
@@DustinAbbottTWI yes that and the Sony limitation for 20fps and 30fps also. Sad, but that is Sony's business decision.
Always a fan of Tamron's approach to lens designing. Great optics, build, rendering, magnification and colors are often in the formula. Most of my lenses are tammies for that reason. Wish we could see this lens on canon but one can only dream!
I completely agree. This lens would be a serious disruptor on Canon RF.
@@DustinAbbottTWI "This lens would be a serious disruptor on Canon RF." Canon agrees.
So excited for the Tamron 35-150 f2 to f2.8, I wonder what the Gen. 2 improvement will be... 😅 I hope OIS will come with that too. Cool vid as always!
I wouldn't be surprised if it is a while before we see a G2 lens for the 35-150. It already has basically all the improvements we see here save VC.
Hehe that's good too. I just got my 35-150 about a month ago. I might feel a bit disappointed if they did release something new and great right about this time. 😅😅😅
Sigma 70-200 is also right at the corner, there is a great fun coming. Though I would still lean to GMII because there are already 11 dust in my 35-150. That really gives me PTSD over external zoom
Send it in to Tamron. They'll clean and redamp. Part of their warranty service!
That's good to know about Tamron warranty service!
I had dust in my 35-150 few mths after buying. Sent in and they cleaned it up FOC.
Great video as usual, always helpful in making actual buying decisions. I have a specific situation, how would you evaluate the autofocus compares to the 135 f1.8 samyang? (if you can recall) because this lens might be looking to replace that in my arsenal, but i would need it to have much better focus, especially in lower light.
This definitely focuses faster. Dual rather than single focus motor.
Hi Dustin, thank you for the review. I have the original 70-180. I find it to be at its sharpest at around 135. I shoot wide open a lot and corner sharpness is very important to me as my scenes need to be sharp corner to corner at f2.8 and f4. It is strange that your results show the lens to be at its weakest point at 139 but sharp at all other focal lengths. I am talking about extreme corners.
It's still extremely sharp (remember I'm testing on 60MP and showing results at 200%). You won't have any issues with sharpness.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you Dustin. I am also shooting with a 60MP camera (A7RIV) and it is taxing all my lenses.
Great review as usual. I'd love to see an angle of view analysis at min/max focal lengths. Do 70mm and 180mm on this lens mean the same thing as on other lenses? Would be good information.
According to Tamron the angle of view is 34°21'- 13°42'. The GM II lens is 34° to 12° 30', so the angle of view should be roughly what Tamron claims.
Great video, I picked up this lens today and you were a great help in my decision. What f stop would you say is the “sweet spot”?
Probably F4. It's very sharp wide open already, so F4 just gives you a bit of contrast boost.
Hey Dustin, excellent review as always. Im curious, does the improvement of the G2 change any conclusions you drew in the Tamron 35-150 vs 28-75+70-180 video? Speaking of 35-150, any update on where you are in line to get the Samyang version?
On the Samyang front, I've sent an email to my contact about a week ago, but haven't heard anything back. There could be a holiday that I'm not aware of, but at the moment I have hint of when I'll have a chance to look at the latest Samyang gear. I continue to love the 35-150mm, but certainly the two newest G2 versions of those lenses are improved in many, many ways. There really isn't a bad choice there, though I really love the focal range of the 35-150 as a one lens solution.
Quality content 👍
Thank you!
I went ahead and bought the 70-200 f/4 mk2 right after it came out. Had Tamron released this one earlier, I probably would've gotten it. Happy that the Sony is lighter, though. Perhaps I'll add this one to my kit at some point and then see if I want to keep both.
That's fair.
If they were the same price at launch, I might consider Sony. But for now, Tamron all the way.
Fair enough. I have no idea if the 70-200 delivers better image quality (probably not) but it is lighter and gives me that extra 20mm (not important on high megapixel bodies)@@frankfeng2701
@@DustinAbbottTWIwhich one would you recommend?
My original 28-75 is externally zooming and has some small dust particles inside just from the zooming action sucking dust in, but there's also a larger fiber that I imagine would show up at high aperture (hopefully not), when I first noticed it I was worried and I was inquiring about getting it cleaned by tamron but on email they suggested this is totally normal for all externally zooming lenses and while they could clean it for me it will just happen again.
I think there weather sealing is getting more and more robust, so I suspect you would see less of that with this lens.
I have the original for a year now and IQ wise I was never disappointed. But what I would love to know is if the new lens handles running dogs (especially towards the camera) better for my pet photography and if I can set a custom AF limiter to 1 to 5 or 7 meters (I wish my first gen had an AF limiter). The VC does nothing for me but I do appreciate the extra weather resistance (I shoot mainly outdoors). It's utterly disappointing that it doesn't work with TC because it is ultra compact and easy to carry 360mm f 5.6 would be a dream, but that's the greedy Sony way.
The new version should track a bit better. And yes, you can set a custom focus limiter in about five different positions
@@DustinAbbottTWI As in preset settings? Can you tell me what those presets look like please in metric values please?
Great review do u think u may review the samyang or rokinon 35 to 150 2 to 2.8 lens
I've been trying to get a review copy all year.
Would love to see this come to Z-Mount sooner, rather than later. Tamron's been on an absolute roll with their zoom lenses lately.
That seems likely, considering that there are already a few rebranded Tamron zooms on Z mount.
Nikon only released their rebranded T70180G1 like a couple months ago, it is highly unlikely they will make an update this soon, but eventually yes.
It would be great a comparison with the Z mount, since the lens is a small improvement of the g1
Unfortunately I don't do Nikon reviews, so someone else will have to pull that one off.
Was thinking to pick this up for my a6300 apsc lens since it will be an effective 105-270mm at f2.8 and also future proofing my gear if ever I’ll upgrade to FF .. still waiting for someone to do a review on this version and check sharpness of this lens on apsc and wont buy until its confirmed
This lens is plenty sharp; it will handle your a6300 just fine, as that camera is actually lower pixel density than the 61MP full frame camera I tested it on.
I suppose one plus of the rebranded Tamron 70-180 on Nikon Z is that it is compatible with the teleconverters and no limits on FPS on Nikon cameras, albeit for the G1 version and a Nikon markup in price..
That lens is in a very strange position now. As you say, it does have a few advantages, but also has a number of disadvantages relative to the new lens...and at a high price point.
Thank you for the review!
I have at the moment a Sony ZV-E1 but the eye-autofocus/subject tracking does not seem to work neither in video or photomode. No issues with 17-28 F2.8 Di III RXD on the same body. Is this something you have heard of e.g. if the camera is not supported or if there will be a firmware update to fix this.
Hmmm, this isn't something I've heard about previously. I would reach out to Tamron for clarification.
@@DustinAbbottTWI It's really weird it just started working. Not sure what happened switched forth and back then it "kicked" in...feels a little so and so to say the least :)
Sometimes the product SC feature kicks in accidentally by the touch screen display. When that's on, the eye tracking is off. I had this issue as well 😂
nice review, as always. Regarding autofocus with people and animal running towards you? It's equivalent to sony 70-200GM2/G2 macro? The previous version of tamron 70-180 (g1) wasan't so reliable in this sense.
I wouldn't say 100% as good as the Sony, but probably 95% as good.
Love the fact it is black. Seriously. I get the need for white paint on the big sports lenses, but there's no need for a white 70-200 other than a branding statement.. It's just too conspicuous. I spent many years shooting news, events, etc. for newspapers and private clients and when I'd have to take out a Canon EOS kit with the white 70-200 vs. a Nikon kit I'd more than just occasionally get comments from complete strangers like "That's a big lens" and "How far away can you see with that thing?" and my favorite "What TV station are you with?" You just don't want random people noticing your equipment that much unless...well, unless you want them to notice. Much prefer stealth black.
Fair enough.
It's funny because my wife hates when I bring my sony 200-600 to shoot because it sticks out like a sore thumb lol.
Great video as always. May i know what tripod you are using here?
Oben Tabletop Tripod shown in video: bhpho.to/3vL8YWy
They really need to add VC to the 35-150. Though I can't see that happening anytime soon.
Agreed. I don't see a new version of that lens coming for another couple of years. They are just starting to meet the demand for the existing one.
I loved the original but the zoom barrel kept breaking I hope this version improves the barrel
That's the first I've heard of that. I owned the first gen lens for a few years until the 35-150mm came out and had zero issues with it.
Lovely video, thank you. Another really nice-looking lens. Sony FE is really spoiled for choice at the long end these days: the new 70-200mm f2.8 GM II; the Tamron 35-150mm; then there is this lens; and then also some really nice primes like: the Sigma 105mm f2.8, Sony 90mm G f2.8 and Sony 135mm GM. I wish I could own them all. Unfortunately, my budget only allows me to own one modern lens at a time. At the moment I have the Sigma 105mm. But I would love to try them all out at some point, especially the more expensive ones. Tja, keep dreaming ^^
It's so true. I don't know that any group of photographers have ever been as spoiled for choice as those with Sony E-mount right now.
I can fully recommend this tripod, I bought it after seeing it here on this channel. 7:59
There must be a few people that have bought them, as I've been asked about them dozens of times.
That's some kickass GM like bokeh.. well done Tamron. Amazing offer.
For sure.
Nice I have the 35-150 it’s ok
I love the 35-150mm. It's the only reason I'm not jumping on this lens myself.
I am curious if it is the same as the Nikkor 70-180 or this is even newer design and how this fares with the Tamron 35-150 f2/2.8 autofocus wise, as someone mentioned for shooting running dogs
It is not the same because the Nikon version doesn't have image stabilization. Much like the 28-75, it is the first version of the 70-180.
@@RiposteThis oh, yeees, I heard it and I forgot about it, thank you🙂
@Riposte is correct
Dustin, I’m curious as to how you would compare this lens to the new Sony 70-200 f4 macro. Which would you recommend if you had to choose one?
That would really depend on how much you personally felt you needed F2.8. The new Sony F4G is superb, and in some ways it still feels more premium than the Tamron, but the Tamron also has some advantages.
Thanks Dustin. I need a lens for travel and general photography (family and such). I am not an event photographer, but I already have the 24-70 f2.8 GM II and the Sigma 85 1.4 so my lowlight needs are covered. Based on your reviews, I'm inclined to go with the new Sony f4 over the Tammy 2.8.@@DustinAbbottTWI
@@matthewbeizer7241 I'm in the same boat and I'm leaning towards the sony since my wife would love the macro aspect of it (with 2x teleconverter). I'm holding off on any decision for a few weeks to see what Sigma drops the first week of October for their 70-200
I need this Lens 👏🤩
It's a very nice one.
Fantastic lens, and an incredible value.
If this comes out to replace their Nikon Z mount 70-180mm ('G1'), then my (longer term) Z GAS will strengthen.
Nikon literally just released their 70-180, it wont be replacing it, the G2 is for Sony, Nikon is getting all Tamron's older G1 stuff.
It probably will be a while before the Z version comes.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I just (re)realised that the 'G1' is sold as a "Nikon" lens, too. So, yeah... probably the G2 will not make an appearance any time soon. Shame. I like the looks and build quality of the Tamron 'G2 types' a lot. I have a few on F mount.
I really wish they make a dedicated apsc lens version of this, to make it even cheaper and smaller😅
Agreed. Something like that would be huge on every platform I can think of.
Does the lens have issues with staying locked on when being zoomed? The previous version as well as every Tamron lens I've tested completely lose focus when zooming, while the the GMs stay on target. Feels almost like the af motors are disengaged during the zoom action. I don't see any reviewer talk about this, and I don't know why.
I actually just did some action tests while testing the Sony a7C2, and it's definitely improved. I'm not sure it is GM equivalent, as I don't do a lot of zooming during bursts, but it is definitely stronger.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I don't even mean zooming during bursts. To reproduce the issue: Set af to af-c and tracking. Lock onto a subject. Keep holding af-on, then zoom. When you do this on a GM, the focus stays locked on target. When you do it on any Tamron lens I've tested, things go out of focus and the system needs to find the subject again.
How does this 70-180mm G2 compare to the Tamron 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8 at the 70-150mm shared focal range?
Both lenses are extremely sharp, so I wouldn't be concerned about that end of things. Choose the lens that best suits your needs.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you Dustin Abbott? Did you notice any difference in AF performance?
Dustin, would you buy this or the new Sony 70-200 G Macro f4? And why?
My use case is some school events for my son (quite rare) and then travel.
That's a tough question. The good news is that both lenses are exceptional. I would go with the Tamron if you need the low light performance, but with the Sony if you don't. The Sony gives you the option of adding TCs, which the Tamron won't. I would probably prefer the Tamron as a portrait photographer, but would choose the Sony as a general purpose jack of all trades.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks as always for replying. I’d be using it more for general plus some candid portraits at school events. Is the f4 still good enough for that? I’d assume so! Sounds like you’d go for the Sony in my case? They are about the same price
What tripod are you using in the video?
Oben Tabletop Tripod shown in video: bhpho.to/3vL8YWy
Nice Video, useful information. A shame 3rd Party Lens do not always get the recognition they deserve from Main Stream Manufacturers in respect to full camera function access. Keep well & stay safe 👍🇬🇧
That's true. Some photographers/reviewers are a little snobbish about third parties.
I just got mine paired with a 6700. Question, lens has a hum and sorta jump when focusing. That normal .
See if it still does the "jump" if you turn the VC off. That sounds more like VC than AF.
That makes sense. I'll give it a whirl
Just wish there's some kind of tripod collar option for this lens
There may eventually be a third party solution, but the lens isn't really designed around it.
Is this a good choice to pair with Sony ac7 ii?
Sure. It's the smallest and lightest lens of its kind, so a better balance even if it is still a big lens for that body.
would you pick this lens or the Sony FE 70-200 F4 II Macro? The price point is quite similar
I've kicked the tires on this mental exercise quite a few times. I personally would probably lean towards the Sony for its macro versatility and the ability to throw a TC on there, but I've also got a lot of lenses that give me a fast maximum aperture in that range. I think it really comes down to what other lenses you have and which lens is going to give you more versatility.
@@DustinAbbottTWI i have finally decided to go for the Sony for it's macro ability
@@DustinAbbottTWI Given you didn't have other lenses in the range and was deciding between the two as a travel option would you still take the Sony G?
Currently have a A7iv + 24GM + Samyang 75(But looking to sell this and grab a zoom for more reach)
@@jonathanz9889 I have the original 70-180 and thinking of switching to the new G2 for the added features. For my Sony A7RIV, I use all Tamron zooms (17-28, 28-75G2, 70-180, 50-400, and 150-500 which is up for sale). I am more than satisfied with quality of the images I get. They are perhaps a notch below Sony GM but the cost difference is massive. Cost/benefit ratio favors Tamron lenses. BTW, I do mostly landscapes with occasional portrait work.
Even if I weren't into photography, I'd still come here for the cats 🙂
LOL - thanks!
Isn't "all that detail" more a function of the 50MP of your A1?
Yes, to some degree, but trust me, it doesn't look like that with a weak lens!
Nooooo, Dustin.... Don't give me hope...
Based on various reviews, opinions etc. I decided to go with v1 of this lens last year. The biggest selling point was the price difference compared to Sony 70-200mm GM. I was able to live without stabilization, with slower focusing and I thought that 20mm shorter focal length won't matter all that much. How little did I know...
1) Why do we buy a 70-200m lenses? To be able to reach beyond the standard zoom lens range. So from my experience, yes that 20mm shorter focal does matter and I wish I had full 200mm at my disposal.
2) I don't know, maybe it's just my copy of the lens, but from 150mm to 180mm I get A LOT of chromatic aberration and REALLY soft mid to far sides of the frame at f2.8, to the point that anything in that range becomes unusable. Increasing the aperture only helps a small bit... So the already shorter 70-180mm becomes 70-150mm... Again, maybe it's only my copy, but how I can prove that it performs worse than what I expected???
3) The focusing. At certain aperture values, the focusing motor starts "chirping" and becomes audible in videos.
This G2 looks VERY promising, but the softness at 140mm makes my "spidey sense" tingling... Currently Sony Poland has a special offer for various products, where you can get 70-200mm GM II for about 2500euro (depending on the currency exchange rates), compared to the usual price of 3000euro. 2500euro is still much more than G2, but I simply lost my trust with Tamron...
I would send your lens to Tamron for evaluation. They typically include a good warranty, and there might be something causing that problem. Also, there is no "softness" at 140mm in my tests - it's just not as exceptionally good as some other focal lengths. It's still sharper than most lenses.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you for your reply! At this stage I'd rather sell my G1 and go for the G2 or save for GM II.
Yes, maybe "softness" is not the best word. Would you settle with "inconsistent sharpness performance" ;) ?
Oh, and THANK YOU for another great video! The Best photo reviewer on CZcams!
Isn't it also lighter? especially comparing with 70-200 f2.8 mark 1. There is whole bunch of photographers that have to travel and extra 700g of the lens are not that appreciated, especially when back starts to ache.
A whole lot lighter compacted to the MK 1 lens you mention, though as this is a G2 lens I compared it more to the lens it is replacing.
Although the new Tamron is a little better than the previous one, after watching Stefan Malloch's review, I realized that I don't even need Tamron for nothing. It's definitely worth taking the Sony 70-200 f 2.8 GM-II, it's worth the money.
I'll rather use the Tamron because of the weight and size. I'm not a pixel peeper. My clients want results and I want less weight on my shoulders
I'm assuming there's some negative he found, but you'll have to be more specific.
He was very complimentary of the new Tamron, but I saw a huge difference in color and contrast between the Sony 70-200 f 2.8 GM, and three other lenses compared to each other, like the Sony 70-200 f 4 G and two Tamrons, which were very close to each other friend in image quality.
@@albertzhager7852 He explained himself quite a lot in comments that this difference was caused by different lighting of the test chart.
His tests were done at different times of the day. He himself said that in reality contrast and sharpness is much closer than it looks.
I have a genuine question. Why does no third party lens manufacturer make their lenses white? Canon and Sony make their 70-200 and other expensive ones in that color due to heat dispersion and other reasons. But why don't Sigma or Tamron? Won't they be protected from heat too?
Frankly I think the "white for heat dissipation" argument is really oversold. Nikon had no whites, and I've never heard of any of their teles melting down! I think it is an aesthetic choice more than anything.
@@DustinAbbottTWI thank you! Always felt the same too
@@DustinAbbottTWI Probably true in most cases. However, I sometimes do remote shooting where the camera stays on the tripod, and I use a CamRanger (wifi) to monitor the viewfinder at a distance. With the camera and lens in the sun and the screen live continuously, there is a tendency for the camera to overheat and shutdown. This is without even taking video or pictures. The solution I've just tried involves small solar umbrella's!!!
It seems reasonable to swap the 70-200 f4 Sony to this one!
If you are talking about the first generation Sony, then I completely agree. The second gen lens is pretty special.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Yes that one!
shame the nikon z 75180 is the G1 version
It is true...the timing is kind of terrible.
it hasn't been released yet but already has dust inside)
????
???? I did not notice, give us time and location, please!
@@marcinmrzyglocki 3:44 but this is more of a sarcastic joke from the owner of the first model, who used it at most 20 times and already collected a sufficient amount of dust inside
@@alexkinyapin granted that I'm shooting mostly indoors, even if for a long time like 12 hours with little breaks, but did not notice anything serious - I was alarmed once or twice, but that was temporary.
I used the G1 version for several years and didn't notice dust inside.
These Tamron lenses are being updated with the frequency of iPhones lol
Pretty much.
Can’t wait for g3
Would buy this in a heartbeat for Canon RF mount. Too bad Canon has it's head up it's own ass... been thinking of ditching Canon going Olympus, tired of all the weight I need to carry.
There's no question that Canon's RF mount policy to date has been extremely frustrating. This lens would be fabulous to have on RF.
You showed the new features of stability only 2sec…
Not quite sure how you can say that when I show at least half a dozen handheld video clips throughout the review.
Dustin Jazz toled me you are 80 yeers old. That is crazey I hope I age as Grace-fuly as you ! You look amazeing for such an eldirly age of 80 you look yunger.
