    The only area I will concede Light as being smarter is verbal manipulation. He knows what to say to either get people to do what he wants or have them join his side. Lelouch made a horrible appeal to Suzaku and Kallen on Kamine Island when his identity was revealed, basically saying _"Sure I'm evil but help me and I'll help you"._ Light knows speaking so candidly would have gotten him killed so never did.

    • @MyMediaChops
      @MyMediaChops  Před 2 lety +42

      Verbal manipulation would fall under interpersonal intelligence which makes sense as Light is able to understand people more than Lelouch can

    • @wdcain1
      @wdcain1 Před 2 lety +63

      @@MyMediaChops Lelouch really is too honest to a fault which is ironic considering how often he's called a liar. Take when he tried to recruit Suzaku to the Black Knights on Kamine Island. Lelouch tries logic but had no recourse but Geass when that failed to save himself.
      Now Light would have played Suzaku like a fiddle. I imagine he would have concocted some insidious situation where he would arrange things for Suzaku to get expelled from the military and the only way to save lives is to join the Black Knights. It's deceitful but that's how Light rolls.
      This talk of Light v. Lelouch gets me because when you think about it, Light Yagami has way more in common with Schneizel: Megalomaniac, manipulative, charismatic, power hungry, and absolute arrogance.

    • @BroadwayRonMexico
      @BroadwayRonMexico Před 2 lety +30

      The big edge Light had in that department is that he's actually a sociopath while Lelouch just plays the part of one. Light is cold and detached from others so he doesn't have any issues viewing people from a purely logical position most of the time (unless they start to anger or threaten him enough). Lelouch's own feelings towards others sometimes conflict with his plans and any possibility of approaching people in a manner like Light does
      That said, when Light gets cocky and arrogant, or feels threatened, he makes more mistakes in judgement and dealing with others than Lelouch does

    • @wdcain1
      @wdcain1 Před 2 lety +15

      @@BroadwayRonMexico Accurate. One of Lelouch's biggest mistakes was letting Viletta live after she saw his face in the second episode. Light wouldn't have done that. If Lelouch had killed her then and there, R1 and R2 would have turned much more favorably for him.

    • @BroadwayRonMexico
      @BroadwayRonMexico Před 2 lety +3

      @@wdcain1 I was also referring to things in regards to the example you mentioned originally. Lelouch made a rather poor emotional appeal since it was largely based on his own emotions in regards to Suzaku and Kallen. His appeal was more an outpouring of his own feelings, not a matter of "what do they want to hear and what will they react to?". That question is how Light views interactions with people (and unless his anger, paranoia, or bruised pride gets the better of him, is something he rarely has issues with) and it's how Lelouch *tries to* but often cant bring himself to do (since unlike Light, he *does* care for many of the people around him)

    Light died because he was cornered and gunned down like an animal. Lelouch died because that was part of the plan. Light lost, Lelouch didn't. Lelouch managed to conquer the entire world starting from nothing.
    What's interesting to note about your take on Lelouch vs. Light is that, while Light may be the one that demonstrates greater interpersonal intelligence, ultimately Lelouch is the one that cares about other people more. My take on the two has always been that Lelouch seems more human, because it genuinely grieved him when the people around him were harmed by his actions, while Light seemed to only view the people around him as tools to be used and disposed of. Lelouch knew and understood that his actions were evil, while Light considered himself to not only be above, but the arbiter of such concepts.

Revenge against the Britannian royal family and finding out the truth behind Marianne's death were both goals for Lelouch, but ultimately they were secondary to his goal of helping Nunnaly. Light lost because of his fatal flaw. He had ultimate power and nobody would've knew, but he killed Lind L Taylor. I respectfully disagree if you are evaluating them based on their intellects.
      For the whole Lind L. Taylor thing: Light simply believed he was better than everyone and wrote the name because of that. He didn’t expect L to be on or above his level. This isn’t to excuse his blunder, but instead to explain why he did it.
      Also.. As stated above, the ending was poorly done. There’s a video on how it’s not possible for Near to perfectly replicate a Death Note in such a timeframe.. However it’s the source material nonetheless.. I’m just nitpicking.
      Now as for Lelouch: While yes his intelligence is very impressive, he had a fatal flaw that cost him the game, his emotions. He lost in season 1 because of it but Charles decided to keep him alive and do whatever just because. Not only that, but he had to be saved from Cornelia by CC during there encounter.
      Overall they are both on the same tier, I don’t know who’s overall more intelligent.

Also I may be wrong but last time I checked the death note authors said Lights iq is 180 at the most while Code geass said Lelouch’s iq is 210 and last time I checked 210 > 180

      Sequel movie isn’t canon, also where is it stated that Light’s IQ is 180? Also Light’s intellectual feats such as the the potato chip scene, the Naomi Misora scene, the Raye Penber scene & also his relinquishing the death note scene with Rem & Ryuk is showed higher intelligence than any Lelouch feat. Judging characters based on their intellectual feats is a much more accurate than using (non-confirmed) IQ stat numbers. Also Geass is a lot easier to use and more efficient than the DN, also Lelouch has been saved by the plot more times than Light, at least when Light got L killed he manipulated to Rem into doing so because she knew she’d do anything to protect Misa which also shows he’s a better fast thinker and manipulator than Lelouch.

      that's not a feat. if you give light the geass. he would've easily did that. put light in lelouchs shoes, and put lelouch in lights shoes. light would get way farther. death notes intelligence is realistic. code geass sometimes makes lelouch smart because the plot demands it. like when he made a pre recording to talk to schnitzel. thats plot armor and there's no real logica way for someone to do that. he just did it because he's "smart." by that logic other anime characters are smarter just because the plot demands it. death note is real intelligence that actually breaks things down. they don't just do it, they SHOW. the REAL intelligent feats in death note far surpasses code geass.

Lelouch was able to outsmart someone who can read his thoughts and someone who can see the future. Yes it’s more efficient but the opponents Lelouch is dealing with also have a geass while Light is being defeated by people who don’t have a death note and are allied with people who have a death note and the shinigami eyes. They also don’t have death gods that they can manipulate to get rid of people. Light clearly had the advantage over everyone yet still lost to a 10 year old who didn’t even understand the stakes. About Environmental Intelligence and both characters:
    As far as I remember from when I studied it, this intelligence is about understanding the world as a hole.
    A few examples:
    - Darwin paid deep attention to living beings and came up with an entire theory for how they behave and why
    - An architect, when planning a proper chimney for a new house should understand the terrain and the winds in that place.
    - Gravity Theory is essentially a very deep understanding of 'things fall'.
    We see a freaking lot of smart environmental thinking on Lelouch's part. And some pretty epic examples at that:
    - The bubble bomb on the bottom of the ocean
    - Causing a landslide to beat Cornelia
    - Imploding a fucking building and using it as bridge
    Actually Lelouch's worst enemy is exactly a person who can defy physics with his supernatural speed and reflexes.
    Now I can't remember of any big examples from Light Yagami. Nothing like 'they wind will turn and something will happen' or anything like that. It's always about people, manipulation and the death note's rules

    Light Yagami:- A 17-year-old brilliant young man with strong sense of justice later became opportunistic sociopath, obviously very cunning, excellent at lying and manipulating, cold, calculative ruthless and wannabe God.
    Lelouch Lamperouge:- A prodigy turned rebel. Lelouch has shown to be capable of love and humanity, he uses his extremely heightened intelligence and analytical capabilities to make world a better place not only for his sister but for everyone.
    Conclusion:- Light is colder and scarier than Lelouch on the other hand Lelouch is emotionally less stable but possesses greater intelligence and wisdom.

Of course that's just my opinion. Lelouch was able to convince millions of people that the black knights were exactly what he said they were, manipulate Rolo-an assassin from a young age indoctrinated to only care about his mission- to change sides and came up with a plan that would force Rolo into betraying Britannia and save Lelouch at the same time, this all the whole Rolo suspected or knew who and what Lelouch was and could do. He was able to understand and predict Schneizal's plan after he got a better feel for him after 8 years apart. I think the issue is less him not knowing, and more about his emotions getting in the way or in the case of some of the things with the black knights, simply not caring enough.

    The biggest reason I find comparing light & Lelouch's Intelligence Is that lelouch Is made too be a beacon of hope while Light Is the exact opposite
    because Lelouch Is seen as a Tyrant but Is only playing the role while Light actually Is & Lelouch's biggest mistake Is his emotions but that because It has a larger range of character & people Lelouch actually deeply cares about
    while Light only has a couple people he cares about either because they have a similar mindset or goal or because there on his bad side like L so the comparison of Intelligence Isn't exactly Intelligence but a way of Social Indifference making them less like-able as a character
    because they're not actually the same as each-other because Light wanted to actually rule over people & make a Crazy Dystopia of a Utopia which Lelouch only wanted to make a Utopia out of a Dystopia for his dear sister which he cares for & the biggest mistakes he made was underestimating the power of other's which wasn't his fault for how large scale he was going
    while Light was Indoor's or out on a short chase running from the police Lelouch was on a War expedition Guiding battle either on or off the Frontlines controlling his forces the other fault was when the treaty happened & he made mass genocide even If It sort of worked better In his favor to progress his plan's that were going to take years In the works because of what his sister Euphemia
    which she didn't know what she was getting Into making the plan his biggest mistake was causing genocide from his geass which was unintentionally made as a real Incident but It's a mistake many probably would do If they didn't know there geass could stay active without they're choosing other than that

    Alright, I've watched the whole thing now and actually have all the context needed to give you informed feedback.
    1. I still find the whole discussion kinda meaningless, to be honest. It's just too much comparison of apples to oranges for me, because the intent behind each story and each character is so different. That being said, you mitigate that concern quite a bit by looking at the comparison through the lens of multiple types of intelligence. It makes the discussion much more relevant and helps address the disparate purposes behind the stories themselves. So frankly, that was a rather inspired decision on your part when wading into a topic that usually devolves into arguments about who would score higher on an IQ test.
    2. Again, while I personally still find that having this discussion generally minimizes the more important point of the role the characters are meant to fill in their respective stories, talking with you yesterday at least opened my eyes a bit as to WHY people might enjoy comparisons like this. If someone is the type of person who enjoys long, passionate debates on things such as: "Who would win in a fight between Luke Skywalker and Master Chief?", then I can see why they might also find topics like this a fun and harmless way to engage in intellectual exercise.
    3. Your delving into the types of intelligence was the most interesting part for me, and I can see why you say comparisons like this often help you learn and grow in ways that you might never have thought to do so otherwise. I certainly would never have thought to pick up a book on intelligence on any old random day, but this type of analysis can certainly force you to learn new and surprisingly interesting things.
    4. Indeed, Naomi is my pick for best girl in Death Note.
    5. You oversimplify Lelouch's motivations when talking about them in the section about the Zero Requiem. While making a "gentler world" for Nunnaly is certainly one of his primary motivations, it is only one of many, and some of the other motivations are not noble in the slightest. At its core, Lelouch's character arc is about Jung's concept of "The Integration of Man with his Shadow." If you'd like to hear more of my thoughts on Lelouch's character arc, check out my video "The Role of Romance in Code Geass." I won't go on about that anymore here though, because it's quite outside this video's topic.
    5. Final thoughts: Still not my cup of tea, but well presented and very well reasoned. This is easily the most interesting take on the subject I've ever seen, because you DO acknowledge the absurdity of comparing stories and characters that are not similar in the slightest on the foundational level, and use that to inform how you approach the subject. I found that interesting. No comparisons of the window dressing that makes these stories LOOK similar on the surface, like typical comparisons I see. You factor in the fundamental differences in the respective narratives and the discussion is much the better for it.
    Well done, sir. Apologies again for making a snap judgement yesterday off of 30 seconds. Keep on keeping on.

    There are some inherent problems a person may run into if they go from one series to another. I having watched and loved both series will frame that as best I can. Firstly, Lelouch and Light are not the same type of person or character. Light Yagami is a villain, arguably an anti-villain who has a noble enough ideal, but he's ultimately a villain who seeks out his goal for just himself and his own ego. He has a god complex, and is willing to kill anyone who gets in his way, even his own family if necessary. Lelouch however is a bit different, Lelouch is an anti-hero, his goal is not for his own benefit but rather the benefit of his sister and everyone he cares for. And because there are times when those he cares about are against him, it means he has to make tough decisions, or work around it. He ultimately wouldn't want to hurt any of the people he cares about, but unfortunately sometimes he does. And while he sometimes thinks he should get rid of certain people due to the risk they pose to him, he almost never acts on those thoughts, he's always figuring out how he can keep them from harm, while avoiding being caught.
    As for their intelligence, they both made mistakes, some of those mistakes the other person wouldn't have made. But how things ultimately would play out would be very different with very different end goals. The mistakes of Light might not cause him to lose people he'd consider important until right at the end, but that's because everything he's concerned for is himself and his idea of justice. His goal and his life are the only things he doesn't consider acceptable losses. By contrast Lelouch has far more to lose, but in the end while he did lose some of the people he cared for, he did succeed in his ultimate goal. Lelouch's mistakes cost more lives because the scale is far larger, that said the exact reasons for making those mistakes are at times more understandable. There was less times I felt like the show bothered me, whereas in Death Note it felt like the show had basically tried to railroad the story to it's conclusion faster after L's death. But regardless, when one of them actually succeeded in his goal, while the other failed, and both being similar in intelligence but with different circumstances, it makes comparing the two hard, that said I do agree that Lelouch would be slightly smarter. I just feel like some of the things Light did fell a bit too short and it ultimately ended in his lose, whereas Lelouch won.

    Light is by far the smoother speaker of the two, but other than that, I think Lelouch has the upper hand. In comparision, when Light tricks others, he doesn't really have much else around to think about than being convincing. Lelouch on the other hand has a much larger operation to take care of and a much bigger cast of enemies and friends he doesn't have much time getting to know and reading, and somehow he still manages. But in the end, intelligence can't be measured.

    In terms of intelligence and mental skills they are comparable, but if the question is who would win, it's obviously Lelouch, cause he has qualities other then intelligence. Light fears death and avoids physical violence. He dies fleeing in panic and denial, refuses an easy win with shinigami eyes in the beginning, cause he doesn't want to shorten his life. Lelough is simply much more serious. He covers his face anyway, acts like a soldier, doesn't mind shooting and dying, or damaging his image, or admitting defeat and finally dies smiling, according to his own plan. He wouldn't bother with full evidence and pride of winning like L did, he'd just shoot light without full evidence, or shoot L without full plausible deniability, killed the taskforce and left, if he was kira. He also wouldn't mind shortening his lifespan for something he believes in. He simply takes his mission seriously while light wants power but fears "embarking on the path of blood" whenever it involves more then writing in his notebook.

    'smart' comes in many different flavours: general inteligence aka book smarts, specific inteligence such as a specific topic physics, math etc, street smarts, tactics etc
    imo light has higher general inteligence and specific inteligence related to the sciences however he lacks in tactics, forsight and street smarts
    lelouch is the oposite he has high general inteligence but not to the same degree as light and he lacks in specific inteligence like sciences but he excells at street smarts, reading people and tactics aswell as forsight
    as an example:
    light made several mistakes and most had to do with him failing to read people and proved a lack of forsight, he failed to predict how teru mikami would act, he also overestimated how many people where investigated by the fbi when he took care of the agents, lelouch on the other hand did make a similiar mistake by failing to predict cornelias actions when she first showed up, however he never made that mistake again and wether or not he did it deliberately or not he did set himself up in such a way that failing to predict people wouldnt be a huge issue, he inspired an unending loyalty in rolo which would be enough to get out of almost any situation

    Lelouch feels like a fictional character someone like James bond like a perfect protagonist who never loses, but light is more grounded to reality like he makes mistakes and things doesn't always goes according to his plan and between all of this he calculates his moves which makes him more relatable I'm not gonna say who is smarter but, remember lelouch realized about the power that he can use his powers only once on someone after three days but light already started experimenting with death note on first day like what more ways could he use death note, it doesn't say who is smarter.

      lelouch isn't a perfect protagonist in the slightest, there have been several moments where lelouch broke down after having to see his little sister, making a bunch of mistakes due to him not being able to control his emotions and feelings which honestly is more humane than anything. lelouch's plans dont always go as he planned either, there have been several changes in his plans due to unpredictable variables that showed up while the plan was being carried out, lelouch is literally a chess god in the show, calculated moves is one of the best qualities lelouch has. and lelouch never "realized" he can only use his power once, he literally tested it out to see the limits of his powers and what was possible with them as shown in an episode where he tests out geass on several students at ashford, not to mention as soon as lelouch got this power he killed a viceroy and a prince of a britannia and wiped out an entire battalion with very limited resources.

    They are around the same level. While Lelouch had more success by the end, one can argue that Geass is a far more powerful tool than a notebook. That said, Light’s arrogance was his downfall, he saw himself as a god; Lelouch, while hammy, understood that he was a mortal with a godly power, and so understood his shortcomings and sought to empower the ordinary man.

    The issue is Light's ego and god complex. That was his downfall. If he truly wanted to accomplish his goal. All he had to do was continue writing names down and never challenge L. But he wanted a challenge because he was bored. It was self sabotage.
    Lelouch on the other hand, steeled his will after killing Shirly's father and questioning his entire plan. He knew he had to embark down "the path of blood". He didnt care about being challenged, it was only an added benefit of his circumstance and goals.

There's basically a blink-and-you-miss-it shot of the wall with only half a tally mark. So honestly, I wonder what happens like a year after the Zero Requiem.
    Edit: Not sure I agree Light didn't know what he wanted. Especially if we consider FilmTheory proving Light/Kira WAS successful. He reduced crime a lot. (His goal was basically to eliminate it, wasn't it?) The problem is that Light had a god complex and that's why he was so upset when he made a mistake and got killed. He thought he'd basically always be the smartest and be able to keep on killing criminals once he beat L.

    I watched Death Note and Code Geass nearly simultaneously on Adult Swim when I was 13 and 14. While I enjoyed both, Code Geass stuck with me far longer and I've rewatched numerous times. Death Note, outside of the first dozen episodes or so, falls off hard imo, and I've never managed a full rewatch.
    Not in the way, that say Elfen Lied has prevented me from coming back, which actually hit me so hard and is so sad I haven't been able to bring myself back to it, but through shear lack of interest. Elfen Lied haunts me, Code Geass draws me in, but Death Note just gets boring after a bit. I always remember it as being one of my favorite animes ever but on attempted rewatches, I dont get that feeling anymore.. I've tried several times and Light and Misa just annoy the piss out of me now. L is worth the rewatch but SPOILERS, he dies and the show should have ended then and there.
    Code Geass on the other hand, I've rewatched several times and I'm glad I found this video to prep me for another. Probably my favorite anime ever and the manga, while vastly different considering the lack of Nightmare Frames, is up there too.
    As for the base argument, as to who is "smarter," I find it interesting that Light initially wins but loses in the end, whereas Lelouch loses but ultimately wins. I think the outcome of each series speaks for themselves as far as whos intellectually superior.

    I mean, I've always held the view that this discussion is meaningless. They are unique characters set in separate stories with different purposes. They aren't even the same TYPE of character or meant to fulfill even remotely similar roles. Hell, they're narratives are wildly different archetypal stories that have very different goals. But people tend to get really hung up on the intelligence trait.
    I've made two videos about this in the past: one about how Code Geass and Death Note are different from a narrative perspective, and one about how Lelouch and Light are completely different archetypes with separate purposes in their stories. Links below if you're interested:

      I addressed the key differences between the series in the video during the intro.
      It annoys me when people act as if they are remotely similar.
      This occured do the timing of the series and superficial similarities.
      That being said I don't consider comparing characters a pointless exercise even if the series are different.
      By making this video I gained a greater understanding of both series.
      It helped me appreciate both characters on a deeper level.
      For this topic I learned more about intelligence and means to measure it.
      It's enjoyable to compare the plans and feats of both characters.
      And top of that doing this types of comparisons are great for discussing different approaches to writing.
      Recently I compared Lelouch to Thorfinn.
      Another example of two different series and characters but yet so much to discuss.

    Light has stronger mathematical, kinesthetic, emotional, spacial and memory based intelligence compared to Lelouch. Light is shown to solve math problems and convincingly act while understanding the position of the cameras and writing names from his memory while doing it. His predictions of motives and manipulations under pressure show very high levels of intelligence. He combines almost all types at once.
