- An Apple employee has recently made a comment on the lack of Memory on MacBook Pro, he said in an interview that "8GB RAM on M3 MacBook Pro is Analogous to 16GB on PCs". Yet he failed to mention the fact that it is easy for apple to make 16GB MacBook Pros because it costs Apple only 34$ to produce, in this video I show you different results that prove that MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM is not in fact faster than having the same 16GB MacBook Pro, let alone compare it to the power of PCs. With how much Apple charges you for an extra 8GB RAM upgrade, you can buy 32GB RAM sticks on PC and Windows Laptops.

Unified memory basically means it's their proprietary bullshit designed specifically to rip off apple fans
Exactly lmao, the fact that they're selling 8GB RAM isn't the problem, but the BASE CONFIG for a MacBook **Pro** is 8GB of RAM for the entire system (CPU/GPU/whatever else) is HIDEOUS!
The $200 for each 8GB is insulting
$200 for every 4GB
BUT IT JUST WORKS
Even if your 8GB really is equivalent to 16GB it’s still not the reason you’re selling 16gig of RAM for 200bucks Mr.Cook😅
And your 8gig is not
Meanwhile on PC I can get a 32GB DDR5 kit for less than $100 smh
I added an 8GB stick to a PC recently for $25. Outrageous!
Apple would piss on their customers and say it's rain, and they'd believe it.
Yes, just like 99,9% of the population when its the government or any other big company pissing on on them.
Thats a great way to put it, they are sheep in a cult throwing money to their masters.
They already do xD

The 999 stand.
For $400 I put 128 GB of RAM into a PC. And it's DDR5 6000MHz. And I even thought that was too much money.
And i thought that was too much memory 🥹

Edit: a month later and I'm still getting comments saying "MACS USE USB-C THOUGH" but like- I know, and I'm talking about phones, not Macs.
they are stuck in their eco and apple is going to milk them
College girls who aren't tech savvy whatsoever still demand a $2000 MacBook pro for them to use exclusively for web browsing and Microsoft Word. That alone sells thousands of macs per year
I knew lots of people who owned $1300 iPhones. They were women who volunteered at a cat rescue, and their heaviest computer task was video calling their kids. Definitely need a new $1300 phone every single year for that.
If 8GB is faster than 16GB imagine how fast 4GB would be!
4gb would be ULTRA FAST 0-100% AND -1000000% efficiency 😂😂😂
👍😅💯
It is possible for 8GB to be 'faster' than 16GB. The 'speed' is based on the bandwidth and response time.
However stuffing 16GB of data into 8GB of RAM causes swapping to the SSD. Which is why an 8GB Mac churns its SSD to death and runs slower.
Sometimes 16GB has twice the bandwidth, sometimes it's the same (double sized chips).
I can tell you that under Windows, if you run Microsoft Teams with 4gb, you're not running anything else concurrently.
If there's anything to Apple's claim here for typical office use cases, I'd guess the threshold for MacOS would be like 3gb.
@@armamentarmedarm1699 With the new Teams, it should not be that big of an issue, as they moved on from Electron to WebView2, based on the Edge's version of Chromium, and they moved non-UI code on a separate process which I think it's made with something else
I had a family member get the 8GB iMac because they trusted the whole "unified memory" marketing. They found it utterly unusable.
They deserve it...
The copium is strong on this one
If you are prone to believe that unified memory gives you any benefit, you're literally asking to be scammed.
It does... in consoles, that have ten times as fast vram.
The problem is Apple fans are not that tech-savvy and believe whatever they are told to believe.
I got the 8GB M1 MBP too, with just my coding IDE, the database server and a few browser tabs opened, it's already hitting the bottleneck. Most Apple fans try to justify it saying the same unified bs and other shits like 8GB is enough for casual users. Imagine $1300 being a casual user's shit lol.
And oh, they have SSD swap. Shorter lifespan for the so called unified SSD that can't be replaced or upgraded.
What I can't understand is that people say to go for $999 MacBook Air for daily tasks. Like dude what? For $999, I wouldn't want it only for daily tasks.
Especially when you can get a Chromebook for under $200 and a standard laptop for less than half of what Apple offers and do better at that.

What kills me is how stingy and price fixing companies are with ram... When ram, and solid state memory is like the ONE THING we don't have particular shortages of nor is it that expensive to produce, it is ENTIRELY a weird aggressive stifled "No you're only allowed to have THIS much" industry brake pedal slamming.
Apple is simply saying: We don't allow a lot of apps, so we save the 8GB more than someone with 16GB that's free to use more apps.
I remember when 16 mb (not GB) of Apple RAM was £495
Apple don’t want to give anything away, no matter how cheap it is to produce.
It’s the same in the airline industry, they’d rather have empty seats on the aircraft than give you a last minute deal.
because those are the things that can easily future proof devices. we've reached a point where your average processor is enough for most peoples browsing needs but the thing that helps a lot is ram and storage. browsers, programs and games use more ram and storage to keep things snappy and feature rich. so its in apple's best interest to limit ram and storage especially on devices like laptops that most people can't easily upgrade because the sooner they hit that "oh it's slow and needs more storage" the better.
I have a laptop that seemed to be reaching the end of it's life and running out of space but since I figured I was going to throw it out I decided to look up what ram sticks it used and bought an extra stick and a larger newer ssd. It brought back my laptop from the dead and continues to be my main laptop to use. I just avoided buying a new laptop for a literal fraction of the cost and that money didn't even go to the manufacturer. this scares companies like apple

Dell, Lenovo and HP have always been known rip-offs. Why buy them? I bought Linux computers here is Spain. Made by a company called Vant. The computer, with free mechanical keyboard, cost slightly more than the RAM for an Apple computer. Just over €400. I run Linux Mint _and_ Ubuntu Studio on it. Lenovo (for the legion slim 5) allows you to upgrade your ram in the ‘Build Your PC’ option for, I believe, $40 (8GB -> 16GB). Also, I’ve done some research and have found that Lenovo laptop to be quite reliable. I haven’t heard many bad things about Lenovo in general, but I could have had a fairly limited search.

Does that work dynamically, or is the compression on at all times? I'm glad to see that 10 years later the technology is so advanced now that 8GB is all you need in a "premium" product, aimed at the same tasks 🤣

For a developer, it's actually the other way around when comparing to a PC running Linux. Since MacOS doesn't support running Docker containers natively, we have to run a virtual machine and allocate like 2GB just for that.
So, 8GB on a PC is a bare minimum for software development, 8GB on a mac just doesn't work.

I love how the Apple rep is like "people should go and see how the "technology" is being used?" Isn't that your damn job Apple Marketing?
It is, and that's the answer.
1. "Efficient use of memory" is mainly on the user with how many apps are open at a time.
2. Windows also has memory compression.
3. If the 16 GB is significantly faster with everything else being the same, then that tells me memory ISN'T being used efficiently.
You don't get it, it is apple memory
Even Linux does memory compression under the hood.
Also 3. What that should tell you is the swap file is being constantly used, which on a SSD is an easy way to eat into ssd life. Now, swapfiles on SSDs are fine if rarely used, or as a caching mechanism on a NAS. What isn't fine is pretending SSDs are RAM
@Demopans5990 - On 8 gigs of RAM, apple will DESTROY your SSD in terms of mem swapping. People have tested this, the system swaps over 125+ GB of SSD in a day.
I forget if this is 5 or 8 hours though, still...
SSD fails. Apple offers to repair for $5000😊
"If the 16 GB is significantly faster with everything else being the same, then that tells me memory ISN'T being used efficiently"
I think you misunderstood something here and there are a few things making this result as extreme:
- >8GB Ram were NEEDED on a 8GB Ram computer
- It was a base model, the one with super slow SSD, and the SSD is used for the swap memory.
- The tasks was pretty long/hefty to be honest... as soon the SSD lowers its transfer speed which happens after a while... performance just drops.
- Was it that inefficient? Have you any comparison with a Windows Computer running on 8GB Ram and doing those tasks? I guess the Windows Machine would be absolutely unusable at those tasks!
It was even obvious at a comparison between M1 Pro and M2 Pro Base models... the much slower SSD on the M2 Pro basically hurts the performance extremely when you are coming into longer swap usage and so a M2 Pro can be slower than a M1 Pro (but is mostly faster)
"We just happen to be aable to use it much more efficiently."
My potato pc (which is only used as a media pc) for 4 months only had 2GB of RAM. It was perfectly capable to run Windows 10 and play a CZcams 1080p livestream... in a 2006 CPU.

This is absolutely hilarious because DDR memory isn't even expensive. In terms of power consumption and physical size constraints, it shouldn't really be a major issue, either. So they're absolutely just trolling their customers, seeing how far they can be pushed before they break.
Even more hilarious is when sackmashers like yourself have no idea what they are talking about.

I'm having mental flashbacks to 2003 when Apple claimed 400 MHz on a PowerPC was equivalent to 2 GHz on an Intel- CPU. Back then, Apple was kind of stuck with PowerPC architecture, at least until 2006 when they transitioned to Intel. The difference now is Apple could easily upgrade their entry-level spec to 16GB for almost no added cost, but refuses to do so.
In the early days if Pentium IV (the 1.6-2.0 GHz models), that wasn't far from the truth. Early Pentium IVs were smoked by 1 Ghz Pentium 3s in some tests and even 750 MHz P3s in a few outlier ones. I remember my 33 Mhz NextStation smoking 200 MHz Pentium 2s when compiling.
