      @@dblevins343 you argue that 8gb is "fine" because you don't understand how OSes or processors work.
      If you have a super fast processor, and fail to feed it fast enough, you are basically underutilizing it. Your processor will constantly be waiting for something to do. Also 8gb when you have a hi res screen that is going to suck up much of that RAM is a recipe for disaster.
      No way 8gb is in any way acceptable. You might as well just buy an Intel Celeron. No need for an M3 because you can't feed it fast enough anyway.

    • @dblevins343
      @dblevins343 Před 7 měsíci +33

      @acasualviewer5861 I think you might be surprised. 8GB can still work great. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely underspec compared to the other components in this build. It would be a huge bottle neck depending on what you're doing with the computer.
      But it still depends. As dumb as it is, the vast majority of people I know who own Macs never actually use them for anything intensive. For the average user, 8GB is fine. If they're trying to do things that actually require good specs, the 8GB will 100% show its head as the weak spot.
      My laptop is still running Windows great to this day. I have a Surface Book 2 back from 2018-2019. It still has a high resolution screen. Don't get me wrong, if I pull up practically any game on my laptop, the GPU (1050) in it and RAM are bottlenecks. But, that's not its job.
      The issue here is that 8GB of RAM is clearly under-spec for the price. At this price point in 2023, this is atrocious. It literally makes the other components feel like they're wasted. Then there's the price to upgrade to 16GB lol. $200 is absurd. But, that's Apple. It's one of the main reasons I don't own anything Apple anymore.

      When APPLE used the IBM PowerPC processors in their Powerbook G4’s they had clock speeds up to 667 Mhz, while Windows notebooks had Intel and AMD laptop specific processors with 1.5 GHz speeds. However, those PowerPC’s were a different architecture than Intel and AMD chips, which meant that those 667 MHz speeds were actual equivalent to a 1.6Ghz desktop PC Intel Pentium processors than a 1.6 notebook Celeron chip…
      Since APPLE uses their own silicon processors, which are head and shoulders above Snapdragon chips, and more efficient than Intel chips, it is entirely possible that 8GB of RAM is enough for a MacBook to suffice for ninety percent of what people will actually use it for. Power users will obviously need more RAM…
      I am also guessing the majority of the critics are not computer hardware engineers either…

      @@superzero4250 Uh. For the G4 years Athlon was king of the roost, the 64bit instruction set that was so good even Intel licensed it from them because they couldn't do better in house. At the tail end of G4 was Intel Pentium D and Intel CoreDuo. G4 was so bad Apple switched to Intel. They had been upset with it's performance for years. The years G4 was around were explosively good for PC chips. That was the changeover to 64bit, which PowerPC didn't have. That was the changeover to hyperthreading... again PPC didn't have. The change to multicore, PPC didn't have. The major things we think of as a CPU now days the baseline minimum came out of those years. The next decade of CPU development was refining the major leaps forward of that era.
      The fundamental problem with PPC, ARM, and now M is they aren't general processors. Not the way x86 is. They don't have to do everything well, they only have to do a few things well. They are good at what they do and bad at everything else. PPC, ARM, and M are all RISC. What that means is everything is handled as a separate operation. Any I/O call needed for a calculation, even to cache, is a separate order that needs to be put in the queue. RISC can't fire off orders mid operation, everything has to be queued before the operation takes place. This makes RISC really really good at known operations the pipeline is going to be doing. It's absolutely dogcrap at anything with changing data sets where one operation is waiting for another operation to complete. There's tricks to alleviate it, RISC can run every operation except the ones which absolutely need the new data then run those once it gets it. Unfortunately that's not always possible and it's just a basic design of how RISC works and it can't be gotten around. RISC just bottoms out in certain types of workloads. One thing about RISC, it does really really good at synthetics. Always has. The processor is handled a known data set and then just told to crunch through it. PPC back in the day had synthetic numbers which looked really good and fell apart in the real world. It did crap at anything where user input can upset the whole applecart by asking for something that's not already in queue. It had to toss everything and start over from scratch. Modern RISC isn't that bad, caching has come a long way since then to alleviate the problems. L3 wasn't a thing in PPC days so it doesn't have to flush everything out of memory like it used to. It's just still not as good at handling complex changing datasets as x86. Nowhere near as good. RISC works more like how we think a modern GPU works in how it handles processing data than a CPU.
      People often see the flashy numbers on all the synthetic benchmarks for ARM and M then OOOH and AHHH. Well. ARM servers have been trying to get off the ground for a decade now and falling flat. Linux has had ARM support for a decade, Microsoft Server for half a decade. And well. Most workloads a server does just don't work with ARM. We see it on our tablets and phones too. Streaming video, wonderful. Known dataset, take the information, crunch the numbers, output video. Ever try to load a large spreadsheet onto an ARM tablet and run it natively? It's shit. It is on M too. The saving grace of RISC now days is how much is ran over the cloud in a web browser, the calculations aren't done on your computer. That only goes so far. Sooner or later people are going to want to do some level of native processing for things RISC is bad at.
      And btw. This notebook is taking full usage of web apps. 8gigs of ram to open Safari and use everything in a webapp. That's what this notebook's target use case is. For people who can do everything over the web, great. Wonderful. Buy this, have fun with it. Never look back. For everyone else, avoid it like the plague.

    I had a 16GB RAM MBP. Cost $2799. Company owned it. If I turned on MS Teams, Slack, and Chrome at the same time, it just crashed or got stuck. I got a 32 GB RAM model next, it helped slightly, but anytime something had to be run, the fans kicked on. It didn’t crash as much but was just slower all the time.
    Meanwhile my 7 year old Windows laptop with worse specs and 16 GB RAM has never frozen. And it runs those apps completely fine. As in, AutoCAD, Illustrator, Chrome, some other MS Office apps, and Zoom. All at once, no problems. Cost $1000
    Apple sucks. No way around it. Unless you pay $$$$$ but that’s not a fair comparison.

      Only since M chips. before the M1 performance was just bad. Then it was a trade off between build quality, good speakers, keyboard, trackpad, screen, longevity, reliability or performance. Now it's a trade off between better build qualitiy _and_ performance or gaming compatibility.
      Apple is also working on gaming.
      Yes, i know. I also used to compare specs and people who claimed worse specs were better seemed brainwashed to me.
      Just small examples:
      - iphone has lower Megapixels camera, lower GHz chip, lower RAM, and lower battery capacity. Yet it takes better videos, has the fastest chip, not the best RAM but equal to competition - that has twice the GB - and longest battery life.

    • @enosunim
      @enosunim Před 6 měsíci

      @@powerplay074yeah, it depends on what your work is and what use is 'average' for you. I have 64Gb of RAM, and firefox after a week of usage, can eat 32Gb RAM with no trouble at all. And I have other programs to run too.
      But if 'work' is open one tab at browser and one offline word document, then yeah, I guess 8Gb is alright.
      If you use online programs like Figma, Chrome can eat 2-4Gb just for one tab. And there are also other online service, like MS Teams, Google Docs, Web Email clients... And all this with adblocker enabled. Disable AdBlocker and say 'bye bye' to your RAM.
      And games on the other hand are alright with 8Gb and 4 cores. As they are console oriented these days, and those have 4 cores and 8Gb of RAM.
      So the paradox is, you can easily find a game for any old PC, like x86, or PIII does not matter. But work, if it is connected with Internet, you can not use old PC. Well, recently progress is not so much, so a 10 year, 'premium' PC from those years, with 4 cores and 8Gb can at least open something. But if you take an 'average' PC from those times from people like you "oh, 2Gb RAM is alright for work, and 2 cores is OK". Then those are no go now. You open google and that's it.

      I know, no one will believe this without trying themselves, but the memory swap works like magic. It turns your whole ssd into ram. And while that might be a little bit slow for certain tasks, it is more than fast enough for video editing. As I said, I know you won't believe it. I wouldn't trust a random internet comment either. I have a 2022 M2 Macbook Air 8GB which I primarily use in my music studio. I use it to control my DJ hardware with DJ software, to handle my gear while producing music and ocassionally do a bit of website editing. It all depends on your needs. As a former IT-professional, I've seen a LOT of (idiots..) people who really relied on the placebo effect, without realizing it. More RAM is nice, but only if the task(s) you're doing requires it. And only if the system can handle it. There is no point in adding more RAM to a machine when the software only uses half of it.
    That said however, it's an absolute criminal thing to charge 600 bucks for a RAM upgrade that's 90% cheaper on Windows systems.

      it depends a lot on how the system is made. the increased latency (the most common issue with VRAM compared to regular RAM) is generally offset by the physical layout and speed of the unified RAM. it's why consoles have the RAM in a tight circle around the SOC.

    In 2017, 8GB was already unbearable to have on a gaming PC, 16GB was the bare minimum, and as today for me that minimum would be 32GB. At least it's what you need in order to avoid swapping at all cost, or, even get rid of the swap once for all (your NVMe SSD will thank you for that... by not dying), what I did 15yrs ago, even before SSDs became a thing, and I don't regreat it.
    8GB is just good for the backup Thinkpad I have just in case, and for network maintenance...
