    I took a big step in my life today was my first day as an EMT. I’ve enjoyed my 6 years in law enforcement but this is something I’ve wanted to do for a while. I want to thank you for the knowledge you have shared through your videos and I will continue to watch your videos because I think some of the information bleeds over. The biggest thing that you have to worry about in rural areas is dark county roads with not much shoulder.

      Congratulations!!! That's awesome. I just got my date to start at the Sheriff's department. I got hired as a deputy but EVERY deputy starts out in the detention center :P I've already been measured and fitted for uniforms. So it looks like we're both starting a brand new chapter in our lives today. Honestly, I want to be patrol, but I also want to get my EMT-B just for personal knowledge and growth, and to be prepared both on and off the job. Let me be the first to say that EMTs have very special places in my heart. My father's life was saved by an EMT team :) Thank you for all your service.

    "Move over" laws work a little bit for emergency vehicles, a bit less for vehicles with yellow lights and not at all for civilians.
    Police need to start setting up "Move over" traps like they do with speed traps. Ideally with unmarked cars.
    I'm not for entrapment, but frankly I don't want to be sideswiped while changing a flat tire.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  Před 6 lety +6

      +Anthony Clauser the Illinois state police was doing that here a while ago. I've found that truck drivers are usually in the right lane and they move over no matter what.

    • @bencunningham6298
      @bencunningham6298 Před 6 lety +3

      Surprisingly some states aren't too bad when it comes to civilians. Ohio is probably one of the best at moving over compared to PA which is absolutely terrible. They don't even move over for emergency vehicles haha

    • @bluenetmarketing
      @bluenetmarketing Před 6 lety

      I think the so-called move over laws are fascist CRAP!!! It's getting so we need a "rules navigator" in the passenger seat to keep track of all of the politically correct bull crap that all the worry wart meddlesome leftist snowflakes want us all to do.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  Před 6 lety +3

      +bluenetmarketing move over laws are pretty universal and are taught in driver's education. They are for everyone's safety. Nobody wants a pile up on the e-way because you clip a person or a car on the side of the road and spin out. All you have to do is move over or slow down when approaching a vehicle displaying any flashing lights that is on the shoulder. As a former truck driver I can attest that it isn't too hard.

    • @bluenetmarketing
      @bluenetmarketing Před 6 lety

      It sounds good, but I have seen more accidents caused by people "moving over" than by people piling up into someone on the side of the road. Think of it. Let's stick three lanes of tightly packed traffic moving at 80 mph into two lanes of traffic "right now". Nope. Won't work. Bad idea.

  • @erictaylor5462
    @erictaylor5462 Před 6 lety +6

    I was behind a motorcycle cop once who went down on the free way. He was pretty badly hurt but I stopped in the lane behind him with my flashers on to keep him from being run over. I used the police radio to call for help (this was before cell phones were very popular) and started giving the cop first aid.
    Fortunately help arrived very quickly and the cop survived, but stopping on the freeway like that was one of the scariest things I've ever done.
    I also learned that if you want cops there quick, use their radio and say "CHP Dispatcher, you have an officer down, MVA he's hurt bad, send an ambulance quick...." and give the location.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  Před 6 lety +1

      +Eric Taylor Giving the location helps alot. Almost every E-way crash that is called in the location is wrong.

    • @erictaylor5462
      @erictaylor5462 Před 6 lety

      This happened right next to an off ramp. I just called it in as "About a 1/4 mile south of the (whatever) off ramp on the particular highway." I prefer mile markers, but this highway didn't have them at the time.
      Also, just FYI, "a lot" is two words, not one. I don't know why, but it should be "a lot" is two words while "heretofore" is one. All I can think of is it must be lawyers.

  • @MrTehPenguin
    @MrTehPenguin Před 6 lety +24

    I'm an EVT so bit of advice for when you guys order vehicles, try to limit or not have white lights to the rear. Basically for oncoming traffic it's like having flashing highbeams and blinds drivers and will overpower the amber/red/blue lights that should be the primary and most recognizable warning lights.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  Před 6 lety +6

      +TooManyLights I would take that advice and run with it but nobody at the pd asks me my opinion on the car setup. They just give it to me and I deal with what they give.

    • @MrTehPenguin
      @MrTehPenguin Před 6 lety +1

      Because they're bright. I do taillight and reverse light flashers on nearly all my builds because that little bit of white is attention grabbing but not blinding. I'm also a firefighter so I also know what us first responders have to expect when it comes to making sure people see us when we're pulled over.

    I got 34 years in, I retire in 1 year & 8 months when my youngest daughter finishes law school; this youn man ( I DON'T know where he graduated the academy from, but he's way better than our salty dog instructors for yearly 40 hour residual hours mamdated by our state.If our instructors were THIS interesting there would be less cops being hurt & killed. Thank you young fella, now all you have to do is keep millenial boots, to stay off their smartphones & listen to Senior Corporal instructors while they're talking. My hypothesis is; if you are a cherry, and still a proby, a tenured Senior Corporal can keep you from IAD investigations, can keep you, your partner & an innocent third party ALIVE, can make you an extremely productive cop, keep you away from civil rights investigations, help you decide what devision is best for you : traffic, gang unit, detective exam, horse patrol, moto jockey, bike patrol, tactical etc. Without this productive Senior Corporal instructor, it's possible to do 20 years tenure, end up as a salty dog, in a division that you were never happy in.

    A little off topic but you should do a video on how to drive and emergency vehicle in the snow. I've seen shows like Alaska State Troopers for example where they are driving a Crown Vic at 120mph while responding to an emergency call in a snow storm. I'm wondering if there are certain skill sets or is there some super secret cool package attached to the vehicle. I drive a Mercury Grand Marquis and sometimes get stuck.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  Před 6 lety +5

      +Jonathan DiBello I'm pretty sure the AST put chains and/or studs on their tires. LE has long since started transitioning to AWD cars which are significantly safer to drive in winter conditions. We have found that the costs of the cars easily are offset by the reduction in collisions and the associated insurance, damages, and light duty/time off for those injured.
      When we had only the Cvpi's though the biggest thing was not to drive that fast and to feather the gas and brake. Plan ahead to stop and scan ahead like you are driving a motorcycle. I hope that helps a bit. I don't suggest driving 120 in a grand marquise in the snow. There is no training for that, there is only stupidity. It is too bad it makes for such great TV, but I can assure you those scenes are almost always the result of clever editing to make it look like they are going faster than they are.

    • @jaysmith1408
      @jaysmith1408 Před 4 lety +1

      Matt Moon 9C1. The crown vic handled like a Nimitz class carrier. I hated that car. The slowest patrol car on the road. Heavy, gigantic, and a large yet underpowered motor. Another department in our county has the Caprice 9C1, runs like a bat out of hell (forgetting exact numbers, but that’s like 2nd fastest behind the Charger) only glitch is cylinder deactivation that gets confused, and therefore broken, by the response driving. I have the P71’s replacement, but with the 3.5 is the second slowest on the road, only to the Crown Vic. Great improvement. The only thing i give to the Vic (which is apparently the only reason anyone bought the damned things) is they are a breeze to repair. That’s it. If i had a choice, i’d take the Caprice, then the Charger, then the Mustang, then the Explorer, then the Taurus, then motorcycle, then mounted patrol, then those stupid smart cars NYPD has, then walking a beat, then desk duty, then the Crown Vic.

      Well, it's like that body armor test you did. In most cases getting hit with a .30-06 round hurts less without a vest than with a vest, but only because toy have to be alive to feel pain.
      I have helped after accidents as well. In one, the driver was ejected in a roll over, then the car rolled over him, crushing his body, but leaving his head intact. He was alive and alert for about 30 minutes, but passed not long after EMT's arrived (it was a very remote location). By far the least pleasant thing I've had to do was comforting him as he died. I'm sure you've seen worse, but I'm not a cop.

      Chief Joe depends, there is far less ignoring of reds and blues (a bit less of ambers) than of four ways. I move over or slow (damn near to a crawl with four ways) for anybody, but when i’m roadside, my blues are a godsend. Was coming back from a road test of one of our trucks, overheard a dispatch for a MVI (not our district, but was driving past) stopped to make contact, had amber flashers on, reds on, lightbar on, traffic advisor on, was like I wasn’t even there.

    I have a question. I'm looking for a home defense handgun and I can't decide what caliber. My top picks are a SIG P226 (9mm) and a SIG P227 (.45). I can shoot 9mm and .45 about the same. What would you reccomend.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  Před 6 lety +1

      +Abhishek Singh Whichever you want to carry on your person as you are lounging around the house. Otherwise you aren't defending anything with it you are just having an unrealistic fantasy day at the gun store. I would also suggest not storing large quantities of narcotics in your house or getting involved with a gang. Realistically, if you aren't involved in either if those things you are at quite a minimal risk of a home invasion. Most burglars don't come in the middle of the night like on TV, they come in the middle of the day when nobody is home because they don't want a fight.
      If your question is about caliber it really depends only on the ammo you wish to use and your expectations of what it will accomplish. Both the 226 and 227 are excellent guns and you couldn't go wrong with either for any purpose you would need a handgun for.

    Pulling over to the side of the road seems to be sufficiently covered but what about hazards in the middle of the highway? Fallen mattress, bumper, car sear, scrap metal? I know it is free field training and not free field academy but how would you handle removing a hazard like that while traffic is moving at 60 to 80+ miles per hour.
    California has its own method, specifically the department of the highway patrol. It looks effective but not necessarily the safest from what I can gather from other LEOs in different states. I shit you not sir. I have seen one of these guys break traffic traveling at an average of 70+ during rush hour, park their shiny explorer in the middle of a 4 + 4 lane highway and then proceed to sweep the lane like day laborers on a gravel plantation. I know its a safety hazard for the road but is that really the safest thing to do? What happened to those 40 new M6 Avalanche street moppers the state district ordered last year? I haven't heard of anyone doing this sorta thing outside of California. Is there something different you guys do in Illinois.
    CHP = Caltrans with guns.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  Před 6 lety +1

      +Daniel KB6AOK I'm not a highway guy but we have idiot help trucks which are built on a semi truck chassis and have crash bumpers in the back or a tow setup. If the hazard is large they get it off the road. If the hazard is from a collision the tow company is supposed to take care of it.

      @RealShipmate Před 6 lety

      I think we have something similar although more wrecker styled. Sorta like the Int. Workstar looking trucks. There pretty much flatbeds with a small work crane on em and they got big blade style push bars on em.
      However bro, nothing beats the speed and availability of a push bar. Boxes, scrap, bed frames, and even other cars.
