Since Konami and M2 (the latter being the company that developed the Rebirth games) have given us some pretty neat Contra and Castlevania collections in recent years, surely they could give us a Rebirth collection featuring this, Gradius Rebirth, and Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth...I would download it onto my Switch posthaste!

Emily is so right. Konami seems insane for leaving easy money on the table. Their leadership is so focused on anything and everything OTHER than actual video games. They have a real passion of making their employees miserable too.
Konami, on the whole, deserves its very own What Happened episode on account of how they've fallen from grace...if Matt is up to the challenge of making such an episode, we'll have to wait and see!

Konami already makes a lot of money just from selling Yu-Gi-Oh booster packs and random goods like bottled water, whatever money they can gain from selling old game compilations is pretty much inconsequential for them. They'll do that from time to time just because, but they don't really need to.

Konami has access to multiple IPs that hold nostalgic value for many gamers, the current nostalgia focused generation with many retro releases holds even more opportunity for low risk high reward game projects they could invest time and money in.
And not to mention give a hearty boost to to their rep and word of mouth which are in the garbage currently.
These are both facts.
This game is just full of weird and obscure references. For example, 16:59 is a reference to the movie poster for Victory, starring Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine and Pelé. Such a weird game.
Also, to answer your question, Brownie is a reference to the robot character with the same name from Contra Hard Corps, who might've been a reference to Probotector.
Yeah, and then we got the Escape from New York/Escape from L.A. nod with Newt Plisskin as a nod to Snake from the movies. :)
I love how they mixed in Contra HardCorps music into this as well. HardCorps is probably my favorite of the series.
Hard Corps is a god darn masterpiece! the closest a modern game has come to it's greatness is probably MGR: Revengeance. (but Hard Corps has way better music)

Yup, the rebranding of Contra was due to Germany banning games with violent imagery involving humans for minors. Keep in mind, by the time the first Contra game came out, the USK wasn't a thing yet, so your choices were either "edit" or "no ability to sell at all".
Oh we also had the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles in Germany.

Oh god, they loli-waifu'd Brownie. They're my favorite character from my favorite Contra game, Hard Corps. Was too short to get hit by a lot of stuff and was the only character that could double jump. Kinda fell off the series after the SNES/Genesis generation, but this looked like a good time.

This looks cool and decent for a close enough modern Contra game. If they make another collection,they should include both Contra Rebirth and Castlevania: The Adventure on modern ports.

About those human enemies - it depends on the game we're talking about.
In most cases those are indeed just brainwashed and/or mutated soldiers, captured by the alien forces (first two games, for example), but in, for example, Contra Hard Corps (the very best game in the series, in my not so humble opinion) all the humans are just loyal to the big bad (i.e. ex-war hero colonel Bahamut), so they're still humans but bad 'cause he's bad in that game.
Btw, Contra's lore is amazing, love it with all of my heart!
Play the underrated Contra Shattered Soldier and the best non-contra Contra game: Hard Corps Uprising.
If Konami eventually releases a Contra Collection Vol. 2, I hope they include this game and Hard Corps Uprising.
25:10 Shadow Beast Kimkoh first appeared in the NES port of Super Contra which would make it roughly coincide with the start of Berserk's publication, and it really does look like a prime candidate for an apostle design, as do many other Contra aliens, but the similarities most likely just stem from the creators' common inspirations being Giger and the Alien franchise. Still, Miura did mention in interviews that he played video games, which makes me wonder if he was aware of Contra and what sort of games he enjoyed (other than Idolmaster), especially considering what an impact he had on gaming.
The intro... so many Konami Easter Egg, Galactic President looks like Snake, and also there is a reference to the old classic shooter Salamander that play similar to Gradius
Lmao that missile animation has me dying. Up, down, up, down. And fires missiles like... Wtf who thought that was a good boss fight? But then again the story scenes and how they are written is a spectacle to behold too. Just a good mindless shooter it seems.
i'm not sure if Brownie is related to probotector, but i'm thinking they are making a reference to the Genesis game "Contra Hard Corp" as brownie was a playable character (tiny robot guy that actually had a small booster pack that kind of gave him a double jump)
"salamander" is a reference to the US game Life force (salamander was the title in some other countries). while not directly a contra game, it's treated by many as part of the series because of some of the similar styles/themes used
I remember enjoying this because the last Contra I played before this, Shattered Soldier, just didn't feel like Contra at all. I mean it was still fun, it just felt like Contra in name only.
They need to include this Contra Rebirth in the Contra Anniversary Collection game. They also need to port the other Rebirth games like Castlevania the Adventure Rebirth and Gradius Rebirth in newer consoles and PC!

Today I finish this game in nightmare difficulty with 3 lives with BR-W9 using a game cube controller... quite a challenge but I really enjoyed.

I’m positive the Galactic President is a photoshopped image of Che Guevara, so alien invasion or no I’m definitely down with whatever alternate reality this game is set in.
I think Contra ReBirth is my favorite of the Wii arcade updates. xb360 had some arcade/remake bangers too. Such great memories.

I bought this and Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth, though I never did get Gradius Rebirth. I'll probably never get to play it either, knowing Konami.
Huh. Of all the weird Contra games that have popped up over the years, I missed this one.
The last Contra I’ve bought was Contra 4, which I recommend.
I liked the IDEA of the laser when I was a kid, like it lacked the speed and coverage of the others but it would be way stronger. Sadly, I have no proof that it is stronger because most things die in one shot unless they are stationary turret things or bosses, and the bosses soak up so much damage that the time saved with the laser wouldn't be worth it. (My only experience is with older Contras, never played Rebirth)
I need a new, modern reboot of Probotector. Love them mecha soldiers in Super Probotector. Time to pivot. Let the Contra bros be Contra, and give Probotector their own personality in a new game. Just, keep the posing with guns after the missions.
It's a Shame Drag Queen Lance wasn't playable in Rebirth.

I always assumed Laser did massive damage, but due to it's limited hitbox radius & situational usage, it was rarely used

Those endless crawling lady face aliens are baby versions of the boss of the NES version of Super C. The one they added to the bonus level from arcade
Boy, i hope Matt enjoyed Castlevania: Nocturne as much as i did because it fucking owns so many bones
I still find it hilarious when people still think any gun but the spread sucks.
Fire is what got me through Super C and trivialized the last stage and boss, and the laser utterly carves through enemies in this game.

All the rebirth games are remakes of older games. Specifically game boy remakes. Konami is only interested in rereleasing the original games, not remakes. It would be cool, but it probably won't happen.
Exactly what game boy game is Contra Rebirth based on? I've read up about it, and I see zero evidence in regards to that.

They leave out one or two obvious inclusions so when they release the second collection it'll give you that one reason to bother spending more money.

Contra Rogue Corps, the last and worst. It was janky, tried to hard to be funny and edgy at the same time, reused way too many assets, and committed the biggest sin of any Contra game.
It had weapon overheating.
On a Contra game - a franchise that's all about constantly shooting everything has a FRICKIN WEAPON OVERHEATNIG MECHANIC! I just can't...
The panda was cute though.
I hope Konami learns from their mistake and make a proper Contra game.

Thats the one Contra I don't hear being talked about that often, I'm not even sure what the general opinion was on Hard Corps Uprising. While I dont recall if anything was special about about the gameplay (honestly it's been a long time) I do love how it pretty much felt like a Guilty Gear x Contra game with it's Daisuke Ishiwatari ost and character designs pretty much being Sol and Baiken😂
@@nocturnalscotsman I remember there was some debate as to whether it was a "real" Contra game, but I played it quite a bit and enjoyed the heck out of it. It has tons of replayability with different characters and various power-ups and weapons you buy at an in-game shop.

This isn't a new game. It is a remake of a game boy game. Also, when are you going to play mighty final fight on NES? It was available on virtual console for Wii, Wii U and 3DS so you probably heard of it before. It's also included in the Capcom classics mini mix for GBA.
How is this a remake of a game boy game? Which one, exactly? That was true in the case of Castlevania, but this is an all new entry in Contra.

Are the graphics and characters really the "baseline" for Rogue Corps, though? I'd have to disagree, that's set dressing, the baseline are the awful, unfun mechanics and design decisions. They'd basically have to remake an actually fun game, and if you're willing to do that, call it a new game! Don't tie it to the baggage of an awful game that everyone hated and that flopped super hard.

@Flophouse Plays I kind of hate how a ton of the enemies are just kind of zombie filler, too, though. A fair counter might be "that's accurate to the rank and file of a normal Contra", which might technically be true, but it sure doesn't FEEL that way. Normally the crazy enemies really stand out and are memorable, that game is just a stinky blur to me.
