- I faced a higher rated opponent on board 1 in the 2nd round of the 4th Croatian league.
He usually plays c4 on move one, and I was preparing for that for the last several days. On the board he played 1.e4 without thinking…
Đorđe Brkić (2082) vs Stjepan Tomić (1865), 4th Croatian League A, Rd 2, 03/17/19
Caro-Kann, Advance Variation
Right out of the opening, my opponent allowed me to equalize. He played the bishop exchange early on. Soon after, he made another bad move. Played Nh4 after I have already played h6, positively inviting g5! This gave me confidence and I knew I must have been better.
Another mistake came soon. I attacked the b2 pawn, and he just let it hang for “activity”. I was a clear pawn up and had an amazing position.
Then, when I should have just kept things simple and converted, it got messy. He played h4 and Kg2, preparing for h4 and Rh1, f4, obviously. I knew the threat existed, but castled anyway. This was a strategic error from a human perspective. This gave him a chance. I was still winning but it wasn’t easy anymore. After that, I knew I had to play actively and go for as much counter play on the queenside as possible.
I did exactly that and my advantage grew. It was -3 at one point. A few inaccuracies and his attack became more and more obvious. Even though there were no pieces around my king yet, I got worried and thought a long time. I reacted well, keeping up the pressure, but then slowly messed up.
In a matter of 10 moves my advantage was gone, and my opponent was now in the driver’s seat. His attack was huge, his threats overwhelming and my position lost. Despite having the correct ideas, I misplayed them and gave him enough time to strike. I was now losing. I had one final trick, and…

3:32 New opening - the Tomić System!
Haha:D
Nice win
Thanks Casey.
Congratulations! Very instructive game and nice saving in the end. You made a mistake, he made even bigger one. That´s what I love on chess.
That is true. Chess is about who makes the last mistake:)
Wow that was a nail-biter for sure, very enjoyable to watch. Your thinking process and calculation skills are so much ahead of mine, but with your explanations I can understand it. Very nice game and congratulations on getting the point.
Thank you very much Ajarn:) It was a nail biter to play too I can tell you:D
I really dig the channel! Thanks for the great content!
No problem Federico!
congrtulations Mr Stjepan good game
Thanks Said:)
Congratulations! Your understanding of Chess is much higher than your actual rating. Keep on the good fight!
Thank you!! I appreciate it , really!
A memorable win your career.!! Just step on the accelerator .. keep going mate.
Thanks friend:)
You out-played a stronger opponent for 90% of the game! You MUST be happy with that. It was a very good win regardless of your weak moves. Well done!
I was happy, but the three bad moves I made could've lost me the game. I should work on patience. I had enough time on the clock.
Go get it Stjepan !
:)
Many thanks for your channel ! Good JOB !! Very instructive game Thank u stjepan
Thank you Abdellah!
I love this video. It was a very good way to learn from mistakes. Thumbs up for You.
Thank you Naveed, as always:)
It's so often your analysis of a critical move starts with "I knew what should've been played here, but i decided to go with...", going against yourself :D You should trust yourself, trust your knowledge, you are a good player, don't spice things up unnecessarily and make the game harder to win, good game!
That is true Nate. thanks for the tip:)
In these types of games, the result is what matters. Glad to see you winning some,, although to be fair, your opponent did play really badly (that g4 man.. :D).
Even though - just like Ben Johnson - I would be surprised and amazed if you managed to pull the GM title off, I am still rooting for you :) There is a lot of leaps ahead, but this is already a small step :)
Hvala Vjeko:) He did play incredibly dubious moves. Nh4?, g4?, a4?, Qxd8??. But yeah, the result matters.
@@HangingPawns Well I dont really think a4 was that bad considering the circumstances.
But yeah, especially Nh4 and g4 violated virtually every principle there is :)
Wow great analysis and good win, keep going. It would be interesting seeing you play something other than the Caro-Kann against e4, something maybe more aggresive/sharp. Love your content anyway!
odlican kanal, samo nastavi. nadam se da ces takodje se ubrzo dokopati titule neke
Hvala puno na željama i pohvalama:)
Castles 😂.... Good stuff!
:D
Thoughtful analysis. You provide an excellent model for anyone who wants to improve their chess and is willing to work on it.
You continue to impress me with the calibre of your instruction.
Thank you David. You continue to provide tremendous support:)

Many thanks sir. I wish you continuing success in your quest to become a Grandmaster.
really cool game, keep sharing your journey with us!
I will Sedylon! Thanks!
Congratulations with the win :)
Thanks:)
A reminder that your rating is an indication of your previous strength, not your current😁
:) Always a pleasure to read your comments Michael.
An amazingly perceptive comment, Michael Van Zyl!
What a crazy game! I bet your seat was sweaty lolol
Yeaaah. My hands were wet before Qxa5....
As usual, great material! After your videos I decided to give up with French Defense in favour of Caro-Kann.
Great! Another c6 warrior!:D
And thank you very very much for the support. I'm not just saying. It really means a lot to me. Thank you!:)
I thought you was going to lose the game after that kingside push. Nice victory
Well i am no one to judge a great player like u . But the Engine analysis was just hilarious. I ll say u must play the moves which ur gut asks u to. All the moves that u evaluated first were right.
Well, the engine sees stuff. So its recommendations don't necessarily have to look natural. I struggle to understand the ideas sometimes. My evaluation was ok I guess. I need to work on prophylaxis though.
Very educational game. I'm a caro player so I learned a lot.
Glad to hear that John. Thanks
You are a much better player than me, but I could see instantly that castling was just a bad move. The center is closed and both the f4 and c4 breaks are far away, while your treat of h5 is immediate. Anyway congrats on the win :)
Very true and obvious. Sometimes I'm blind and stupid. And thanks:)
Did you try to think back at what was going in your mind when you played that? I am pretty sure that if you saw that position while studying you would never consider castling. OTB chess is quite different, I make many obvious mistakes also sometimes :(
@@ginoginoh Well. I was fixated on my plan to castle, go Ng6 and Bg7 or e7. I thought ok, lets play it safe... But the problem was that it was the most unsafe move to play. What went on in my head? I've no idea. If I was a spectator I would throw up after 0-0. I'm often blinder when playing...
26:05 a4 was the best move..a4 was the best move!!!! .come on 💕👌
The engine doesn’t undersatnd Qd8! It’s a great human movE
lmao
Haha, true. A dubious move nevertheless:D
I can't understand how a 2200 player can take the Queen like that!
He played faaaaast that move.
Oh no... my Queen... my Queen.
HA!
Levon Aronian said at some high level tournament: "We as professional chess players prepare for everything BUT!" ;O)
(I was "lucky" at my last tournament game: My opponent knew I like the Spanish with both colors, so he wanted to go for a King's Gambit ... but I was "one move ahead" and played the Scandinavian! He went completely wrong and lost in 16 moves after some heavy howlers, but yes:
Normally you "miss" completely.
But all is not lost! If you "know" rather than "remember", your work may benefit you some other day.
Thanx for the Caro Kann series! It seems to be "in fashion" these days.
adblock disabled , thank you
Thank you:)
Hi Stephan. I recently watched one of your videos on assessing middle game positions. There is one concept that has baffled me for over 50 years and that is the idea of 'control'. How would you define 'control'? What does it mean when a commentator says that White has 'control' of the e4 square or that Black 'controls' the c-file? Until I can get my head around this idea, my ability to assess positions is severely limited. Many thanks
Hey Dave. I have made a video on key squares. It was the first one in the series. Perhaps it will clarify control even though it wasn't on it specifically. I will try to prepare one on the topic:)
@@HangingPawns I'll look forward to that. Thanks again.
HEY CAN YOU DO MANY MORE VIDEO ON KINGS GAMBIT PLEASE
too many doubts man, maybe you're just lacking confidence
True. I should be bolder when playing.
