Bogojevic Ranko vs Stjepan Tomic, Caro-Kann, Exchange Variation (B13)
5th Croatian League Center, Round 1
This is the first game I played since I began my channel. My plan is to analyze all the games I play, regardless of the result. I believe that will provide a lot of useful information for players who are close to my rating, since most videos out there cover games of players who are 700 points higher rated. That's useful as well, but learning from the mistakes made by players similar to your own level can help you improve faster.
I also think than analyzing my games in front of you will force me to improve my chess faster, and covering each and every defeat I suffer will definitely force me to right my mistakes as soon as possible.
This game was played in the 5th Croatian Chess League. Today we played the first round. My team, HAŠK Mladost Zagreb played Vrustun Vurnovec, who are higher rated on average. The league is played on six boards. I was playing on board 3 against an opponent rated 1832 (I’m currently rated 1761).
We played the Exchange Variation of the Caro-Kann and he blundered a pawn early on which he shouldn’t have given away. I was better throughout the game and we entered a same colored bishop ending in which I was a pawn up. It looked drawing but I managed to find a winning play and won the endgame! I must say I’m glad that the first game of my own I covered on the channel wasn’t a loss:D On all six boards my team played 4.5-1.5 with four wins, a draw and a loss, so we won as a team too!
I hope this helps and that you can relate to the level of play closer than when you look at grandmaster games. See you soon with more analysis! I’m not sure when I will have time and/or money to play a tournament, but I will be playing round 2 in the league two weeks from now. Cheers!

very nice video. I would like to suggest that try highlighting the square and drawing arrows when you are explaining because it would be much easier to follow even if you speak a little fast.

Please keep sharing more of your games. They're instructive and fun. I suggest that you use arrows as many of us are not very good at visualising continuations.. so just a suggestion. 😅
    Great video though 👍

Your idea to analyse without engine is great! I like this game, especially bishop's ending! Thank you for video and I'm waiting for another one. :)

I love the idea of this playlist. I am coming back from 2005 when I stopped playing and was thinking on doing something similar but just not to the GM level as that is really difficult. I wish you all the best and I hope you get there! Thanks again for your efforts.

I have just recently discovered your channel via your opening videos, so I am planning to watch, annotate and work through all your games in this series! I've been away from chess for a while and want to study more. I'm also trying to pick up the Caro-Kann so this was very instructive. I think with the final g4, you give Bxe4 Bxe4 Kxe4 but I think Bxe4 gxh3 is instantly winning. The bishop cuts off the h1 square and they will get traded immediately with the king now being being a tempo down and the pawn 1 rank farther, so you just queen and win.

You are correct:) Good luck with your Caro-Kann experience and with getting back to chess! And thanks for watching!

I just started watching this series as it seems interesting. You play different openings then I do so you are bound to have some interesting idears. The one move that jumps out to me this game is when your opponent played Ng3 and you took it with your knight. I have not checked any of this with an engine, but surely Nf4 is a much stronger move for black, since the white knight suffocates the darksquare bishop on h2 and has no real prospects from the g3 square. Followup moves for black could have then been Qg5 and Rad8 or Rac8.

Always nice to see the Caro-Kann in action and the ending was quite interesting :-)
I would like to point out one instructive mistake, which could have occurred in the game: at minute 16:30 concerning the variation 1...g4! you say 2.Bxe4(!) Bxe4(??) 3.Kxe4 g3 and you will eventually win the c3-pawn. While that is true, the resulting position K+h4+g3 vs. K+h3 is a well-known drawing constellation if the defending king is controlling the promotion square. White's own h3-pawn enables some kind of "stalemate fortress" whenever you advance the g3-pawn.
Still, 1...g4 was correct, of course since you can meet 2.Bxe4(!) with 2...gxh3!-+ and promotion of the h-pawn is inevitable.
