  • A game between Vladimir Kramnik and Fabiano Caruana from the Tata Steel tournament 2018.
A brilliant Caro-Kann, exchange variation (B13), in which Kramnik played for the initiative the whole game, not following main line exchange Caro-Kann, which can often be slow and boring.

    Kramnik is an endgame master.

As a long-time Caro Kann player, black's mistakes were instantly apparent to me even as they were being played.
    Black's mistakes:
Mistake 1: Giving away the light squared bishop for a knight with the Bd7 move thereby making White's light square bishop a powerful attacking piece aimed at the castled black King. Instead of Bd7 a move like Qb6 would have held it for black.
Mistake 2: Because of mistake 1, black was pretty much forced to open the center with the e5 move and isolate the queen pawn. IQP against the bishop pair in that position is a half lost position. Mistake 1 forced black to commit Mistake 2. Without the liberating e5 move, White's kingside attack would have been too much to handle.
Mistake 3: Tactical oversight - allowing white to win a pawn with Bxh7+

@Jazzy Jones StockFish is a machine and plays like a machine, StockFish will hold positions with ease that a human player will struggle in.
If StockFish says something tactical, then it's 100percent accurate. As far as strategy goes you have to take it's suggestions with a grain of salt.
You have to take the Fish with a grain of salt

@Jazzy Jones Those ARE strategic mistakes. Cheers!
