- Ognjacevic vs Tomic, Caro-Kann Defense, Panov-Botvinnik Attack
2018 Zagreb Championship, Round 7
Today I played the final round of the Zagreb Championship. I faced an opponent rated 150 points higher than me. I knew that he plays e4 (I play the Caro-Kann), and I knew that he always plays the Panov-Botvinnik attack which made the preparation relatively straightforward.
I prepared an uncommon line which I’ve never played or faced before; taking on c4 and attacking the bishop with Qc7 after he captures. I thought I had the position well prepared and figured out but I was badly wrong. He made a move which I overlooked completely, and he got a better position right out of the opening.
It got worse though. I played a blunder and he could’ve won easily with precise play. He didn’t play perfectly and he gave me a chance to equalize. I managed and we got an equal middlegame - endgame transition. After a while he even allowed me to stand better with a series of dubious moves, but in the end it was a draw after all. I played the same opponent six months ago and I had +18! He drew. He returned the favor today. - Zábava
I mainly see opening videos on hpy but I saw your game breakdown for the first time and it was amazing.
Your breakdown explores much more possibilities than agadmator.
I liked all those videos, they are great. Good job and don´t be so cruel on yourself.
PS. I know that this battle is lost before hand, but openings are really not that important. Clear example is this game, all could happen later on for both sides xD
Yeah:D Thanks for that you are absolutely correct!
Very nice game and analyzes !
Very nice analysis :)
Blunderfest from both sides.
You are my favorite chess guy / your humility & goodness of heart make you superior.
But, of course, not anymore...
😁
Maybe you could do a video on the game Bilek - Bronstein 1955 ? There’s another very similar game played by Aronian vs Anand in 2015. It’s a very interesting line in Caro-Kann. Very dynamic and double-edged.
At 11:00 after b3 nc3 nxc3 qxa4 doesn't bxa4 win for white?
Pulkit Goyal I was thinking the same thing.
You are correct. I missed that in the game. I hope I'd have seen it if he played b3 though:)
I do understand the joy of drawing against a 200+ higher rated player. In my game, he had a knight and a pawn against my knight. I realized that I had to take the pawn to draw, even if it cost me my knight. I offered my knight a few times to deflect his king. I finally gigged that pawn and it was over.
Nah.. we should win against them:)
At 14:07 Nc4 is better than Nd7 because of the dual threat of Nd2 forking the King and Rook or Nxe5
I want you to get and study this book if it can still be found: One thousand master games by Tartakower.
I will look for it! I believe I might have it actually!
At 11:21 after Rxd7 you just go Qxd7 ;)
At 12:00 after Rxd7 again you have Qxd7
i watched your theory video on botvinnik panov attack and at some point in that video at move 13 you say that all is theory . my question is why u get out of theory at move 6 at your disadvantage in an official game AND home prepared against his opening line? am i missing something here?
You missed a win for black after Kf1 with Nd7. Nc4 was better.
