Actually the Dutch had four golden generations:
    1. 74-80: Cruyff, Neeskens, Rensenbrink, Krol, Van Hanegem, Rep, Van der Kuijlen
    2. 88-94: Gullit, Van Basten, Koeman, Rijkaard, Wouters
    3. 97-2004: Seedorf, Kluivert, Davids, Van der Sar, Bergkamp, Overmars
    4. 2004-2014: Robben, Van Persie, Sneijder, Van der Vaart, Van Nistelrooij, Van Bommel
This generation is not (yet) golden but as a team capable of quite a bit: Van Dijk, Aké, Schouten, Van de Ven, Reijnders, Veerman, Frenkie de Jong, Depay, Zirkzee, Malen, Gakpo, Dumfries, Frimpong... there is a lot of football in this team

It’s a very mediocre squad. They had one good game against Romania. That’s it. They could reach the final, because this half of the draw is weak, but whoever they would face in the final would be strong favorites.

My god I was depressed for years I didn't watch football after that team lost.
Perfectly symetrical. The entire left side was left footed the entire right side right footed. Wim Jonk was a maestro. Philip Cocu played every position from stopper to attack. Most versatile player the game has ever seen. The De Boer twins were magnificent. Edgar Davids was out of this world. 1st half played Brazil off the park. My problem was Kluivert. He had to miss about 10 before he scored 1. And that didn't work when R9 is the opposing striker. 1in1.

Sad that Rene fails to reflect on the team in the late nineties. In 1998 we could have won the WC, but it was an incredibly tough competition with powerful Brazil, Argentina, France... in 2000 out on penalties against Italy in the semis. This team in the Euros 2024 doesn't have the peak quality of previous generations, but I feel the opposition is less now too, so this might be a chance for the Dutch to get lucky and seemingly this is already happening (progressing while 3rd in group, light round of 16 to build confidence, better side of the roster etc). In a final it's anyone's game, it's about getting there and the door is wide open.

The teams need to play the quarterfinals before there is even a chance of a Netherlands-England semi-final. Meulensteen gave a good analysis. As he said, quality Dutch player material has been lacking at times (1980-82, 2006-2008, 2014-18), and Austria showed just a few days ago how the Dutch team can cave under pressure. But in some years the Dutch underperformed because the national team coaches were below par. It is a small country, yet the Dutch football association is reluctant to bring in a foreign coach, or a Dutch coach that doesn't hail from Ajax, Feyenoord or PSV. Danny Blind (Daley Blind's father) is just one example of a coach who had no proven record, but led the national team for quite some time, with disastrous results. How is Koeman doing? I personally think he is a fine coach, but not flawless.

It is so because they can defend and gives up very few chances. Its not pretty but its effective. And they have had a little luck which is needed. I am not saying they will win the trophy but you write off Gareth at your own peril.

They definetly have a better defensive halve versus England and even Spain. Only France could say their defenders are on par with the Netherlands. Also Verbruggen is a great Goalie and has the potential to be as good as Van der Sar.
The midfielders on the other hand should be of a great level with Frenkie De Jong and Koopmeiners. But without those central 2 who bring so much balance, that is their real weak spot.
Attacking halve isn't great either, but with Gakpo and Malen. They again have good potential and both very fast wingers.
