"ITS KRUL FOR NETHERLANDS,ITS CRUEL FOR COSTA RICA"
One of the best commentaries in the World Cup
Yeah took him 7 years to come up with that comment
@@uncleruckus2487 Wdym
@@Victor-07-04 I think he meant that it took 7 years for him to catch what he said
Who is the commentator bro?
@@fiqofficial I think it's Dave Woods who mainly commentates rugby league
Louis van Gaal had plenty of moments of brilliance during that World Cup. That flexible 5-3-2 formation put Spain into a lot of trouble, and then he made a few switches to use Dirk Kuyt and Daryl Janmaat to mark Alexis Sánchez individually against Chile. Then in the Round of 16 against Mexico, he put Huntelaar especially for the penalties, and it came in handy for that infamous Robben dive. And then this happened.
They should of been in that final. And they trashed brazil in the 3rd place game!
No team had even half of the depth in the squad as the dutch had in that WC
Using Kuyt as a defender!!!!
@@dressedtokill192 anyone would have trashed Brazil after the game with Germany, to be fair

An unforgettable night for real. One of the most intense games of WC 2014 for sure!!
For real, I couldn't take my eyes off of the TV, truth be told, I couldn't believe we beat Italy and Uruguay, tied with England, beat Greece in penalties and then took the Netherlands to penalties, we were dreaming pretty big in that world cup, at least our team left with their heads held high knowing they truly gave it their all.

"It's Krul for the Dutch it's cruel for Costa Rica" is one of the coldest on the spot improvisation lines ever!
Not much improvising involved at all, British journalists had had that pun going for as long as Krul played in England. It wasn't like he was the first to realise that Krul sounds like cruel.
Louis Van Gaal didn’t deserve the criticism he got at Man U. The guy’s an ingenious manager and deserves success with the Netherlands
that free kick call....... THE BALLS
@@user-co1gi7yd2r honestly yeah! Absolutely no one saw that coming!
It's so sad he has to go. Despite not having the best team during this world cup, he did what he could, we could've won from Argentina, definitely. I want to see him again during the EC 2024. He is the one who can pull it off with the netherlands. There's no other Dutch trainer.
My opinion he top 3 with Michels and Happel.
Van Gaal vende que juega al fútbol y tira pelotazos
I remember watching this in a local pub. What a great penalty shootout it was
He actually selected a specific penalty killer this time aswell. His name os Andries Noppert, he's 6"6 and plays for a mid table team in the dutch league. He's a penalty specialist, just like Krul. Quality wise, we had atleast 3 better goalkeepers that weren't selected, so the assumption is that this one is only for penalties aswell.
Well he is starting so i guess not huh….. he is the best keeper as well
Hé performed brilliantly yesterday considering this is his national team debut🎉
@@christianj606 Bijlow is the better keeper lol… He plays on a higher level and at a bigger club🤷🏻♂️
@@jemoder196 It's about who has the best form at the moment, so van Gaal chose Noppert
i wonder if with less than 50 league games in your entire career, you can consider someone a specialist. But Van Gaal sure has something with goalkeeper surprises
Krul introduced himself to the world
Was already an EPL keeper
Not really lol he was already one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier league by then

Even though Costa Rica lost and I am Costa Rican, this game is legendary, it was such a tight game, both teams fought to the end to get the win, I could not take my eyes off of the TV, this is the kind of game fans dream of.
Hopefully we will see more of that in this 2022 world cup.
Best of luck to the Netherlands team, or as we call them in Latin America "La Naranja Mecanica" which loosely translates to "The Orange Machine", they are one of the teams I always like to watch in the world cups.
All the best from Holland, my friend. Hope you can celebrate with us!
The more accurate translation would be "The mechanical orange"
Narangi means orange in Hindi language
@@JNitroxx no that would be a direct and nonsensical translation.
7-0 🗿
The Netherlands v Argentian shootout was bizarre for the Dutch. Why Ron Vlaar was the first to kick was beyond me.
I was surprised that the last switch (mere minutes until the penalty shootouts) wasn't to get Cillessen out of there again for Krul. Cillissen ISNT a penalty stopper, already proved by the penalty against Spain, whilst Krul proved himself days before. Instead an attacker got switched out, which wasn't great at all
It was apparently because some players who would usually take the penalties had a lot of stress to take the penalties in the semi final, so Louis van Gaal thought it wise to skip those players for other players who were less stressed out by it.
@@Mr_RiverDwarf almost correct. In reality there were multiple players who were supposed to take penalties that literally refused to take them (because of stress) so he had to pick others
Most likely because a lot of players wouldn't dare to take one + Vlaar played probably his best game ever.
@@gfdx3214 yup, they also should've kept RVP for the shootout.
Love Tim Krul he served us geordies well
That them let him go I didn't understand, he had the best save percentage that season you guys relegated.
I think he was even in the team of the year that year, I know he was there one time when he was at Newcastle.
And Norwich as well. He’s been exceptional for us. Getting us through to the quarter finals in the fa cup against Spurs, on penalty’s as well.
Went back to college after the summer, played fifa with a friend and chose the netherlands. Put krul in goal cuz i was like "ah, just in case it goes to penalties". And it did and i pulled a krul myself by beasting that shootout lol.
You guys play out the pens in fifa? We just restart after extra-time and go golden goal in a new match
@@Inzpyred first time ive ever had a opinion like that where draws dont lead out to pens.

@Jon Snow de jong overrated on fifa rating hes a 94!!! Lol higher than many past netherland legends !! Guy is overrated like most modern netherland olayers are rated higher then 2010 and 2014 . Its crazy and ridiculous. Overrated and declining
Really appreciated the explanation of the distraction tactics and the empiric data on it. Just 10 minutes in the limelight but that's all he needed to be immortalised.
Van Gaal wanted to win in the extra time to avoid penalties. That's why he brought in Huntelaar. He used up all his substitutions and couldn't bring in Krul for the penalties.
@@markusnashorn1145 I'm not sure why more teams do not do this. Honestly, some teams just don't seem to prepare for penalties at all.

If he only didn't refuse to participate in the WC... Imagine how it might have turned out with the penalties... (He refused because he didn't want to do a goalkeeper test/training with van Gaal)
Si hubiera estado en qatar 2022 no tengo dudas que hubieran ganado en los penales. Lamentablemente van gaal cometio el peor error en dejarlo afuera
Tf no subtitles for coach lol
For my old 11 a side team I was part of a penalty shootout. To be honest I wasn't one of the chosen 5 to take a penalty but it ended up going to sudden death. Their keeper was a lot better than ours, he was like early 40's but a real veteran, Allan McGregor type guy so I knew I needed to place the ball with power to beat him. He seemed to know exactly where everyone was going to put their shots so I decided to shoot with my weaker foot since I didn't exactly know which way I would go I figured he probably wouldn't either. It worked, sent him completely the wrong way but I hit the post.
I hate taking penalties.
I was so happy for him when he saved the penalty I cried. What a moment!
no you didn't
As a Costa Rican, I still haven't forgave him
As a dutchy it's understanding 😉. Holland has penalty traumas, too.
Agreed, I remember the next match when they used up all there subs and they were forced to use there original goalie for penalties against Argentina 🇦🇷.
You can't forgive a man for doing his job?
@@realmrpoopybutthole7587 Fútbol-wise don't take it too seriously 😒
@@haashemmalik216 next match was the one against argentina. Once again ended up in penalties but during the match van Gaal used all his subs so he wasn't allowed to sub in krul again. Because of that we were forced to keep cillessen in goal who has actually never stopped a penalty in his career...
Well, as a Greek dude, watching Tim Krul save those penalties made me extremely happy. Costa Rica broke my heart when they beat Greece on penalties so it felt like justice to me when they went out on penalties too.
I watch both of these matches in 2014. I was surprised at the decision of sub-ing a gk. Then as an argentinian fan in the semi I was not hopeful about Romero but I was hopeful because Tom wasn't there.
That Costa Rica team was stuff of dreams
These techniques like trash talk and visual distraction really do work. As GK i once read about it and did same in my school team zonals. I remember i saved 3 penalties. You need to once get in the shooter's head and then watch knees and non striking foot position. Obviously it doesn't always work it's just an approach and not a cheat code cuz at higher levels where there are pros like Ronaldo, Kane they will most likely score.
"it's Krul for Netherland, and Crueler for Costa Rica"
Absolutely beautiful
Ever since I was a kid I would always think of the same thing. You’re allowed 3 goalkeepers and most only ever use 1. Why not have specialist or options
back then only 3 subs were allowed and teams wouldn’t wanna waste one on a gk
@@brandono4248 and I get that. But it’s a shame more coaches didn’t and still don’t do this.
Best thing about this was that Vorm actually had a better penalty record than Krul, van Gaal was playing mind games with Costa Rica and it worked.
Edit: I wrote this comment before watching the video fully, and this fact was mentioned at 2:58
Yet vorm lost against Argentina penaltis
No against argentina it was Cillessen
As a Swansea fan I can tell that Vorm was excellent for us saving penalties, especially in his first season back in 2011-12. Fair credit to van Gaal by fielding him albeit in injury time against Brazil. Michel was a very underrated goalkeeper.
I say vorm and krul still not better than Cilissen hahahaha
@@szewei85 Cillessen is miles ahead in normal time, but he can't save penalties for his life

Krul is the most under appreciated goalkeeper ever. We didn't deserve him.

I remember watching this game as a Mexico fan rooting for Costa Rica and when the change was made I immediately knew something was up
This moment is definitely up there with Italy/France in 2006
I remember that match so well. That performance was on another level
With him they had won the penalty shootout vs argentinia
Twice 😭
I think it's quite remarkable to note the double standard between how a lot of people approach what Krul did on that game compared to what they said about Dibu on the games vs the Netherlands and France. If a European guy does it, then that's perceived as being part of his preparation and his genius. If a South American guy does it, it's viewed in a totally different way.
I remember this moment and the whole build to him arriving at United. Knew as soon as I saw this, he had a master plan here
Bryan Ruiz was phenomenal during the wc2014
We still love him, FC Twente.
I felt bad for him. Being trash talked before missing a penalty against th county where you played your football isn’t very nice.
Legendary moment!
As a Toon fan I was going mental watching this shootout. I was so happy for Krul.
What can we say? Ameobi probably taught him a lot about penalties.
one of the biggest mistakes in sport is not choosing Krul on the shootouts vs Argentina.
He said he already use all the subs
@@laia4862 because in the extra time the coach wasted his last sub in another player instead of krul

I love the way they flip from English to Dutch without any subtitles.
I don't speak dutch
But the dutch speak english .. sorta. 😉
You gotta love how Krul was SO ready for it, and despite feeling his own pressure, he could tell there was more on the costa rica team. He used that brilliantly. Didnt look nervous at all, because the opposition was ten times as nervous.
Brilliant and historic.
Great clip. Just watching it and listening to what they say get me really nervous like being in their positions.
At this time there was only 3 subs, and Van gaal just used 2 during to save Krull for last minute. 10 years have gone and still remember this game, this was the best world cup ever. For me this was the second most dramatic match of the tournament, Uruguay vs Gana still 1st
Too bad these confrontation techniques won't fly today😂 Emi Martinez just changed the rules of the game, quite literally.
The fact that every Dutch player made it to the pitch in that world cup, even the third-choise goalie, is one of my favourite World Cup facts. What a team. My favourite world cup of them all.
That was epic….. one for the books
Iconic World Cup moment
Wow,I remember this game and I was shouting why Krul wasn't used again and I'm Aussie.

Maravillosa jugada :(
HEROICS tim Krul.
This is the first time I’ve every heard Van Gaal, speaking Dutch lol
And it sounds exactly the same as his English, but now it truly is gibberish
@@samoverbeek4778 What? Your name is Overbeek, how does Dutch sound like gibberish to you? Even if you're English but you just happen to have a Dutch last name, which could be the case of course, Dutch shouldn't really sound like gibberish to a native English speaker because the languages are obviously very closely related.
This, the 2006 WC final and the Colombia Vs Argentina that made Emi Martínez famous. Are probably the most famous penalty shootouts ever

Casper Cillessen debut was against Indonesia in FIFA matchday 2013 .
It’s Jasper mister Gor
Polish coach during euro 2016 had a chance to do the same sub in penalty shootout with portugal, he had a keeper who was much more confident in penalties on the bench and still had a sub to make, but didn't.
Tim Krul, best goalkeeper.
Forever etched his name in football folklore… legendary…
Imagine if van Gaal had put Krul in for the penalty shootout against Argentina. That might’ve made the difference for them and we might’ve seen a Germany-Netherlands World Cup finals. While Germany would’ve probably still won, it’s crazy to think that the Dutch came so close in 2 world cups back to back
Honestly Van Persie would've probably would've scored those chances that Higuain missed.
Of course that already happened once before, in the '74 and '78 world cup finals. Incidentally, we lost those finals to Germany and Argentina respectively. History is a funny thing.
dit gaat er weer gebeuren
I never understood why he doesn't do the same in the next game. I find it amazing when it happens and I was sure that it's going to do the same for the next game.
Toon legend!
The best part of this moment was that Cillessen was the first teamplayer whom ran to Krul
The current team has nothing like the quality of yesteryear
Probably the only time in a shootout where the keeper was under as much pressure as the taker!
Awesome video, keep them coming, they bring back all the nostalgic moments from the 1990s
Not the 90's, not even close 😁
I faintly remember something similar happening in the German cup, think it was the Nürnberg coach who brought in the 2nd goalie for the semi-final penalty shootout in '07.
It was awesome. I have a fantastic cat named Jasper Cillessen - He’s oranje and he can’t stop a penalty, either.
