This all started when he wouldn't drop Maguire,it's just carried on. So in actual fact ,all the good work he did at the start of his tenure, bringing the team together, picking in form players ,getting media onside. It's all gone, his tenure is a failure! Any one who says he's the most successful,no one else had 4 goes at it! Sir Bobby and Big Tel would of both won something having 4 cracks at it. We'd of played some football at least

@@stevenbarlow7088technically they had a go and didn’t do as well as Southgate. It’s must be said though, the draws have definitely been favourable but ultimately the football has never been good enough. I acc blame the loss to Italy on Southgate as well because picking an 18 yr old Saka to take the 5th pen is bonkers imo.

Portugal suffered the same fate. When you keep a player like Ronaldo or Kane in the team it is at the detriment to everyone else. The legs have gone, they are not sharp, cannot press, or make runs off defenders. You have no outlet, no control in the final third, no means to wrestle back control. Both Southgate and the Portugal manager have paid the price for blind loyalty to underperforming players. Kane has never been a leader, he is not a winner, and cannot motivate or lead by example. He's not selfless enough to rule himself out like he should have for the good of the team, the same thing happened in the Spurs Champions League final. He never turns up in big games and despite all his England goals, has he scored any iconic ones when we really needed it? Has he scored from nowhere without service? Has he carried the team when we needed him? There is a reason he hasn't won anything or been anywhere in the voting for global sporting awards.

Kane clearly had a foot injury which is why he was avoiding anything that would involve a tackle. But Southgate has always been starstruck and picks the big name players, no matter how out of form they are, which is why new talent (Gordon, Palmer) finds it almost impossible to get into Southgate's team.

When you have a pool of players like England has at their disposal, you have to have the balls to make these decisions man. Everyone can see Kane was busted up, barely running, barely touching the ball. Kane is an elite talent, a guy who can create and score in his sleep.. ain’t calling him trash at all. But he was horrendous this tournament, every game barely touching the ball, dropping deep for now reason instead of stretching the pitch, getting behind , etc. they’re not wrong, can’t press well when you striker is chilling the whole time. I found it funny when England beat Slovakia and Southgate kind of took credit for not taking Kane out when he made the game winning goal. My man got so lucky Jude scored a ridiculous goal to save them. Up to that point, Southgate had made one or two subs I believe . Put saka in at leftback, and let Palmer take his spot on the right… and I think that’s it. It amazes me you have a bench that has so many players that could start for so many teams in the euros… but Southgate can’t make those tough choices, and that ultimately destroys them. You’re barely winning against teams you should be dominating , and you’re doing nothing about changing the players. Kane is awesome in his own right, he was absolutely terrible to watch him just walk and get busted up all tourney . You can see the damage Palmer and olie were doing, how they changed the team to make more decisive decisions and play faster, not watch Kane kind of walk around and ask for the ball in the middle of the park

I don't want to labour the point of agonising over this shambles, most of us saw it coming anyway, England had an exceptionally easy draw through this tournament, Southgate has always stunted the chances of the talent at his disposal, as well as always overloading the team with false 10s, and in a way (a big way) I'm content that Southgate's tedious methods have not been vindicated.
Dean Ashton is right on the ball in this series of discussions. A simple appraisal for this one game (the final) is that Southgate should have more-or-less started with the changes he made in-play and possibly reverted to square none late on if appropriate. Never took the initiative, never asserted our own game, never broke out of second gear, never proactive, and all because Southgate is the FA's absolute dry dream of a PR mannequin.
Also agree somewhat with Adrian's point about cryptic messages. Southgate's too much about awarding himself smug grins for semantic witticisms during media interviews. Go and amuse yourself with a few crossword puzzles, Gareth - let's get a more adventurous manager in who might evoke something of the three lions spirit. Because what we have with Southgate is a parody of that.

totally agree with what Dean said, he lacks courage. Should have taken Kane off in the first half of the first game, he clearly won't have been running in training either, so why start him? I also agree he needs runners or use Watkins for that system, but in that system i also would have gone with Gordon and you can swap Saka/Bowen as need be. Tripps on Left was shockin decision, especially when it changed to back 3, that was crying out for Gordon. I would have swapped Foden for Palmer as a starter and I would have let Bellingham play in the 8. Current setup just left players looking lost. he has to go.

Despite Gareth Southgate leading England to four Top Four finishes (UEFA Euro 2020/21, 2024 Runners-Up, 2018-19 UEFA Nations League Third Place, and 2018 FIFA World Cup Fourth Place), the most of ANY England manager, he's a very conservative, gunshy manager which cost England at least one title since winning the 1966 FIFA World Cup.
Southgate's successor better have the solid structure at the back while maintaining their attacking style and is willing to take risks.
There's an old saying, "Shoot Your Guns. Empty the Chambers. What you have left, let it fly! Why? Because if you lose this final and you still have bullets left in the chamber, you're going to use one on yourself."
Southgate did it twice when he was runner-up in UEFA Euro 2020/21 and 2024.
The lack of a scoring the second goal first doomed England yet again.
