  • In this episode of Tough Rules & Cool Interactions, I will be answering a subscriber requested question, it will be an expansion upon things I've covered a lot so far in the steps to casting a spell but not this specifically. It's a nice short episode today since I'm a little under the weather and on a lot of meds, but also because I have been crazy addicted to Helldivers 2 lately. That game is amazing.

    I just love how something that we do all the time in magic, casting spells, a thing that always goes so smooth 99.9999999999% of the time, that there is so much actual complexity going on under the hood and there are crazy things that can erupt like this that throw a wrench in the engine.

      It is pretty crazy. We shortcut so much of what we do in the game, rightfully so or else games would take so much longer than they already do, and it can be easy to forget just how much is shortcutted.

    Saw in the description you have been playing Helldivers 2. That game is so cool. Been watching videos of it and decided to pick it up. Can't stop playing it.

      Yup, hyper addicted to it. Some of the most fun I've had in a game in a long time. Not to say there haven't been a lot of great games to come out, there have been plenty, but to the level of fun I'm having in HD2... wow this game is fantastic.

    I was more thinking about what happens different creature loses a characteristic during the resolution of a spell. Like say you target psychosis crawler with a spell that cares about its power but draws you cards (just as an example: draw two cards, then destroy target creature with power 3 or less). What would happen?

    • @ThisIsACommanderChannel
      @ThisIsACommanderChannel  Před 5 měsíci +1

      So like, if you used Foul Play which says "Destroy target creature with power 2 or less. Investigate." To target my Crawler when I have 2 cards in hand, it is a legal target upon cast, but if in response I do something to draw cards to get my Crawler to bring a 3+ power creature, then when the Foul Play tries to resolve it will check the legality of the target again and see that it isn't legal. Because it was the only target, the whole spell would then fail to resolve. So my Crawler wouldn't be destroyed nor would you get to Investigate from the Foul Play. I hope that answers the question you had, let me know if not.

      @@ThisIsACommanderChannel I understand that but what about a situation where the spell goes to resolve and *during* the resolution the size changes. I don't know if this fits but say I use Exchange of Words to give Tarmogoyf Narset, Enlightened Exile's textbox. It attacks and exiles a card, but by exiling the card it shrinks the goyf to the point where the target is illegal, what happens?
      That example isn't perfect because the target has already been exiled but what about a situation where another card is exiled during resolution (I don't know how).

      @ThisIsACommanderChannel  Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@MakeVarahHappen The game only checks for legality twice, once the spell or ability goes to the stack to be cast/activated/triggered, and then again when it begins to resolve. So once it has started to resolve it will no longer continue to check the legality of the target.

      Ha! Oh yeah, I'm doing just fine. Just a combination of 2 things really, my business that I own got very, very busy recently because my competitor closed down recently and so I've picked up some of their business, and then the other thing is that Helldivers 2 released and that game has awakened things in me. I have been playing it some much of my freetime in the last couple of weeks. I will do my best to work on a video for this week though, we got a lot of cards recently spoiled so maybe one of them has some cool interactions.
