Rockstar Games had only explored relatively rudimentary modes of multiplayer in its games before the advent of Red Dead Redemption in 2010. The American West-set adventure, with its cooperative and competitive offerings, engendered the development studio’s first step into the wild west of expansive online gameplay. It made sense, then, that Grand Theft Auto 5’s multiplayer suite, GTA Online, allowed the team to unfurl its wings and do so in a way that generated multimillion-dollar earnings via in-game purchasing. But GTA Online didn’t achieve incredible success overnight. Several years and various post-launch updates would land before the experience hit its stride with 2015’s Heists update. The hope was that Rockstar would afford Red Dead Redemption 2’s online component the same room to grow.
Red Dead Online entered beta weeks after the prequel’s story campaign arrived in stores. It almost instantly became mired in controversy, too, mostly because of balancing issues with the in-game economy. Rockstar addressed the community’s concerns with haste, leading many to believe the move marked the start of a cadence that would always see the developer quickly respond to player feedback. This rapport between the production team and its Red Dead Online user base lasted for only so long, however.
A frustrated community felt the need to beg for meaningful content updates within two years of the multiplayer mode’s release. And after about three years, pleas for Rockstar to “Save Red Dead Online” had turned into a trending hashtag that even caught the attention of executives at Red Dead publisher Take-Two Interactive. Unfortunately, these noble efforts proved for naught, since, once again, the future of the western-themed franchise found itself playing second fiddle to the creation of new Grand Theft Auto content.
This is the tragedy of Red Dead Online.

RockStar no longer cares about single-player games, they are going full On-line. They've even admitted this with GTA6, where they say they will release the game in an unfinished state and that the rest will be released periodically On-line. Their attitude is, "Why make multiple millions with single-player content, when we (they) can make BILLIONS pushing always On-line content?" RockStar can easily do both but they won't. Like how much money one needs? Just make back your expenses and be happy. But with enough devotion and love for your work, a good product will sell good, so anything over your expenses is a serious win. You don't need thousands percent over that, 30% is quite enough.
Don't fucking spend so much on marketing... It should be about 3-5%, but anyway not more than 10% of the development expense. But nowadays these AAA games seem to have marketing budgets in the same ranges as the whole development budget, and that's just crazy.

@@somnorila9913 these companies are no longer comprised of the people who created the original games we love due to the passion they had for them. Videogames started making so much money that it attracted the typical leeches and vultures that swoop into an area when it becomes lucrative - and that is that type of ilk that has little or no passion at all for anything other than making as much money as they can, to feed off something until they dry it completely. Then they leave the dried corpse behind and move to something else.
It will never happen of course, but gamers should stop buying and supporting this big companies. Specially because they are absolutely run and controlled by these vampires, who push them to keep growing and growing (to get as much profit as possible in the short run, even if it will run the company to the ground eventually, making thousands of people redundant in the process) instead of building a sustainable profit and focus on developing good products connected to a healthy community (which is a long run endeavour - that does not fit the money-hungry executives who want their millions upon millions right now).
DICE, Rockstar and so many others are not made by the passionate teams of other times, their games are now done by executive decisions, created by committee, products developed like in a factory, where every risk is minimised as much as possible and consequently every game is about how much they can deliver of the same that has been done before, while putting the least amount of effort and maximising how much they can make people pay more and more.

It’s a shame that when it comes to (most) video game companies nowadays, money will always trump creativity. Amazing video, as always.
Edit: Lol, at no point did I say making money off video games was a bad thing. Obviously, as a business, these companies need money to operate and feed families, but most big name companies are so focused on making money for the executive team/shareholders that it becomes more important than making a finished, well fleshed out game upon release. As a beta veteran, who held out hope for something for some time, I still feel the weight of sadness that this game has left in me, I had made so many friends, that I no longer speak with because we don't play any other mutual games. For me, the death of RDO was long, hard, and truly a disappointment. One small nugget tho, after the GTA6 leaks, I couldn't help but feel just a little better. That these people that actively killed the game, would experience arguably one the greatest content leaks in recent memory, felt cathartic.

This one is especially tragic for me, this game was a surprisingly meaningful experience in my gaming life.
I first played RDR2 when it released on PC, and I jumped right into multiplayer even though I was the only one of my friends with the game, so I was hitting the dusty trails on my lonesome. Then the pandemic hit, and everyone started isolating and everything was closed. RDR Online turned into my "outside simulator" for a few months there, and I convinced one of my friends to start playing with me (secretly to use him as "cheap labor" for the new in-game businesses I could finally afford).
I finally had awesome clothes, custom guns, businesses, was dripping in gold and money, and my friend was on a much easier path to success than I had to endure. We convinced 2 more of our friends to start playing, right around the point where my first posse member realized I was always getting the larger cuts as the business owner. Now he had worked his way to some regard of his own, and we had two more fresh "employees", but now we were a real gang. It was honestly just so much fun getting in cowboy-character with the boys, I still can't stop saying "howdy" as my go to greeting!
I actually had a lot of pleasant memories despite the feeling of the time. But the writing was on the wall when the updates slowed to an AGONIZING crawl, and a game we unexpectedly put tons of hours into just completely stopped being worth playing without ANY endgame or goal or direction or reward or even just a property or a wagon! We all had daily streaks in the high 50s minimum, I peaked at around 80 days. WE WERE COWBOYS! How do you have such a satisfying hook and screw it up?

I tried rdr2 online for the first time this year, and immediately found many friendly players who would help me out in missions together and introducing me to the game - however, I quickly noticed just how expensive everything is in the game, cant afford horses, guns, and everything is locked behind gold bars, and the coolest cosmetics are only available if you pay with real money. This kinda discouraged me, having no goals to work towards to. I tried to follow the main story missions, which was kinda entertaining, but not interesting enough to keep me in

I remember i was in a gang with a few of my cousins, 7-8 man group. We sent a letter to rockstar with a huge list of demands, i mean HUGE. Talking actually ideas for camps, expanding gangs, expanding ways to make money and all, if anything we thought of the roles before it actually came out, but obviously had a better layout. L.I.T Gang was the gang name. Almost none of the demands we wanted were met /: some of them actually coincidentally made it into the game, but i wish out letter got noticed and made them realize people really wanted better for online from the beginning.

I've owned RDR2 since release day and have beaten it upwards of a dozen times. Yet, I have not opened multiplayer a single time. I haven't even thought to open it and totally forgot it was even there until I heard about R* stopping updates for it. I'm mostly disappointed that they did not do a single thing with the single player campaign at all after release. No new content whatsoever. I was really looking forward to a potential Undead Nightmare 2 which never came. It's strange because the game felt like so much hard work, dedication and passion was put into it. Then after release it was entirely abandoned. So strange.

GTA and Red Dead online should be "free/fee to play" wholly separate products from the single-player games. There should also be single-player and online dedicated teams for both games (4 total) that strictly work on either single-player or online, never to pull anyone to the detriment of any project.

awesome video as always, it was a rough start for sure.
loved the single player game, it was an incredible step forward for open world RPG's, most immersive game ive ever played.
Red dead online 2 is wonderful to play with friends, sure, it could have had a more balanced economy. But imo if you are focussed on that, you need some friends. Me and my friends just explored the world, RP'd our cowboys and fucking had a good time. some people are just miserable man. try be positive.
