As Rockstar Games entered the seventh generation of video game consoles, the acclaimed publisher slowly began to trim down and reinvent its catalogue. Rather than providing a wide variety of experiences that each tried to do one or two things well, Rockstar started focusing on leveraging the Grand Theft Auto series’ popularity and appeal, and offering a much smaller pool of games that featured similarly open-ended designs. And none of the company’s franchises were more primed to be reinvented in this manner than Red Dead.
2004’s Red Dead Revolver had been far from perfect. Its decent gunplay and atmosphere had been hamstrung by a middling cast of characters and story, resulting in an experience that wasn’t quite on the same level with the rest of Rockstar’s properties. Yet its setting had always struck those involved in its creation as the perfect environment to flesh out into a sandbox, and a great foil to the urban sprawl featured in the rest of Rockstar’s franchises.
The process of translating this into an actual game would prove tumultuous for Rockstar San Diego, pushing them to the brink as they struggled to recreate the American Frontier more completely and authentically than any other studio before it. But when their work finally concluded, the world would be treated to what would become one of the most beloved video games of its generation - and an equally excellent expansion.
This is the history of Red Dead Redemption.

My dad loved westerns, so he loved watching me play this game. It's a shame he didn't live to see the sequel. He liked John, I'm sure he would have liked Arthur
He did dude, he is in your heart! :)
Im pretty sure he was sitting by watching you play through the game.
I always think the same whenever something Star Wars related comes out.
My dad loved the original trilogy, he had the original VHS boxset and copies of the unedited cgi mess that Lucus decided to put out.
I wonder what he would think of the new movies and games, I know he'd love EA's take on the Battlefront series, because he enjoyed seeing the epic battles in the prequel trilogy and when he would watch gameplay of the original Battlefront titles.
@@mtnd02.06 My dad used to watch me play the original Battlefront 2 and Knights of the Old Republic. He took me and my cousin to see Revenge of the Sith after I watched the originals on VHS and instantly became a fan. Another fond memory with him
Yo I totally feel that. I remember my dad walking by and excitedly asking which movie i was watching while i played rdr. He always loved westerns and i picked up that love from him. He also passed before rdr2 could come out. I'm sure both our dads are watching us, though
Same man, same. My dad wasn't much of a gamer besides the Atari 2600 he had in college. He loved the original Red Dead Redemption, and would often comment on how detailed the environment was and how much research must've gone into it. I lost my dad back in 2015, and also wish he could've lived to see Red Dead Redemption 2, and watched me play it.
Before this game, I was legit bored to death by western movies. Now I see the respect the old west deserves.
I also used to find the game icon on the PS3's homescreen and fall asleep to that song it played on the splash-screen. Same with The Saboteur.
The Saboteur is underrated. Great game.
I finished the game for the first time a couple of days ago, I'm not the guy who would cry that easily but the end of the game really made me struggle to keep my tears held.
I need the red dead 2 documentary plz
lethal
i feel like seeing a National Geographic documentary about gaming........very high level content my good sir, keep up the nice work , we need it....
Why did you cut and paste my comment about my facebook page?
Never forget GUN. Red Dead Redemption is better, but GUN still deserves our respect.
Not really, no
That's not much of an achievement though
gun was the best first horse riding game i had on ps2. will never forget
@@LURKTec Stop being a bitch dude, gun was a really good video game.
For a western it was perfect I loved it from the map to the gunplay to the exploration and missions, it was such a great game just too shallow with a lot of the mechanics especially AI.
RDR tho. God damn.
Red Dead Revolver and Redemption? Dude you are awesome.
The revolver video was a reupload
The table tennis part with the intense RDR music cracked me up. Good job
i wasn;t ready for it lol
This Red Dead Redemption Will always be my favorite
I said the same thing and people scoffed at me. Red dead redemption was my first Xbox 360 game as I spent my whole childhood on ps2 until than. The graphics were awesome and the story was movie like.
Probably my favorite game of all time. While RDR2 is better in many ways and a wonderful game in it's own right, few games captured my heart and imagination like Red Dead Redemption.
Al Capwned Word my nigga. RDR made me think and feel some mature shit. silenced the giddy young prick in my mind. also nice name lol Al Capwned
All ways except gameplay
@nikos 90 except that it's not. You obviously never played much red dead redemption 1 in free aim. The difference would be obvious.
@nikos 90 the controls were handled poorly and the shooting was not designed for free aim. It was the most hold your hand rockstar title to date.

Thank for doing this video guys. Redemption is my favorite game, it has such a huge place in my heart. It came out at the perfect time and did so many things well, and I still am amazed with it when I play.
Undead Nightmare is one of the best expansions/dlc in gaming history.
Yeah, it was also a fine addition to Multiplayer, specially horde mode, where you had to survive waves of enemies with your teammates. Good times:)
3:10 this still crack me up.
Best song for a table tennis EVER!!!!
Another video? My god, its a miracle!
Thank you for these. Very enjoyable.
I'm, I don't know, 3 minutes in. And you already have my subscription and that bell icon has been clicked. I absolutely love channels like this, and you're easily amongst the best of them. Excellent work, sir 👍
I look forward to yall's video! Good Stuff as always
2 in what, 2 days?
GVMERS working hard I see! Much appreciated,
always look forward to the next one.
I think both are reuploads because of copyright strikes.
Love this CZcams series!
Red Dead Revolver is still my favorite
No other game captures the spaghetti western feel
This channel always delivers.
Another homerun love this channel!
These videos are so good
The only thing that could possibly take away from what Red Dead Redemption 1 accomplished is how much its sequel managed to improve on the foundation it laid out, and even with that considered 1 is still one of the best games I've ever played.
Rdr1 is infinitely better than rdr2 could ever hope to be but I will say Arthur Morgan is a fantastic character and is equally compelling as John was in RDR1
this game truly was a good measurement of what the ps3 and 360 were capable of
And RDR2 is, but for the Xbox One and PS4
@Cypher k
Best videogame documentary series around!
Awesome work! I consider RDR one of my all time favorite games
One of the best games from the last generation
And it still holds up fantastically.
I would still buy it again on SWITCH if they release
Great info
Wow what an amazing video
I love the content this channel puts out, it always feels like I'm watching a documentary.
I was wondering if they would do,
"The Rise & Fall of World War 3"
The FPS which was supposed to rival Call of Duty and Battlefield.
There was so much going for the game, but it ultimately failed.
Very sad to see it in the current state, as I was looking forward to seeing what it could become.
So much potential wasted.
2 videos in a row???? Today is a good day.
Trying a shorter format I see. I really like the longer, detailed videos.
Regardless, I hope it works out for you guys!
Keep up the awesome work of bringing quality content to YT!
I really like both.
@@BackAlleyKnifeFighter yeah, me too
Best gaming docs on YT.
If only I would thumb this comment x100
Red Dead Redemption is still a top-tier game with a great story, memorable characters, and a satisfying open-world action adventure that oozes with heart and grit.
Love the series! I would love to see this concept with Sims, Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed. Keep up the good work!
Can't wait for your take on RDR 2
I never got to play the games before red dead redemption. But man o man rockstar made one hell of a game with red dead redemption I loved the zombie dlc. Hopefully they will put zombies in red dead 2. Great video.
This is one of the greatest game that will never be forgotten!
Would have been nice to experience this masterpiece on PC back in then. Well... Maybe one day.
Perfect experience emulated from X360/PS3 is not that far off.
@@raresmacovei8382 30 fps is a no-no
@@klurikon3004 Who cares about 30 fps when the game is red dead redemption?
@@rabidrabids5348 I care and I am still waiting either for rd1 or rd2 pc port
@@klurikon3004 the xenia (currently still in progress) actually allows you to remove the capped frame rate and get higher than 30fps.only problem is,its still a work in progress.
Honestly gun was the main reason I picked up red dead redemption. Such an over looked game
Never played Revolver or Redemption but we did play Undead Nightmare which is such an awesome game. Loved the ability to capture the four horses of the apocalypse.
I love red dead redemption it’s such a awesome game and it’s sequel is really awesome and badass
great video as always... How about a history of the F.E.A.R franchise?
Arthur Morgan: "Howdy Partner!"
John Marston: "That's what I wanted."
Red Harlow: "You ain't my problem..."
DUTCH: I HAVE A PLAN!
The Weppe were is your god damn faith Arthur
All we need is money
You forgot Uncle's lumbago
Why would anyone thumbs down this video? It was great.
Can you do Onimusha series? Thanks~ Love your videos!!!!
2:55 cant believe how amazing it still looks
Still probably my most favourite game of all time. A full rounded emotional rollercoster of quality story telling and engaging gameplay with masterfuly crafted world and atmosphere.
The sequel is absolutely amazing too.
It looks like Red Dead Redemption did a lot to improve on Revolver. It interesting to look at the roots of a company that size
It sure does. I remember when i first played Revolver and Red Dead came out and the whole experience was changed for me. Rockstar is the best company ever.
Back to back!!!!
how did i miss this in my feed :( im so late. Turning on the notification
History of Max Payne !!!!!!
Very very nice
Red Dead Redemption encapsulates why I love gaming. I'm confident that no other game will give me what that title did. I thought perhaps RDR2 might've. The phenomenal aesthetics, superb writing, and fantastic sound design of RDR2 captivated me. I let myself get lost in the environment and took my time playing the story and fell in love with Arthur Morgan as a protagonist. I appreciate all the ways R* displays their ability to keep the bar set very high in the open world genre. Frankly, it's unprecedented. I like great video games in totality. Single player AND multi player. I know this is where some gamers differ, but for me, I play the story and take it all in but I love multi-player, specifically open world. That's where RDR2 failed me (and continues to do so), in so many ways. Far too many to get into here. I waited six long years for this title and I still can't wrap my head around how R* got RDO so wrong. It's difficult for me to recognize the talent of every R* studio's genius in this RDO monstrosity. I love this franchise and while I enjoy I the GTA franchise as it pertains to storylines, I can't stand it's multi-player. RDO is deep fried in GTAO and it's something I can't and don't appreciate. I know we have the big update coming this month and that will bring another major element that will keep me in RDR MP instead of RDO. I believe it's being referred to as offensive/defensive mode but passive mode of any kind doesn't belong anywhere near the RDR franchise, imo. I think it's an atrocity that R* is inserting it in this title. RDR multi-player was as close to perfect as it got for me. Player engagement was high and consistent, which is a stark contrast to RDO which has very low player engagement. I spent two solid years in that free roam and even today, It's still the best multi-player experience I've had in my span of gaming. I still try to play it a couple of times a week. It would've been a longer standing mode if it weren't for players rampantly cheating without consequence. So, the enjoyment of MP, how MP activities, bounties, and PvP options were implimented, and a superior soundtrack is why RDR reigns supreme for me. Just my two cents.
You're like my favorite museum
Gun (2004) was so cool!
So redemption is an redemption for rockstar as an redemption to revolver
I love the scenery of the original Red Dead Redemption, absolutely beautiful.
I will always love the original Red Dead Redemption, so many memories. While I adore Red Dead 2, the first was so surreal back then.
I could have sworn this video and the Red Dead Revolver video were released awhile ago? Is this a reupload?
I literally just watched the Red Dead Revolver one this morning because this didn't exist yet wtf
GUN: Farewell my son. *cough* Dies
Red Dead Redemption: I'll make you proud Father!
One word. 'Bombastic'
I'm still waiting for the next Red Dead my PC is ready
Can you guys do a rise and fall of the Jak and Daxter series
I subscribed just because of the narrator
Same. He doesn't have the typical annoying CZcamsr voice. I feel like I'm watching a PBS documentary.
Do a history on Age of Empires franchise
(Age of Empires 1, Age of Empires : Definitive Edition, Age of Empires 2, Conqueror's Expansion, Forgotten Kingdoms, Age of Empires 2 HD, Age of Empires 3, Warrior's Chief, Asian Dynasties, Age of Mythology, Titans Expansion, Tales of the Dragon, Age of Empires 4, Age of Empires Online, Age of Empires mobile game for Nokia, etc)
Mate i know every one will skip over this comment but i adore your Content and your voice and your production quality and i could go on for days!
You guys gotta do:
-The History of Mortal Kombat
-The Rise and Fall of Mass Effect
-The History of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
-History of Resident Evil
Rise and Fall of Legacy of Kain please!
The history of Syphon Filter would be a nice video to watch.
You read my mind.
We need a remaster of this on the current gen consoles
...And the next Red Dead that did arrive, was worth every year.
My favorite RDR mission is definitely Assault on Fort Mercer
About a year ago was able to get RDR1 Game of the year edition (story + undead nightmare) sealed for $10 at a Walmart. Had heard about it, and wanted to try it before RDR2. Holy cow this game hold up very well in my opinion! Plus that story! You get very attached to John and his family! The game was so good! One of my favorites!
I was playing RDR 2 while I was listening to this
If GTA4 had zombies on the New York map I would have never stopped playing it. Especially on PC with mods. It would be awesome.
I must say red dead has aged pretty well. Still looks great.
I'm still waiting for Red Dead Redemption to come to PC, though something tells me I will continue to wait for a very long time. I was hoping there would be some hint here, as to why Rockstar would give up the millions of dollars they could receive from a PC version.
I'm still waiting for the next Red Dead to arrive ...
(pc gamer)
I feel bad for you. I hope RDR2 does come out to PC because I'd make the best PC I can to enjoy the again with higher quality and put in mods.
Should have titled the video Red Dead: A Redemption
I really and truly can't decide whether I like red Dead Redemption 1 or 2 better
Both are feckin good
Still waiting on that Legacy of Kain video
Bought a ps3 months ago for some good old single player games
Playing rdr right, what a masterpiece
Your videos are so awesome! Is there another one coming for Red Dead Redemption 2?
I still remeber all the hours I put into playing red dead online that used to be so fun now the new one is just money grabbing
you need to talk about the most mysterious game of rockstar.

I wonder if we will ever see a "Rise and Fall of Loot Boxes."
Bring this game and its sequel to the PC already goddamnit
Can you make documentary "Rise and Fall of WW2 gaming trend"
Ahh,yeah...another history lesson worth watching.
i feel youve re uploaded this what's going on im experiencing a huge ammount of deja vu
He did upload a video about Red Dead as a whole, but glanced over them just before RDR2's release. But, now he's talking about them individually.
Hi I will pay you two dollars a day to narrate my life with that buttery voice you got there
They should do a Max Payne doc.
In my opinion Red dead Redemption 1 is better than gta.Your videos are great.Continue the good work. Also I would like a history for Fumito Ueda games Ico,Sotc and The last guatdian...3 of the best and most epic fames I have ever experienced.
Rdr2 incoming I'm feeling it
hey guys, can you do a rise and fall of the Armored Core series please ??, it would be awesome
It's a shame that this game never came out on PC...I don't know why rockstar hates pc customers.
Well, PC help them to get where they are so why bother with a market that does not pay for exclusives. Shame as there would be a massive amount of $$$ to make. Unless they release it on Epic "fail" Store then most of us would not be bothered :D
Not because they hate PC customers, but it is mostly because the development of Red Dead was a pain in the ass that Porting to PC was suicide.
@Mr Jim Van Kilgore Reeealy? 😈 You mean by the lines of "there is shortage of canvas material"? If they wanted or more likely be allowed to ported RDR to PC they would do so ages ago. You realise we talking about multi million company right? Also did you hear about "universal computation"? Seriously you people should stop coming with stupid arse excuses why it cannot be done and start asking questions why it wasn't done yet? It's fairly simple. Imo
A) they are prevented to do so by exclusivity contract.
B) They cannot be asked in which case they just taking dump on players that are unwilling to waste several $$$ on specialised hardware for one game.
Don't be stupid! Every application can be ported on other system if said system have equal or greater hardware specifications. We are talking 7th gen consoles (9years old) to today PC. Get real fellas. Tis ain't about technical issues.
@@TOKOLOSE It's not that it's impossible...the problem is that RDR was developed when RAGE was in a transitional state between two major versions. It's chock a block full of platform specific hacks to (just about) get it working on PS3 and 360. It's literally held together with duct tape and hopes and dreams. It's 100% possible to port it to PC but it's never going to happen because so much work would have to be done in order to get the engine into an acceptable state that it's not financially worth it. They'd be better off bringing it all over to a newer version of RAGE...but that ain't cheap either.
@Mr Jim Van Kilgore just read your statement again please before you embarrass your self even more.
