The graphical leap between the seventh and eighth console generations proved momentous. Though titles such as The Last of Us pushed the older hardware to its limits, the first showing of something like Killzone: Shadow Fall running on PlayStation 4 demonstrated how the boost in memory and raw processing power could enhance interactive entertainment. From environments replete with higher-quality details to real-time lighting effects that dynamically elevated the digital world, the PS4 and Xbox One bridged the gap to realism that had long eluded video games. Early in the generation, no game came quite as close to bordering the line of authenticity as Ready at Dawn’s The Order: 1886.
Ready at Dawn often described The Order as the culmination of everything it had learned in its 10-plus year history. In developing God of War projects for the PSP, the studio endeavored to squeeze every ounce of power possible out of the handheld. The same rules applied when it came time to produce a new IP for PS4. As a result, many dubbed The Order: 1886 the most impressive-looking game on console upon its February 2015 release, thanks in no small part to the proprietary RAD Engine 4.0-world-class technology which ensured even the smallest of details presented themselves in character models, environments, and the various objects complementing both.
However, an obsessive emphasis on the minutiae came at a cost to the macro, so much so that the experience ran less than 10 hours in length for the average player. News of the short campaign made the rounds ahead of launch, rousing discourse about the value of full-priced games and stifling much of the hype surrounding The Order: 1886. Unfortunately, that one blow almost guaranteed Ready at Dawn would never get to complete its alternate history epic.
This is the tragedy of The Order: 1886.

Really wish they would go back and explore this IP again. The Order had a really great premise and world; steampunk Knights of The Round Table with Nikola Tesla as their quatermaster. It's a shame that the game failed, I understand why as the complaints regarding the gameplay are well warranted. Really hope someday Sony revisit it again.

This game was released in a time when the hate towards Sony, from the Xbox fanboys and the US gaming press was so big, that I wonder how the playstation managed to survive.
After the combat x360 vs ps3, everybody seemed to hate Sony.
No way Sony could release a good exclusive title...
I remember reading most ps4 reviews. Not only the ps4 was more powerful in paper, but in reality, it managed to destroy the x1. launch games could easily run at 1080p on the ps4, while the same game would only run at 900p, or even 720p. The kinekt2 was a joke. The voice control was a joke. It was much less powerful. And many other disadvantages. But despite that, the US reviews would still give a higher score/review to the x1. After the x360 success, no way the ps4 could win. So they would use everything, to destroy the ps4... like the ps4 launch titles, where every single exclusive title got destroyed by the press.
Kill zone shadow fall, with its incredible graphics ? Low scores. Reasons ? Crap like 'ohhh, killzone SF plays like other killzone games'. Really ? Should it play as halo, instead ?
Knack, with a great, lovely story, great characters, great old school gameplay . The red reviewers absolutely hated it. They thought they would finish it in 20 minutes, to quickly post their review, but instead, with an old-school gameplay, they kept dying.. and dying... and n dying... thousands of times.
      Etc etc etc.
Then, The order 1886 was announced. 6 months before release, there were already hundreds of doom and gloom articles about the game. 10 reasons why it will flop. 12 reasons why it will be bad. Etc etc.
Suddenly, the QTE became a 3rd world problem. All the negative reviews were already written months before release. The journalists wouldn't even play the game. Their crap review was ready, 4 months in advance. And of course, when the game was out, it got destroyed by the press. Ah, those quick time events !!!
It didn't matter what game it was, any ps4 exclusive had to be destroyed.

The first big red flag was the announcement that The Order 1886, which was by all accounts looking to be Sony's steampunk Gears of War, wouldn't have a co-op mode.
For all the talk about the underwhelming gameplay, nobody mentions how garbage the script is. The setting and the lore are admittedly fantastic, and I wish we would've gotten anything else, even a tie-in comic book, that would explore it further. Most underrated game. It gets shot on for being a short tech demo but it had all the right stuff just launched too soon

I enjoyed that game, but it could've been so much more. The game is good, the let down was the fact that it had so much more potential, specially being a new IP.

      That was my problem.
The QTE felt not like game mechanics but rather something put into a cut scene to look like a game play. The stealth was abomination with its binary state - you are seen you repeat the sequence. The mechanics like fighting Lycans were close to none, stand in one place roll when attacked enemy goes away rinse and repeat 3 to 4 hits to kill the enemy.
Story was nice but it ended when others games would use the cliffhanger in the mid section of the game and continued.
Played it but to me it was at best OK game and I bought it for 1/3 the price.
And I have to say I play a lot of shorter games 3 to 5 hours long which I like way much more.

It just felt like they wanted to make a movie more than they wanted to make a game. So much of the actual gameplay felt like an afterthought or begrudging (though not unpolished) inclusion. It's especially frustrating given the interesting setting and fantastic visuals. I would love for it to be explored again in the future, but with gameplay and engagement as a much stronger focus.

This game, is what brought me back to my roots in console gaming, I loved it, I didn’t care about the length of the game. I was so invested into the world of this IP, the moment you realize Vampires are being shipped, blew my mind at the time. I wanted and still do want a sequel to this amazing IP. Definitely gets a 70-80 in my eyes.

I found it a great game besides the cliffhanger ending and would love to have more from this IP. The world building is amazing and the experience was more that of Uncharted than a regular FPS.
Sadly it was badly received at its time. So the cliffhanger will never be resolved.

I absolutely loved this game, the amount of detail the artist put into everything was insane this is the game that pushed me to become a material artist for games and arch viz, while I'm sad the game did not catch much success I am so grateful I got to play and look at all beautiful work the team did. There are legit points in the game where it goes from cinematic to gameplay and i sat there for 5 mins thinking the cinematic was still going. If you can I highly suggest giving this game a try.

I love how the guy even tries to slag off _Call of Duty 4_ by comparing its supposedly 4-hour campaign to _The Order 1886's._
there seems to be something missing, here, buddy. was there not something _Else_ that you could do in _Modern Warfare...?_
wasn't there, like, some feature to that game that _The Order 1886_ DIDN'T have?
something that maybe could have enchanced the replay-ability?
yes. that's right. you know what I'm talking about.
_Call of Duty: Modern Warfare_ also had a TRAINING course in addition to its campaign. that's what kept people going back, even to this day.
but seriously, I love how the guy tries to allay some of the glaring blame for _The Order 1886_ off on _Modern Warfare's_ "4 hour" campaign, when _Modern Warfare_ also happened to have a vast multiplayer theater that people are still playing today.

    • @DP12321

Yeah and games like Bioshock 2 added multiplayer which no one plays to this day. Multiplayer may have helped, or it just may have reduced the overall quality of the game. If anything, a survival mode or challenges a la Days Gone would be ideal.

  • @phant0mdummy
    @phant0mdummy Před rokem +1

I'm calling it, and I have been for a while now:
There will come a day where you see many "we were wrong about The Order..."
Or "TO1886 - AN UNDERAPPRECIATED GEM"
I'm basing this on the steady decline of gaming over the last decade. Eventually we will reach a place where people miss compact games that had one buy in price and delivered what you expected.
