Well clone wars is a bit of an analogy to WW1, before they had this whole “fighting with guns” tactics known.
This actually makes sense
but at the same time that doesn't make much sense, the Republic is not engaging enemies in open fields, and as the republic engages the CIS on multiple worlds many of these worlds would be urban areas and cities, it is still a little baffling that no Urban combat tactics are used by the Republic.
another great video idea for the series "familarities in Star Wars"
Blasters have been in universe for at least 3000 years by the time of this story, it's just poor writing/ not focusing on realism over rule of cool. Plenty of other EU authors wrote/directed insanely detailed and intelligent battles and fight scenes taking into account not only the vast weapons and cultures, but also the how said things would work with realistic physics etc applied which stood above and beyond scenes in the rest of the canon entries.
Lol, they actually had figured it out. The problem was they were not prepared for the power of artillery, most ww1 soldiersin battle died from that. And the commanders obviously didnt cared.
Real Life Military : *Actual Tactics That Can Be Use Logically.*
Star Wars Tactics : *Anyway I Started Blasting *PEW PEW.*
Fun fact:
Jedi using bad tactics was actually canon in EU, and it was explained that last war they participated in was few million years earlier, and everyone was jedi, so charging like that was actually useful.
But it's not when your soldiers are normal people.
When all the combatants have lightsabers, there's no way to really do much damage without getting close to the enemy. But when the majority of both sides are fighting with blasters, the commanders need to *think with blasters*. Unfortunately, the Jedi "generals" are probably the least experienced of them all when it comes to blaster combat.

@@InventorZahran they fight like the beginning of WW1 the whole time - marching battalions into machine gun fire.
Asking warrior monks to lead battalion size formations with zero prior experience was always a bad idea lol
@@bemusedalligator Except at that point you had outdated doctrines and veteran generals who were raised during the time of Napoleon or something. Heck the Crimea War even showed how obsolete old warfare tactics and strategy is with new technology. There was no real way to clear enemy fortifications, or more so, without bombing their trench lines with artillery, even then, tunnels and bunkers, they built them well enough or maybe artillery just wasn't super accurate enough to the point somehow they didn't manage to soften the enemy position because if the enemy can get back out of their tunnels or bunkers and set-up their MGs once more and fire upon the charging wave I have a feeling people need to use more trench raid or mass bombing strategies because human wave tactics was just so poorly done.
At least WW2 had a different approach to it, granted they had better vehicles available unlike WW1 where cars were not made for the muddy and barren wastes of the front, and tanks were prone to breaking down before they even reached the front. But there had to be a better way to use infantry than just throw them into the line of fire. What kind of doctrine was that?!

@@Zakatak-mf4iq
Exactly.
Yea they physically couldn’t make it to cover and making himself a smaller target when surrounded like that wouldn’t have done jackshit
This is why I loved the Republic Commando and Rogue Squadron novels.
Neither are perfect, but both series had authors who did TONS of research into things like actual dogfighting, martial arts, and touching into the basics of how actual special-forces type squads operate; or at least how they would if they were genetically enhanced and encased in tank-like Katarn armor or were a Force-sensitive pilot who's spent his entire life behind the stick of an X-wing.
As well as them having to deal with various “civvies.” Some of my *favorite* books!
That’s why clone trooper resentment is a point made in the novels. Jedi forget they are leading non Jedi, and take heavy casualties as a result.
yeah exactly, before that their last actual war was 3000 years prior and their armies were mostly composed of jedis, where, yeah, rushing is the best thing to do
I feel you should be fair in some cases. Commander Thorn and his squad were caught out in the open by Separatist forces who overwhelmed them. And as for the clip with Domino Squad, the point is that they don’t work well together and thus fail. When they do work together is probably one of the best scenes with military tactics, making use of cover and backing each other up instead of always just charging ahead.
Thorne was one of the few who did well he first and foremost made sure admirals was secure then tried to get to cover
hmmm. in that case your best bet is to push out of the encirclement and into the enemy lines. ironically one of the few times where clones *don't* blindly charge is when it would be best advisable. even if there was no hope for a break-out by charging the enemy you force the encirclers to hold fire or (in the case of droids) cause friendly fire casualties.
siting still in an ever shrinking circle of your dying men with no cover is stupid. you charge the line in the direction you either A. think will be easiest to break B. Is the way to your evac/objective or C. likely to cause the enemy the most damage. you only ever hold if you are in a defensible position and have reinforcements in the area.
even in ancient times an encirclement was death. you broke out or died.
@@MFenix206 They were on a landing platform. Clone: “I’m not trying to do what makes sense, I’m trying to do what looks cool.”
I love that the battle droids, who are repurposed basic exposable sentries, use more tactics than the clones, elite drugged up super soldiers. It goes to show who are the real professionals in the war, especially when you consider that even the CIS at it's weakest near the end of the war after Utapau should have feasibly won the conflict, and that isn't including their whole army when you consider most of it was far away from actual combat.
That's where Palpatine's "secret plot" really comes into play. If it was a straight, fair fight without 1 man playing both sides, the CIS curb stomps the Republic. Absolutely no contest
well to be fair they are literally droids so they most likely have military tactics embedded into their programming without need for training
I don't think traditional fencing could apply to lighsaber combat, keeping in mind a lightsaber can cut anything without applying to much force, giving the posibility to perform more close maneuvers
Considering how none of the weight is on the blade itself but only a small fraction on the handle, the strength you put into it likely shouldn't affect your strikes at all. It's like trying to hit someone with a helium balloon but even worse
Fencing absolutely would apply to lightsabers, thrust and stabs would be way safer than coming in close because you just need to poke them with the plasma rod to do damage not slice them in half
Actually, there's been a recent lightsaber mechanic revealed; the crystals inside have a gyroscopic kind of nature (mando/bobf dark saber scenes) so you have to move "with" it, as opposed to just swinging it
So not necessarily like a regular sword
@@brendanhilgeman1395 The darksaber is very different from regular lightsabers, as seen in mando/bobf dark saber scenes. Also in Rebels, novels, and TCW animated series

But I thought about it, and realized that would explain why jedi aren't using lightsabers like you "should" use a sword (like a rapier or broadsword) and more like how we see it with all the twirls and whatnot
Made sense in my mind that all lightsabers have that gyroscopic effect, with the dark saber being much more pissy about it. Fits in with the whole use the force thing
lmao this is so good bruh, star wars does everything the opposite way
7:26 we can’t ignore Tank 2’s gunner right here man. Who needs to pick a good spot when your gunner is shooting down missiles.
That gunner needs a promotion.
It's always bothered me how neither side used tactics and it was always just "the good guys win because they're the good guys" even though they are surrounded in an open terrain and the enemy is battle droids who in theory should have no trouble aiming their blasters. It just makes for poor fight scenes where the good guys come out on top despite being actually braindead.
Well, I think that is the way it is because the droids and clones were fabricated by the same person: Palpatine. The Republic should win in order to do order 66 and control the galaxy more easily
It is a fake war to serve a higher purpose
So basically every action movie Hollywood has ever made?
I love how you put in the General Skywalker from Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes, it had me laughing 😂

The sword theories can not be applied on a force sensitive lightsword wielder.
But yes, you can be disappointed how the training on Kamino failed the clone troopers. The Kaminoans had extraordinary scientific knowledge on cloning, but might have not been that much knowledgeable about military tactics.
but maybe the troops are only as good as their commanding officer… the just act as anakin would
I'd argue that realistic lightsaber fighting would probably be similar to modern sportsfencing. So you'd mostly hold it in one hand and do a lot of thrusting motions, something where a curved grip would actually help a lot. That being said using it like a one and a half handed sword like the video suggests would still be a thousand times more effective than whatever they're doing in the movies.
@@meteorsr2339 to be fair the prequels actually have developed and proven to be effective techniques as co pared to the ot and the sequels which are much less refined
That's why Mandalorian warriors were hired to train some of the clone troopers. However, clone armor is not Beskar, so any traditional Mandalorian tactics that depend on that level of armor protection just won't work so well for the clones.
@@SkiRacingOz Any martial arts instructor I ever heard of takes pot shots at prequels fencing with all the spinning and useless fluff. Now don't get me wrong, I take the artistry of highly choreographed lightsabre dueling in the prequels over a dry, soulless, brainless and frothing bashing of blades in gritty realistic settings, any day.
Tbf, the type of fighting done in the Clone Wars is completely different than modern warfare. The clones and jedi are fighting a massive army of robots that don't need to take cover or use conventional tactics. This means the Republic isn't afforded the luxury of purely long range fighting or trench stalemates. These positions just become overrun. The Clone tactics are more like those of ancient spartans or cavalry: fire from concealment until the moment when you can rush in and meet the enemy toe to toe and hold the line. On top of this, not only are the clones enhanced soldiers physically and psychologically (less fear, and better physical conditioning than basic human soldiers), they also have armor (which even shown in some of these clips can keep a clone fighting after taking multiple hits). AND they have bacta and other advanced forms of medical treatment. With advanced armor and medical treatment, the threat of getting hit once and bleeding out (the laser guns also cauterize a lot of the bleeding) is severely diminished and allows for soldiers to be trained more to "get out there, fight like hell, take a a few rounds, and hope your team advances enough to pull you back and heal you". Imagine the tactics of the Red Army soldiers of ww2... but now they have penicillin, compression bandages, Kevlar and the most advanced battle rifles of the time
I don't feel that any detail you highlighted makes modern tactics less relevant...if anything, they are more relevant than ever in this setting. on paper, superior tactics, training, and coordination is what allowed the clones to compete with the far more numerous droids. "rushing in" and "meeting the enemy toe to toe" and "holding the line" is exactly what the droids are good at. unfortunately, most visual depictions of the clone wars present droids and clones are basically interchangeable.
Also, the presence of armor, bacta, and prosthesis just brings even MORE value to a successful withdraw, as casualties have a very high rate of returning to the front lines at full functionality. If your goal is just advance until you win or lose, then anytime you lose, the clone troopers will be lost to a man...and again, on paper, this shouldn't allow the clone wars to last very long as the droids HEAVILY outnumber the clones.
The thing is, the clone army has the motive, means, and opportunity to operate like a modern army on steroids, and the fact that their opponents are incapable of employing tactics beyond "ancient spartans" should leave clone commanders salivating. unfortunately, competence happens off-screen in the star wars universe.
So next time a clone clears a room they should run right in instead of using actual breaching tactics to clear a room without casualties. Also some of these tactics would still be used in ww2, like overwatch and vehicle placement.
And in case of using Z-6 rotary blaster cannon, I don't think you could do that much while using this
Modern tactics are the results of continuous research into how to best defeat the enemy. Just because the enemy comprise of mindless droids does not justify abandoning sound tactics. That's like the Americans not sending airplanes into Afghanistan because the enemy did not have an airforce. Instead they should send their armed toyotas into the enemy caves and eliminate them as equals!
The clones would suffer significantly less and reap significantly more if they employed modern tactics, at the very least. Clones were thinking creatures, and that's what made them superior to droids. Otherwise, how could a human ever match the potential of a recyclable, expendable killing machine?
The 'hold the line' and 'rush in' doctrine died with the advent of the machine gun. It doesn't matter if you have ten thousand men running towards your enemy when the enemy has ten machine guns with a thousand rounds of ammo. Star Wars warfare was always in this silly spot where automatic weapons exist, but strategy never seemed to evolve past Civil-war era line formations. The only thing which kept the battles from being over in a few minutes as they realistically would is the fact no one can seem to aim.
My favorite tactic was spinning, that’s a good trick
Real life tactics can easily improve a show by alot.

I like how in many of these situations they actually pay for not using proper tactics; like the writers seemingly knew they were leaving themselves open in most of these instances.

Rules of nature!
the thing about lightsabers is you can do lots of damage with little force, thats why you dont really need to thrust or cut
True, also the entire face of a lightsaber is a "blade", without being as heavy as a broadsword. So the fighting style is more like a mixture of broadsword meets Katana
@@noted_insolence1894 why would either broadsword or katana have anything to do with the statement "the entire face of the lightsaber is a 'blade'"?
yeah, but the closest thing in real life to meeting those conditions is olympic fencing...and everyone kinda hates watching that. if you had weightless blades and only required a touch to "win", then its gonna look like olympic fencing...which probably isn't going to capture the imagination of a modern audience.
I wouldn't mind seeing that though. cuz both combatants can see a little bit in the future and have force augmented strength, speed, and acrobatic capability. we see quite a bit of lunging and some limited jumping in olympic fencing, its possible that a lightsaber fight that is choreographed as a "perfect" fencing bout could actually look decent...but at the end of the day, the wushu-inspired fights of the prequels did a great job of capturing people's imaginations.
@@bonzwah1 The weapon that Christopher Lee is showing off is a thrusting weapon, not a slashing weapon or a hacking weapon. Having a light (literally) sword that doesn't need to come down at any one angle with a particular amount of sweep or force to cut through objects, or similarly to parry or block other lightsabers, allows you combine styles that are best suited for varying types of sword.....you wouldn't put all your weight into a hacking movement with a Katana, and you wouldn't make balanced sweeping cuts with a broadsword. You also wouldn't wind up and spin the sword with either of these weapons as you would with a sabre while mounted or dismounted. A lightsaber theoretically allows for the use of all of these movements and they are just as efficient as any of the other movements. Try foil fencing with saber tactics and, as much you may like the feel of it, you won't score any points. Try lunging and thrusting with a sabre, and again, you're diarmed or dead. A lightsaber lets you do pretty much any movement that is most efficient without need to worry about how the face of the weapon is landing
@@noted_insolence1894 fair points. sounds to me, though, that you are suggesting that the swordplay would be like a mixture of sabre and foil. Going only off of your own points, I still feel that saying the swordplay would be an intersection of broadsword and katana misses the point entirely (I was unable to resist putting the pun in there).
but more seriously, the fact that the blades are light and that a touch is all that is required are sort of the the defining feature of the lightsaber. i feel that what you were saying about using a foil with sabre tactics is far more compelling that your assertion about broadswords and katanas. it seems to me, that all you need to do, is imagine what would happen if you COULD score points in foil with sabre tactics, and then you would have a "realistic" depiction of lightsaber fencing.

It makes no sense for Ahsoka to do it either. Only works for that videogame character and for animation
@@moscanaveia realistically, it’s a useless close combat stance. It only looks cool. That’s all it has in it. Yes, technically speaking, Ashoka using the reverse grip wouldn’t work in real life. @@jacqueslin8178 I bet nobody would look cool irl trying to reverse grip. And no, the only reason Ahsoka can pull off reverse gripping is because she is one of the main characters in the show, so plot armour

1. It’s easy to think of these tactics and practise them, but when you are being fired at by hundreds of murder robots, you kinda panic.
2. Commander Thorn went out like a king, screw tactics
I doubt the canonical explanation was "the clone troopers, literally bred to be the perfect soldiers, panicked and forgot their training". If modern day soldiers are capable of doing it, then the clone army, as presented, should be able to do it but even better.

To be fair, the lightsaber forms work because lightsabers are omnidirectional and cut by burning, not momentum.
Yet all the seven forms of lightsabre combat take momentum into account. The discussions of Makashi (Dooku's form) versus Djem So (Anakin's form) instantly spring to mind
@@moscanaveia that is more about overcoming your opponent's guards or slipping past them. an actual strike doesn't need much momentum at all to kill.
I still laugh at that one scene in the last season of Clone Wars, where windu and his clone troops are standing up on huge crates with zero cover, the droids are standing stock still right in front of them, both sides are firing at each other at point blank range with zero attempts to dodge or even move in any way, and both sides still miss 99% of their shots

Stormtroopers be like
there were areas where irl practice couldn't be put to use which shows that the jedi don't know that cover helps the everyday troop but they don't understand that because they have mobile cover called a light saber
Even if the Republic and the Galaxy hadn't any wars in large scale (galaxy wide) obviously there would have been other wars on a planetary scale. Presumably the history of previous wars would have been saved and archived. As such the Republic and any military force would have broad access of military strategy and tactics across species and ideological boundaries.

Thorn is just too badass for that rules
To be fair the rules of engagement of a Jedi r not the same as a trooper, it's like comparing captain America and a soldier 👍
The last bit is just BS.
The first was an all-out attack on the retreating/regrouping seperatists. Ofcourse the AT-TE wont have cover or enough mobility to escape a missle, no matter its surroundings.
The second AT-TE was in a convoy going somewhere, being ambushed, they were not engaging the enemy but merely just traveling. They cant react to something they do not see coming or plan ahead for it as it would make movement nearly impossible when you have to considered that the enemy ambushes you from behind every brush
Nope they were not just travelling but directly attacking grievous
@@TheRogueOneYT then point one is the same for point two. If they are having an all-out attack on grievous, which it did not seem like, maybe a chase, they would also not look for cover or have time to get to a better position as the enemy could retreat and capturing/killing him would be a gigantic win to the GAR
Let's be honest no one in the Rebublic army had a clue what they were doing.
The most realistic part is the absolute failure of clone rifle qualification…wait a minute?
AKCHYUAALLYY
the clones rifles linked to their helmet HUDs, they just had to point their rifle at a bad guy and they’d be dead on. So firing for the hip is perfectly viable for them. But they are trained to be able to fire accurately even without their helmets assistance. The Clones were pretty much playing with aimbot, to the point that Clones joked they only existed because their helmets couldn’t pull the trigger.
But then you think, the helmet could pull the trigger if they were droids with the same technology inside their heads.

Maybe that appeals to some people, but I wish the majority of Star Wars was just a bit smarter and more competently written.
