SURPRISED by SERBIA! 🇷🇸 - First time in BELGRADE (Europe's HIDDEN GEM)

- In this week's travel vlog we visit the capital of Serbia, Belgrade, for the first time. We were completely surprised by Serbia and think it's definitely one of Europe's hidden gems.
We start off our day in Belgrade at Republic Square where we drink a glass of hot rakija. After strolling down Knez Mihailova Street we eat a slice of Pizza topped with salad dressing from the popular shop called Bucko Pizza. We then make a stop at St. Michael's Cathedral and visit the Belgrade Fortress where we take in the beautiful view of the Danube river. At Beograd Café we try some traditional Serbian coffee and a local alcohol called Pelinkovac. Since there are popcorn stands everywhere on the streets, we grab a box of popcorn, followed by some Serbian cookies from the farmers market. After a couple cocktails at Kultura Bar we finally end the day with dinner at a restaurant called Cevaplija where we eat delicious Serbian foods such as Gibanica and grilled meat with dips.

It's not so strange....if you were more informed and not so ignorant....you would know that the Serbian New Year is on January 13
Good video, but I have one correction where you say that the salad is Bulgarian. The salad is from MACEDONIA (MACEDONIA).
@@kirepesov9999 Thank you! Someone else commented and told us it's Serbian. 😂
The origin appears to be up to debate, according to what we've seen on the internet. All we know is that it's really delicious, no matter where it's from. 😁

I went to Serbia in winter. On January 2024. Beograd is so beautiful . So many beautiful building. On the 2nd day it was snowed. It was magical esp iin Kalemegdan Park. Everything covered by snow. I sat on bench and had a best view of Danube River. It so amazing because i never see snow before. We went to Nikola Tesla Museum, Saint Sava. Republic Square..Belgrade fortress and Kalemegdan. Hope someday i can visit Belgrade again but in summer. Greeting from.Indonesia
I think Belgrade would have been lovely with snow but this year in January it was quite warm. It would definitely be the perfect place to experience snow for the first time. We want to go back to Serbia during summer, too. And at the end of the year we actually plan on slowly making our way to Asia. Indonesia is definitely in our plans! 😊 We've been to Bali before but this time we want to visit Jakarta and other places 🙂
@@wherearewe-yt. Wow i feel lucky to experience snow in Belgrade then. Thanks god 😁. Btw, i live in Sorong in West Papua Province.. Why dont u try go to my city ? We have Raja Ampat here. Many tourist go to Raja Ampat for snorkeling and diving
I just looked up Raja Ampat on Google and it looks so beautiful! 😍 I'd love to visit that region! We actually can't wait to go back to visit Asia. We spent 2.5 years traveling South East Asia before covid and it was wonderful. 😊
@@wherearewe-yt you will enjoy Raja Ampat for sure.. if u need some information how to get there..lemme know.😊
You were lucky as it hasn’t been snowing much during the last winters, usually only couple of days in the whole winter and this year it was like two days in January and one day in February. On the mountains ofc more, but not in Belgrade.
In Serbia, we like to eat and drink well. I met Italians who are delighted with pizza, pasta and espresso in Belgrade. Everything we make from food, we make well, not only local and traditional specialties. I am glad that you liked Belgrade and come to us again!
We ate so much food in Serbia and everything was so delicious! We also noticed that there were so many pizza restaurants everywhere, which we didn't expect. We concluded "Serbians must really love pizza!", haha. Our next video coming out next week is actually a food tour that we did in Belgrade and Novi Sad, so make sure to check it out 😊. We'll definitely be back in Serbia in the future. We didn't get to see Niš and other areas this time. Thanks for watching! Hvala!
@@wherearewe-yt When you go south to Nis, be sure to go to Pirot. Pirot also has a superb grill ( kafana Ladna voda), the best pizza in Serbia and beyond.( pizzeria Mamma Rossa🍕). What is also important for Pirot are two unique delicacies from that region peglana kobasica (ironed sausage) and pirotski kačkavalj (Pirot cheese🧀). I hope that you will come to Serbia again soon and visit the south and east of Serbia, which are truly special. All your shows were great and you are very pleasant.
Christmas in Serbia is Jan 7th and the 'Serbian New Year' on Jan 14th is also celebrated with Epiphany and St. John the Baptist Slava day close behind. By and large, the winter holiday season is considered finished on Saint Sava day which is I believe the 27th.
Yeah, someone else explained it to us earlier! Thanks for sharing and explaining. We arrived on the 25th of January. I'm glad we were able to catch a little glimpse of what Christmas in Serbia would look like. People really go all out! Restaurants all over the city had painted windows and decorations for Christmas. It was nice to see.
@@wherearewe-yt People are not in hurry to take off decorations, it does not bother anyone, decorations are still making things prettier even if Christmas have passed (still think that Christmas tree should be gone). Looking at those decorations is good way to turn your attention away from the cold. And during those time we have many "slava's" family gatherings, it's a celebration of the notable ancestor that every household has, so decorations play a part in that too, we have never ending cycle of socializing and celebrations during the winter.
@@Zemlja_je_ravna We enjoyed having the decorations at around. It made for a nice atmosphere! And of course, we were glad to try hot rakija as well.
@@wherearewe-yt they didn't have time to move the Christmas tree, you know...hangover xD
@@Anto01897 Hahaha. I'm surprised we survived Serbia without a hangover. At least five or six different types of rakija, and multiple different brands of Serbian beers. Worth it. 😂
Welcome to Serbia.

I was in Belgrade for a month last summer! It was hot as h*ll, but it was one of the coolest cities I've ever been in. Amazing food and welcoming people. 😊

We loved it! We also loved the food. Just released our food video an hour ago. Check it out!
christmas in serbia is on january 7th, because we celebrate by the julian calender.
That makes a lot more sense! We were wondering why almost every shop in the city was totally decorated with Christmas decorations. We were happy to be able to experience the remnants of it, and try that hot rakija. What is traditionally eaten at Christmas time in Serbia? We should have grabbed something from one of the vendors, but we already had a massive list of things we wanted to try. 😅
We have two New Years, second one is on 13 January..
That's interesting. It never even occurred to us that there's another calendar in Serbia. You're lucky, you get to party twice, haha. Do you celebrate both times the same way or are there different traditions?

In generally all Balkan countries are beautiful, great landscapes and nice people.. Belgrade is beautiful, and to me favorites are Novi Sad and Bor, beautiful architechture in NS ,and nature and lakes in Bor... greets from 🇭🇷 ..🙃
Our next video is actually from Novi Sad (followed by Subotica)! We haven't been to Bor though. We hope to see more of the nature in the future. This trip was only cities, unfortunately.
Thanks for watching!
@@wherearewe-yt When you go to Bor (Eastern Serbia) be sure to visit Golubačka and Ramska fortresses on the Danube and the Rajačke pivnice (Rajacke wine cellar🍷). It would be good to visit the city of Smederevo, which is close to Belgrade, there is a huge medieval fortress in Smederevo. That fortress is the second largest plain fortress in the whole of Europe.

Welcome to Serbia. I'm glad you enjoy it here. About Rakija, yes some people drink a shot in the morning with coffee. One you tried is cooked Rakija, as we cook wine also in the winter. Try regular from plum or apricot. Salad you eat with the meat, not before. Bucko means Chubby.
Oooooh. With coffee. That would be nice. This cooked version was a great way to start a cold day.
We have a food video coming up next, where we try rakija again. By the end of the trip we actually tried six different varieties. We had grape, pear, quince, raspberry, honey and apricot! The strength seemed to vary quite significantly. 😂
You found BUCKO 😀 , oh man , it brings memories
It was so much better than we thought! We wanted to go back again to try with a different salad, but we ran out of time. Would be perfect after a few drinks. 😵💫😂

Chop salad is a traditional dish of Balkan (mainly Serbian, Bulgarian, Macedonian and Turkish) cuisine.
Shop salad was named after the Shops, who lived in the territory of western Bulgaria, southeastern Serbia and North Macedonia.[1] The salad consists of tomatoes, cucumbers, raw or roasted peppers, onions, parsley, salt, lemon juice or vinegar, oil and fatty salty cheese. Similar to it is Serbian salad, which omits cheese.
Šopi i danas žive tamo gde su od pamtiveka živeli i legende kažu da je bog stvorio Šope pa je po uzoru na njih stvori i ostali čoveci.

@@wherearewe-yt True, I am from Slovenia, at the edge of Balkan but I know Serbian food very well because we lived in the same country (Yugoslavia) for many years. If you ask me, Serbian cousine is the second best of the world, I prefer Italian food , but Serbian is very close. .

We went to Maribor and Ptuj. If you stick around, those videos will probably be out in another 4-5 weeks. We had lots of great food here as well. It certainly felt like a mix of Italian, Balkan, and even Austrian food that we've had in the past (well, because we were already in the Styria region, but in Graz). It was actually difficult to find straight up "Slovenian" restaurants here, but we did our best! Haha.
I head to Belgrade next month I am excited to explore 🇷🇸
It was a great city. Enjoy!
Yes you guess right, Bucko Pizza has become popular as drunk snack during crazy party nights, nothing really special, ordinary street pizza, but they are the first who started putting the toping, that was originally dressing for hot sandwiches in Belgrade, on top and started a trend that is now more then 30 years old.
Hahaha. Knew it. Before we went there, I watched a Serbian CZcams video to try and figure out the proper pronunciation of Bucko. They were comparing Bucko, with Poncho pizza in Belgrade. We liked it much more than we thought we would. We would have liked to try another place, but we ran out of time. On a sandwich also sounds great!
Yes, sandwich and pizza street places were very popular at late 80’s and beginning of 90’s as street food. Sandwiches similar to one you have in North America, subway type, with different ingredients and with salads dressing as extra. Urban legend is that some drunk dudes asked for pizza to be topped with salad dressing in the early morning hours and that people then started asking for that more and more, and word come out that in Bucko they are gonna put on top of pizza if you ask for it and that keeps Bucko working for all this years, cause sandwich/pizza places are closing and opening fast and frequently, but since they are OG, they are working all this years.
Hope you had good time in Serbia, and come again on summer.
Најлепша земља у Европи, Свети Сава је основао

A great vlog guys 😊 We never knew about the pizza with the sauce but it looks interesting! The Gibanica looks delicious (we tried this during our food tour) but it didn't look like this!

Najbolja hrana na balkanu ti je u Nisu, dodjite snimite proverite.Najbolji burek najbolji rostilj i ljubazni ljudi.
Everyone keeps saying that the food in Nis is great 🙂. This makes us very curious. We'll probably be back in the summer to check out the south of Serbia 😊
@@wherearewe-yt Bravo 👏👏👌👌👌👏👏👏

Србија је веома лепа и добра, дочекује мисионаре из разних земаља и такође је дивна, да.
It was beautiful, and we had a great time while we were there. 😃
Srbija je prelepa zemlja ❤
Belgrade brought you a lot of previews... enjoy 🍻🍺
Thanks! 😊
Go to Hram svetog save, go tu Nikola Tesla museum and go to a basketball match in the Belgrade Arena (KK Partizan or KK Crvena Zvezda) and finaly walk around the new Beograd na vodi ❤
We will have to do some of these things next time. The museum was on the list, but we ran out of time! We will be back in Serbia in the future. Though next time, we would like to explore the south. We have a few more northern videos coming soon. 😄
Welcome
Thanks!
Nice video❤❤❤
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you ❤
And come back again ❤😊
Hvala! We plan to. We've had lots of great suggestions for round two. 😃
go to the Milan butcher's restaurant in Novi Belgrade to try meat specialties and Serbian salads....😉
We will have to try that next time! We have a food video coming up next with a bunch of the places we were able to visit. 🇷🇸

We love when we not on radar
I know we are tourists ourselves, but we often tend to enjoy places that may not be as "popular" of tourist destinations as others. Over tourism tends to spoil many capital cities. Belgrade didn't feel that way at all. At the same time, we felt very welcomed in Serbia while we were there.
Not being on the radar just makes it that much sweeter when you visit a place you don't know much about, and it ends up being a gem.

I lived in Belgrade for a year and it was just incredible. Highly recommend!
We definitely enjoyed ourselves! It's a great city, with a lot of incredible food.
Thank you! Welcome! 😊❤

Sopska isn't Bulgarian. It's a salad by Sop people which live on the border between Serbia and Bulgaria. Salad is popular in both countries.
Bulgarians certainly consider it Bulgarian. It's one of their national dishes - and we have read stories stating that it was made to represent the colors of the Bulgarin flag.
Many Serbians consider it Serbian, as we have seen from the comments. Personally, we don't care where it's from. It's delicious either way. 😃
SHOPS (Šopovi) are Serbian etnic derivat, from S/E Serbia. Pruf is so colled Serbian SLAVA, vich Šopovi have, like Serbs from everywhere. They are NOT Bulgarians. Another etnic group from same part of Serbia ,s.c.THORLAKS (Torlaci) are different story, Serbs call them Bulgarians...They dont have SLAVA in native region. What is SLAVA ask Mr. Google heim!!!
thanks for coming and driving up the prices in belgrade. i'm glad we can become a cheap thrill for your one-in-10.000 youtube vlogs so you can show off your lifestyle.
Prices are going up everywhere unfortunately, even where we live. I think tourism actually helps bring money into a country. We're also budget travelers, so not much of a lifestyle to show off. Maybe one day 😅😊 Thanks for watching!
I’m glad you enjoyed and also noticed how friendly people are here. I’m a Finn and came to Belgrade with my hubs during our nomad years and ended up living here for years. We never planned staying but we just felt like home since the beginning and never left. We are soon leaving though, for personal reasons, and I almost started crying seeing all the familiar places even though I’m still here.
We had a great time here.
Totally get it. We've been together over ten years, and are soon leaving Budapest for good. We have moved around and lived in 9 countries over 3 continents. Budapest is the ONLY city we lived in, left, and then moved back to for a second time. It's the city we've spent by far the most time in together. But now it's time for us to move on.
At least you can always go back to visit when you miss it!
@@wherearewe-yt oh I sooo know ❤️ It’s like the heart is left in pieces all around the world and they are so many places to miss so badly. But then there is always that one place that feels like home. Despite missing all the other places it’s still a different feeling. I feel sad leaving, but I know it’s also for good as otherwise we would stay here for rest of our lives. It’s time to move on and as you said, it’s always possible to return.
Good luck on your travels and have a good journey to your home Budapest 💜
BGD is the BEST! 🥰🫶
It's a great city, for sure! We really enjoyed it. 😃
It would be called Bulgarian salad and not Šopska salad if it was really Bulgarian.
In Romania it actually seems to be called Bulgarian salad. No matter the name or where it's from, it's very tasty regardless and we'll keep eating it whenever we are in the Balkans 😊
There is a story that salad was invented by Bulgarian cook for their president or king in way to present Bulgarian flag : white, green and red. But Shopi, by whom salad is named, are some kind special ethnicity that live in both countries. Simply said no body should care about who invented it or by whom is named just eat it and enjoy
Thanks for coming in Serbia, you are always welcome and yes our English is very good bc we study English in school . Feel like at home when you guys come again.
Lots of European students study English (especially the younger generation) - but the level of English spoken in Seria was quite high in comparison to some other places we've been. We used to live in Spain, and given that it's one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, the level of English is surprisingly low. It was much easier for us to learn some Spanish and communicate that way.
As I'm sure you heard, we struggled with most words in Serbian - so it was a nice surprise that we could communicate so easily in English! There's was only one instance where there was an issue - but you can see that in the Novi Sas video coming up. 😅
Thanks for watching!
@@wherearewe-yt One of the reasons why a lot of people in Serbia can speak some basic English is that we dont dub the series from US, but we have subtitles. So basically a lot of people learn the language with the TV series's and movies.
@@aleksandars.7782 Anja learned English by watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! 🧛♂️
@@wherearewe-yt I learned German and English by just watching television, when i was a child. I think it's the fastest and most fun way for a child to learn a new language.
@@aleksandars.7782 That's awesome. I (Brandon) am not particularly good at picking up other languages, especially compared to Anja..but we always do our best to pronounce words properly, and try and Google them beforehand to avoid making asses out of ourselves. Even then, as soon as the camera is on, you sometimes forget everything. 😂
