Camino De Santiago Day 20: Hornillos del Camino to Castrojeriz, Spain

Another hot flash dinner moment tonight. 2nd in a row. I'm thinking opening up to vulnerability and just plain overheating are the cause.
Today we hiked the meseta again. I'm actually loving this area. My feet, not so much. My left foot especially is giving me a lot of pain. I'm taping it with sport's tape, also taking ibuprofen, and rubbing my feet with ointment for muscle pain. Unfortunately, we ran out of ibuprofen today. And it's Sunday. In Spain. So, everything is closed.
One thing I'm really happy I brought with us and have been using daily is the sewing kit size scissors. They are great for cutting many things including moleskin and bangs that get in your face across the meseta.
Our plan to leave at 6:30 am was delayed by a lightening storm and heavy rain. We were not able to head out until 7:30. The breeze sustained us until about 10:30. Many fellow pilgrims have decided to rent bikes in this section of the meseta but I'm grateful we are walking it.
The almost 8 mile stretch between Hornillos del Camino and Hontanas felt remote with no water or food in sight. Eventually, we reached a bench by a memorial. We removed our hiking shoes to let our screaming feet air out and shared a bocadillo with fresh tomato and onion we purchased the day prior. The woman in the super mercado actually cut the onion in half for us and sold us half an onion since we did not want to carry the extra weight.
A young pilgrim from Ecuador joined us on the bench, we offered her some food, and she used my handy scissors to cut some moleskin. She left quickly as she was hiking 38 km today!!
Shortly thereafter, we arrived in Hontanas. And it felt like someone turned on the oven. We enjoyed a second breakfast and then came rain and lightening several hours before the forecast predicted.
We quickly made our way to Castrojeriz. Rain I can handle but lightening? Not so much.
Our albergue in Castrojeriz was bright and inviting. The host name, Dani. Camino magic strikes again. Also the cutest, cuddle cat named Ari. Her yawn spoke to my soul.
After the regular routine of shower and laundry we enjoyed a hot bowl of the best ramen soup and a pitcher of ice cold sangria.
At this point, Andre wanted to explore the town further and my feet were killing me, so he visited the church and met a pilgrim from Norway while I rested. This pilgrim was doing a documentary on the Camino and would later interview Andre. Andre is currently giving autographs for anyone who is interested.
The Asian inspired dinner was a welcome change to our daily meal. We enjoyed a shared table with fellow pilgrims from Florida, Norway, Germany, South Korea, and Switzerland. We began sharing our reasons for being here, my hot flash commenced, I excused myself to the bathroom (twice) and then finally laughed and addressed the obvious. It was refreshing to be honest and also to open up about why I'm here.
The Camino really does provide. Opening up to people that were total strangers 30 minutes earlier is part of the magic.
Tomorrow, we hope to leave early as the temperature goes into the mid 90's. And in the meseta, it feels hotter. And so the hot flashes are loving this.
I end this post with Andre and his cerveza. He enjoyed many cervezas this evening. He also shared our story and his love for Danielle and myself. He may or may not be included in the the final cut of the documentary but I'm very grateful he took the lead tonight.

On a sidenote, we both have trekker tans. From the sock line to the thigh, to the backpack chest strap. If you've ever hiked long distance, you know what I'm talking about.

Oh boy - you show the rain/clouds at the start of your video - on this day I awoke a day ahead of you in Castrojeriz to a massive hail and thunder & lightning storm, which delayed everyone's departure by an hour or so. The heatwave over the next week or more was unanticipated and deadly. Getting to Leon was all I could think about
Yes, we were delayed as well because of the storm. It was lightening like crazy and so scary for anyone who headed out early. And the heatwave was scary and deadly as well, we had one point in Sahagun where I really was worried we were overheating. It was crazy!!

I did the Camino Frances from SJPP this past spring and have enjoyed your videos- they’ve brought back great memories. I’m about to make a video of my pics for family & friends and wanted to ask you where you’ve found the music for yours… I like the classic rock songs you’ve chosen as well as their instrumental versions. Did you have to purchase them? Do you have to pay royalties? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thx!!
I'm thrilled you are enjoying them! I've just been using an Mp3 converter and finding music we enjoy, mainly finding the fingerstyle guitar version of the song. I hope that helps! Will you be posting your videos? Look forward to seeing them.
