Camino De Santiago Day 22: Boadilla del Camino to Carrion de los Condes, Spain
    25 km (15.53 miles)
We have found that 12 miles is about our daily max. We hear so many pilgrims walking average of 15-20 miles daily and that is just not us. We really enjoy closer to 8-10 miles daily but at that rate we'd be here for 3 months! So yesterday was a challenge.
And the heat, it is so hot. The temperature does not seem to decrease until about 6:00 pm. Looking so forward to the weekend where the temperatures should go down again. Today's high was 96 degrees.
It started off as a very buggy hike this morning walking along the canal towards Fromista. At one point, I sat on a bench by the water waiting for Andre, swarmed with mosquitoes, and then realized there were big black spiders covering it. The stuff of nightmares.
When we reached Fromista, we enjoyed our 1st breakfast. I added my handy dandy tasty gazpacho soup from the super mercado to my tortilla. Also freshly squeezed orange juice. Delicious.
On our way to Poblacion de Campos, we noticed a small church a bit off the path. We decided to cross the street and head towards it. Not only was the door open, but in front were 2 very kind older men who offered us food inside the church along with a shot of vino tinto. Camino magic. It's a reminder to look up and view your surroundings so you don't miss the treasures all around you.
Heading into town, our tummies decided it was time for 2nd breakfast. Again we veered off the path a bit, and found a lovely hotel with the kindest host. She made us scrambled eggs with jamon and ice-cold sangria. Don't think I didn't add my gazpacho soup carton.
The patio had a lovely garden and was very serene. The place was immaculate. We wanted to stay, but having only walked about 5 miles at this point, we had to move on.
The rest of the day was mostly alongside the road. Four Camino markers leading the way every so many kilometers.
We visited a Knights Templar church in Villacazar de Sirga that houses the tombs of nobles and royalty. It was beautiful and the temperature was such a dramatic decrease inside, we again wanted to stay but needed to move on.
When we arrived in Carrion de los Condes, the goal was to get to our beds and take freezing cold showers. Our destination was an 11th century monastery. San Zoilo Real Monasterio is probably the most beautiful hotel I've ever stayed in. It was a little spooky I'll admit as our bed was quite literally above the tombs of the Counts of Carrion. But then again, I like that sort of thing.
As hotel guests, we were able to enter the monastery itself during closing hours and we did have it all completely to ourselves. For lack of a better word, it was incredible. Definitely the highlight of today. We also explored the hotel and found a little side chapel, ancient stairs in a tiny window next to our room, and several sitting areas where you could just take in the beauty.
We headed back to town to visit a few more churches including Iglesia de Santa Maria del Camino and Iglesia de Santiago. Unfortunately, we never did see the singing nuns that I've heard many pilgrims talk about. It was still so hot as we made our way back to the monastery which was just past the town.
Dinner at 8:00 pm was delicious with more gazpacho soup, my 3rd serving of the day. We also enjoyed pork loin and lamb chops. As dessert arrived, I felt a big hug around my shoulders. It was Dani from Rochester, a pilgrim we met several days earlier on the trail. She was arriving for dinner with another pilgrim met along the way. It was like seeing a close family member.
We continue to bump into several pilgrims we've met and it's always such excitement to know they are still here. It gives us renewed energy and makes us feel like we are part of a Camino tribe.
Tomorrow, the temperature will hit 100 degrees. We are going to attempt to hike what we can but we are also open to grabbing a bus or taxi if it becomes unbearable since most of the walk will have no shade from what we understand.
Despite the heat wave, we continue to feel the Camino magic along the way. Tonight, we sleep amongst the souls of Carrion de los Condes.
Mantennos a salvo y en tus oraciones!

Thanks for another great video. I love how you write down what happened during the day in the description. Sometimes I don't have to watch the entire video right away and being able to read what happened is just as exciting for me.

Carrion was one of my fave stops. A nice little town with a great courtyard and tons of nice bars/eateries. I love the comedic element you put in your videos and the songs are great fun too. Thanks!

I’m so loving your Camino videos! I’ve watched so many others which have good information but yours are the best, I like that you guys are so patient and detailed. Also so honest, you both are very “simpáticos” 😊 I’m planning for my Camino from SJPDP in September of 2024 and for sure are taking notes on the places you’ve been for food and albergues or hotels. I will able to only do half or a little less than half of the Camino this year but will continue it later on. Buen Camino from a future peregrina from San Francisco,Ca.
