"A symbol of our efforts on the pilgrimage"
Camino De Santiago Day 32: Foncebadón to El Acebo de San Miguel, Spain
    12 km (7.45 miles)
Today was an incredible day!! Incredibly scenic. Incredibly emotional. Incredibly painful. Incredible!!
We awoke to the sound of rain hitting the skylight roof above our heads, quickly ate a cup of hot noodles we had purchased the previous evening, and finished up getting all our gear together before deciding to head out of our hostal into the fog and freezing drizzle.
It was so cold!! We had to keep our bodies moving as we made our way up the mountain in the blanket of clouds. Andre let me borrow his gloves as I could not locate mine in my backpack, and my fingers were starting to feel the effects of frost bite
Despite the cold temperature, we were mainly focused on just one thing. Cruz De Ferro. Today was the day. All the stones we've been carrying since St Jean Pied De Port in France would now find their permanent home beneath this ancient shrine.
We arrived anticipating large crowds of people, but encountered only a handful. After removing our stones from our backpacks, we layed them out and thought about each person each stone or shell symbolized.
The tradition at Cruz De Ferro is to leave a stone to release a burden or in honor or memory of a loved one. The traditional pilgrim prayer, "Lord, may this stone, a symbol of my efforts on the pilgrimage that I lay at the foot of the cross, weigh the balance in favour of my good deeds some day when the deeds in my life are judged. Let it be so."
We spent a good hour or so here. Cold but incredibly grateful to have made it this far. I also left a picture of my twin sister that I'd been holding onto in a journal. Physically a weight was released. Also emotionally.
We decided we needed to start moving again to keep our bodies warm. As the clouds and drizzle dissipated, the awe-inspiring views appeared. A reward for making it this far. And there was purple everywhere! Purple mountains, purple flowers. Simply purple gorgeousness.
We had little food with us (just 2 gazpacho soups and some cheese) so we were very grateful to hear celtic music leading us to it's food truck heaven loaded with snacks and cervezas. I guzzled down a slice of chocolate cake, Andre guzzled down a cerveza. We continued on.
In Manjarin, we came across a Knights Templar albergue. It's eclectic decor was interesting and colorful against the mountainous backdrop.
The scenery is what got me through the rest of the day. My foot pain increased as we made our way down the steep, rocky terrain into El Acebo de San Miguel. Andre led the way as his calf pain has all but disappeared.
I'm frustrated with my constant foot pain. 500 miles is no joke. We have always been active, but walking for long stretches daily for 32 days takes it's toll. My mind is moving forward, I just need my body to cooperate.
El Acebo de San Miguel is another storybook village in the mountains. It's just breathtaking really. Again, it feels like you are walking onto the page of a fairytale. Our albergue was at the very end of this charming village. There was no super mercado in town and no food service until 7:00 dinner, so our calories came from sangrias and cervezas. Also olives. We will never say no to Spanish olives.
At dinner we met a young pilgrim from Italy, one from Canada, and also were reunited with another pilgrim from Japan. We spoke about the heat wave last week, foot injuries, and when/where/why we started our pilgrimage.
I noticed in photos today that I look very tired. I am very tired. And here I lay posting instead of sleeping..
Tomorrow, we face more of a steep decline. And it's supposed to rain which will make it slick. I'm not sure my feet can make the journey after today. I'm hoping for clarity and as always, less incredible pain.
    Mis pies son mi carruaje.

When I walked from Foncebadon to El Acebo this past late September it was cold and raining and that path really sucked, lol. After I slipped and busted my butt (only hurt my pride lol) I said screw it and switched to the blacktop roadway the rest of the way and played Frogger with traffic. I was going to go all the way to Molinaseca but the cold rain discouraged me and I stayed at the parochial in El Acebo as the big posh albergue was completo (I actually stayed there in 2018, very nice).

Thanks for capturing the emotion of Cruz de Ferro. I thought that location would be all about me "shedding" my own issues when in fact all I could think about was my Mom who died of cancer in 2006. I experienced uncontrollable sobbing...where did that come from? A remarkable place. By the way, you captured my rock in your video! At 4:38, my rock is at the top of the screen - the one with the face that looks like it is grimacing. We have a group where I live that paints rocks and hides them for others to find and take on journeys. I found this one and knew it would land here with me. Another great video. Thanks!

The energy at Cruz De Ferro was powerful and cleansing. I felt a large weight was lifted after we placed our stones there. I'm sorry about your mom. 😢 I believe you released some lingering grief as did I in that area. And I see your stone, our paths crossed once again!!

@@wedofly1998 I also felt a great weight lifted after placing my stone at the Cruz de Ferro! It was a healing moment that made the entire Camino Francés so worth the experience. I am really enjoying your blog. After the pandemic and a three year delay, I watched many blogs on the Camino Francés experience in preparation and finally was able to complete mine on June 26th. Your blog combines humor, candor and very much captures the Camino. Ultrea
