"Deep in the forest I stroll, to hear the wisdom of my soul."
Camino De Santiago Day 38: Fonfria to Samos, Spain
    20 km (12.427 miles)
We started off the morning with a large, late breakfast at our albergue. The cold and fog made us hesitate to start our day. We enjoyed the entire dining area to ourselves as the large school group had already headed out very early.
We made our way down the mountain and eventually out of the cloud cover. There are two pathways heading towards Sarria. Many pilgrims choose to head straight there as it is the shorter journey. We chose to head towards Samos to see the massive 6th century monastery located in the small village.
If you ever choose to walk the Camino De Santiago, we highly recommend not skipping Samos. This was one of our favorite walking days, the gorgeous greenery in nature is hard to describe. It was like we were walking in a mystical forest, half expecting to see little elves jump out on the path along the way.
The final ascent and then descent into the village was absolutely worth every step. We checked into our casa for the night, a modern accomodation located right across the street from the benedictine monastery and finished our usually routine of showers and laundry.
Samos is tiny but so very charming. We explored the village in it's entirety and had a wonderful late lunch of scallops and beef tenderloin at a nearby village restaurant. We also visited the town farmacia as we needed more paper tape for our toes as well as sports tape for our feet and more "vitamin I"-Ibuprofen. The farmacias in Spain all have a green plus symbol which is lit up if the farmacia is open.
I've narrowed down the cause of my right foot pain to my 2nd toe and my shoes. We think the top of my shoes have been hitting the bone leading to the toe and the top of my foot which therefore is creating all this pain. Topple that with repetitive walking now for 38 days. I am going to try loosening my shoes and also placing moleskin in this region of my foot as a padding from my shoe. I really should have just bought new hiking shoes early on. Now, with just a week left of walking, I can't justify the cost.
At 4:30, we headed to the monastery for a tour. It was lead by a monk and all in Spanish. The artwork and structure itself were remarkable. We also walked to a smaller church at the edge of town and hugged a 500 year old tree.
By this time, my feet just plain needed to rest. We decided on the super mercado for dinner picking up jamon, queso, onion, tomato, and fresh bread. Our room for the evening had an attached sunroom where we enjoyed dinner there and where I could just remove my shoes completely.
We also facetimed our daughter and enjoyed some music and watching videos before falling asleep by 8 pm.
Tomorrow is a big day. We head to Sarria and hit the 100 km mark!! It seems almost unreal that we are this close to the finish line!!
Tonight, I hope to dream of the forest and let my soul relax and wander.
Sigue tu alma conoce el camino!! 💙

Galicia, una joya en el noroeste de la península ibérica. Un pequeño, antiguo y hermoso país europeo del Estado español. Su capital, Santiago de Compostela, ciudad universal y patrimonio de la humanidad.

    Thanks for the vids
I’ve been enjoying ALL of them! As a former hospitalero at the Samos albergue I totally agree that it is beautiful. Just upstream from the monastery was a small chapel worth visiting and a spot where you could go for a swim if you don’t mind a touch of hypothermia
will return in 2023 for my sixth Camino
thanks for resurrecting the limp, blisters, thirst, hunger and the absolute spiritual joy of the freedom of the open road and the mindfulness associated with carrying all your meaningful worldly possessions on your back
 vitamin I?
