Hi, I am from the U.S. and recently joined the group so thank you! I have been waiting until I could retire, so now, I am starting my first Camino on August 27th from SJPdP. I've given myself some extra days to keep going to Finisterre once I reach Santiago. I'm using the time I have over the summer here on the East coast to train in the heat and to pare down my backpack to the lightest weight possible. Hope to see you on the Way! Buen Camino

Galicia is chilly and humid but not arctic cold. Think about 3 layers at most, tshirt,maybe a fleece and a foldable dawn jacket. You will get warm, when walking with backpack. A buff merino scarf is also a handy item ;)keep us informed how is your prep, hugs

I'm from Canada and I'll be doing the Camino Portuguese coastal route and spiritual variant, beginning May 3rd or 4th. I've heard what you suggest, Ricky and Erica, about starting in the middle of the month and I wish I could. But these are the dates that work for me and I'm super thankful that I get to have this wonderful adventure. Only three months to go!

I wasn’t going to say this, because it is personal, but the Camino de Santiago has changed my life without me even going yet. While I was preparing, I decided to get a total health checkup with lots of appointments to lots of different specialists. We discovered a small growth that was just about to become life-threatening. So, St. James has become my patron Saint, because while I was getting ready to go on pilgrimage to his shrine, I caught cancer before it would have become disfiguring or life-threatening.
I also hurt myself, so my trip was delayed, but that’s a different story. Haha.

@@caminotellers I feel great. I’m a bit out of shape since I was down for so long, but catching a life-threatening illness just before it “hatches” is pretty miraculous. It’s been a beautiful thing to prepare for this journey. I’m happy to have been thorough in my preparations, and I am grateful to have you for my guide. I wouldn’t feel at all sure about going through with the Camino without you opening the Way for me and others like me. Perhaps you are also to thank for preserving my quality of life. In your opinion, would you take a sleeping back on the primitivo in late april? I only took a sleeping liner on the frances but it was in September. And I'm not an ultra light hiker but I do like to keep it as light as possible. I'm a fairly warm sleeper and I'm guessing that some of the alburgues will have blankets, even if for a small fee. Thanks for the videos and who knows, maybe I'll see you out there someday.
April in primitivo is…cold! Nice dawn/synthetic jacket is a good idea, a really good idea!!! And a nice hat too. Keep us informed about the trail as we will be there few weeks after you !

Second, I'm planning on doing my first Camino starting mid-July of this year on the Frances route. Should I still plan on bringing a long sleeve shirt & a fleece for the evenings? Trying to save as much weight as possible and if I could drop those two it would save me about 435-450 grams.
Thanks a million for connecting! We always take two layers: the long-sleeve T-shirt, which helps us with sunburns, and the extra light, foldable down jacket, which can be a good idea for colder evenings, Galicia's humidity, and as a pillow if you need a quick rest. Many people use fleece jackets, but we prefer a lightweight, foldable jacket. What do you think?
My wife and l are starting early April 2024 will go via Valcalos just to be sure snow won't be a problem.
The 'Napoleon Route' is open from the 1st of April, weather permitting. The route through Valcarlos is beautiful! How is the preparation? Are you already packed?
@@caminotellers we are pretty much packed we have 3 weeks in the UK and 12 days travelling through France to st jean pied de port. We only have our backpacks for 5 months away so all our pictures will have us wearing the same clothes. Wash and wear, wash and wear.
I will start the French Way on the 8th of May, but i will arriving in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port late on the 7th.

I’ll start my journey on Camino Francés from SJPP next September 16Th and I may get to Santiago by the end of October. According to my plan it will take 38 walking days. A big or tricky question - Is this period of the year too rainy?

Hello and another great video. I don't know if you can answer this question: I have booked a one way flight from US to Madrid for April Camino. I have seen posts and comments about needing "proof of onward travel". I was planning on booking return flight after I had started my Camino. Any information on this?
I’ve been to Spain several times and while the Customs and Immigration Service may ask how long you plan to stay in the country, they will not ask for proof. It’s better to have your return ticket way ahead of time because it will likely be much cheaper.

How do we know which are private albergues vs regular ones?
There are lists of them on many pages, also there is an indication next to the main entrance… and the price is also a good indicator of which albergue is private or public or donation based.
I can walk around 15 km a day. Can I find a hostel-Albergue to stay in the evenings within this distance on the Camino de Norte? 🙏 thank you

Stephane! Welcome to the tribe. There are many ways you can help as a volunteer, nearly every place need a volunteer! Free food and accommodation. Getting paid is more tricky, but one of our friends, Julian, he used to give massages to people and he had hands full of work!

Are the streams and rivers safe to swim in as there is so much agriculture in Northern Spain?
I come from Scotland and the North of Spain (and Portugal) had some of the cleanest rivers and streams I have ever seen. An abundance of fish in them as well.

I drank water from those "safe" water taps on my first Camino and then for a few days I had to relieve myself like a dog on the streets. It's safer Estrella Galicia

Walking the Portuguese from Porto starting dec 20 (only time I can get 2 weeks from work). Do you still suggest train runners? Waterproof?
That’s a tricky one, as it will be rainy but also it could bring some snow. On the other hand side there is almost all of the walking on the pavements and made roads rather then hikes. Good trail runners with gore tex and a rain trousers so the water won’t just enter from above! But honestly, it’s a great time to walk!!!!
What about walking poles, like nordic walking?
The hiking poles and Nordic walking poles are different, and have a different usage. For Camino, hiking poles are recommended
I loved having my walking poles with me on the Camino Norte! It gives a good rhythm. It is good when they have a sling that is keeping it on your wrists. Also take some extra pole tipps with you. I could not find the right sort for my poles on the way, and the clicking on the street was not so nice.

You will be opening the Caminos this year, we will join in may!! How are the preparations going?
@@caminotellers - we have slowly built our training up over the last year from just walking an hour every day to now walking longer distances regularly with loaded packs. We've tested our footwear, clothes, packs, sleeping bags, and quietly examined our personal reasons for the Camino deeply. We've read your book, made new friends with people who have already done it. We often meet other pilgrims while we are on training walks - the sticks give us away - LOL. In short - we are counting the days !
We are starting the Camino Frances on March 14. Planning a leisurely pace on 16-22 km per day with rest days weekly. We are from South of Sydney!

This may seem a really weird question but have you ever met anyone who uses a C PAP machine in shared rooms (that's like a machine to help them breathe at night because they have sleep apnea) during your travels? I use one and I'm wondering the logistics of it. I can imagine it would be an issue and I would need to pay for a private hotel room each night. Be honest please. Jenny.
I did the Camino Frances 6 years ago. I walked with a guy for a few days who had a CPAP machine . It didn’t really seem to cause any problems . The only difficulty he had in the public albergues was getting a bed close enough to an electrical socket. He sometimes had to negotiate a bed swap to be able to plug hi machine in. This obviously wouldn’t be a problem in private rooms. The noise of the machine didn’t seem to bother anybody ( the sound was drowned out by all the snoring. 😂). Good luck.

The remains of Saint James are buried by tradition in Santiago de Compostella and were not "discovered" there.
The scollop shell is an ancient symbol of Christianity. While used on the Camino, it symbolizes the Christian pilgrim. It's not just as a pointer for Santiago, if it's even that.
