The Camino Frances, also known as the French Way, has existed for over 1,000 years. It is the most popular, well-marked, long-distance walking route in the world. In recent times 150,000 to 200,000 people walk on this route annually.
The French Way begins in the city of St. Jean Pied de Port, France and travels approximately 800km through the four Spanish Regions of Navarra, La Rioja, Castilla y Leon and Galicia, finishing in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
The route travels over mountainous landscapes, across the rolling Spanish countryside and through urban areas… introducing visitors to the most remarkable scenery, historical and cultural landmarks, churches, cathedrals, monasteries and friendly towns along the way.
Join award-winning, outdoor adventure filmmaker Mark Flagler as he embarks on this inspirational, 37 day journey, capturing this adventure of a lifetime.
Witness the challenges of walking on long-distance trails, the joys, moments of awe and wonder, creating new friendships, being part of the Camino family and experience all that makes the French Way so special.
Flagler Films has created a Walking the French Way Digital Bundle that answers the many questions about this route. This informative download provides additional essential information about this Camino. It's the perfect content for anyone who is looking to walk the French Way in the future. This package can only be found here: www.flaglerfilms.com/portfoli...

Wow. This is the best hiking documentary I've seen - a real model for others to follow. Not a blow-by-blow "this was day 6...7...8..." but rather, a beautifully conceptualized, thematic approach that leaves space for the viewer's own thoughts. Brilliantly made and well worth watching! Thank you.
Thanks for the great feedback. I loved walking and capturing my journey for the world to see. Walking a Camino is an amazing experience. Buen Camino.
Well said!
my wonderful wife Nick 🌻 and I walked the Camino Francés in 2015 to Santiago then on to Finesterre and Muxia then in 2019 we walked the Norte and Primitivo to Santiago and followed up by walking the English Way from Ferrol to Santiago - three times we have walked into Santiago together - sadly this year 2023 I lost Nick 🌻 to cancer on March 4th, we had been together for forty years, married for thirty seven years having three children together - I will again walk the Camino Francés in 2024 carrying Nick all the way in my heart - walking the Camino de Santiago was for Nick 🌻 and myself one of the most important and absolutely fabulous things that we shared together - hope to see some of you fellow pilgrims walking to Santiago in 2024 🇦🇺 🇪🇸 kd🌿
I'm so sorry for your heartbreaking loss.I hope you will find comfort and peace the next time you walk the camino.Much love,to you and your beautiful strength ❤🙏
Stop at every high cross and church and pray for her soul. Dont waste the opportunity.
You are very fortunate to had a beautiful fullfilling relationship, this is so very special, its so good to read about it and gives me hope that there is hope for me and others to search for the same at least for a little time we have left ❤
May God bless you and speed Nick’s soul to heaven!🙏🏼🙏🏼
I have also lost a wife. I have three wonderful children and my own life to pledge to her memory. Bless you for your devotion to your own wife’s memory. They never die if we live them.
I have seen many El Camino documentaries but this one really stands out among them all. I really liked how you interviewed people. Thank you so much
Thanks. I loved walking and capturing my Camino journey. Buen Camino.
It does stand out. Good photography. An adult’s way to look at a long challenge. My St. Thomas friend walked it 20 years ago and felt alone as an American.
🔯☕️I find it intriguing but as a Jew it would be unrealistic to actually try. It is a Christian thing, not for the people who do not find comfort in the Spanish Jesus.
Still, I do want to visit and maybe walk a couple of days on the path closest to the sea. This is where the Jews would go to escape to France in the 1300s-1600s.
This has got to be one of the best produced documentaries about the Camino I’ve seen. So inspirational. And nice to see regarding the French Way. Thank you for showing the many sights along the way.
Thanks. Buen Camino
Thank you
I did the Camino Francés in 1996. You brought me back, with all the emotions. I appreciate it!
Thanks. Buen Camino.
I like this. Not making a big deal about things. There is always some place to sleep. Dont worry. Just open your heart and mind.
I walked this in 2018 in 33 days. It changed me for ever; in abnegation lies our redemption. I salute all my fellow pilgrims and I salute all the kind-hearted people who provided succor to this weary sinner.
Ultreïa ! Ultreïa ! E sus eia Deus adjuva nos !
Te felicitó por este magnífico video, gracias por compartir. Buen Camino para todos los peregrinos.👏👏👏🍀🍀

Amazing 🎉 felicidades 🎉 great film of the Camino . More success to you. Thanks for the invite.
Thank you for this wonderful film of your journey. Your movie captures the spirit of friendship and community so well. The lived experiences and the reasons why people walk the Camino are heart-breaking and inspirational at the same time. I walked this way in 2019 at the age of 61 and I know that if I had walked this journey as a young man, my life would have been so different. It is life changing. I also recognise so well the contradictory emotions of the penultimate day - the excitement that I was about to complete my most amazing journey mixed with the genuine sadness that it was coming to an end. I remember the mists and beautiful views on that penultimate day and I remember noting that it was the Camino's way of showing it's gratitude that I had walked for 5 weeks (my reason for walking was a walk of gratitude that my elder son was still with me). I walked so slowly that day. I struggled with La Meseta, really struggled, but the journey through Galicia was incredible - literally waking on clouds. It will live with me forever. God bless you for reminding me of how wonderful we can be to each other no matter where we are from or what languages we speak.
I just want to add a story of 3 nights that illustrate how special this walk is. The first was in a small alburgue where a priest from New York (a priest walking the Camino barefoot) held the most poignant, informal mass in the front room of the alburgue. As a Catholic, albeit somewhat lapsed, it was powerful. The second was in Ages, population 60, where the pilgrims took over and the camaraderie between nations was joyous as we ALL drank, talked and watched the sun go down. The third was arguably the best night of my life where, after a long days walking in the heat, a fellow pilgrim picked up a guitar that was lying around and led the whole of the alburgue in a concert of singalong songs that lifted everybody. Truly, truly special.
The singalongs on the Camino were the best! Especially in some of those medieval churches where the acoustics made you feel like you were singing with angels.@@sdcareyuk
Enjoyed this a lot. One day, through God's grace, I will do the Camino.
Thanks. I highly recommend walking on a Camino. Buen Camino.

One of the best documentaires that I have seen. Great job!
I made my own way to Santiago de Compostela. Cycling from my home in Belgium, hiking some parts and even kayak 20k.
It has been great and I really miss the simple life of the Camino!
All the best, Kaat
Thanks. Buen Camino
Excellent Camino video. You are obviously a pro.
Thanks. Yes I’ve worked in video production for over 20 years. I specialise in outdoor recreation, travel and adventure productions. Buen Camino.
@@FlaglerFilms figured. Camino videos are impossible to keep short. You kept it around 30 minutes yet it was packed with great information, scenes, and touching stories. Plus, you never complained about blisters or swollen knees. Haha. Really enjoyed your presentation. I'm gonna have to steal your techniques. 😆
Yes, thank you, we just returned home last night from Madrid, and watched yours this morning 🙌🫶🙌
Oh this is great! Thank you for this remarkable film, you've inspired and encouraged.
Thanks. Buen Camino
Great video Mark, really inspirational
Thanks
Definitely a journey for the To-Do list. Thanks Mark.
Thanks Teresa
The small villages of the interior of Spain are very underrated and I think that they are magnificent.
Wow, Mark, I so enjoyed your film. It brought back so many memories for me, and also made me aware of a lot of things I missed in my rush to secure a bed for the night at an alburgue. I would love to do it again, the way you did, with time to stop and see the churches and really enjoy my surroundings and meet the people.
Thanks. I loved walking this Camino. I want to go back and just walk it, no big cameras.
I walked this Camino in 2014 and again in 2016, followed by the first half of the del Norte and Primitivo in 2019. Planning on doing the Camino de Madrid to Sahagun in 2024 and then following on to Ponferrada and Santiago de Compostella. I’d encourage anyone to go and walk a Camino but be careful, it gets into your blood and you want to o it again. 😂
Yes, walking on Caminos is special. Buen Camino.
Great rendition of the Camino spirit ❤
Thank you. Buen Camino.
Fantastically done documentary. Its nice to meet you! I enjoyed learning about the Frances way with you. I just got off the Camino “The Portuguese Way” myself and posted a bunch of short videos of my experience along the way. I’ve been looking for some people to follow to get my Camino fix now that I’m back home. I am going to start following you. I just subscribed. I look forward to more videos.
Thanks for the positive feedback. I'm hoping to walk and film the Portuguese Way in the future. Buen Camino.
@@FlaglerFilms I hope you do. It’s totally different than the Frances Way from what I can tell. The walking and scenery is similar, but its no where near as crowded. I hope you get to do the Portuguese Way someday!
It was so inspiring to watch your documentary ... as you said, just go! Open your heart and minds to the adventure of living. I'll be on The Path this coming May .... sooooo grateful for good health to walk it. Thank you.
Thanks. Buen Camino
Very inspirational documentary. I am not sure if i will ever be able to walk the French Way but I surely do wish it. Your storytelling is so peaceful and relaxing to watch that it felt that I walked with you all the way. Thanks for creating a memorable experience for your viewers.
Thank you. Buen Camino.
Agreed - fine point! He does seem so relaxed in his logical, calm approach to things, in general.

Thanks. That’s great you are walking the Camino Frances in 2024. I do have a Walking the French Way Digital Bundle full of bonus footage, videos and photos. It’s perfect for anyone who is planning a French Way journey. www.flaglerfilms.com/portfolio-item/walking-the-french-way-digital-bundle/
There were over 446,000 pilgrims who received their compostelas in Santiago in 2023.
There were many pilgrims who completed a Camino without getting a compostela.
The total number of pilgrims was estimated at around 600,000.
Just over one-third of the total walked from Sarria.
You are correct. 219,789 people walked on the French Way in 2023. Well that’s how many people applied for their Camino Frances Compostela. The pilgrim office gave me the pilgrim statistics.
I walked the Frances first in 2007 starting from Poitiers...close to my home at the time.
I arrived in Santiago and was the only pilgrim in the cathedral square.
I have walked multiple Caminos since.
Each year gets busier.
Last year was crazy busy.
Unfortunately the nature of the Camino has changed with hikers outnumbering pilgrims.
On 29th April I arrive in Sevillle from Edinburgh and start walking the VDLP/Sanabrés route.
My treat to myself for my 75th year.
Ultreia et Suseia.
I enjoyed your video.
@FlaglerFilms
@@harrykey2448 that's great. Thanks. Buen Camino.

Ive not walked the Camino, But I know the way.
Congratulations and thank you so much for sharing your journey !
Thanks and Buen Camino.
Well done Mark. You summarized the Camino beautifully. I finished the Frances on 10/25/23. Your documentary brought back so many wonderful memories. Thank you!
Thanks. Buen Camino
This is a really great, laid back, unassuming video. It has brought back big smiles and warm memories. Thank you Mark.
Thanks. Buen Camino.
Oohhh- it is beautiful .....
Thanks. Buen Camino
Very well done. It makes me want to go back and do it all over again!
Thanks. Buen Camino.
Love the cardboard "score card" of the crossed off days, at the end of your Journey: Great idea.
So glad you documented it for yourself and any Loved Ones in your Circle of Family Members and Friends - you'll be able to view your film over and over!
Thank you for taking us all along!
Best film from the camino, so far, I believe. You showed many of the high-lights, but nothing can make up for experiencing it yourself. I did the camino in two sections (2011/2012) except the Mezeta (Burgos-Leon), but still want to take the whole in one go some time. Thank you!
Fantastic film. Best wishes to you.
Thanks. Buen Camino
Thank you!!!!!🙃🙏🎶🎶
Buen Camino
Great work Mark
Truly a class act.
Looking forward to future works 👍👏✌️

Thanks. Walking the Camino is a wonderful experience.
This is the best camino video I have seen so far. Great work!
Thanks. I appreciate that. Buen Camino.
Beautiful and highly informed documentary. Great job!
For my return to this vid: 5:54 beautiful elevation shot.
Thanks. Buen Camino.
The best Camino video I've seen, great job. The video is about the Camino and the people and the history, it's so much better than the self centered "OMG, look at me" or "useless shocking tips" videos out there. People wanting to produce travel and exploring videos need to watch your video first, it is truly top notch work.
Thanks great to hear. Thank you. I loved walking this Camino and producing a documentary about my journey. Buen Camino.
Terrific!
Thanks
Inspiring work Mark!
Thanks
Great film
Well done! Thank you!
Love it, love it, love it.
Simple and anthentic.
I can almost sense all those beautifull days again.
Thanks Mark, wish you the best.
Thanks Joao for the positive comments. I liked your interview. You should check out my digital download with extended documentary. I included more of your interview in that video. You can find that digital package here: www.flaglerfilms.com/portfolio-item/walking-the-french-way-digital-bundle/

This was beautifully done.
I’m walking Mid September- October. And absolutely can’t wait!!!
Thanks. Enjoy your Camino walk. Buen Camino.
wow… this is one well-made movie ☀️
I thought I was being kinda ambitious in the making of my movies (it’s a labor of love, after all), but this is such a well-made primer on the Camino. Bravo!
Thanks. I’ve produced videos about walking trails for over 20 years. I have lots of practice. Buen Camino.
Wow, what an amazing place to walk! What an adventure! Good for you! Will be adding this to our bucket list!
Thanks. Buen Camino
Very well done. One of the best I've seen.
Thanks. Buen Camino
Eu também estava no caminho, no minuto 6:41, Albergue Via Mineira 😅, a última a sua esquerda (ou a que estava na ponta da mesa😂) Belíssimo vídeo. Eu completei em 34 dias o caminho. Parabéns 🎉 Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷
That's great. I loved that Albergue! Good times on the Camino.Buen Camino.
Thank tou for this lovelly film. I am taking my first steps on the camino from🙂 Saint Jean pied de port in about one week.
Thanks and good luck with your walk. Buen Camino.
A lovely reminder of the most wonderful experience of my life which came to an end just a week ago. Buen Camino!
Thanks. Buen Camino
So impressive. Thank you for sharing your journey ❤
Thanks. Buen Camino.
Love love love this! Appreciate the tips and insights along with the breathtaking vistas. On the bucket list now! Thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks. Buen Camino.
This was a good documentary although the father is not a likeable character. He comes across as arrogant, cold, superior. The gentleman reminds me of narcissism snd that is not a warm memory.
The production is excellent and the two sons are the heroes here esoecially the young one because he was the butler to the father. I think the two brothers would be wise if they walked the Camino again so they could have a blast! Then I would love to watch their siblings documentary. It would be a hit! This was the 4th Camino documentary I have watched in five days
I love them! Perhaps I get to walk the Camimo (even just a part of it) before I turn 70 (5 years hence).❤😊
So well done, Mark! Thank you for taking us back along this route. So many beautiful memories of sweeping views, sunrises and sunsets. I particularly appreciated the explanations of your detours into the churches and monasteries. Keep up the good work. All the best in your travels and hope you make it back to the Camino just for yourself with no cameras.
Great film.. thx
amazing tour
Awesome piece of work, Mark! I cried several times through your movie! Some day, I'll be there. 1000 thx!
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I loved walking on this Camino. I highly recommend this journey. Buen Camino.
Thank you fur such a thoughtful film
Nice Video Thank You !!!
