  • At 31 years old I have decided to turn sober. 10 days in and it's time to talk about it.
There's a societal assumption that when you stop drinking alcohol its because you have a problem and you've hit 'rock bottom', this just isn't the case. As this year has gone on I have become more sober-curious and alongside my ADHD diagnosis I knew something needed to change. I needed to take a step back from my relationship with alcohol.
The majority of my mistakes and poor decisions have been made whilst drinking or because I had been drinking. I sat reflecting on all the regrets I had made in my life and very few of them were made whilst I was sober. This baffled me, I knew something needed to change.
The pressure society holds over us to drink is mind boggling, and if we want to 'unsubscribe' to that way of living we are questioned, told we are boring or asked if we have a problem. For me, this isn't the case, I want to know sober Alex and what sober Alex wants from life. Who knows if this will be forever, but it definitely will be for now. I will keep posting about my journey going sober, if you have any tips or advice please share it in the comments!

Stumbled on your channel and I just want to say that I am so proud of you. I resonate with your story. I'll be 8 months alcohol free in a couple of weeks and I wish I had documented how much money I've saved etc. Excited to be with you in your journey. I had trouble with sleep myself. I had to sip herbal bed time teas to help me to rest and deep breathing exercises also helped.

Do you feel pressure from people around you in social situations to drink, or do you find that most people are supportive? I think I’m very close to quitting altogether but it’s something that worries me as I have a lot of people in my friend circle and family that like to drink. Also well done 👏 💪

What an amazing video i have felt the absolute 100% same for the last few years but finally have gone sober as a new year resolution. I thought it was just me. Sometimes the anxiety and worry about what you have said or how you have embarrassed yourself leads to more drinking and you realise it wasn’t that bad but now I’ve just made it worse. A constant stress. Thank you so much Alex! You have just confirmed everything for me and you are a role model to the younger generation. Subscribed! Ps. Please can you keep us updated on your sober journey?

I saw your insta post about this a few days ago and it made so much sense. I am suffering today after being so drunk last night, had black outs, argued and cried. My day has been ruined, head is banging and I'm back in work tomorrow and will probably feel just as bad. I have watched this video and have decided to join you in your sober journey. proud of everyone on the sober journey. i’ve never drank alcohol and never been interested, helps that i’m Muslim and it’s discouraged in our faith- due to all the reasons Alex and so many in the comments have said they found as negatives.
i often feel quite sad when i’ve been around others who are drunk or hungover and see them be not their best self or the way their body language and anxiety changes. it’s sad because i wish they could see themselves and know there’s so many other ways to be social, be happy, be confident and have fun without alcohol.
i’m 28 and have had amazing moments and experiences without the help of alcohol (despite having other barriers like mental health and health conditions) and that’s not because i’m any better or special- it’s just because it IS POSSIBLE. so possible.
please don’t let society’s obsession with alcohol make you feel like you have to partake- you don’t. it’s not legal because it’s good for you, it’s legal because it’s lines the pockets of many who do not care about you.

As a 21 year old who doesn't drink and hasn't done throughout my life (apart from having worked through sips of different alcohols to try them), this one resonates. I often get lots of questions why - and it's simply because I don't like the taste but deeper down, I've seen alcoholism affect so many people through my life and I want to be in control of my life and decisions - it doesn't make me any less "fun". It does get a little isolating because I always found I wasn't invited out like everyone else but thankfully, since starting my paramedic training almost 3 years ago, I've had nothing but acceptance and love. Do whatever is best tor you Alex, whatever helps you to love the beauty of life💗

So nice to see you again Alex. I don't drink alcohol - in my early twenties I had a medical condition and the doctor advised me not to drink alcohol until the condition cleared up. It opened my eyes to a lot of things. I would go to parties and being sober I would see people slurring and staggering around - I was embarrassed for them. I would go out and still have fun without drinking anything. When the condition was gone I realized I didn't need it in my life.

I took at hiatus from drinking for a few months and it was very good for my health , productiveness and my happiness overall. Unfortunately there’s too much of a social stigma around not drinking. That was the worst apart about not drinking the socialising element. Eventually people do get used to your lifestyle choices and adapt. ❤

I drink every day. Mainly a glass of wine with dinner or sometimes a beer. Nothing heavy at all. However, whenever I go through a stressful time or feel depressed, I do then drink a lot more. I’m finally aware I use it as a coping mechanism and absolutely go through phases of heavy drinking. The idea of stopping is a little scary to me, so, in a way, I think that’s a reason I should stop. Just be careful, I have found that it is always an ongoing process…it’s not just in the difficult times that we may desire old lifestyles and ways of coping. I have found when the new sober lifestyle becomes more “normal,” and the enthusiasm / energy required settles down on a personal level, and the need to justify the step runs out of steam, there is a creep to rejoin the culture of drinking
It’s easy to look back but keep moving forward!

I feel so identified! I have the same anxiety and even depression the days after I drink and I don't drink a lot. I have been thinking about going sober for a couple of years but I made the definitive decision a couple of days ago after I knew the father of my son died because of his abuse with alcohol. Wow, I absolutely love this video and am in a very similar position so am happy I stumbled across it. I’d love to see one focused on sleep as I feel like my life is being held hostage with the lack of sleep I get, which is of course my fault for the bad habits I can’t get out of.

Good for you Alex and good luck! I stopped drinking at the beginning of lockdown due to my anxiety really peaking physically. I’ve probably had 4 drinks in the past 3 years and it’s very rare I miss it. I completely agree re the pros and cons, the cons of drinking alcohol definitely outweigh the pros for me now. It’s difficult as my husband loves drinking and many of my family, friends, peers drink often. Like you say it’s so ingrained in culture it’s hard to stand apart from the crowd.
My identity was as a party girl for the best part of two decades. I never would have believed I would give it up! But I’ve also done a lot of therapy and manage anxiety through lifestyle so realise now that drinking has always been a way to numb and to fit in/ impress others.
There is a lot of re- learning to do but health is so important to me now. I have a benign/ non serious heart arrhythmia called SVT which can flare up when I don’t take care of myself which is an extra incentive. At almost 40, I realise that being kind to my body and mind gives me the best chance of enjoying a good quality of life and health in my second half of life 👏

Oh and didn’t mention SLEEP! 💯 sleep is soooo important to me now!! My mental health is sooo much better when I get a good 7-8 hours sleep. It’s so important to us. And drinking, even a couple impacts my sleep so this was actually the no 1 reason I rarely drink now!!

Thank you so much for opening up this conversation online and for younger people. I'm 26 and have done around 300 days sober. People ask the obvious question of 'why did i stop drinking' and there are multiple answers to this question. There were a few things with friends that I found quite tricky to navigate as whenever we would hang out, everyone would get quite boozy and I'd feel pretty left out, it's fair enough but also didn't make me feel great about this decision (I have a bit more of a tendency to take drinking too far so it's less of a choice for me). Maybe you could do a video for drinkers on how to support their sober friends as I think a lot of people don't even think about it.

I still struggle to explain why I don't drink I normally say my medication but I feel like it's more acceptable these days.

Im 32 and reached a year sober on 18th December - the best thing I’ve ever done. I think a common myth is that problem drinking is black and white,it absolutely isn’t I think most people are in that grey area in between as I was myself, but for me if drinking effects you in any negative way then you are still a ‘problem’ drinker, you don’t need a ‘rock bottom’ moment. The changes were slow but as I got more and more into it and gained momentum they come thick and fast,my skin,my digestion,my mood,my ability at work even my parenting. It helped to see alcohol for what it actually is,willpower will only last so long and you are setting yourselves up to fail if you still see alcohol as this positive super social party essential, see it for what it is - a poisonous chemical responsible for a lot of evil in the world,a life wrecker,if it was discovered today it would be declared unfit for human consumption, you’ll soon be *glad* you aren’t drinking it and won’t need willpower. With all the money I saved I bought a gym membership for my local club, has sauna, steam etc I’ve been able to get back into running, the indirect benefits of becoming AF are endless. Life changing.

I am 21, I never drunk much when I was 16, I might have had the odd can of something but I never took to drinking and going down the local beech getting smashed. This has opened up my eyes and got me thinking, your right!!!!!! I have woke up after a night drinking and felt anxious. I have been a major sufferer of anxiety so that doesn't exactly create a good mix. But yup I have woke up after feeling incredibly anxious. I have forgotten the night and what was said. I have gone to a nightclub and woke up with a mad hangover, ended up at a McDonald's at 4am spending way to much money and eating at that time is just a no lets face it. You have opened up my eyes with your video and I might have to give some serious consideration as to whether I will keep on drinking. Aside from the after affects, alcohol is expensive and you often drink more than you should, you will gain weight aswell and in particular for me being incredibly overweight to the tune of 100lb or so it really isn't a good mix. My weight is an issue all un to itself but I struggle to care about myself almost collectively. I care about my weight but I don't care or respect myself to do anything about it. Maybe a change for me which your doing swell obviously is to just quit the drink. I have found myself drinking out of upset and depression and so maybe I should really be quitting it whilst im ahead

Great to see you back Alex. I'm glad that you are making a decision based on what's right for you. I didn't start drinking until 20 years old, and it was only an occasional cider, i'm 29 now, and i must admit i drink more now, usually Prosecco or a GNT, never mix my drinks, i do want to cut back to be honest, my older sister is an Alcoholic with Bipolar, and it scares me to think i could end up the same.
Luckily i've never had a hangover.. but i am hoping i can reduce my intake.

    Hi Alex,
This is the first video of yours I've watched as it came up in my suggested and I honestly couldn't imagine a more relatable video right now. I'm 29 and have very similar drinking habits to you, losing a good couple of days to drinking and recovering every few weeks throughout my twenties. I've been trying to buy a house for years, and although I earn enough I never seem to have enough money going into the savings account and I've realised how much alcohol might be playing a part in this, as well as destroying me mentally and physically.
My last drink was New Year's Eve so this is officially day 5 for me. I'm sure you have many people reaching out to you, but if you'd like someone to join you on this journey for support then please feel free to message me!

Sober here too! I’m 38 and grew up with alcoholic father. I never ever wanted to end up like that. I noticed that alcohol only ever made me either feel sick or more anxious the days after. So I cut it out completely before it ever became a problem. It’s expensive and a known depressant. It baffles me that it’s such a big part of our culture.

I’ve just watched this video and decided to go sober after a Christmas / new year spent with me getting very drunk at family occasions and embarrassing my partner and children. When I think about my past, all my regrets have been after I’ve had a drink. I am not very confident, so I drink in social situations to try to fit in and be liked. Unfortunately, once I start drinking I don’t stop until it ends up with either me getting upset, doing embarrassing things or arguing with my partner. Enough is enough as I’ve got too much to lose if I carry on.

  • @nartarlyiatremaynne1239

My parents are huge drinkers and both smoke between 50 - 60 cigarettes daily.
My Brother and I have never smoked or tasted alcohol it always fascinates me as to how people drink so much if they are not thirsty.
When we attend weddings people enquire as to why we do not drink and our reply is "We like our reality!"
We have never been smug about this fact, would you drive your vehicle down the freeway at 80 km and throw it into reverse???
No you would not so we both feel we have dodged a bullet by not drinking.
Dr. Alex you are brave to inform people that at this point you have decided to be sober at 31 years of age.
    Well done you.

I work in the alcohol and drugs recovery field. I don’t drink. Regardless of whether you give up for health benefits or you have an alcohol misuse disorder, I haven’t met anyone who becomes sober and doesn’t report back at how much better life becomes without alcohol. What I have found with folks who aren’t problem drinkers is they drank socially every week and just thought all the symptoms they were experiencing was part of getting older and when they stopped realised it was the after effects of their drinking. They wish they’d done it sooner!

I’ve never enjoyed the way alcohol affected my mind and body so I stopped in my 30s and now in my 50s I occasionally have a glass if I’m at a wedding for example but we do not drink in pubs or restaurants and most of bottles people buy us are used in cooking or passed onto people who like to drink . Well done for taking a stand and hopefully helping others to see alcohol is a crutch to something more important .
