  • In this episode of Tough Rules & Cool Interactions, I will be answering another subscriber requested question, this time from legi0n715 who asked a great question about why it is that sometimes abilities or cards let you get around the timing restrictions of casting a spell, like how sometimes cards will let you cast a Sorcery on an opponent's turn, but then others with very similar wording do not let you do this.

Hey, happy new year! Love your videos.
Speaking of timing, everytime me and my friends reach a complicated gamestate (an average saturday night) I have to warp my head around replacement effects and the infamous layers system. Your videos helped me out a lot (thx btw) but I still fear having to learn wtf dependencies are. I would love to see you taking a deeper dive on that topic (with tricky questions, of course ^^).

Oh boy, dependencies are crazy. I think the last video he did on that was when the 40k cards came out, there was some creature that had an ability that made lands lose their abilities or something like that.

I'm glad the videos have been helpful. And yeah, there will for sure be some more videos covering Dependencies as that is top tier complexity in Magic. Anytime I talk with people about how you can't write a rule for every possible interaction, it's almost always in relation to Dependencies as they are their own little puzzle.

I like the note about lands. That's very good to know. I remember you doing an episode about the differences between playing lands and putting a land into play and it was nice seeing that stuff come up again.

Oh yeah, this series is going to be a lot of building blocks built on top of previous episodes. And I'll revisit earlier episodes over time, for one cause my audio quality sucked back then but also because I'd like to keep referencing cards as they're being released. To help people searching for that specific card.

Oh man, I thought for sure Panglacial Wurm would get a mention in this vid! Still, very important concept to teach people about. Happy New Year!

Oh boy, that card is just a rules nightmare and creator of chaos for certain situations.

I have to explain this often, and I actually have been playing the Voidwalker wrong all this time. I just assumed it was cast as a resolution of his ability. Now I feel dumb. I like how you described it, of having a window of time.

Good video. I went through this rabbit hole when I built my Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor deck, which falls into your secondary category. I found it a bit confusing you don't have to obey timing restrictions to play a land with it, but you can only play it on your turn (and only if you haven't played a land yet).

Yup, and in general those things that let you cast/play multiple cards at the exact same time can get screwy. Cause if some require a target then them targeting one of the other spells becomes an issue. I run into that pretty often, in fact I did twice today.

For sure, they're nice to be able to directly answer y'all's questions. And they don't have to be the big questions that are super tough, ask any questions and I can always answer them here in the comments.

I see this happen almost every week, this gave me a really good way to explain it. The closing statement you made, I like that.

Ha! That bit at the end about your heaters. I bet you're trying to make shorter videos so that they're turned off for a shorter time.

@@ThisIsACommanderChannel Dang man, that sucks, I'm sorry that you gotta freeze for a while as you record the audio. I appreciate the work you do on these videos to help out us commander players.

@@kyleedmunds5329 Big room and right next to a large cold window. It's a bummer.
