      When painting doors, it is important to not let the paint dry on you. I did not see the final product in the sun to see if his brush edges showed up. Generally, when I paint the door, I brush the edges of the top four panels but roll out the centers right away, and I don't go onto the main area until the centers are done with the small roller. Then roll the main area working down starting with the top half then to the bottom half, always trying to keep the edges wet until the area is done.
      In the video, I could not tell the air temperature, or moisture level either. That also can either give you more time, or dry the paint quicker, like in 80 degree weather.

    I was once helping my dad install an interior door. He was planning on teaching me how to do all the shimming stuff, but by some kind of miracle, it installed without needing any kind of shimming or leveling, or anything. It came out absolutely perfectly. And I attribute this to the door and the jamb, and the walls all being equal amounts of uneven and unlevel in just the right places.

    Hey, Jeff. That strapping that you had to remove from the door frame is meant to hold the doors together on a pallet. They'll ship them 5 or 6 on a pallet and have that strapping for support during shipping. Store should be removing that when they load in on a sales floor so you don't have to.

    Jeff, sorry to be the master of the obvious, I do love your videos. Rough frame in dimensions and actual door dimensions usually leave you with a far more space than you had here. You spent the first 14 minutes of this install dealing with having too tight of a rough frame in. If your framer is a Ninja Level 10 type then you can get away with a tighter opening. Typically the side rough opening is approx. 2" wider and the top rough is 1" taller. The shims and the level are your time saving friend-- and over-sandwich your shims and compress them with your installation screws.
    Thanks again Jeff!

    6:50 That's a #3 Phillips bit. And the reason they're there, is because the HD received multiple doors on a pallet. These doors are screwed with nylon straps to prevent their movement during shipping. Store associates are supposed to remove them when they stock them, however, sometimes people get lazy and only remove the screws on one side (the side facing the store aisle). lol

    Love the work gents! I would recommend reading the door warranty card first. I found out that all of the jam had to be primed and painted or else the manufacturer wouldn't warranty anything on the door. Of course I found this out after the door was installed and siding put back on. End before the beginning everyone.

    As a tip for painting a door, take a wedge and wedge the bottom on the latch plate face and toss some cardboard under the length. It’ll steady the door, allow you to roll all sides without having to swing it. Toss some painters tape on the hinges and then knife the outline then just paint right over it.

    I followed your video yesterday to install a door. I fought with it for almost 2 hours. It wouldn't lay flat, it wasn't sitting square. Nothing was right. I pulled it out and I found 2 little black plastic pieces stapled to the bottom of the door. it was packing material. Ugghhh. Once I removed those, the door was up in about 10 minutes flat!

  • @MrJoopKlep
    @MrJoopKlep Před 3 měsíci

    Nice work. One suggestion; with such an utter flimsy factory door frame as I saw in the video, I would, before constructing any walls, have pre-made a strong, square and snug fitting door frame from beams around it on a workbench. Install that in place, and then build the walls left and right of it. This way once the walls are finished you have a really strong entrance, and that factory door including its flimsy doorframe will fit perfectly, without gaps .

    Having learned from my grandfather, who built a lot of North Vancouver from the late 1930s through the 1960s, I was taught to kick the hinge side of the jamb outwards just a degree or two, to prevent the door from binding with the jam when it closes. Is this an outdated concept, or still an acceptable practice? I'm guessing it compensates for seasonal movement of solid wood, which most doors are not made of anymore.
    Cheers!

    Usually, you'd go flush with the drywall on the inside (0.5" past the frame, not flush with the frame). That's why it is 4.5" wide, it accounts for 0.5" outisde sheeting and 0.5" inside drywall, so the trim could stay level over the door frame and the sheeting.

      @ST-0311 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Well, I see both Sophia's and WW's points. It certainly can be done as DIY. However, it's a more advanced DIY project, and requires tools many don't have.
      The same thing can be done with trim coil, or either vinyl or aluminum flashing. Any of those can be worked with a utility knife or snips, and work equally as well. One could also brush or spray on a couple of coats of Flex Seal.
      Jeff should have also applied a double bead of silicone along the exterior edge between the tape and the door sill. He said he's forcing the water to run either in or out, but it shouldn't ever run in. Silicone would have stopped any flow inwards, so the water can only travel out where it needs to be.

    When the doors arrive they are standing on a pallet, usually 5 doors or so. That piece of plastic screwed to the frame once ran across 5 doors holding them on the pallet. it's faster to cut the plastic than remove the screws. You can design a $4000 door and it may show up with and aluminum threshold and pallet grade lumber under the aluminum. I always wanted my R/O 2 1/2" bigger than frame size and always recommended NOT having the door stained or finished in any manner. With the added expense your painter can do it and I won't have to order another door that will take 2 months to arrive and be damaged again in shipping. Sad but true. I designed custom doors , windows and moldings/millwork for 16 years. Trust me, customers are as reasonable as employees, even the "pros." I refused to work with many customers and never got in trouble DIYers and even many pros do not know what goes into designing doors and windows and the framing aspect. I only worked with 2 or 3 people my entire time because so many people couldn't wrap their heads around designing. My favorite was when a customer would come in to get a window. "I need a window." "What size?" "standard." Sometimes to be make a point I would flop the Andersen catalog 6" thick and tell them to show me their standard window out of 100,000 standard windows...😁 I'm curious why no sealer under the threshold? 3 lines, not a big s?

    Wow your window framing is horrible no jack studs and why 2 king studs on the door?

    Using a utility knife is great until you slip and slice you finger off.

    Every time you leave your level standing upright it makes me cringe.
    Dropping a level to me is like dropping a baby.
    Ya know.. Nail polish remover is just scented acetone.
    Another option for tightening screws is jam a (wooden) toothpick into the hole.
    Shouldn't the windows be taped from the bottom up "Water barrier"

    talks just to talk, back in the day was made for speed? no now its all about speed, we just have more technology. Back in the day quality labor was everything. On top of that you clearly didn't leave a 2 inch oversized rough opening. first 15 minutes is playing around because it is to tight.

    You guys built a hole that's just a hair larger than a door? Real framers make it 1" over :-)))

    A properly installed door should stay wherever you open it to .... if it swings in on its own its installed improperly !!!!!! the wall is out of plumb which in your case is bad because YOU JUST BUILT IT!!!!!!

      If "level with the universe" means nothing to him, his door will most likely never stay wherever he opens it to.

    Door is the worng side in why in the world would you istall it to have a recess out side to collect water and snow ... but I guess you want it to intentionally rot from inside out since that's like a 10$ interrior door anyway.

    Worst teacher ever. Most arrogant person I’ve seen on CZcams. His pupil learned nothing. He could have easily sat down and watched a CZcams video and had the same lesson
