Deer hunt in A31 [Archery, November 2022, Angeles National Forest]

- A31 is a draw tag, archery only, buck or doe during the rut in Southern California.
This was the most difficult and dangerous hike I've ever attempted and therefore the most difficult hunt. It's during the rut so you would think it's easy and the deer are just running around not minding you. Well, not so!!
I went from upbeat and optimistic, very hopeful and positive to overwhelmed, discouraged and defeated. It was still a learning experience though.

I'm not a hunter by any means (at least not yet) but enjoy watching hunting videos, glad I ran into your video and see the reality of what it is, not always "successful" but I get it, being there by itself is a success.
I had mixed feelings on posting another video of an unsuccessful hunt, but a lot of people gave me feedback and said what you're saying, that's it's nice to see how it usually works out. A lot of the zones have 5-10% success rates which means 90- 95% of the people go through what I'm going through and they might even get discouraged about seeing videos only with trophy bucks or at least harvests of any size.
And yes success can be measured differently, we all know it's not always the kill, but you know what I meant.
Best of luck hunting hon ❤that you took your dog along with you, thanks for sharing this with us, it was awesome seeing you on here again
Thank you so much!! The doggie had to come, I couldn't leave him at home but it was also great to keep me company. I was all by myself for 4+ days, no cell phone service, at least I had a living creature there lol
@@Huntress308 darn if I was closer I’d hunt with you and don’t blame you for taken your dog at all ❤️
Glad to see you back on here. My deer season wasn't that great this year. Had some health issues this year maybe next year will be better hope all is well with you have a good day .
Hi! I hope you feel better soon!!
Thank you
Its June 2023 I just ran across your video hope your still hunting hunting deer in ca is tough mainly because of terrain keep on going you will have your day and then it will be all worth it best of luck
Thank you so much!!
I'll be archery hunting in the A zone in July - this has become my favorite place. There are more deer here than I've ever seen.
But first I'm going to Utah (actually today, Sunday I'm leaving), to hike and camp for 3 weeks
Very nice video!! sorry you didn't see anything but I don't think your friend gave you a good spot. there are a hole lot of better places that you could've hunted I wish I would have seen you out their just so I could have stopped by for a cup of coffee.I Also hunt A31 I've got 1 doe and missed 2 so there out their. Maybe I`ll see you out in A31 ares some day I know a good ares is always hard to find and when you do find one you don't want to share it. But you seem like a someone who is a responsible person a little crazy for going out by herself.. but we do what we do. Again I loved your video GOOD LUCK NEXT TIME.
Thank you!
I'm not sure if I go back to A31, I mean I would, if I knew an area to hunt that was not so crazy steep lol.
I think my friend gave me a good spot, he's a very successful hunter, I think he mainly archery hunts now and always tags out.
It was just too steep for me and I really didn't want to chance getting hurt.
As far as going out there by myself ... well I hunt by myself most of the time, if I was waiting for others to join me, I'd never get to hunt, camp, fish or hike.
I actually learned to really enjoy it but it's also a treat if I get to hunt with someone. This year and last I got to do that a lot more than the years before.
6-7 years ago I was trying so hard to find outdoor friends, I didn't know anyone and now I can get someone to go with me with a quick phone call, it's funny how things turn out and I am really blessed to be able to do that.
Thank you so much for watching!
that's exciting .. i love adventure :)
Thank you for watching !
yes i hunt a31 aswell ill will be out there this weekend by indian truck trail on soledad canyon.. best of luck.
Thank you! Good luck to you as well.
I think I'm going to go back the week before Christmas, to a different spot
When I am hunting deer or any wild game I always think positive never give up just saying never if you didn't see any animals in all the days you have already hunted don't think you won't the next day because you never can tell .
Any way may our Heavenly Father bless you with a buck this year and never give up and always think positive!!!
Thank you! I need all the blessings and luck I can get 😊
And yes, you're right, you have to stay positive. But by the time I was hunting in the A zone, I had hunted for the 5th month straight.
I hunted in July in the A zone, then august through October in D7, (archery and rifle although I hunted with archery). I hunted every weekend. Every single weekend.
So I was quite burnt out by November.
Hey neighbor, I’ll be hunting this season
Hi 👋🏼 where? (Not the exact spot just in general lol)
Will be attempting to get my little girl into bowhunting and glad I came across this channel, it lets her see women enjoying the sport as well. Thank you
Thank you for sharing ! I love it!
keep it up! The buck in my picture is from Angeles on an AO tag.
Thank you! That's a nice buck, congratulations!
@Hun.tress.308 it's an every year thing as I live less then an hour away and spend 30+ mornings and afternoons hunting those mountains. I believe it's been about 16 seasons I've been free from tag soup with my bow in those same mountains. You weren't very far off from some of my honeyholes. Keep it up when you find pockets of deer they never go far here in Kaliforistan.
Great content! Was there any coyotes!!
Thank you! No, I didn't see any
You might think about going up to the area Lesa showed you for the 2023 season D8 I generally get a deer every year up in that area also up higher around the osa meadow area I go in that way to golden trout wilderness area just a thought for the coming season
I really can't hunt in D8 because. Is it's even further from my house than before. On top of it i work an hour from my house. So before i could go home and leave Friday night and get down to D8 before it got dark. But now i get home at 4:30 pm and it would take 3-4 hours to get there - more to find a spot and then set up camp, etc. And during hunting season I can't take off of work because I'm a teacher. So I'm trying to hunt close to home but I did find a lot of good areas to hunt. Hopefully next year I get to hunt with a rifle during rifle season lol
Oops Angeles forest highway and upper big Tujunga canyon road, just in that local area and just east of the fork a few miles up, we came across a local hunter that gave us some great pin points, we'll be up there this season. Good luck
That mountain you’re on is mount Wilson I believe which is 6,000ft and a lot of the mountains to the east start getting up to over 10,000ft which is mount San Antonio so ya they’re pretty big mountains and really rugged terrain. Once my friend and I found ourselves rock climbing up loose eroded granite on mount Gleason with guns on our backs and his shoulder got dislocated like 30ft up but he was able to hang on with the other arm until I got rope out of my pack and anchored it so he could repel down
That is scary. My biggest fear is getting hurt while I'm by myself, so like I said in the video I'm always very aware about the possibilities and I'm very honest with myself about my abilities. Better safe than sorry.
@@Huntress308 Better to be brave then safe. Better than dying in bed wishing for death.
@@terryjanssen316 well, then go be brave. I'll be safe, thank you
@@Huntress308 I have a feeling if he finds himself in that scenario he would be agreeing with you much more
Overcome everything! Fear Nothing!
Kudos for taking your dog into the outdoors for added protection but you probably stacked the odds even more against you seeing deer by having a predator along on a deer hunt.
Well, that could be true, but I did have does around me pretty close before when my dog was there. So who knows? Everyone says different things. If I can , I'll leave him at home
@@Huntress308 If it didn't appear he bothered the does then by all means, take him along next time. Good to have a companion along, especially one with teeth. I enjoyed your video. We need more videos of honest hunts like the majority of us experience instead of all the high $$$$$ high success videos on you tube. If you don't wear a blaze orange jacket or vest at least carry one in your pack to display in case of an emergency, it will make it easier for friends or emergency responders to spot your location and get you help. And make sure your cell phone is fully charged each morning. Hope to see more of your hunting videos.
@@MrSnootzie yes you're right about having something orange or other right color just in case.
I always make sure I gave my cell phone charged and I have a fully charged power bank - that could keep my phone charged for many many days. One thing for sure, I'm never at risk for getting lost, I always download the map on OnX and mark my locations (truck, etc), often even record the route so I know the easiest way to get back. But if there's no cell service, there's not much can be done when something happens.
Thank you so much for watching !!
It’s much easier to rifle hunt this unit during the D11 season but I like to look off the road and if I can see terrain I can navigate I like to check it out
Yes it looked like it. But I only had the archery only tag and I wanted it becase I can hunt in November or December for a week, or just a weekend.
During rifle season I wouldn't want to come down here, I'll stay close to home (D7) I can hunt in an hour from my house
Will you be hunting A31 this year? Or any other zone near by?
No, not this year. I'm hunting D7. I do have my archery tag so I could go to the tier zones, but not A31 (as it's a draw zone)
Nice I have my AO tag..I been hunting d14 d11 and thinking about d17..I sure could use a hunting partner..let me know if you want to meet up for a hunt..I know a few good spots.
This year I already seen over 20 does and 3 forkies
@@HandyMan-jh6hd I will! Thank you!
Will you be hunting d7 for the opening day of general season
When you stopped above the creek to sit you were sitting in poison oak by the way, hope you didn’t get it too bad it’s pretty hard to identify it when it loses its leaves in the late fall but you can still get it pretty bad
Omg!! Yes! I got poison ivy!! Up until now I didn't know where I got it so thank you for telling me!
It wasn't too bad because I have them in my property and I get it rubbed on me by my dogs so somehow I developed a little immunity. So it wasn't too bad but it wasn't pleasant.
It started as thinking I had a mosquito bite on the side of my face / forehead then it kinda spread on the left side of my face and anything I touched.
But, I've had it 8 years ago the first time in my life and that was 3 weeks of mystery so this wasn't so bad.
But I can't believe I sat in it 😆
I just had some 2 weeks ago but it was super mild, didn't really spread, didn't itch much so I think my immunity is getting stronger lol.
over by Little rock reservoir toward the west I counted 14 does.. and the hike is not tobad.
I will try to check it out
@@Huntress308 hello .. any luck so far on your hunt with the a31
🔥🔥🔥💜Content!!! Don't miss out - Promo*SM !!
You have to get into better physical condition. I walk those deer trails like I am walking on a sidewalk with a full pack.
It's hard, I will go 4,000 ft up and down in on day and back.
It's all conditioning.
Well, good for you. It wasn't about not being in shape. It was about not getting hurt all alone and no one to find me
If I was thinking like you, I could be called irresponsible. I'd like to stay on this earth a little longer and e hoy my time. I have nothing to prove to anyone.
I'll play it safe and stay alive and healthy
Thanks!
@@Huntress308 Just trying to inspire you.
It took me years to get used to those mountains.
Very hard rugged terrain.
To show you what is possible.
I take personal responsibility for everything I do.
I feel safer in the mountains than walking in LA.
Animals are predictable.
I rock climb, surf, skin dive.
Life is dangerous and nobody gets out alive.
@@terryjanssen316 I understand that but I'm not talking about the animals. I'm not afraid of the animals.
But hunting and hiking alone must be taken seriously because if I get hurt, no one will know where I am, how to find me or even that they need to find me.
We hear about plenty of people going missing hiking in this area (D7) right now as we speak there is a hunter who's missing in D8. He got separated from his group and they haven't found him (hopefully they'll find him very soon), it it's been 3 days already.
So no, I won't be a daredevil just because none of us will get out of this world alive anyways. I don't want to fall off a cliff and break my spine and end up in a wheelchair or die or otherwise get hurt.
I don't need to prove to anyone what a badass chick I am and climb that mountain even if my common sense says not to.
My gut instincts and common sense kept me alive and safe so far.
@@Huntress308Understood, never hunt, climb, or skin dive alone is a good policy.
