1972 GMC Ramp Truck Hauls it's first load in 30 Years! Huge Failure!

- After updating the brakes and tuning up the 1972 GMC 1 ton in the previous video, we still needed to install a fuel tank behind the seat, install a rear brake line and fix a massive transmission leak. We still need to test out the winch and see if this thing will actually haul a vehicle yet! So let's get after it! Since this truck is a family heirloom it is NOT FOR SALE! As always, thanks for watching!

yupster ditto a thumbs up on that, He rambles but it's his show!
@@petepeterson4540 Then again; important details might seem like rambling -- until you're the one dealing with them. 😄

he rambles on instead of gettin her done but thumbs up I like it to and thanks for the sponsor
@@petepeterson4540 He gets it done too though, all sorts of those things run better than they did when they rolled into the shop the first time.
Love the GMC Mortske! Ok on trans, my days in trans shop, we saw ALOT of turbo 400 governors strip the gear. They are a nylon material and heat and age make the hard. Plus the forward and back movement under stress, IE towing, 4x4, dump trucks, etc. its a simple fix. Do a fluid reading IE sparkles, mud, burnt you’ll know that smell from 10 miles away lol. That kick down solenoid must be hooked up and working for proper line pressures, it will lead to burned clutches trying to apply with low pressure if it applies at all. Don’t count out vacuum modulator, check for vacuum signal, fluid present at intake (thru the line) newer ones are adjustable. Also when I’ve done those long runs of brake lines in trucks, I’ve taken old one off (in pieces sometimes lol) I use them as a template OUTSIDE the truck. Its way easier to flare ends and make all the appropriate bends. Also as for the end nut, OMG yes I too have done what you have several times lol. So I now use blue painters tape, I slide on nut, then tape the line to keep it on. It works great most times. Not always but its my tech tip lol. That truck would look great hauling one of your hot rods! Also if you do install a 4L80 trans will you please film the swap? Thanks again
Ive used a lot of trucks with automatic trans. And every one I eventually ended up pouring fluid in them. I can take them apart and fix them. and have done so many times. However in a using working truck. The best fix that will hold up and last is to change the truck over to a stick trans.
All that fuss and bother is sidestepped entirely with a 5-speed manual. Just sayin'.
@@thecollectoronthecorner7061 Yep. Just nowhere near as much complexity inside a manual trans, and unless you're a doof and clutch dump the thing with a 25% overload, even if it does have a problem it's probably still driveable.
Thanks so much for the info!
I was gonna suggest both things. I had a Pontiac lemans that kept getting low on transmission fluid, it was sucking through the vacuum line. I was gonna say the kick down switch might effect other things and you confirmed it! I hope it works out ok. I love those trucks.
Great video :)
Simple solution to the winch speed problem would be to use a snatch block (pulley) on the bronco end and put the cable hook somewhere around the winch. That would halve the speed and double the power.
Oh and yeah more ramp truck 🤠
Yup
Snatch block = $40 fix to a speedy winch
Keep up the commentary, that is the main reason I watch. Love the ramp truck. I have always wanted one!
Much appreciated!
I love your commentary don’t ever stop talking your knowledge and wisdom is a valuable teaching tool for us
Especially when you repeat it 3 times...beetlejuice, beetlejuice, brake line!
Talking your knowledge is a little bot of a stretch. Very enjoyable for a shade tree worker though.
Thanks for the feedback!
If you use a snatch block when pulling it doubles you pull power but cuts the speed in half. Simple way to slow it down.
Keep up the good work! Love your vids.
Personally I would jump at the chance to say “snatch block” whenever the truck got used.
I didn't read your contribution, before I added mine, snatch block is the way to go.
Yep, you saved me the trouble of explaining this. I rank gear and pulley ratios in the top 5 of man's greatest inventions.
I think he's going to have a hundred comments talking about snatch blocks. I just mentioned it without looking at the rest of these comments.
I've heard of a snatch , means to grab , right? Idk
A) Put an 4L80 in it. Takes care of brute strength and OD. Also lowers your first gear, so take off is far easier and safer.
B) Yank the junk gears and put a set of 3.73:1 Gears in it. You'll have plenty of pulling power and not be stopping at every fuel station.
C) Extend the ramps toward the cab only lower the angle to put more weight on the front axle. You will appreciate this when at high speed on the freeway!!
D) GOOD or BETTER LED tail lights.
E) bright work lights aiming toward ramps and under what you want to haul. Makes night hauling a breeze!!
F) AT LEAST chain locks for the ramps. To keep them from falling out or being stolen.
G) HEAVY DUTY "D" rings on the back end of the ramps for tie down..
H) You might consider cutting off the inner angle of the ramp beds and adding 2"x3" angle to the inside so you can pick up most of todays cars and baby SUVs.
I) Replace all your cooling system and belts before heading out for more than around the block.
J) I nearly forgot, A LARGE tranny cooler will help keep you out of transmission hell.. The in-radiator types SUCK unless you live in the cold North... lol..... (I used to)!
This is all far better to have than not and you break down somewhere, especially in the dark. Bring Duff for protection!! ;)
That's a long list!

TH400 have electric kick downs
Hello, many years ago I had a 1 ton flatbed Chevy with a 454 and 400 turbo that would not shift. Mechanic replaced the governor spool valve and the problem was fixed. Watching this reminded me of that issue.
We'll check into it.
Son of a biscuit..! That ‘72 GMC would sure look awesome on the Interstate hauling that ‘66 Bronco to our ranch in California. Cheers Tom🍾🍻
Governor on a 400 first thing to check. Put a push bumper on the front to counter balance the load on the back to make it drive better. Can use hang on tractor weights to experiment for what’s needed.

Another amazing installment from Mortske and Duff. Restoring any vehicle is like a money pit. Where do you stop sinking cash into it? Usually depends on how long it will last, and how attached you are to it. Loving the Duff cam. Already looking forward to next week's video!! Keep them coming, and thanks as always!!

You're like the shop teacher I never had. Thanks for all of the knowledge I've gained from watching you work on old junk. Audio is fine with the mic but it was just as good without it so there's no need to wear the cone of shame either
Thanks for the kind words!
Manual would surely cause less issues. Our pleasure!
It would require modifying the angle of the winch, but I believe you could extend the ramps forward quite a bit which would help your weight and balance.
Duff and a bit of Petty, gotta dig it. Tight fit on the rig, ya ain't going to get many of the new age ricers on that unit, heh. Save the iron kids and melt the plastic. Be safe out there and make sure you do not misuse the "locking grips" Not that it matters, but VGG has made the big time and only uploads when he feels like it. You can always count on Mortske Repair to show us the workings of a real shop. Ty Duff and Mortske.
I personally enjoy your commentary. Please don't stop. Regarding the spring stuff on the brake lines, the Google box says you were correct. It is to protect it in vulnerable areas.
Thanks for the feedback!
That warn winch is a very sought after by off roaders. I had one on my jeep TJ and people were always trying to buy or trade for it. It is a little quick . I believe that harbor freight has a wireless remote that will work. I emailed a pdf on the winch. Shift prob may be your governor gear is apple cored I ve had that happen a time or 2.
Really enjoy watching your videos they’re awesome
Glad you like them!
Mortske, C'mon, now. don't hate on the NiCop line. It is the most practical solution to replacing old steel lines. Big boy pants, Big Daddy. Love the content.
Mortske ,you got the gift of gab . It's not a bad thing ! I enjoy it as much as the other 99.99 percent of your viewers . I had a 69 chev short box, the gas tank had a leak half way up . So I just filled half way 😅
Brilliant!
Love the content as always. As far as I know, the Eaton rears only came with 4.10, 4.56 and 5.14. I think there was a myth about a 3.90 gear set, but I have never seen one or know of anyone who has either.
Yep, 4.10 is as tall as those get. You either run an overdrive, do a 14-bolt swap, or make your peace with driving 50 mph.
Thanks for the info!
Funny, when door opens Duff comes a running
Never fails!

If I were you I would keep that truck after you get it fixed up I think it would contribute to your menagerie of vehicles 😁
No doubt
Harbor freight has a wireless winch controller for $40. Not sure if the plug is the same. You could use a snatch block to double your pulling power and cut speed in half. It's always a very good idea to secure your ramps.
Any idea if that wireless controller is instant on and off? My winch has a wireless controller but it's on a relay and runs 2 second bursts minimum!! 😬 I agree with your feedback! 👌🏻 I was thinking the same thing about the snatch block

I appreciate that you show your mistakes. It makes us feel better about it.
Glad to be of assistance!
43:55 5-speed manual swap sounds about right to me. Lose the 30% loss inthe converter you've got now AND get an overdrive gear or two to boot. And be able to bump start it if that starter ever goes out...
If only it were that easy!
The "easy" thing to do would be one of those Doug Nash/US Gear overdrives that bolts on in place of the TH400 tail housing. The hard part is finding one and hoping nothing is broken on it.
Thomas, I think your narration is the best. I'm 62 years old and find your humor the best. Kinda dry. Please don't change. That is what makes you who you are. If people bitch about it, tell them to watch half ass customs. Lol
Glad you enjoy it Robert! Will do!
Personally, the ramp truck is my favorite in your fleet, and I wanna see her get all the attentions! Great video as always, and I hope to see more on the old girl.
Good video! This project's coming together nicely. I'd stick with the TH400. OD transmissions work fine but, when swap cost is factored in against wear + fuel, the upgrade is rarely justifiable. But I'm preachin' to the choir.
Eh, swapping a 5-speed manual in there will pay for itself within the first 500 miles from recouping the 30% or so fuel lost to torque converter slip and general automatic trans inefficiencies. First thing I'd do with this truck if it was mine would be to stick swap it.
It’ll NEVER get good fuel mileage! That why she was parked!
We'll see if we can fix this TH400 first before digging into the OD swap topic too much
@@MortskeRepair To be fair, you brought it up during the video so...

Nice truck! I would swap in a 700r4/4L80 for overdrive, you should be able to find one the same length and I believe the drive shaft yolk is interchangeable between them, plus it would be cheaper than a overdrive. Also throw a set of airbags in her for overload or fill the front bumper with weight.

For your soft copper or steel brake lines... put the end on the concrete and put your foot on the end and then, roll it out straight... that's the best way to straighten soft lines... I'll make a video on it soon, since I'm currently working on brake lines on ol Hank
For a couple decades we used a 66 ford F600. 40,000 pound PTO winch We still have it. We could haul one on the back and another on a tow sling. Insurance and License cost got more than we wanted to pay. We now use a tilt top trailer with a 20 ft deck and a electric winch. With a snatch block it can load even a vehicle without any wheels easy. and we can pull it with any truck. no extra license and insurance cost.
Love the ramp truck!, I have a '72 c30 so I'll admit I'm biased on the ol' one ton. That Warn 8274 is my favorite winch, and with the metal controller cover you can tell it's a 1970's model. Great winch!
