2012 Volvo XC90 Won't start but the electronics work, battery is good, key fob seems to work.

  • Key will turn to start position, but there is no click and the starter won't turn over. The battery is fully charged. The dealership "tested" the starter and alternator. Key fob causes car not to start, but will lock and unlock the car.

    You are ahmazing!!! We took our car to 3 different Volvo mechanics. No one could figure out what was going on. ☹️. I have a 2010XC90 and it was doing the same exact thing yours was doing. All lights coming on but no cranking. I looked it up on YT and your video popped up. You saved me so much money. Car has not started in one month, as soon as I tried the other key fob, it started immediately. I almost cried. Thank you for sharing!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    Another satisfied user. I have a 2011 XC90 and had this issue about a year ago, but it somehow corrected itself. This time it left us stranded after a walk. I was all set to call a tow truck when I looked up how to jump start an XC90 when your video popped up. I used the service key and it started right up. Once I started it once with the service key the fob now works again. Thank you!

      Daneicia Freeman so I ended up having over two grand of electronics repairs which included a new remote and reprogramming the existing one. The problem addressed in this video fixed my problem then. My abs light came on and led to the $2k electrical repairs. Nothing about this is cheap, however I have had no other issues since then.

    There is an RFID chip embedded in the head of the key switchblade. Sounds like yours broke, possibly from shock like dropping the key fob. They are a bit fragile, which is why they embed them completely in epoxy, but that also makes them pretty waterproof, whereas the remote transmitter for the door locks isn't even really water resistant.
    The "software license" to enable programming the vehicle immobilizer is a ridiculous cost. With VWs, Audi's and BMWs, they have nearly the exact same process, connecting the car directly to the manufacturer network over the internet and bypassing the dealership, but they only charge their normal labor rate, not some fictitious "software license" charge.

    CZcams is amazing. Great how to vids. Both FOBs wud not start car so we used the Valet key to start car for about 3 months no problems. Volvo shops and locksmiths say this communication problem is common with RF chips. A youtube video mentioned the option to simply TURN OFF the immobilizer. Yes. Start car with only the cut keys! Forget the RF security system. I plan to put in a used ANTENNAE on the ignition key, simple procedure. If does work I will look for any mechanic with a computer to turn off immobilizer. Aint paying $400 for my 2005 S60. I will add a steering lock or kill switch much cheaper. :) Ha

      I bought the xc90 from someone with the issue. It's the 2007 model. Ive switched car batteries and fob, mostly because they needed replacement and I think the lack of voltage on those old batteries caused the issue. But after replacing I still have the issue. I only have one key and I've arranged for 2 more refurb keys which contains the chip and transponder. So I'm hoping that once I have it, I'll do the programming and key cutting and this should solve it. BTW, did getting your key reprogrammed solve your issue?

It broke into two pieces. That fixed, now the engine turns over, but will not start. It's possible the transmitter in the key was damaged?

    I had this same issue and found that it was also heat related. Car would not start a few times when we went to the beach but eventually did start when the temp cooled. After much head scratching and money wasted on new antenna ring and CEM re-furb i have found that the issue is actually linked to the keys getting hot. I did an experiment where i let the key sit in the sun for 10 mins - car wouldn't start, bring the key indoors for 10 mins - car starts. I did this 10 times and every time it was the same. Weird!
    The keys are only two years old as they were replaced by VOLVO for the same problem when i first got the car. Looks like i'll be going back.

I bought an emergency jumper just so I can run an errand. I did replace the battery not long ago in the FOB. I am now wondering if i should have had the FOB reset? any help with this guys? These posts are very helpful.

    • @simonfd4616
      @simonfd4616 Před 3 lety +1

      @@mcrawford9011 Hi. If you could jump start the car then it might not be related to the key as mine would not start at all while the key was hot. Also the battery in the Fob is only for unlocking/locking the car. The transponder which controls the immobiliser is in the little bit at the top of the key fob with the key blade in it. It doesn't require any power as it gets energised from the Antenna ring around the ignition barrel. it's that part which i think has failed in my case and i 'm having it replaced by Volvo soon. Hope this helps.

    This is going to sound weird,, I have a 2012 Volvo XC90 and the Start Prevented Try Again all of a sudden pop up one day.. It was a very hot day so I put my key in the freezer for 5 minutes and took it out and put it in the ignition and it started right up.. It is not the solution to the problem but it did save me a tow bill to the Volvo dealership,, and it was the chip in the key that was the problem.. Key fob works fine so all had to replace was the key itself. So I got the key ordered and comes to find out it took almost a month to get it into the dealership just to have the new key programmed!! Also Volvo makes you pay for the key and program up front so if you rely on your car to get you back and fourth to work you might as well have another vehicle because the dealership will almost always take at least a month to get you in and they do that because if they find something else wrong with the vehicle they will tell you that you need something else and you will have to pay for that upfront before they will start on your car again.. So in my case it took a total of 40 days.

      Wow! Sorry you had that experience with the dealership. We worked with Volvo dealerships in the Netherlands, Germany, and then Augusta, GA and had really good experiences with both of them. I'm actually dealing with it now. I've had all the mechanical components checked, ignition, starter, engine cranks when you jump the starter via the fuse box but it just won't start or crank with the key. It might crank at times but doesn't want to start. I have the same error msg in the dashboard as well. So the locksmith checked the transponder and said it's working fine but it now seems it's a programming issue and they're checking the CEM, I think that's what it's called.
