With all the shaving methods possible these days, like the innovative electric shaver that gives you quick shave, or the straight razor that can make you feel like a craftsman, the tried-and-true method of shaving with a double-edged safety razor is still “a cut above,” and today’ we’ll discuss some techniques for you to master the supreme shave.
So how do you shave with a double-edged safety razor?
    0:00 Safety Razor Intro
    00:30 Have a pre-shave routine
    01:03 Apply shaving cream
01:45 Begin shaving, with the grain
04:38 Rinse the Blade After Using Each Side
06:42 Make A Second Pass, Across the Grain
07:02 Make An Optional Third Pass, Against the Grain
07:40 Close the Pores with Cold Water
07:58 Soothe the Skin with A Post-Shave Product
How Can You Achieve A DE Shave Result Faster?
The result of a DE shave is superior to any cartridge razor shave and on par with systems like Supply or OneBlade. Some may argue it's not quite as good as shaving with a straight razor, but that also takes a lot longer and it's even more technique. In my mind, a straight razor is not something I would use on an everyday basis simply because it takes too long. It's more something you'd use on the weekends when you want to enjoy the shaving process.
The big question here is, how can you achieve that same result of a DE shave just a lot faster? Let me share with you my shaving routine, which is geared towards the best result in the shortest amount of time.
    09:09 Step 1: Pre-Shave Routine
09:22 Step 2: Apply Shaving Cream
09:31 Step 3: Make The First Pass with An Electric Shaver
10:03 Step 4: Make A Pass Against the Grain with A Razor
    10:15 Step 5: Post-Shave Routine
    11:02 Outfit Rundown
What's your current shaving method? Do you use a DE razor? Share with us in the comments!

The main 3 things to know for folks coming from hinged cartridge razors: 1) Do not apply extra pressure. 2) The first few times will not meet your expectations, but stick with it and sooner than you know, you’ll dial in your prep and technique. 3) Not all DE blades are created equal, and different blade + razor + cream/soap combos can generate wildly different results-experiment early and often.

Great video. I have been using DE razors for over 10 years now. Another tip, especially if you live in a hard water area, is to ensure you keep the razor clean by every so often placing the razor parts in boiled water and one part white vinegar in a bowl for at least 1 hour, then using toothpaste and toothbrush give it a good scrub and let it dry. It will leave the razor polished and gleaming and will last years.

A found a small niche Oldschool Turkish barber shop in the city i live in. I decided I wanted to try shaving old-school as my grandpa did, so decided to get a haircut and a shave.
Man, that straight razor shave from a pro is unlike anything.
Now I do it around 4 times a year and on special occasions.
He eventually convinced me in getting a DE-shave and even gave me a discount price since I've been a regular customer.
I have not regretted it since. He even learned me a technique on keeping the blades sharp if you don't have a buffing belt, by using the skin of your arm. I have been shaving with DE razor for 3 years, And I have still not gone through my first package of blades! Then again my facial hair grows quite slowly. Solid advice. In regards to the straight razor I actually shaved with one every Saturday morning for over a year and a DE blade during the week. Now several years later I only use the straight razor. In regards to the time it takes, I look at the shave as a ritual. Takes me about 20 minutes to do a great two pass shave. If I don’t make time for a two pass shave, A one shave pass takes just over ten minutes. I have used several brands of electric razors in the past and none of them provided a comfortable shave, however I never had one that you could use wet. I have a very coarse beard, and have found that straight razors provide the most comfortable shave, but they do not shave any closer than cartridge or DE razor.

I was as most i think in the cartridge boat, because i did not know any better. Bu my god, was a DE razer the best investment i ever made. After getting my technique down, i hade never in my life hade a close a shave as with a DE razer, and my face stays clean for up to 3 days. Also the process now of shaving because of the tools involved, the pre shave balm, lathering up your face, shaving, aftershave, has become a peacefull ritual for myself in the morning, i look forward now to shaving. Thats something i never thought possible. + points, my wife absolutly loves it

Prior to using a safety razor for your long term use of shaving, it is both wise and prudent to try the various brands of open razor blades. By trying out the various brands you will find a suitable solution for your type of skin and facial hair growth.
    Three stages of shaving:
One. The pre shave; that is the preparation prior to shaving.
    Two. The shave.
Three. The post shave; that is the aftercare of the shave.
The hot towel, hot water is to excite the hair into standing out from the face thus making the hair ready to cut.
The brush is used in a circular pattern and just like the hot towel or water, the brush movement helps to mix the soap and lather into the hair, the follicle and onto the skin layers.
Three cuts or passes in the the three main directions, no more and no less (a fourth pass may be required if a heavy growth or thicker stubble is seen).
Danger areas; lips, under the nose and the Adams apple.
Some men require to shave twice per day. If that is the case, shave in morning and at night.
    UK Army method.

I started using a safety razor for my face some 5-6 years ago. Back then it took me almost an hour as I went through some 6+ passes going in all sorts of directions and wouldn't stop until it was perfectly smooth. But that technique irritated my skin a lot, because I have very thick, coarse hairs plus very sensitive skin. These days I typically only do one pass (across the grain) and it only takes me 5 minutes. I don't feel I need to go with the grain first if the last time I shaved was the day before. And I can't go against the grain at all without causing some serious issues.
It honestly took me a long time to learn how to use a safety razor, but now that I know pretty well how to use it confidently I'm much less likely to cause nicks and razor burns than I used to with cartridge razor. I'm also loving how cheap safety razor blades are and that they come in big packs.
I didn't know about the angled technique though and I think I wanna try that. At this point I'm definitely confident enough with my safety razor that I can elaborate on my technique.

My facial hair growth always required me to shave every morning and noon in order to maintain the clean-shaven appearance. Electric razors have never worked. Disposable razors always had to be replaced with a brand new cartridge before starting each shave. For the last decade, I've resolved to using electric clippers, as well as the permanent 5 o'clock shadow that comes with using clippers instead of a shaver. This video has me interested in trying a double-edge razor.

I use a double sided safety razor and it's so much better than the modern ones that like 4-5 blades. I have a beard so razors last a long time because I only shape up the lines. Something I do that helps is I tighten the blade all the way and then loosen it up just a bit which is perfect for what I do. When I shave a lot of hair something I do is use both sides and then open it and rinse off the blade. It takes a second and ready for use which is the fastest I ever been able to clean a razor.

Hi Raphael...i use a DE razor since 3 years. After having practice i reduce the steps more and more. Now i make my face wet and lather up the shavingcreme with a good brush direct on the face. When the lather is good (1-2min) i start shaving. I use only 2 passes, down and across (only neck up), thats enough for me. Finally a good aftershave...done. I have noticed that my skin also gets routine in greasing itself, when i stop balm it. The face needs a little time to get used to, but the skin is now way better a stronger. Cheaper? Mmmh....there are so many delicious soaps to discover...i have 20 or something, for every mood in rotation. :-D
