  • Short edit of our 3 day trip to the uninhabited Portsmouth Island, North Carolina. Portsmouth Island is located south of Ocracoke and is only accessible by ferry. Our trip was a memorable one due to Hurricane Jose being only a couple hundred miles off shore.
Our initial plan was to camp on the beach but our plans quickly changed due to the beach flooding at each high tide. (September 2017)

I was there in September of 2017 and the hurricane was just starting to raise the tide, Thursday and Friday were beautiful, perfect weather, but our beach camp got washed out on the morning of 9/23/17, so we left a day early. Tried to go in May of 18, but the rain washed our trip out, and tried again in October 2018 but Hurricane Florence knocked the water well out on the Island, so with the prospect of no public toilet or showers, we cancelled. Looking forward to 2019!!!

The cabins in the video.....are they actually on Portsmouth Island or are they on a neighboring island?

Hey Brian. Those cabins are on Portsmith Island and located near the ferry ramp

That's amazing. I've watched several of your videos and thought how cool y'all are I almost bought a FJ from watching y'all videos but I purchased a Tacoma instead. And what's really amazing is that the day y'all was coming off the island we was headed to it. I was so close to meeting y'all. That's my brother in laws jeep on the ferry when y'all are leaving. Hope y'all have many more adventures and maybe next time we'll meet!!!

That is awesome, thanks Jonathan! Pretty cool we were able to film your brother-in-law coming in on the ferry, small world. Maybe one day we will meet on the trail. Also, you can't go wrong with a Tacoma.

I found your video interesting. Wife and I are going to Ocracoke Island in September. Not sure if I can take my Land Cruiser to Portsmouth because it only has road tires. Certainly don't want to get stuck up. Thinking instead about going on one of those ATV tours to get a feel for what its like there. Whats your advice?

Hey Carl. I am by no means an expert but I believe tire pressure plays a much greater role than tread when driving on sand. The only concern with driving on Portsmouth over Ocracoke is the lack of people on Portsmouth to pull you out if you do get stuck. Enjoy your trip!

You should be fine on your stock tires. Make sure to air down your tires to 15 or 20 psi (Make sure you also have a good compressor to air back up for the road!), use low range, keep your momentum up, and be careful where you stop. Take a shovel and some rated tow straps just in case and watch some CZcams videos of sand recovery just to get a feel for what could happen. You should be fine. Also, you can drive on Ocracoke's beach and if you get stuck you probably will have an easier time with getting some free and friendly assistance. For what it's worth, the ATV tour of Portsmouth is really great, though!
