Cape Lookout National Seashore | Beach Camping

Our trip took place only two days after the National Park Service re-opened access to the island after Hurricane Dorian slammed into it on September 6th. South Core Banks remained closed until September 19th while the NPS worked to make it accessible again. Portsmouth saw even worse damage and remained closed until October 8th when it was re-opened with limited access.
We used Davis Shore Ferry to get from the mainland to South Core Banks and spent 4 days, 3 nights exploring South Core Banks.

I never been to Cape Lookout but I'm just wondering why you took the ferry which cost a lot of money instead of just going the road over to the island? The reason I ask is we are planning a trip and I just want to know what the logistics are.

Hi there. The only way to get to South Core Banks is by auto ferry out of Davis or passenger ferry from Harkers Island or Beaufort.

Is that the only ferry across? I've never been to cape lookout but I've been to Fort fisher and I felt safe on that ferry
