They may look similar but the cosby show was always taped in NYC and home improvement was in los angeles, id be hard pressed to think it is a re-used set based on where both shows are taped.

There are plaques on the sound stages at the Paramount lot that display which shows were in what sets, there is one that was used for the Bridge of the Enterprise in the 60's then used for the Bridge on TNG, then Voyager, then Enterprise. I think they may have used it for sets on the movies as well.
In the movie Star Trek Generations they destroy the bridge so it could be reworked for Voyager.
For the last shots on Voyager Kate Mulgrew (Capt. Janeway) was sitting in her chair on the bridge as the set crew were pulling it apart out of frame, and unbolted the chair when they called "That's a wrap."

Wonder if all the decor shown in this video was purchased at bargain basement prices? 😂
Seriously though, gotta give props to the set designers for making both basements look absolutely different although they were in reality both the same! The magic of television!
Thanks for another great video! Again, I learned something I never knew before! 😁

No he isn’t. He is just showing how sets are reused. You don’t have to apply the shows and how they were different to it. Nor does the fact that Bill Cosby chose to be a creepy predator mean the whole show is bad. That was a good show and it had a lot more good in it than most shows today. Today’s shows are trying to normalize what Bill Cosby did in real life. That’s disgusting.

The sets do look a lot alike, and they do have the same production company (Carsey-Werner), and they may have the same design, but I'm pretty sure they aren't the same set, for a big reason: THE COSBY SHOW was taped in NYC (where Cosby lived at the time), not Hollywood, while HOME IMPROVEMENT was taped in CA. It wouldn't be practical to ship the set cross-country to be reused. The shows did overlap 1 season (1991-92), but the HI set was built after Cosby's.

Never really watched HI but do remember the basement very well from CS it was used often. Another obvious reuse of set part in various shows decades apart is the little staircase used in Laverne & Shirley when they moved to L.A, it was also in 2 1/2 Men and Mom and probably other shows as well. I never watched much of any of those shows but the staircase is very noticeable even with the rest of the set being completely different

I think it's season 6 of Perry Mason they kept redressing a grand stairway for different episodes. They'd change the banister. Or the look of the wall. Add a carpet runner. Or put a doorway under the stairs. I want to say they used it in 10 episodes. But I'm not sure. If you ever want an excellent example of redressing you definitely need to show those.

I did notice that The Odd Couple living room and the Laverne and Shirley living room are the same living room, just decorated differently. I like The Odd Couple living room better. It's more sophisticated. The Laverne and Shirley living room is kind of sloppy. It's amazing how different decor can completely change a room.

Those basement sets in no way match the upstairs of either house. Especially the Cosby house. Other than the absurd height of home improvement basement i guess it works better. These look to be about 12' high. Love the pipe. That doesn't meet code. 7' minimum allowance above staircases for awhile now. (Before that house would have been built.)
