I wish Rod Serling were here right now writing about the world/country we are presently in. If it scared me in the sixties, it would mentally pummel me now...Mr. Serling was a prophet of "the shape of things to come"!
The story would certainly be a tragedy the way things are going
Mr. Sterling's kindness and fairness make me love and admire him even more. 😍
Lol, talk to text misspelled Serling. Can't have that...
$5000 dollars back in the days was a lot of money. Much love to Serling, always.
It was a ton
Equivalent to at least $30,000 today.
@@anonymike8280actually on the screen it showed 500.00 in 1960 and below it 5300 in today's money
Note that Rick shows in the video that Serling paid the woman $500, which would be equivalent to $5000 today. $500 still was a lot of money in 1960. It may have been the standard Writers Guild of America rate for a story idea in 1960. Still good of Serling. I wish that Rick would have made the actual amount more clear in this video instead of text briefly shown at 3:18.
@@anonymike8280 According to the online U.S. inflation calculator:
$5,000 in 1960 is the equivalent to $53,000 in 2024
Wow that's something! I have been following his daughter Anne Serling on Facebook and through her posts I've gotten to know a little bit about what a wonderful man her dad was. 😍
She favors her dad a lot.
She's an amazing woman.
I didn’t even know he had a daughter
@@silvereagle2061❤cool
What a class act he was.
I love this episode. The ending is the best! Love the fact it was also the basis of The Planet of the Apes. Thanks for the information.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Since I had to read the book for a class in high school, I know that Planet of the Apes was based on a book by a French author. Of course, the specifics of the adaptation into a movie could have had many inspirations.
He was way ahead of his time. There was always a lesson to be learned from each episode.
It’s amazing how her conversation with Rod Sterling lead to a Twilight Zone episode being made. Thank you for the video Rick, keep up the great work. Please have a great day and take care!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Rod *SERLING
I'm very particular about what I watch and the old twilight zones are masterful they are written so well whether it's rod Sterling or whoever is a fantastic show and I would like to thank you for filling us in on this extremely interesting tidbit period this is the kind of program that will get you lots of viewing
Nobody could predict they would land back on Earth!
Wow! I had never heard that before. So interesting! It’s been a long time since I’ve watched that episode, I’m going to watch it later on today. I absolutely love The Twilight Zone, and I really love that you cover all aspects of it, including your thoughts and insights. It’s such a cool show to examine.
Go watch it and see how you like it since it’s been a while
@@ricknineg Great twist at the end, and a good lesson. Rod was smart in buying the story.
The title is pretty much a spoiler alert if you know the source from which it comes:
*_“I shot an arrow into the air, it fell to earth, I knew not where,”_*
It is from the 1845 poem, “The Arrow and the Song” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
I never knew this! So cool!
I didn't know that was from a "real" poem. I thought it was a silly rhyme like I never saw a purple cow
That’s very cool, I’ve never heard this anecdote before. Stuff like this is why I enjoy your videos. Anyone who hasn’t seen this episode should check it out, it’s a good one.
I loved this episode! Rod Serling was a decent and kind man.
I stayed at Nelson’s Motel once. Greatest continental breakfast ever! 😂
Ok, not really, but I am serious when I say this episode’s title! 😲 Just “I Shot An Arrow Into The Air”is basically the episode itself! No other title would have been more appropriate. Especially since it was derived from the original poem. No doubt Serling was a genius! Your videos are always genius in themselves Rick and this one was of no exception! Thanks for all you do.
It was a good episode, but the landing on Earth by accident never made sense to me.
True. Soon after take off they crash somewhere with Earth atmosphere and Earth gravity but never consider they may be on Earth.
Well, they weren't rocket scientists
New Story to me! Not surprised. Rod Serling was a good man. I absolutely love this episode! And, like all great art, it remains very relevant.
Mr. Serling was my neighbor growing up. We would only see him when he would walk his two huge dogs. He and the dogs were a delight to myself and my sisters. He was always friendly and kind to all of us. I always looked forward to seeing him in the neighborhood. I met dozens of stars growing up, and Mr. Serling was one of if not the most kind and gracious. I just wish he had not smoked so much. I never once saw him without a cigarette in his mouth. Serious chain smoker. A great artist and greater man. I liked you and remember you fondly.
LOVE THE TWILIGHT ZONE!!
This is a GOOD episode!!
Very interesting! I had no idea about this.
One of my favorites.
I had read about it in “the Twilight Zone Companion” back in the early 80s.
The early Twilight Zone episodes were after my bedtime, but a friend told me about it, and it stayed with me for over sixty years. I was mildly surprised to hear how Serling got the story; but my jaw dropped when I heard that it evolved into "Planet of the Apes." Wow! Thanks!
That's fascinating. I believe I saw that one back in 1960. I was a Twilight Zone enthusiast back then.
Oh wow awesome love rod sterling thanks for sharing great video Rick
One of my favorite episodes.
I had never heard this story and didn't realize it's connection to Planet of the Apes. Rod Sterling was obviously an honest man and glad you did this video. Thanks Rick!
Boy Rod is short!
But he was big on talent.
5 ft 4 in. to be exact.
Really?!
@@lazyhomebody1356: Hi lazy. Look at the contrast in 3:53. Either he is average and they're super-tall or he's short and those two are average or taller.
@@roberttelarket4934 I googled it (as I do everything, lol) and yes, he was 5'4"! One of my heroes though, and that makes no difference to me
Just to add perspective, $5,000 USD in 1960 is the same as $50,535.46 USD IN 2023 accounting for price inflation. He wrote that business on the spot, at a cocktail party, out of pocket!
Wow 2 great Revelations I never knew He was involved with Planet of the apes. Yes I have seen this many times. His generosity is admirable.
That's really cool! Keep them coming, Rick!
I heard it before, it told me what an Honorable man hewas. It is also one of my favorite episodes. My favorite episode is the Hunt, the cast the hound's instinct and a script by the late Great Earl Hamner.
"G'night, John-Boy!"
That is amazing.
I'm a Sterling Nerd, for sure, but I hadn't heard this one. Many thanks for the video!
I never knew this! That's amazing 😮 Thanks Rick 😊
Just last night I watched the episode, "People Are Alike All Over", and mentioned to my wife the irony...
Roddy McDowell was a scientist/astronaut who crash-landed on Mars and ended up in a cage being watched by the Martian humans.
In "Planet of the Apes", Charlton Heston was an astronaut who crash-landed on Earth (not realized at the time), and ended up in a cage being watched by Roddy McDowell (the scientist/ape).
My wife detests "Planet of the Apes" but loves Twilight Zone, so I say to her: SIX OF ONE HALF A DOZEN OF ANOTHER! 🤣
Love that episode!
I like the twilight zone. I whatch it every new year‼️
The ending was sort of apparent since the astronauts were able to go out without any space suits or other breathing apparatus. Also, the normal gravity and the like should have been another clue for them. That said though, they did expect to be somewhere else and were in some manner in shock from the crash.
It does make sense but it was pretty cool thinking the “asteroid” had the same/similar atmosphere to earth
Rod was a class act. Excellent episode. Never wood happen these days.
Great ❤
As always, interesting.
Five thousand dollars in 1963 is over $50,000 in today's money, so I'd say she got quite a deal for a very vague story premise.
Regarding "The Planet of the Apes", you could say that all of the stories and songs out there borrow from each other or use the same premises. "There's nothing new under the sun," and "original thought" is rare! We're all the same kind of people, so we're all going to think similarly within a narrow band.
Remember when the cast of Gilligan`s Island ended up on the island again?
Even if he didn't pay her she would immediately have gone to court.
Yeah he only 5ft 7 I think
Google says 5'4"!
Yes, several times RS "borrowed" from himself other eps and movies. How about doing a longer video on this?
Ah-hem! That's what writers call an allusion
So sad that Mr.Serling left us so soon. I wonder about the ideas he had for shows that he didn't get to do.
Cool... I did not know this... thank you
No problem!
Only Corey (Dewey Martin) turned on the other astronauts, because he was so scared to run out of water! Then was extremely sorry for what he did to them! Of course, by then, it was too late to apologize! WOW! Rod Serling, a genuine GENIUS!
Great story about a great story. Probably would be more difficult to do now simply due to the number of aircraft in our skies today.
I loved the Arrow episode. And when you think about it, kind of the entire twilight zone is precursor to Planet of the Apes. I mean the Arrow episode has three astronauts crash landed in the desert and the hydro Tower which became inspiration for Statue of Liberty later on. There's another episode where for people are frozen cryogenically in a cave. One of their Chambers breaks. And they find themselves in a dystopic future. And the pioneering use in the show of latex makeup which definitely made Apes makeup possible. And the speech is about man and how man is nothing but trouble. I mean when doctor Zaius talks at the end, that's all Twilight Zone coming out of his mouth.
Another episode even featured Roddy McDowell and people being kept in a zoo.
It's kind of like Sterling took everything that worked from The Twilight Zone everything that he learned from The Twilight Zone and he rolled it all into Planet of the Apes.
He was just an incredibly talented story teller.
Rod Serling was born on Christmas Day 1924 - a true gift to the world, via his writing and imagination.
❤
Similar story with "Planet of the Apes" (1968), also Serling connected.
Well Lord Of The Flies, cmon it’s the same story
Well its been a very long time since I saw this episode for the first time. I guess the ending was a surprise. The belief that they weren't on Earth was a stretch. But in 1960 with the space race just starting, the average person wouldn't know how long space travel has to be to land on another planet or asteroid. But today people would certainly know it couldn't be anything but earth they were on.
Not to sound cynical, but had Serling used her idea and not credited and paid her, she could have brought a lawsuit, which may have cost him and his production company a lot more in both money and reputation.
Having said that, this shows Serling was a man of integrity and generosity, which others connected with his efforts have pointed out. George Clayton Johnson, who wrote A Game of Pool, among other episodes, was a young writer just starting out, and he has said Serling would introduce him to visitors enthusiastically, praising his work and gushing about the episode they were shooting.
I think this is an example of Serling's generosity and integrity, as well as his business savvy. He knew how the world worked, but he continued to use kindness and creativity as his shield against it.
I'm a subscriber I hit the like button and this is my comment
You’re the best haha, truly 😃
👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!!
Oh, everybody...don't forget that tomorrow is Twilight Zone Day! Watch at least one episode to honor the show, the memories, and the man behind it!
Roughly $53,700 adjusted for inflation to today.
I will say one thing though. This particular Story Only could work back in the 50s. People didn't know much about space or space travel. I mean today we know that there isn't another place with a breathable atmosphere within light years. But back then people didn't know. So it was believable that there could be something just "out there". Anyway it made for a great story.
Got anything about the little men that make time ?
This episode always bothered me, because an astronaut would know that there are no asteroids with earth's gravity or thick atmospheres. They should have used Venus. They did not know then how hellish Venus is, but it would have earthlike gravity and an atmosphere. They would have needed it to land someplace that was entirely overcast, though, since Venus was known to be wrapped in clouds.
Theres no T in Rod Searling's name. Or in Capin Crunch either.
Correct. You still spelled his name incorrectly
@@ricknineg i see that auto correct gets me again
Your captions at 3:19 say 1960 - $500, 2024 - $5330. Was $500 the standard price that was paid for a story and Rod was being generous, or is that a typo? Because if that number on the screen is supposed to say $5,000, then that would be well over $50,000 in 2024.
Yes the amount was 500 then which comes out to 5k today
I don't think this plot has ALL the characters turn on each other. (This was the idea behind "The Rip Van Winkle Caper" from S2.) This was more about ONE character (Corey, which was also the name of the recent character played by Jack Warden in "The Lonely") turning on all the others and being such a rotten person that Serling provided mid-episode commentary about him, "speaking" to him in a way. I think I saw this one late night in the 1970s or 1980s. I know it was after I saw "The Lonely" because I remembered the character name.
As far as Serling paying this woman for her idea goes, that was very decent of him. Last night's MeTV rerun, "Mr. Garrity and the Graves", came from a non-fiction story written by a man named Mike Korologos, who wrote about an 1873 incident where the people of a town in Utah paid a man NOT to revive their loved ones after he was going to do that for them.
Wasn't,t author Pierre Boulle if not mistaken about the name, the creator of Planet of the Apes characters & concepts though? How did Rod Serling have to do with the production exactly? The Mark Wahlberg movie has I heard the original concept ending in that version.
Rod Sterling co-wrote the 1968 movie
I thought the amount per posting was 5000,00 you mention 500,00
It’s all explained in the video
5000 not 500like the graphic
500 then, valuation is 5k now
Rick, you need to change the title to $500, NOT $5,000. I have the Twilight Zone Companion and looked it up. It IS $500. When
I saw $5,000 I knew that was too much because of what the budget was for a Zone episode. Please correct the title and change the audio to reflect the correct amount. For reference, you can find the information on page 91 of The Twilight Zone Companion, 3rd Edition by Marc Scott Zicree which I have. Also, this information was easily attainable in Wikipedia as well stating $500. I enjoy your channel and your delivery, but this makes me a little nervous on how robust your research is.
Ethics and Genius. Rod Serling was an amazing man.
They're NOT your videos. You're stealing them.
