Dude… This video got me thinking and as a result, you may be on to something. In your previous TZ video about the couple in the cabin, (trio in the cabin if you count RIP the dog), you had a theory about that episode being connected to The Beverly Hillbillies. A preview of things to come as it were. What if this episode is another part of that “preview of things to come” with the pin being the clue instead of a cabin? Pixar was known to do that, throw little clues about their next production in a previous film. Rod Serling was a creative genius, so why wouldn’t he have conceived this idea for the Twilight Zone? Just a thought. Great video! You’re going strong! 💪
Preview of things to come! I really like that. If anything, this just shows us the capacity and genius of Serling
I always enjoy your videos Rick!
Do you collect any memorabilia from any of these shows? Probably very hard to get after all these years...
Perhaps Serling's idea in this was:
"The devil's in the details"!
😈 Lol!
I believe it was a common rendition of what the devil looked like so it would be easy for people to recognize whenever it popped up.
But it was so hard to see with it being so small. You must know how fuzzy TV were back in 1960 and the audience would have never seen it. Rod knew that. It’s almost like he wanted it to be found later on. Now that we have HD resolution, we can see it
I never really paid attention to Cadwallador's pin before! But now it makes sense because that was his identity!
Now you should exam Sebastian Cabot as the devil in another another episode for another similar pin. That would be a double shocker!
That would be mind blowing!
Ahh, but regrettably Mr. Pip has no such lapel pin in "A Nice Place to Visit." [S1.E28]
@@PaulTesta THIS IS THE OTHER PLACE!
@@PaulTesta: Mr. Pip will that include 1000 years of all new Rick Nineg videos? If yes I will sign the contract.
And Julie Newmar.
This is all done, back then, without any CGI. Where have all the good shows gone?
The Millennial and Gen-Z are obsessed with CGI, and could care less about real character acting…
The studio probably only had 1 representation of the devil at the time and made props modeled off that representation.
Cool, but I think that you're overthinking it. The devil was a recurring character in TZ. When you specialize in morality stories, that happens.
The connection all these shows would have had is the production crew at the studio. Rod Serling likely had nothing to do with set decoration, props, or costuming other than maybe a stage direction of some kind in the script. When you use the devil as a character, the art kind of defines itself. They even did it full scale in The Howling Man later on.
I am very aware of the devil being used a lot on this show. The point is the mystic seer being subtly introduced before the episode later on was ever filmed
@ricknineg Yeah, I got it. No offense intended. You asked us what we were thinking. That was all. It'd be great if you could find a good closeup of that pin to see if it's winking 😉.
Without a close up of the pin, which you’ll never find, I’d withhold judgment on whether one episode is a “foreshadowing “ of successive episodes.
Yeah, but it looks like to me the "devil" pin is sporting a mustache and white horns 😈
Cadwallader, ignoring his full head of hair, is quite similar in stature and rotundity to Nikita Khrushchev. Given that it’s 1959, there may have been purpose in this.
💯 not an accident
@SSJlindy: Very very clever association! However Khrushchev was not as bad as that SOB Stalin, Beria and more than a few others.
The doctor looks like Raymond Bailey(Milburn Drysdale from the Beverly Hillbillies).
Right you are!
That's Mr Drysdale minus the rug.
@@dr.migilitoloveless2385: Yes the rug on his head.
Shocking?? It may be interesting, but shocking🤔⁉️
Yes, Rick tends to get excited over things that really aren’t all that exciting! Ha-ha!
It really is INSANE!!! And stunning!!
Another favorite oldie. Hope some station will do a weekend binge of it.
Remember the new versions of the Twilit Zone, The ones in color? They were never as good as the old ones
If I remember correctly, at the end of a year (like 2023 was the last one) Syfy will show every single Twilight Zone episode k e right after the other!!! Great binge watching!!! And there are several cable channels that show these programs every week - sometimes in the middle of the night or very early😳
With Rod Sterling anything is possible. Of course he might have liked the pin and thought it would be a cool thing for the fortune teller machine. Definitely an interesting revelation.
Isn’t that so cool? His brain worked so beyond anything I’ve seen
Cool video Rick,
Ok, here's a guess:
The prop master was asked to create it as a little extra touch that was originally intended to be shown on camera (such as Bedecker noticing it during his meeting with Cadwallader; who knows: it may have even been created for Cadwallader to pin onto Bedecker as a welcome to the club gesture) which may have been shot and later edited out. Then when the episode Nick Of Time came around and a "mystic seer machine" was needed, the prop master decided to give it one more try and took the design of the lapel pin and used it for all of the machines in the diner.
I think you have something there. We can only see the detail on the pin thanks to the HD version. Without a closeup, the pin is an indistinct blob on an SD television.
You cute little devil -- Rick! Txs for your eagle eyes.
Ha ha. Very good.
Great catch, Rick. I love these!
Great catch there, I never noticed the detail of the pin. Nick of Time is one of my favorite episodes. Whoever designed the devil character did a really good job, it’s beyond sinister and creepy with its snaggle toothed grin. Lots to ponder in both of these great episodes.
Maybe there has to be a "League of Devils." The pins are how they recognize each other! LOL
Shhh! Don’t be telling our secrets, please.
@@RonBarracuda Okey dokey. We'll pretend it never happened.
If you search "vintage devil pin", you will see they've been making devil pins for quite some time. I would guess it was a pin they bought, and it became a TZ prop. Then when it came time for the fortune teller machine, they based the devil off of the pin. Because it does look like it's the same character.
Brilliant! Great use of obervational skills Rick. Frank and Joe Hardy would be proud!
My favorite devil episode is the one where a traveler releases an imprisoned man in a monastery.
I was young when this stuff was on TV, but I've always been a lot more observant than most people........and have been all of my life.
Most "big time" writers and producers, especially ones with their own shows, hid bits and pieces of themselves in their work.
Like Hitchcock always being in the background somewhere........Serling liked giving little hints of his humor, with, sarcasm, and irony that he found amusing.
I'm not sure what the devil face meant to him personally, but safe to say, it was one of those things where he probably thought "They'll never guess why". LOL
I just saw David Wayne in a 1973 Mannix episode ("To Quote A Dead Man") on DVD last night.
Kinda like a touch of Hitchcocks" quick clips in the background,,? Genius of Mr Serling,,
It may have been just a common picture, or drawing of the devil that was used as a model to make the pin and the Mystic seer. You may also notice that the costume of the character changes into the devil in the episode, the howling man. After the guy is freed from the so-called holding cell, as he’s walking away, and changing back to the devil, he obtains that same look. Check it out, episode is called the howling Man, and I don’t know which season or episode it was from.
It’s always cool to find out about something not clearly obvious to notice with these old shows. Thank you for the video Rick, keep up the great work and take care!
The person who designed the props on the show had one interpretation of the devil.
I'd never noticed that lapel pin before. Good catch! I don't think it's necessarily related to the devil from the later episode, but who can be sure? I love seeing all the people I know from later tv shows here, like David Wayne (The Mad Hatter, as you mentioned), Raymond Bailey (Mr. Drysdale later, wearing a toupee by then), Virginia Christine (the poor wife), who played Mrs. Olson on Folger's Coffee commercials years later, and as two insurance adjusters Joe Flynn (Capt. Binghamton of MCHALE'S NAVY) and Dick Wilson (Charmin's own Mr. Whipple & the frequently-seen drunk on BEWITCHED).
Another great show fantastic show with hidden secrets revealed that can be explained cool video
Ha! Great catch...I saw the pin of course, but I didn't really pay much attention to it. I think you're right because it sure does have a similar look. Be great if somebody could actually confirm it or not.
The Devil always comes off as a cool person. 😈
Twilight zone is so thought provoking.
Shocking devil pin!!!
That's real scrutinizing!!!
You must have microscopic glasses!!!
🔬
@@ricknineg: Do you also have an electron microscope?
Looks like Shatners real hair before he has to resort to toupees..
watch more of the episode and can see his real teeth too
Awesome find. Needless to say, never noticed that before. Nice work
What about his tie? The images kind of look like falling men.
Lucifer did fall from heaven, so pretty cool!
Julie Newmar played Miss Devlin, a female devil in the episode-Of Late I Think of Cliffordville. I have to watch it again to see if the Mystic Seer devil appears on a pin or somewhere else in this episode.
What an interesting revelation, Rick. I can’t wait to see if you find more of these devils sprinkled in other episodes
AS SOON AS I SAW YOU ZOOM IN, IT REMINDED ME OF THE OTHER EPISODE. GOOD CALL!!!
Rick you would need to research the Twilight Zone's art director. He may have made up a lot of props to be used for certain episode titles ahead of time. The pin was probably made the same time as the bobble head. Keep in mind, in that era, the producers of TV shows had a sense of humor.
I wonder if that is an easter egg in the series to watch out for. Would be interesting to see if it appears over and over again...
I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled
David Wayne was also the original Digger Barnes on Dallas. He left the show to take on the sitcom House Calls.
He also played Richard Queen, the father of Ellery Queen, Tim Hutton on the short lived Ellery Queen Show. Wish it had ran for more than one season as it was good.
The pin might represent who the wearer works for. I don't rememger seeing this episode, so context can't help me here.
Wow this is great observation. I don't think I've ever seen this episode, but I do remember the fortune teller machine and that creepy devil head!
The Devil is in the details! Sorry I couldn't resist.
😂
Always read the fine print.😈
Prop set people are amazing. They do things to sets that few people even realize are there.
Yes! A friend of mine from college put her College diploma on the wall in a Lifetime movie!
@@lazyhomebody1356 That is hilarious. Thanks for sharing. I never took my diploma out of the envelope.
I think you're reaching on this one. The classic devil look is the one we see here. Horned, pointed ears, pointy chin. The same could be said of the devil in the episode "The Howling Man". I don't think Serling planned this at all.
That's wild😮
I’ve seen this episode many times and never noticed! However, I think the pin looks more like the devil from another episode, The Howling Man.
Rod was the man!
Good stuff. I love that show.
That pin is so blurry that I can't pick out particular details beyond its shape. From what I can see, it doesn't look particularly like the bobble head from the next season.
Howling Man was also an episode with Satan as a character.
I wonder … was this a common rendering of the devil in those days ? If so then maybe they were just using common items of the time ?
🤔
@@rickninegI think TZC says the napkin devil was a gumball machine prize...
Good catch!
The theory is a bit over-thought when it gets to being impressed with Rod Serling hiding a background character. It’s just two different 50s vintage red devil characters, and it’s not so surprising that the Devil comes up repeatedly in the twilight zone. They made a slightly different aesthetic choice with the Devil in The Howling Man. The one here might be a stylistic ancestor of the Kalynn Campbell design you can buy at Walmart today and of Futurama’s robot devil (pointy chin and van dyke style) but the one on the label pin here stands out from all of the others I’ve mentioned by having its horns above the hairline.
And Cadwallader’s signature appears in the Tower of Terror ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, on an elevator inspection report.
Shocking revelation. Love learning these TV factoids.
It's a coincidence. They likely did not even have the prop for the "Mystic Seer" at this point. Anyway, nobody watching the show on TV in 1959 would have been able to zoom in and see what that pin was. Black and white TV pictures were snowy as hell back then. Somebody probably had the pin left over from Halloween and stuck it on that suit for fun.
awesome spotting Rick! Thanks!
I think he plays the devil on another episode. I almost think he wore the same pin in that episode.
🤔
Nope, his only other appearance on TZ wasn't as a devil.
Who played the devil in "Nice Place to Visit"?
@@StevenRogers-hw9dj
It's that space between light and dark which the show is all about, yeah? So many choices. What to do? Who is the devil? How can we identify him or her? Will he or she be wearing some sort of identifying pin or brooch, perhaps, or will a tragically bad haircut or perm be proof enough?
I love both episodes. I never noticed the pen before. I can see the devil. Yes, it does look like the same devil.
It’s a pin, not a pen.

I remember seeing the pin when I watched that episode (along with all the other episodes) a couple years back and wondering what it was
Looking at both images they are so much different, even though the pin is not clearly focused you can see a huge difference in the coloring, or shading might be a better word since it was black and white; the dimensional proportions, and especially no similarity that I can recognize in the eyes; the head in the Shatner scene being very unique. I personally think the whole thing was coincidental because both were focused on the satanic imagery to make visual points in the show. This was a Rod Serling trademark style.
Actually reminds me of the American flag pins politicians wear since 911. Foreshadowing what the devil wears.
I'm not sure to say suffice it to say it was a great showing I enjoyed it very much
I am always surprised when someone, the director or whoever, "throws in" tiny details like this that are barely visible. Why did they even bother? I small pitchfork pin, in this instance, just big enough to be clear would have made more sense.
Thanks!
The devil is played by Thomas gomez he played Meade in the sherlock Holmes movie "the voice of terror" from 1943 Staring Basel Rathbone he gained weight but that's him another weird thing
Because Twilight Zone is in Black and White, it's a little hard to tell. The pin looks like the Duke Blue Devils logo from the 1950's. It could also be the logo from The Underwood Company, who used a Devil for their logo. In the 1950's they just used the devil's head as the logo.
😈
Good catch but I chalk this up to Serling simply knowing how to provide the right amount of creep, I don't think he was trying to connect the two stories.
Well, the devil himself made an appearance in the episode “The Howling Man” but only slightly resembled the pin and that plastic head.
You also missed the dragons on the tie, and the Dragon is also an allusion to the devil.
*What about The Devil in 'A Nice Place To Visit'? Anything there?*
*FunFact: In that Twilight Zone episode the man in the white suit is portrayed by Sebastian Cabot.*
*In the anthology series 'Conflict' 'The Man from 1997' the man in the white suit is portrayed by Charlie Ruggles.*
No, I had never noticed the little pin before despite how many times I've seen this (and every other) episode, so thanks! It might be connected, but not necessarily. What this says to me is that Cadwallader, by wearing it as a quiet sign of what he's actually all about while neatly attired in a modern-day suit and speaking in well-mannered subtleties, is established as a clever trickster yet, as you say, does not deny his true identity. His way of operating, as we learn, is to lead his victim, who we clearly see is deserving of his fate, to cause his own misery and demise. Devil and demon images, which sometimes is only a face or head, are not uncommon in general. As we all know, they have been used for centuries in the arts and folklore in many nations.
This is a really great video Rick! Probably they had a little pin made up in the prop department. And they liked the devil 😈 image they had and used it for other things. Maybe you'll spot him in more episodes 🤔 😏 🎉
if you hadn't have said anything i really wouldn't have noticed this but i did find this interesting. waiting for your next video. God Bless and take care Rick.
The pin of the devil was a gift and all these stories are based on facts!
This is why Rod Serling was the best story teller of all time!!! I’m betting g he did this in purpose!!!
Aliens
i think Rod Serling's wife & 2 children are Still Alive it would be great if you could try to ask them !!!!!!!!!!!😌👍👍👍👍
The name Cadwallader is more than likely based on "the Red Dragon of Cadwaladr".
As to the pin, it makes sense to the story, but, it can also be just a little bit of power of suggestion when someone tells you what it looks like mixed with a little paradolia. There or other fairly clear pictures of Cadwallader and this pin that give it a totally different shape from other angles.
I would like to see pendent and fortune devil in dinner
When I art directed the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror for Disney I had an inspection certificate posted in your elevator that is signed by the inspector=-------CADWALLADER!
So cool!
Naah. Any devils face is going to look similar. What a silly idea.
I don’t know why you’re so shocked. Serling made the pin and then, a year later, he worked it into another episode as a symbol of the sinister nature of what is to come. I don’t see that as mind blowing.
The fact that the pin is so small and one couldn’t see it in any way with 60s TV resolution and the fact that it can only be seen now with HD clarity (even still blurry) tells me no one saw it until now. That’s mind blowing buddy boy 😃
I believe you are thinking too hard. The hair on the pin is black, not the one on the device. The horns on the device are black. The horns on the pin are white. You weren't around back in those days, but the Devil was a lot more ubiquitous then as an item you could see on combat aircraft from WWII, in dime stores, automotive displays, TV vacuum tube checkers at the convenience store, Underwoods Deviled Ham, etc, and so on and so on!
It’s not hair, it’s horns. Don’t you know the devil can change the color of his horns at will?
Very good point!
Oh, Rick, I love your channel but I think this is much ado about nothing. All devil heads look basically the same. If you had a character wearing a Santa pin then the following year saw a Santa figurine in an episode are they connected?
What did Freud say, "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar." ;-)
I believe the reason that the fortune telling machine had a devil's head on it to insinuate that it was one of his snares. William Shatner's character was starting to depend on it on how to run his life! Had it not been for his wife, he would've still been trapped there forever!
The Twilight Zone studio prop designer took his first prop from the earlier episode or just used part of the original prop for the Shatner episode. That's all.
the head was made to hang from the rearview mirror.
😮😮😮😮😮
The Devil appears to be Actor Tomas Gomez, who, was An Excellent Character Actor from The 1930s/1940s/Curly in Key Largo & The Ape Preacher in Beneath The Planet Of The Apes.
Sad people think they can sell their soul to the devil. In reality, we all belong to the devil by default. Only by faith in Christ can any of us be redeemed from a tragic fate.
Ok so I’ve been a super TZ fan from watching midnight reruns back in the late 60s and70s on NY tv . I’ll go even further , season 2 ep 5
“ The Howling Man “ when he turns into the devil horns and big pointy ears just like pin and Shatners toy pre “ Captain Kirk “
You could add that to your theory.
Just an Easter Egg by Rod.
WOW' great find - as many times as i've seen that episode = i never noticed that pin!
Probably the prop person simply used that feature again. Why recreate it?
Rick! I've got it!! Hear me out...
Cadwallader allows Walter Bedeker to live thousands of years into the future, and such a deal with the devil "sentences" Bedeker to take on an alter ego in a different dimension. Bedeker becomes one of Cadwallader's demon minions, taking on evil himself and lives his life as Jervis Tetch, aka The Mad Hatter, in the DC Universe!
[great video, great catch]
I love this! I say this is what happened! This theory does hold water and I love it!
They were not into Easter eggs back then. I believe that's a very common rendition of the devil Circa 1959.
Right now I'm sure if I went to a place that sold lapel pins I could probably find a devil image similar to this. My guess is that that's what they did. Bought it in a flea market or whatever.
I would suspect that if you can get a better image so that we can do a more precise comparison we'll find out that the pieces are similar but clearly not identical.
