I see nothing, I hear nothing, I know nothing! 30 days in the cooler...dismissed!

...and all privileges revoked for an additional 30 days!
Hogan's Heros was shot on film, and tv back then had a different aspect ratio from the film frame, including a mask known as the "safe area" to account for the overscanning of old CRT tech. The area of the parked cars would most likely be outside of the safe area, and not visible at all on tv's back then.
Yep. I was going to say the same thing. Resolution wasn't HD in those days either and they weren't planning on shooting these for viewing decades later. If you look, you see that they covered the closer in cars on the left with tarps to break up the silhouettes and make them look like snow or covered military vehicles.
Yep. overscan is definitely a thing, and is the cause behind many top of frame surprises when viewed today. It's also the reason why when viewing old "The Tonight Show" episodes now you can frequently see the boom mike moving back and forth above the speakers (I attended a number of those tapings by the way but that's another story). However, this HH episode case is a particularly egregious one even taking routine overscan "sloppiness" into account.
In addition TV sets had a mask that covered portions of the TV tube in order to help hold it in place. When I was doing animation in the mid-70s we had a field guide chart that showed the various "safe areas" for TV and theater formats.
This is the correct explanation! So in fact the film-makers didn’t mess up too badly. I suppose for safety they could have tarped up those cars, but who knows what pressure they were under “on-the-day”.
I think I noticed this too recently watching HH on FreeVee on Amazon. Oddly Amazon has dropped a few episodes from the lineup, no idea why some are missing. Anyway… I’m getting off topic. :-)
@@LaurenWeinstein Before it was broadcast on TV, in the 1970's the first episode (or perhaps it was the pilot film) of "Buck Rogers" was shown in theaters, where I could plainly see the boom mike moving around on the top of the frame!
That was a good episode. I loved when Burkhalter tells Hogan "Just because Klink is afraid to fly doesn't mean everyone is.
One of my favorite episodes as well. I like the last scene when Hogan reads the note from Nimrod.
Any episode with Howard Caine is a joy to watch!
Vaaaat iz dis man doing heeerre?!
I understand he was a bluegrass mandolin player, too.
"What is ziz comment doing here?!?!?!!?" LOL.
Hahaha!! I think this is the best blooper yet! Amazing catch, Rick! 👏👏👏
That was a good blooper! But what I’m most surprised at is that no one noticed the big white gloved hand giving a thumbs up to the cars in the parking lot! Maybe it was the hand of NIMROD accidentally caught on film! 😲
Great video Rick! Wonder if any of those cars were German made? 🤔
Hogan"s Heroes is one of my favorite oldies. Have seen this episode many times over the years and never noticed this. Good catch, keep up the great work!!
You also see a lot of parachute drops from C-119 cargo planes from the 50's in a lot of episodes.
The millions of times I've watched this show and I never caught that slip lol. Pretty cool.
Hogan's Heroes is one of my hubby's favorite shows. He owns all of the seasons on DVD.
Many thanks to you, Rick! 😍
Hi Rick, didn't notice, thanks for bringing it to our attention. Would also like to mention, maybe you noticed in the episode where Hogan is diffusing the real bomb, if you stop the video just as he is cutting the wire it almost looks like it says made in the USA around the pivot of the cutters? What do you think?
This is even funnier then the Germans carrying Thompsons in the first few seasons.
Revealing my ignorance here: What is a Thompson?
It is an American sub-machine gun that we sent a lot of to England at the start of WW2. The Germans absolutely would NOT have used them during the war. And yet, you see bunches of them in the first season of Hogan. It's also known as a "tommy-gun" and is the favorite movie gun for American gangsters in the 20's and 30's.@@FreyaTait
@@straightshowtunelove Ah, thank you!
Hahah it’s hilarious
It's nice to comment on here when the other party is agreeable. Sometimes when I comment on a political vid, I get some really nasty comments that just make me want to pull out what is left of my hair. So I will gladly exchange comments with you and NOT be an a$$hole about things!@@FreyaTait
Never noticed the 60s parking lot. It doesn't really surprise me, though, because this was the 1960s and numerous programs had inconsistencies.
I see nothing, nothing, nothing!
Back then reruns (and more importantly, syndication) weren't really thought of much. And of course low resolution tv's wouldn't have shown as much.
Awesome episode with SIDE SPLITTING laughter!!! Well written script with longer scenes of Hochstetter n Burkhalter together. 😊May have noticed those parked cars in its original broadcast. Kudos for mentioning it. Hilarious BLOOPER !!!
Anticipating ur next one. Peace
There was a crossover time travel thing with this show and the Batman show of the 60s. Batman and Robin are climbing the bat rope up the side of a building, and who opens the window but Col. Klink! The Bat Duo tell Klink to say hi to Col. Hogan for them. There's 20 years difference in the time period of these 2 shows, a fun insert!
😮 this is probably the best blooper yet! I was trying to make out make and year of individual cars. Great catch Rick !
Major Hochstetter: Vhat are dees cars doing here??!!
Also, the trees. It was always winter, but in SoCal it's always summer. Ask any tree.
Great stuff Rick. I love this episode. Anytime Hochstetter and Burkhalter appear together is gold.
Great episode! Never noticed the blooper. 😊
Fun fact. I was the camera man. It was my first day filming. I lied on my resume. I didn't know how to use the camera. I just pointed the camera in the general direction of the action, pressed the "on" switch. Hey, we ALL make mistakes.
Thanks a lot, Rick!!!! You just made me look incompetent. It was my first day. Give me a break.😂 ❤
Very cool. You need to share some more memories about your job way back then. The mistakes are what makes a great story. I was nine and probably watched it at my grandfather's house because he just got a new color television. We still had a black and white one at the time.
OMG! Great catch and great episode! :)
They probably figured that
1. The audience would be paying attention to the foreground, not the background.
2. The image is so dark, audiences wouldn't recognize the cars were from the "future".
Ive seen this episode millions of times and never seen that blooper. Thanks for pointing it out.
Rick... this was ANOTHER great "catch" on your part! Loved this especially!! Thanks again!!
Hogan's Heroes was a great sitcom and a World War II show but it was also a great take off on Mission Impossible!Hogan and the Stalag 13 crew are undercover agents posing as prisoners of war and report to London!Brilliant show!
It was a great episode. I never noticed the cars! Also in this episode, one of the kidnappers said he thought the wind must have blown the door off of the cell where they put Klink. The wind? Really?
The Old Wellington Cypher!
Give me a crack at that, mate.
That's phenomenal! I've seen individual cars and airplanes in the distance in jungle movies, John Wayne westerns, "Daniel Boone," and so on; but an entire parking lot full of contemporary cars? That's a hoot!
Well, TVs had different aspect ratios on back then, and so shows were filmed with that in mind, not today's standards. This wasn't visible back when the episode first aired, and was appropriately cropped out.
The difference between this and those other errors you mentioned is that these were edited out at the time, the others weren't.
@@Perseus7567 The TV and movie aspect ratios then were taller and narrower than now, pretty much as you see it in the images ricknineg posted above. Only if they were re-edited for wider screens would the parking lot be cropped out.
The Hogan's Hero's Stalag set was located on the "40 Acres" back lot in Culver City. Aerial views show lots of cars parked near the set so not surprising they would overlook something like that, especially considering they were cranking out these episodes to meet deadlines.
Yep, I just watched my DVD of that episode, and sure enough, cars from the "future" are visible, lol.
It’s always fun to notice things like this with shows that are older. Thanks for the video Rick, I hope you’re doing well. Keep up the great work and have a great weekend. Take care!
Lol funny blooper Rick good catch on this buddy
I saw the cars right away. But back in the day with smaller screens on televisions they probably wouldn't have shown up.
I have seen this blooper. There are more like it where that crew parking makes cameos. There are shots where lights and stands appear not including reflections. There shots on the stage where the camera shot off the edge of the set. Usually this was the roof lines. The crew has made cameos in the background as well. The speed in which these shows were shot and put together was incredible for the time. Usually 3 days with the fourth for pick up shots (Any episode). This is a good episode, well written.
I saw this a few years ago someone made a comment on it on a clip somewhere on youtube and I got my DVD out and saw it. Too funny. And the woman in this episode, Ann Prentiss got into a lot of trouble. This from IMDB: "Sadly, she spent the final years of her life in prison after being convicted by a California court in June 1997 of assaulting her 86-year-old father at his home and later trying to hire a convict to kill her father, her brother-in-law Richard Benjamin and her nephew Ross Benjamin. Sentenced to 19 years in prison, she served 12 years prior to her death in January 2010."
In some episode, also, there's a short scene where clearly, audibly flying overhead, a general aviation airplane with the very distinctive sound of the opposed, six cylinder engine(s) commonly found on many Beechcraft (Barons, etc) airplanes of that era. I think it's a scene where Hogan is standing just outside a baracke talking to someone. Thanks and be well, Rick.
Rick’s channel is always so wholesome and great. Better days.
3:54 is that Mr.Wipple the toilet paper guy?
Yes, that was him. Dick Wilson.
I wonder if Dick Wilson got to squeeze the Charmin.
The one and only Dick Wilson.
HH was my fave TV show, ever. Must have seen this episode ten times. Because I always watched this episode in low definition, I barely noticed the parking lot. The continuity error from HH that always sticks with me is a shot of a street with retail shops and ALL of the buildings were obviously built around 1960. Made me cringe in the 1970's and I cringed again a few years ago when I re-watched that episode.
I love this episode and just watched it again about a week ago. Great catch on this one Rick.
I love this episode ...now I'll enjoy it even more.
I haven't seen this specific episode in decades, but I sure do remember all kinds of bloopers like these in Hogan Heroes.
I love the cipher and the surprise ending about Nimrod.
This was a fantastic catch Thanks to sharing Rick
Wow! The parking lot, how funny. I absolutely love this episode. I never tire of it bc it’s just so funny. I have to watch it today. Thanks, Rick❤
We were too dumb to see this.
What's even more disturbing is, if you look closely, you'll see a 2022 Honda.
One of my favorite episodes! Thanks Rick!
There would normally been a screen of tarps and trucks to cover overshoot when the camera was at ground level.
I can't believe I've missed that, I need to go back and rewatch it. The mind really does filter out what it doesn't want.
I’m personally fixated on Bob Crain’s home movies right now but thanks for the offer.
One of the best episodes!
I do love "The Missing Klink" episode! The scene in Klink's office with just Burkhalter and Hochstetter...
I used to watch this growing up in New Zealand with my dad. We loved the show, however, I have always found it to be irritating! Thank you for pointing out the 1960s cars! Very funny 😄. All the best from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺
unfortunately too many of the channels showing the old shows have cut 5 or more minutes out of them, so we still aren't seeing this and often the parts cut are the 'best' character pieces
Awesome!!!👏
I don’t recall this I will look again , don’t know how they could goof like this
German TV Series "Soldier Schwejk". 1WW and on a train station they filmed the cast carpark with cars from the 70s. I own many old tv series and see often so funny mistakes.
That was used in another episode where they making experimental rocket feul . The gate shot
Haha! I’m going to look that up now!
This episode is one of the few in which both Maj. Hochstedder and Gen. Burkhalter appear.
Vat are dese cars doing here?!????
I saw something recently that I think was a bit of a writing blooper. A local female from the underground has been arrested by the gestapo just on a vague suspicion so Hogan captures Burkhalter's sister and sets up a trade. Well, now you have just gone and told the gestapo that she IS an underground agent for sure and valuable enough to do this for. There is no way she would be released alive even if it was a generals sister. Or if she was released, she would be closely followed and re-arrested later.
Also... What is Burkhalter's first name? In one episode his sister calls him "Hansie" but in another episode its a different first name and at some point we find out that "Hans" is also Shultz's first name.
That’s so funny! I guess they meant to crop it but forgot lol!
Wow! Never noticed that before. Thanks Rick. I liked this episode.
Good catch
That's a good one!!
Well, the Germans had some really advanced technology.
As a going on 60 year old fan of classic tv and movies and remembering back to when these shows originally aired. I remember my brother in law pointing things like this out to us and we would just laugh and continue watching anyway. My brother in law was very observant about this sort of thing and he always noticed it. even today with the new series I occasionally notice flubs and inconsistency’s.
I still really love episode.
I never knew on how they accidentally got the real cars into the shot.
Mr Whipple in a German uniform
That happened because they knew it wouldn't show up on our old analog TV screens. Judy Norton pointed this out to us on her channel. That things like microphones show up on the edges of wide screen TV screens now. Took that long for it to happen. Sort of cool though.
Major Hochstetter is actually wearing the rank of an SS Colonel at 4:12. The single oak leaf on the left collar patch. SS-Standartenfuhrer
In the pilot Hogan is asked where the outside man, Olson, goes when he changes places with an escapee. I have only seen the scene once which shows where he goes. It is not on my DVDs. Olson is shown at his girlfriend’s apartment when he receives Kinch’s radio call to come back. The tv station that now airs the show started with the full versions and has since whittled them down to add more commercials.
I'm surprised there was never a palm tree in the background.
Lol!😂 Rick !! Love these bloopers . (I just seen “Scholz “ in a show the other day where he played a bad guy) have a good one . 👍🎭. 🐊
He was in quite a few old b&w TV shows, like Perry Mason. The first time I saw him he was still slim, a favorite movie from the war where he played, what else - a nazi. Once Upon A Honeymoon w/Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers. Didn't recognize him til a couple of repeat showings - the inflection in his speech helped ID him.
This is one of the best shows! I'll look for it next time it's aired on MeTV ! That is a BIG blooper!!
I'll look for it. I have the Blu Ray version of the complete series.
Holy cow! What a great catch. The germans had 1960's era cars and still didn't win 😂
Maybe they dug a "Time Tunnel" to the west? 😁
Knowing they were in Stalag 13, most likely yes haha
No, I hadn't noticed, but have seen aerial photos of the set with the cars parked off to one side, just like in that scene.
Nimrod's escape plan was to open a worm hole to a 1960's parking lot; I wonder if he made it?
Interesting I never saw that b4
On TV, this would have been hidden by overscan of old school TV sets. I’m sure it wasn’t visible on broadcast or even VHS. There’s probably some videos about overscan on some kind of video website owned by Google.
Definitely a time slip vortex created by the foo fighter beings.
Haha
It could have something to do with the film vs the televisions of the day. Many times cinematographers of the day did not care about things around the edges because of the televisions of the day would never display it. Of course now, with high resolution wide screen TVs, people are seeing the whole picture.
I always enjoy Howard Caine as Major Hochstetter. He is hilariousI
He used to scare me when I watched it as a child.
Did you ever notice that just about every episode there is some snow on the ground. I guess that the prisoners never made it to the spring or summer.
Rick, I thought that I caught a BLOOPER on THE FLYING NUN (not sure if you're into this series with Sally Field). The ep had Bob Cummings as a Priest. While he's grabbing a bingo tile from the wheel, it slips in his hand, and he quietly says ... a 4 letter word. Anyone else here catch this? The ep was on TV today. IF this is true, I'm surprised that it wasn't bleeped out before airing.
I just watched this episode bu😢didn't see the cars! I'll have to re-watch it again and look for them!
One of H's experiments and I do not mean Hogan.
In Hogan's Hero's what was the Fake Snow made out of ?
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I saw u eat a piece of paper😂😂😂😂
The production schedule on these episodes was tight and getting tighter. The show was popular, and as a show gets popular demands for fast production always happen. So they had this scene Day for Night it was probably a quick cut, and it took 4k and frame by frame to find it. No harm no foul. The cast and crew probably had a laugh or two and plunged into the next show, most likely because the management was standing just off-set with a bullwhip. There is nothing harder on cast and crew than a weekly show. It is true today and it was true back then too.
Small screen TV w as s common back then. Possible hardly anyone noticed, except the cast. Did they use film or videotape?
Hilarious! Ty.
I can’t say I’d have caught that without you specifically highlighting it. One of things I don’t make the connection when I see it.
Interesting
A scene of what could be a monster of war called a NAZI Germany security base, to the unseen eye. But what is unsuspected through this ominous scene for a group of allie prisoner of war spys who have now entered The Twilight Zone.
Play ominous music and cue Rod Serling haha
@@ricknineg 😆😆That actually was in my head when I commented. You inspired me Rick. 😉
