    Your videos have been such valuable resources for me as I try to narrow down what I want to do. I was studying music for 5 years at a community college, but didn't do so great and had to drop out for various reasons. Now, I'm returning to college after a four-year break to major in Sociology. There are many other things I'd like to learn about, like LGBT studies, Social Policy, Human Rights, Peace and Conflict studies and so much more. I'd like to pursue a career in Macro Social Work to work in my community and become more of an advocate to empower the groups I belong to. Thanks for another awesome video, Gabby!

    I definitely got into social work based on my upbringing, and the unhappy space that I was in during my early adulthood. I graduated 6 months ago with my MSW (Macro - Community and Admin Practice) and I’m kind of lost and confused right now, as I am trying to move out of direct practice. You videos have been so helpful in helping me put things into perspective, THANK YOU! 🙏🏾

    So great film for your channel! Just started my MSW program last week and one of your videos was linked into our first lesson on Macro Social Work. Until now my understanding of social work was limited to direct care but now I recognize that I’ve had a macro desire since I was in high school. I have a passion for kids and education and have done so much research and presentations on the school to prison pipeline in Virginia. I’m starting to think that the most effecting way to combat that system is through a macro lens

    Thank you for sharing your story, Gabby! I'm a first-gen, non-traditional college student who spent much of my twenties in survival mode and feeling like I didn't have a sense of direction. Once I started seeing a therapist during the pandemic, I also re-enrolled in school with the goal of becoming a therapist, but have changed from psych to social work as well. I've never considered macro-social work, but so far my experiences up to this point would naturally fit this type of work. Thanks for having this channel as a resource!

    Wow your MSW program offered a class on social entrepreneurship!? Awesome! That is something I’m wanting to learn and feel very strongly that more social workers should enter that specific field. My program will cover social enterprise, so I’m excited to learn more.

    Happy New Gabby! Your Pachira is growing so beautifully. My love for the field was sparked in nursing, more specifically working in various nursing homes...also I love working with Older Adults.

      Hello and Happy New Year! Haha also, the pachira money tree in the shot is a new edition! I still have the smaller one, and it is thriving too. But this one is huge! I love how easy they are to care for, so I’m happy to have two now. Also, thanks for sharing your journey. I always thought there was a lot of overlap between nursing and social work.

      @@MindyourSociety oooh ok...lol yes they are not fussy at all. I will have to replant mines soon. Yes, I believe working in the nursing as various roles laid the foundation for me in alot of ways.

    I loved this video! Thank you for sharing. I have similar reasons as you for switching career fields to social work. I also began thinking about it as a career after having a very close family member diagnosed with serious mental health issues. Before starting my MSW program, I definitely sought out therapy for myself! I recommend it as well.

      @@MindyourSociety Yes, I’m still in my first year of my program but the end goal is to be a therapist for youth/adolescents. I plan to go into school social work until I have enough hours for my LCSW.

      Thanks for watching! Honestly, I’d say yes. But I don’t take back the direct practice work I have done at the start of my career, because it taught me what was necessary for me to do macro work effectively.

    If I got a scholarship that fully covers tuition at the #10 MSW in the nation (Boston U), but will need to take out 20,000ish in loans in order to pay living expenses (rent, food, etc), is it worth it?? I have no other debt at the moment. And plan to work part-time + live as modestly as possible.. I have lived in the South my whole life and this would be a big change for me but it feels like such an incredible opportunity that I can't pass up. What do you think?

    • @MindyourSociety
      @MindyourSociety  Před 2 lety +2

      Congratulations!! That’s amazing. And Boston U is a great school. You would know better than I would regarding if it’s worth it, because you best understand your finances, future career goals and what salary is associated with it. I can say that I had the same situation when I was given a full scholarship for University of Illinois for my MSW. I still had to take out ~20k for cost of living. Reflecting on it now, it was definitely worth it and I’d do it again. I think I got better social work experience in a big city. I was exposed to more types of people and communities. Wishing you the best in whatever you decide!
