  • I try a simple fix but I soon discover that there is much more to the picture and I have not considered all the mechanical systems affecting the arm. I'm surprised by what I see under the microscope but subsequent actions get no where.

At 03:15 you got it, you need to tweak this in conjunction with the "steuerpimpel" as this controls the tracking force as well as the max. hight of the lifted tonearm. You need to check this but turn it just a quarter of a turn and then next and so on...
Be careful with that, you can jam the whole thing, if you turn it too many times.....
For 05:30 and up ....no,No,NOOO....put it waaayy back if you operate the player like this the special tonearm lift oil will come off, very greasy stuff, hard to get, expensive....
07:00...that´s it....no more slow tonearm lifting anymore that grease had come out...wish you a very happy cleaning...this is very hard to get rid off...and you´ll need to clean it *completely*....
To do this right, you need to dissasemble the tonearm....
My conclusion, this would be now a good source for parts....As to make this fully working again, you need to put *lot* of work into it. And you need to take off the entire tonearm, dissasemble it, clean it, reassemble, re-mount and you have to re-check all the movement, the lifter, the automatic movement, the positions, the transit.....
Wow this is now for very experienced dual guys, even i would not do it to these rather mid end chassis. I done it for my 601 but this is a complete other range;)

I bet it was meant to be a felt type material so it would slide. That part is not meant to have friction.

Jim, great stuff, but, what does Mrs. L say about all this late-night shop time!? LOL

Joe Jach As long as I get the vacuuming done . . .

Petroleum based synthetic plastics and rubbers can be dissolved by petroleum based lubricants. Lubricating them with the wrong lubricant can result in much heartbreak. I prefer silicone based greases and oils for this kind of thing. Another advantage is that silicone grease doesn't creep the way petroleum grease does. Very costly stuff if you buy it at the electronics store. CT has the same thing for a couple of bucks. It's called 'Plumbers Grease' and is meant for use on the o-rings in taps and valves. Check it out...

Please, no lubrication of that automatical tonearm movement (that black plastic thing where the pattern is) at all. DUAL simply says this in every service manual.

      TubiCal No worries.

You can get service manuals for this from ebay. If you would of left it alone, it would of eventually loosened up and worked. Duals need friction grease to get the tonearm to move during horizontal cycle. The main lever needs a thick pasty grease for friction. I learned the hard way one time of removing it to never do it again.

Edward Morris I'll see what I can find out about this. You never know what you never know. Thanks for the info! Jim.

Very true. I had to buy a tonearm for my Dual 1229 because I broke the tabs on the tonearm trying to move it from single play to multi play. Turns out there is a rubber ring that holds 2 ball bearings that lock the different tonearm positions and that ring had hardened. So I learned a lesson also. Yours doesn't have that option.

No it indeed has this option it´s that thing on the headshell placed at the same side the headshell holder is placed, but it´s round and could be in up or in rear position and controls the high of the cardridge. It´s just another way of doing this.
Dual was very creative in these things. Take a look the very old models 1002/1003/1004 models and you´ll see what´s a real dual player/changer is....it has more in comon with a mechanical wall clock than an record changer.

You're right! I have a 1019 and a 1229. They can be a little persnickity if they haven't been used for awhile. I take a look at mine before I use it and make sure the underside looks alright. I'll cycle it and if there are no unusual sounds I keep cycling it until it either works right or I look into it. There are about 5 different types of lubricant the turntable uses. I don't like to mess lubricating them unless there is a definite problem. I always take the motor apart and lubricate it. I lubricate the idler wheel bearing, the turntable sleeve and re-grease the bottom bearing. If the main lever has friction grease, I leave it alone. Now the tonearm lift may need adjustment and cueing lift. The old ones are intricately made and made well!

Anyway, that´s why i love DUAL:
    czcams.com/video/x5BWzlxP-80/video.html
Every dual can do this, even upside down if you can sick the record onto.
DUAL had made a mechanism and presented it at a fair during the mid 70. This is now located at the "phonomuseum" st.georgen. The Dual player is rotated fully 360 while it´s playing a record....
That is all spring loaded mechanism vs. gravity operated (the usually) mechanism.

this is why I only use manual decks

+terry Card This is one of my most disappointing repairs. I've had only as few real failures and this is one of them. My own turntable is totally manual - I have to remember to lift the tone arm when the record is done.
