I run through the alignment procedure for the broadcast band with a huge improvement that results in great performance. It's certainly one of the best broadcast receivers I've had in my shop. Wonderful.
Hammarlund HQ 100A Communications Receiver Video #11 - Positive AVC Voltage?
zhlédnutí 556Před 7 hodinami
I've noticed that the AVC voltage can go positive which is an unusual thing so I look into what might cause that to happen. I then complete a precision alignment of the three IF transformers. It's a good day in my shop.

Hammarlund HQ 100A Communications Receiver Video #2 - Tubes Tested
zhlédnutí 496Před 14 dny
It makes sense to test all the tubes in this radio before doing anything more. The 6BV8 tube is of particular concern because it is rare and the 6BE6 could be a Sylvania which can behave poorly in this particular radio according to a service bulletin. Since the radio operates, it's unlikely any of the tubes are bad but the possibly must be eliminated before more work is undertaken.

46:37 seeing this wire wrapped mess of capacitors and later them flapping in the breeze with no mechanical tie points, makes one wonder why others like M.Caldeira or Robert Anderson bother with restuffing caps, relocating caps, putting in terminal strips or even going to the length of buying adapt-a-cap PCB boards... Oh wait i know why; they want to do a good job for the paying customers not just a "it will work until it is off my bench" job... I dont know what canadian law is on this, but in most civilized countries Jim, being the last one to service this radio, would be the sole one responsible for the electrical safety of this appliance. I am anxious to see what he does about the elephant in the room; the missing back cover on a hot chassis....

38:40 There is a reason Philips opted to make the first capacitor after the 35W4 tube 30uF and not 40uF or 47uF, like Jim intends to. And the reason is the inrush current and repeated peak in charge current near the top of the AC wave. It is a common misconception that this only affects the initial inrush current on a uncharged cap. As a matter of fact the choice of capacity also determines where in the raising edge of the sine wave the recharge of the filter cap sets in. A too high value cap pushes the recharge point toward the peak tip of ur sinewave, meaning that only a very short timeframe (small phase angle) remains to fill the cap up to full peak voltage. And that means a high current needs to flow to achieve that. And again, this peak current is not a one shot event, but repeats with every wave - be it half or full wave depending on ur rectifier design. So choosing the value of the first cap after a rectifier - tube or semiconductor - is walking a fine line between reducing the repetative peak charge current versus ripple reduction. You can easily watch that effect of too high of a filter cap by simulating it in Pspice/LTspice! And even if you are of a less theoretical approach, tube datasheets specify the max capacity of the first filter cap after the tube. In the case of 35W4 it is 40uF. So philips opted for a 30uF as the first cap to stay well below that limit value and thereby reduce peak charge current to ensure a longer tube life. A more knowledgeable and more dilligent tech would have opted to replace the old 30uF with a 33uF one, and at least go for 200V not 160V.

21:50 please do away with this makeshift marker generator and most importantly this SDR toy! This is not a precision calibrated instrument. More over there is no need to peak the IF to the absolute exact frequency. 453 vs 455kHz wont make a difference. Not even 450 versus 455kHz would matter in normal operation regarding selectivity and bandwith. This is useless tinkering trying to tune this boatanchor to tolerances, that it was never designed to. Peak the IF to a static 455kHz from the generator and be done. And if you feel the need to visualize the passband curve sweep after you did the static IF alignment and make sure to keep the peak at its place on the x-axis during sweep and only move the sides. This will be more precise than SDR and makeshift markers. And btw; the way the limiter set to on influences the signal shows that you operate the generator at too much power. Electronics Old and New did a good video on IF sweep adjustment. Maybe gontake a look there - oh right, you dont take advice from others.

Fixing problems with Chinese mini-whips: Perhaps the Chinese factory reversed the polarity between the power plug in the case and the bias-T board. See 7 to 9 minutes into czcams.com/video/MuenCKFC-iI/video.html Next, the bias-T board of some units has a capacitor C3 which is supposed to stop DC from reaching the receiver, however the printed circuit board designer mistakenly ran a conducting strip under C3 from one connection of the capacitor to the other so that C3 does nothing. To repair, you must unsolder C3, break the connection under C3, and resolder C3. For details, see czcams.com/video/9Jtzw2QIvw0/video.html Another problem is that the input transistor in the original PA0RDT mini-whip schematic is a J310 JFET, but some Chinese mini-whips replace this with an unknown type of bipolar transistor. See czcams.com/video/tvoOAWHiK20/video.html Therefore, if you purchase a mini-whip from China, be prepared to correct construction errors before the antenna can function as PA0RDT designed it. Lastly, regarding the multiple comments on this video by Greg-et2dp, this appears to be impossible now. At least I can no longer leave more than one comment per CZcams video. I found this out when I was trying to answer a question that someone asked me yesterday about a comment I had posted a year ago, and CZcams would not post my answer. In fact, I had made several comments/questions about that video a year ago, and they were all still there. However, when I tried to answer the recent question by editing my year-old comment to include the answer to the recent question, both my year-old comment disappeared as well as the recent question about that comment.
